Savannah
Welcome back to this week's episode of Unlocked. I am so excited because I have Maddie and Tay.
Maddie
Hi.
Savannah
Welcome, guys. Thanks. I feel like, honestly, I feel like we've known each other forever. Like, we've just been sitting here just talking because I was running a little late, but it's okay.
Maddie
Oh, girl. Absolutely.
Tay
We get the late game.
Maddie
We got kids. We get it, girl.
Savannah
I know. That is. It's also so crazy to see you guys with kids.
Maddie
It is.
Tay
It feels weird, like, to say that I have two kids. I'm like, I don't know what's happening. How did we get here?
Savannah
Listening to your music throughout all the year. Like, I listened to, like, your first album. You put out, like, all of it. I did. So, like, it's just. It's. I feel like it's how people feel seeing me because it's hard for them to imagine me not at 15.
Maddie
Oh, yeah. It's like the Disney effect is what I say, where it's like, you see someone on Disney and they blow up or whatever, and then, like, they grow up, and you're like, oh, my gosh. Wait, what? And it's like, yeah, they get to have a life. They get to be an adult. Like, you know, and it's like, it's just funny, people now. Like, even our album cover is, like, a little sexier. And we have kids, and we're like, oh, my gosh, when'd y'all grow up? We're like, we turning 30 this year. Y'all just were asleep. I don't know where y'all were, but we're old.
Savannah
Exactly. I'm like, people would be like, oh, should you really be doing X, Y, and Z? I'm like, you do realize I'm almost 30.
Maddie
Yeah.
Savannah
Like, I'm 27 years old.
Tay
When's your birthday?
Savannah
August.
Tay
August. Amazing.
Savannah
What is yours?
Tay
Mine's in September.
Maddie
July. We turned 30. Yeah.
Savannah
Right in the middle.
Maddie
Yeah. So were you. Cancer. Early.
Savannah
I'm a Leo.
Maddie
Okay. Okay.
Savannah
Yeah, like, to a T, too. Like, my friends, they're like, oh, God, yes.
Maddie
I don't know.
Tay
I don't know a ton of Leos stuff.
Maddie
I know that my son is the same as you.
Tay
Yes, Virgo.
Maddie
Yeah, Virgo. But I don't know.
Savannah
Leo is, like, fiery. Like, just out there.
Maddie
Yes.
Savannah
That's how it is. I love kind of crazy, I think. Perfect.
Maddie
I just know cancers are, like, really sensitive, and I. Oh, my gosh.
Savannah
Like, are you sensitive?
Maddie
Yeah. Like, I. I mean, not like, my feet. Like, my feelings don't get hurt easily, but it's just, like, I'm sensitive to, like, my words to people. And I don't know. Like, I'm a very spiritual, like, very big feeler. So I feel like that's pretty accurate for me, I would say.
Tay
Yeah, for sure.
Savannah
What do you have in common and what's, like, your biggest differences?
Tay
Oh, biggest differences.
Maddie
Probably our tidiness. Totally lack thereof.
Tay
Yeah. Like, Maddy is.
Maddie
Thank you so much.
Tay
Maddy is, like, type A to a T. And I am, like, so type B. Like, I walk into a room, and it's just tornado. And I like it that way. Like, I'm like, do, do, do, do, do. Mad picking up after me.
Maddie
She's like, are you finished drinking this? And I'm like, I took one sip. No, I literally, I. They, like, get onto me on the road because I'm like, if there's been a cup sitting out for longer than 20 minutes, it's going in the trash. Like, that is hilarious. Yeah. But, like, I, I. It's perfect, though. Like, we work so well together because we're so opposite. But I would say, like, similarities, like, our values and our core. Like family and, like, unconditional love and our faith. Like, those things are never. Like, the core is the same, but just, like, our personalities are pretty different.
Savannah
Yeah, I'm very. It's funny. I'm, like, a mixture between that type A and B.
Tay
Yes.
Savannah
I will be out. Like, one of my best friends and hairstylist Tyler, he travels with me, like, everywhere, and he's like, I swear to God, when you walk into a hotel room.
Tay
Yeah.
Savannah
It's like a bomb went off.
Tay
Same.
Savannah
Yeah. Like, literally, it's like you open up your bag and there's crap everywhere.
Tay
Yes.
Maddie
I'm the exact same psycho. Like, everything is, like, in a cube. And like when we go like play our show, like before I glam, I set out my makeup like a makeup artist would. And then I like have my hair stay like I'm a psycho. And then I have like my PJs laid out on the bed before I get. I don't know. For me it's like, what a nice thing to do for myself, you know, I don't know. That's my mentality.
Savannah
Like routines that make people feel.
Maddie
It's a control tactic really. I am a control freak to my core and trying to undo a little bit of that, like perfectionist, like control freakiness. But there's those little things that do. I'm like, okay, I have control of this. That's so great. Everything else is a tornado. But like the day and the show.
Savannah
Do you lay all your stuff out as well?
Tay
I do not. I'm trying to get better. But I used to like, my makeup bag used to be a plastic bag from like Walgreens or cvs. Like, and I got so much crap for it. So I was like, maybe I should buy a real makeup bag. But I'm trying, okay.
Savannah
Trying to like, hey, one step at a time.
Maddie
Yeah.
Savannah
So how would you say that yalls personalities. Has there been a time during this music journey to where you guys have like butted heads? You've, you know, you maybe didn't talk for a period of time.
Maddie
We've never non talked.
Tay
Yeah, we're always talking.
Maddie
Yeah, we talk constantly. We're not really like a butt heads kind of friendship. Like we, we are just talker throughers. Like anything that we disagree on or like, I don't know.
Tay
I hate conflict.
Maddie
I know both of us do, but like really hate. I will like mess somebody up if I have to. Like, I have like this. I'm from Texas, so I'm like real spicy. Like we're talking about fiery. So like I will like, but not with the people that I love. Like, I'm so much more gentle. But like someone hurts her and I'm killing you. Like that's just, you know what it is. Yeah, exactly. There's just no question.
Savannah
That's how my friend group is. Like.
Maddie
Yeah, yeah.
Tay
That's loyalty.
Maddie
Yeah.
Savannah
We can have our disagreements, but you step in, you're done.
Tay
Totally.
Maddie
Yeah. Yeah. But we both like, I think there's just like respect that just doesn't, you know, like, we just don't cross those, you know, lines for sure. But also we've been best friends since we were 15, so it's like, we've.
Tay
Been through a lot.
Maddie
Yeah. And so I know how she likes to be communicated to when I go.
Savannah
And how did y'all meet together?
Maddie
Yeah.
Tay
It's a good old story. Oh, you want me to tell story?
Maddie
You want me to tell you?
Tay
Yeah. I'm so bad at telling a story.
Maddie
So once I'm uptime. No. So I was going to a vocal coach in Houston, Texas, which is where I grew up. And then she was seeing this same vocal coach, but he had another location closer to Dallas. Okay. And so he turned out to be. He was the first, like, slime ball that we ran into in the music business, which was great because it prepared us for this disgusting, like, business. I mean, entertainment in general entertainment industry is gross.
Savannah
Horrible.
Maddie
It's so bad. So when you do find good people, oh, my gosh, it's such a bl. And you just, like, hang tight to those really good humans because there's some funky stuff in there.
Savannah
Yes.
Maddie
But anyways, he was, like, a total slime ball, but we met through him. He, like, introduced us, and then we eventually just, like, kind of ditched the vocal coach because he was just kind of weird, and, like, it was just getting funky. And I was already going back and forth to Nashville because I had a guy in Houston that I had met, and I really wanted to be a songwriter, and I met him through the vocal coach, and so I had gone to Nashville, like, twice, but I didn't know at the time, like, I was paying a songwriter to write a song with me. That's not what you do in this town. That's not how it works. But, like, you know, I'm 15, and I don't know.
Savannah
And so you want to get in?
Tay
Yeah.
Maddie
You're like, here's, you know, $300 that, you know. Yeah. So to write a song with me, and then I write the whole song. And so anyways, we started going here together and writing, and that's kind of when we, like, started finding our. And then we found a couple writers that, you know, we really gelled with and kind of helped us create, you know, our sound. And so we moved up when we were 17, and there's this guy, Mike Molenar, that we still work with. He's our publisher. So he, like, helps us with all of the songwriting stuff, like, all the songwriting part of the business. But he was the one who, like, initially saw the potential and was like, wow. Yeah. And he was like, if y'all move up here, I'll, you know, get y'all Paid enough to like, pay your bills and write songs for us. And if this works out, then, you know, we can just keep building. And so we, like, moved up the summer of 2013, got my high school diploma five days later, moved up to Nashville. You know the typical, like, Nashville story.
Savannah
Yes, exactly. Typical. Like, I'm just gonna move here on a dream and hope it works out.
Maddie
Yeah. Huh. I was like. Cause I'm not a. She was like, we're doing this. And I was like, what's my plan B? Like, I don't, you know, and. But I just felt the Lord, like, really, like, just do it and just go for it. And then like, little doors and opportunities would start opening up. And so there was just too much, like too many stars started to align to totally chicken out, you know?
Savannah
Wow. As you all know, I have been going non stop and, well, sometimes you'll see me running through the airport and heels and it is so uncomfortable. Tay
Our first big break was actually we didn't have a record deal at all. We only had a publishing deal, didn't have management. And then we wrote Girl in a country song on St. Patrick's Day of 2014. And then we ended up playing it for Scott Borchetta at big machine, like two months later at a 10 pan south round. And then we were on radio tour three months later. So from the time that we wrote Girl in the country song, we were on radio tour, had a record deal.
Maddie
In five months, and we were 18.
Tay
Yes.
Maddie
So it was like. I don't. I blacked out like a rocket ship.
Savannah
Yeah. I mean, yeah. Overnight Crazy.
Maddie
Yeah. It was so wild.
Savannah
And when you say radio tour, too, people don't really realize, but that is.
Maddie
Oh, you're playing three shows a day.
Savannah
Yeah.
Maddie
Sometimes multiple cities.
Tay
I don't even know if artists do radio tour anymore.
Maddie
They don't really. Yeah. I'm like, all of the newbies, I'm like, y'all are welcome. We walked.
Savannah
So y'all can have to.
Maddie
Yeah. Because it's all Spotify.
Savannah
Yeah, exactly.
Maddie
When we started, there was no Tick tock. There was barely Instagram. You couldn't post. It was just pictures on Instagram. So, like, so we didn't have to feed that beast of, like, content, content, content. And now I feel for these newer artists and we're having to keep up to.
Savannah
Because now you have to kind of reinvent yourself in a way, because the music industry is not what it used to be.
Maddie
No. It used to be like, the record label would, you know, like, promote your music and do all the advertising and all that stuff, and now it's on you to do it because you have this, you know, ability to go straight to your fans. And it's like, you know, that connection is what, you know, drives everything. And so it's like, you want to be an artist, you hope you want to be an influencer, too, because that's. That comes with the territory, you know, Nowadays, it used to not be that way, but I think.
Savannah
So do you guys utilize TikTok and, like.
Tay
Oh, yeah, we definitely try. Yeah, we, like, we always try to do these cool transition videos, but it always turns out so good.
Maddie
We're just like. We're old, and because we're doing.
Tay
We're just, like, trying to squeeze in an hour of time while the babies are napping to film all this content. And so you get what you get.
Maddie
Yeah, but we try, like, I think. I think it's a great tool, but we definitely don't put, like, all of our eggs in that basket, because I think it's like. I think some people can, like, get addicted to, like, oh, this got this many views. And it's just like. I just feel like it's not a healthy way to live if you're just, like, constantly. I don't know. My brain always feels yucky if I'm on social media too long.
Savannah
Too long. Yeah, because you're. And it's crazy because the more you're on it, you're like. And you see all this stuff pop up. You're like, were you in my head?
Maddie
No, but you don't even know this person. And it's like, reality is not reality. And I'm like, everybody, get off your phone and go stick your feet in some grass. That's real. Grass is real.
Savannah
Real.
Maddie
Like, go ground yourself.
Savannah
Yeah.
Maddie
Go, like, listen to the birds. Like, go do something real.
Tay
Yeah. Because the Instagram ads, they get me. I always.
Maddie
Y'all, I'm pretty good about. I mean, I was telling you, I'm so frugal. So I think that's the only reason that I don't, you know.
Savannah
Are you as well?
Tay
No, I'm not.
Maddie
No. She's my bougie queen. It's a balance, you know? But, like, I mean, girl, I used to clip coupons all the time. Like, I have retired my coupon clipping just because I don't have time. But I mean. And I don't know if that's ever gonna change. Like, we've had years where we make a lot of money and years where we make nothing.
Savannah
Well, yes.
Maddie
And that's just constantly.
Savannah
How has that been the ups and downs? Especially during the pandemic. During.
Maddie
So crazy enough with the pandemic. That was one of our best years, really. Because Die from a Broken Heart was like a giant hit in 2020.
Savannah
That. Okay. So that song. Oh, my God, I have listened to it time and time and time again.
Tay
Thank you.
Savannah
So with that song, was that based off of your own experience?
Maddie
Unfortunately, yes. Yes. If I got to. If I got to, like, punch someone with no consequence, it would be who inspired that song.
Tay
Yeah.
Savannah
Really?
Maddie
I don't think God's gonna give me that.
Tay
Yeah, I had a.
Savannah
Hey, he may. So was it so obviously based off of your own experience? Did you have your experience as well?
Maddie
No, it was. It was. Shoot.
Tay
Punching for me.
Maddie
Yeah, she's punching for you.
Savannah
Okay.
Maddie
Yeah, Yeah.
Tay
I mean, basically the music video is exactly kind of what happened down to the Jeep and.
Maddie
Yeah, all of it.
Savannah
But, like, story. Who has. Who haven't seen it.
Tay
Yes. Okay. So basically I was in this, like, three year relationship and we had moved in together. It was this whole thing. And then we broke up. And that when you've moved in together, it feels like a little mini divorce. I mean, like, you're splitting up things and like, oh, I paid for this and I paid for this and whatever. It was just a hot mess. And I was so heartbroken.
Maddie
Yeah, I was. We feel so deeply for each other. So it was a hard time.
Tay
And then we wrote Die from a Broken Heart two weeks later. And it wasn't even my idea. Our co writer just threw out the title and I was just like. Like, knife in the chest.
Maddie
Yeah.
Tay
Because I felt like I was gonna die. But, yeah, now I'm good.
Savannah
Was that song a big healing?
Maddie
Oh, my gosh. And it still is. I think pain is inevitable in life. We are not called to have a pain free life. Everyone walks through pain. And I'm like, One of my favorite things about faith is how God takes the most broken pieces and just makes something beautiful happen. And that song is literally. It's a total God thing. We didn't have a hit song for five years and we still haven't had a hit song since I from Broken Heart. But we're still here and we're still doing it. Yeah, absolutely. But, like, it was just a story of, like, you know, resilience and, like, how vulnerability just, like, wins. And that song still, you know, we. We both go through our own, you know, painful walks with different things. And that song still is, like, a reminder that, like, even in the hard times, even in the pain, like, God is still good, and there's something beautiful that's going to come out of the pain, and it's just, like, a great reminder for us.
Savannah
Love that. When I listen to that song, too, it's like when you talk about, like, calling your mom, basically, and, like, hey, mom, how do you get through this? Yeah, I lit. I spoke about. I mean, during my. So I just went through a breakup, like, two months ago.
Maddie
Girl, we got some songs on the album that are going to switch you through. Baby, don't worry.
Savannah
Blindsided.
Maddie
Oh, my God.
Savannah
Blindsided I feel. Yeah. And. But during that, I was like, people don't. No one prepared me for the adult heartbreak that, like, you so badly need your parents for. And then, like, I didn't all. I literally. I came home and that night, like, I just cried myself to sleep, and I had a dream that I was laying in bed, like, on my mom's chest, and I woke up. Oh, my gosh.
Maddie
Like, I knew I'm gonna cry.
Savannah
And I said, people don't prepare you for that, like, adult heartbreak. And you think, oh, I'm an adult. I can get through this, whatever.
Tay
But meanwhile, you need your mama.
Savannah
Exactly.
Tay
Yeah.
Maddie
Oh, my gosh.
Savannah
So I have listened to that song more times than I can count.
Tay
Thank you.
Savannah
I love it. So the new album.
Maddie
Yes.
Savannah
What. What types of songs are on it? What inspired the album?
Maddie
Oh, my gosh.
Tay
Sassy songs.
Maddie
Yeah, it's sassy songs. For real. We. I mean, we've got, like, we have this one song called Chasing babies and Raising dreams, and it's all about just, like, the push and pull of, like, leaving our babies to chase this dream, leave this dream for the other one, and just this, like, push and pull. But then there's also, like, really sassy, like, in your face songs, because we've just always been that way. Yeah. There's a song on there called Only Jesus that is one of my favorites. And the hook is like, you know, I could love you like you don't deserve, and, you know, love you, like, all that, but only Jesus is gonna love you like that. And it's just this like burn and I just love. It's just what we call like a sweet kill.
Savannah
See, I need to get better at that sweet kill, girl.
Maddie
Yeah, it's just basically, basically like the middle finger with a smile and a wink, you know, like, oh, but it's, you know, it's shiny and pretty. But yeah.
Savannah
God bless you.
Maddie
Yes. Bless your heart.
Tay
I think you'll like is called Somebody Will and it's nine years old. It's like the, obviously the oldest song that we wrote for this record.
Savannah
Yeah.
Tay
But I think you'll like it. Hopefully.
Maddie
Basically like tell me the, the hook is like if he doesn't, you know, do all the things that a man should do. Some somebody will.
Savannah
I will do that music video, girl.
Maddie
Yes. Oh my gosh. That's a great. But there's a lot of, there's a lot of like self worth themes in the album. Like I think we have this opportunity as young women to like speak and encourage other women and be like, hey, if he wanted to, he would and don't settle. And both of us have incredible, incredible husbands. And so we know what a healthy, strong man looks like, how they act. And it's like, we deserve that.
Savannah

Savannah
See, I love a good heartbreak. Oh, I know.
Maddie
Me too.
Savannah
Could you imagine, though, like, now that, like you said, that's your oldest song on the album, so nine years, and. But you couldn't imagine your life any other way now?
Maddie
No.
Savannah
You know, like, isn't that crazy how it works of, like, in that. In the midst of that heartbreak, you're like, oh, my God. Like, this. I'm never gonna find anyone. Life sucks. Like. Like, I thought this was where I was supposed to be. And, like, you're in the dumps.
Tay
Totally.
Maddie
Oh. And then it turns around.
Savannah
I know.
Tay
I remember when that relationship ended, I was like, man, if I'm ever gonna get married someday, I need somebody to literally knock on my door and say, hey, I'm your husband. And, like, this was meant to be. Because I. I don't. I ain't going looking. Like, I want to go tell her.
Maddie
What Josh told you when she was trying to. She was trying to. Friends with benefits. Yeah. And I was like, girl, you better don't.
Tay
Me and my husband started hanging out, and he was like, I'm scared to date you because I know if I date you, like, I'm gonna marry you. And so I was like, oh, ding, ding, ding.
Maddie
Girl. She was like. And I was like, t. This is a good man. Like, he has a good heart. He's smart.
Tay
I was so guarded, you know?
Maddie
Oh, my gosh. As anyone would. Yeah.
Savannah
When you're just destroyed and trampled on, you're like, all right, I'm not gonna give.
Tay
I'm sure that's where. Yeah, you are.
Savannah
Yeah. Yeah. Like what? I also. I will say, like, I have done so much therapy. Yes. I was like. Even when the relationship ended, I was like, you know what? I'm actually really happy. I allowed myself to feel something so deeply for someone and let them destroy me.
Maddie
Yeah.
Savannah
Because it was the greatest feeling in the world to feel. So it's like, you have to. You can sit and feel sorry for yourself or poor, pitiful me, or you can look at it as like, you know what you helped me feel? You helped me with this. Whatever.
Maddie
And I'm capable of loving this deeply when it is the right person. Like, I am capable of that love. Yes, Absolutely.
Savannah
I am so Excited for this album. And. So when does it come out?
Tay
May 2nd.
Savannah
May 2nd. So when this airs, the album's out?
Maddie
Yes, yes, yes. So album is out. And I just, like, I. My goal or my hope in my prayer with this album is, is that people just feel like. I don't know if you have. Like, when I'm going through things good, bad, and ugly, I have, like, my comfort albums. And I want this to be a comfort album because for the last, like, three years of making it, it's been a comfort album for me. Like, the title track, love and Light, is all about, like, you know what? Whatever happens, it's all love and light. Moving on, moving forward, keeping it positive. And even today, I was having some feelings and I put that song on, which I know is kind of weird, but it's gets me through, like, hard times. And I want to be, like. I want us to be artists that, like, feel like a hug when you listen to the records.
Savannah
I love that. I don't think there's enough, like, you, obviously, country music, it's trucks and beer and partying and all the things. And I miss the old country. That makes you feel and makes you. Yes.
Maddie
You have to pay attention to the lyrics and the storytelling. And we're like, we trying to keep it alive, girl. Like, I am not doing the. You know. And look, I'm all down for, like, a fun party song, but, like, I think we are humans. We are created to feel deeply and be more intentional.
Tay
For sure.
Maddie
Yeah. And just, like, not just. You know, I think sometimes, like, the parting stuff is just kind of, like, numbing. Maybe some things that need to be without a doubt, you know? Can you tell? We've done a lot of therapy.
Savannah
Hey, I love it. I'm a huge advocate for therapy. I'm like, it's okay to not be okay. And I believe that as adults, like, it's your responsibility to come to terms with your own trauma. Absolutely. And correct it and fix it and.
Maddie
Not pass it down because. Louder. For the people in the back. Don't pass it down. Okay.
Savannah
Thank you. I did this therapy, and it was. It was crazy. It was in la, but it was this MDMA therapy. I. I freaked out because I have never done a drug in my life.
Maddie
I did ketamine therapy, so it was, I think, yes, probably similar.
Savannah
Similar. And I've never done a drug in my life, like, ever. And so I was, like, freaking out, didn't know what to expect. And then, like, once I ingested the medicine, kind of freaked out. She was like, just lay down. You'll be fine. And then, like, once it kicked in, the things I saw and that. What. How deeply I felt things, all I kept saying throughout, like, it clicked in me. I don't know, maybe like an hour in. And I was like, oh, my God. She was like, what? I was like, I'm here so my kids don't have to be. That's all I kept saying in my therapy.
Maddie
Yeah, girl, I have full body chills.
Savannah
That's like. And you put your phone on airplane mode and you're recording the whole thing so that you can then go back and listen through it all. And throughout the whole recording, all I keep saying is, I'm here so my kids don't have to be. And like, anytime I would say it, it would be like the biggest smile on my face. Like, I was so. Yes. It was like a joy I've never felt.
Maddie
Yep.
Savannah
And I just believe that, like, as adults, that's our responsibility.
Maddie
Yeah.
Savannah
And that's why there's so many failed relationships out here. Because you have so many unhealed adults who are entering into relationship.
Maddie
And they Bringing it all. Yes.
Savannah
You bring it all in, and then they just destroy everyone in their path.
Maddie
Oh, my gosh. Yeah, it's. I had the same experience, like, with ketamine, where I was just healing some, like, wounds that kind of came. It was like 20 years ago that my brain had just, like, protected me from, and it just kind of uncovered all that. But it was like, I just felt so grateful and I felt so close to God. And now it was, like, administered in, like, office. You know, Doctor, let's make this very clear. Yes. We're not just like tripping on drugs over here, but. Yeah, and we. I had to do, like, an evaluation to make sure I was a good candidate.
Savannah
Oh, like therapy before?
Maddie
Yes.
Savannah
I think I. Mine was like two or three months before. It was like a session every week to make sure that, like, you were.
Maddie
A good candidate, that emotionally prepared and, like. And it was so life changing for me. But I'm. I'm so with you. Like, especially being a mom now. I'm like, my thing that I always say is life is so hard. Every single person in the world is walking through pain, is gonna go through pain. And having a baby, just imagining him going through pain in life, like, oh, my gosh, it makes my heart sick. But he's gonna have to heal from pain that happens in life, but it's not gonna be for me because I am doing what I need to do to make sure my stuff's not passed down and that I am, you know, we're having open con and he's one and a half. So I have time. Exactly.
Savannah
Right.
Maddie
But just. I refuse, like, just all the, like, generational stuff on my side and even on my husband's side. We both are just, like, this is not touching our kid. Like, we don't care whose feelings we're hurting or what we. What. Like, these are the boundaries. And, like, we're protecting our baby. So, like, we're doing all this so he doesn't have to do it. Exactly. It's like the millennial thing where we're just like, we're not with the passing down of the trauma.
Savannah
And I say I'm like, our generation. And, like, within the few years, I'm like, we've done some interesting things that I don't agree with, but one thing we have done is, like, normalize that it's okay to not be okay. And very put mental health first. Self awareness.
Maddie
Yeah.
Savannah
That I'm like, thank goodness.
Maddie
Yeah. That's, like, the cool thing to be mentally stable. Like, thank God. Right? Whatever you gotta do, we gotta be medicated. We've been there. Like, you do whatever you gotta do to be, you know, mentally. Mentally healthy and stable and. Yeah.
Savannah
So what would. Because you talked about your kids and you also spoke about the song on the album about, like, raising kids, chasing dreams, just all the things. How do you deal with that guilt? Because I know, like, even when I got Chloe and Grace in, it was really hard for me to, like, miss a baseball game or to leave and go do something. Like, I felt so much guilt if I couldn't show up.
Maddie
Yeah.
Tay
I mean, I think it's, like, honestly, every day it's a battle just finding that balance. But for me, I don't know if I would technically call it, like, I don't know if I feel guilt. I definitely feel sadness and, like, miss my kids a ton whenever I'm not with them. But also at the same time, Maddie and I just try to remind ourselves, like, our kids are getting to see us, like, fill. Fulfill our hearts and, like, go chase a dream.
Maddie
And.
Tay
Yeah, it may not be glamorous and we may miss some weekends and some gymnastics and music class and stuff, but I think just, like, watching us fill our cup.
Savannah
Yeah.
Tay
Is important too. Yeah. And just finding that balance, but it definitely. It's hard, for sure.
Savannah
Oh, yeah.
Maddie
There's, like, the song. It makes a lot of sense because, like, there's Every time I pull out of the driveway to, like, travel. I cry and. And, you know, I'm like, I think that's. And not to be, like, tooting my own horn, but I think that makes you a good parent. Like, if you care. Like, I think if you weren't, you know, sad to leave your kids and, like, you know, if you. If you weren't sad about those things, it's like, maybe there's not a connection. You know, maybe there's, like, a lack of something. So I think it's just normal. Like, normal to miss your baby.
Savannah
Yeah. And I think it's what I've said, especially with, like, now that I have chloe and she's 12, I'm like, it's hard for them to understand now, but when they become adults, they're gonna look back and be like, oh, my gosh, like, wow, not only did this person take care of me, but they also were out chasing a dream or providing and making sure there's a roof over our head and good schools and whatever it may be.
Maddie
Absolutely.
Savannah
So, like, it's such a struggle, and I'm like, all right, you don't understand it now.
Tay
Yes.
Savannah
But you will 20 years from now.
Maddie
Oh, my gosh. Absolutely. Yeah. And I'm like, I just want my. I'm like, I'm gonna screw so much up. That's just being a parent. Like, you can't. No one gets it. Perfect. But I'm like, as long as my kid knows, there's nothing you can do or say that will change my love for you. Like, I want my son to know God's love through me. Like, and he will know, like, unconditional love through me and my husband, you know, like, that's my goal. I'm like, I might screw this up. I might lose my temper. My son knows he's unconditionally loved, and me and my husband, we do not get complacent about growth. Like, we are constantly trying to grow and show him. Just always challenging yourself and never settling, never getting into a routine that's not healthy and things like that.
Savannah
I love that. So what would you guys say is your key to your marriages?
Tay
Oh, man.
Maddie
Ooh.
Tay
Laughter. I would say just being silly, being goofy. Josh and I are literally always laughing, and I think it's the sexiest thing in the world. The more I'm laughing, the more I'm like, come on. You know, See, that's.
Savannah
I'm the same way. It's like having that truly best friend.
Tay
Yes, exactly.
Savannah
That you can just laugh with, joke with it, just for Me that makes me want to be more intimate, whether it's, like, holding your hand or whatever. It may be like, when you get that laugh.
Maddie
Oh, my gosh. Yeah.
Savannah
It's worth a gazillion dollars.
Maddie
Oh, yeah. I. So me and my husband have been together for 15 years, so we've been married for six.
Monster.com
Shoot.
Maddie
What year is it? Okay, six years. Yes. That's terrible. But we met in high school. Same year I met. T was the year I met Jonah.
Savannah
Holy cow.
Maddie
So we have had, you know, we've grown up together. We were long distance. We moved in together. And so, like, our history is just, like, wild. But I would say, like, we try to approach our relationship almost like a team. Like, there's times when, like, we are, you know, arguing about something, or, like, you know, we're exhausted because we haven't slept because the baby. Whatever. And it's like, we just are like, hey, we're on the same team. Like, we're on the same team.
Savannah
Yes.
Maddie
We just got. You know, we have to just, like, what's the gameplay like? And I wasn't even an athlete, but for some reason, that makes sense to me. Yeah. What's the game plan? But laughter and a lot of forgiveness, I think. But forgiveness with change, you know? Like, I think sometimes people, like, forgive, and then you just move on and, like, do the same thing. But for Joan and I, when there is issues or speed bumps or, you know, whatever in our relationship, like, you have to be able to forgive and completely forgive. Yeah. You. You can't hold that against.
Savannah
You have to forgive and move forward. You can't forgive and then go back and pick it up when it's convenient for you.
Maddie
Exactly. And that's, like, more the dynamic I saw growing up. So it was a lot of undoing of that for me. And. But him and I, like, just having fun and laughing and. But I. I saw this video where it was, like, this old couple, and it was like, imagine how many times they had to forgive each other to be where they are. And I. That's, like. With me and Jonah, there's been so much also.
Savannah
I think that's a song.
Tay
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Maddie
Let's clip that so we don't forget.
Savannah
How many times you have to forgive to get to the end.
Maddie
Absolutely. Yeah. And, like. And just not holding holds things over each other's head. I mean, I used to fight dirty. I was horrible.
Savannah
I will say I was.
Maddie
I was. When I was younger, I was, like, the meanest thing I can think of. And my sweet Jonah he's, like, so cool, calm, and collected. Like, doesn't speak unless he has something to say. Like, just. Just a true, like, man of God. But. And I'm like, babe, thank you for forgiving me for, like, so many years. Cause I was a psycho, and I. I was. I totally was.
Savannah
Okay, so do y'all want more kids?
Maddie
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Tay
I think I'm done.
Savannah
I think I'm done.
Tay
Yeah.
Maddie
I always say I want four, but I only have one, so that could definitely change when we have another one. But it is hard just with timing, because I toured till I was 36 weeks pregnant. She toured till she was 32 weeks pregnant. And so, like, it's hard on your body being that pregnant and, like, touring and stuff. So there's, like, some timing things you kind of gotta, like. And it's all God's timing, but, like, just trying to set us up to win. But, yeah, I'm like, I will definitely be having another, and I'm sure our team's gonna be like, no, not another baby. Not another pregnancy. No, I'm just kidding. Our team is, like, all family people, so they'll be psyched.
Savannah
But that is amazing. All right, so you're on tour?
Maddie
Yes.
Tay
Yes.
Savannah
And when. When does that wrap up?
Tay
I think we're going till November, maybe.
Maddie
Yeah, something like that. So. But yeah, we've definitely, like, tried to find the balance between, like, home life and then writing another album. Because it's like, when you put out an album, you have to already have that. Yeah, absolutely. It's similar, like, with the podcast. You just got to have them loaded up.
Savannah
Exactly.
Monster.com
Yeah.
Savannah
All right, so where can people go to find your tour dates?
Maddie
It's a really cute website, too. We had. We were, like, made it all cute.
Savannah
I love it. So they can go find your tour dates@maddyandtay.com.
Maddie
Yes.
Savannah
And then your album, they can find. What's the title?
Maddie
Love and Light. Yeah.
Savannah
Love and Light, baby. We love it. Love and Light on Spotify, Apple Music, everything that's right. Where you listen to your music.
Maddie
Yes, absolutely. It's there.
Savannah
Well, thank you all so much for coming on. I love you.
Maddie
We love you. I was like, I know we're gonna hit it off, because trust me, this.
Savannah
Was not work to me. There are some. I've had some people come on my podcast. I mean, I'm not gonna drop names, but I have had to, like, pull. Pull teeth to, like, have conversation. And it's like, oh, how much longer do we have, Girl?
Maddie
I feel there's times that we do interviews and I'm like, we wrote such a deep, like, thoughtful album. Can we, like, do talk about it? Yeah, like, not just like.
Savannah
So do y'all fight?
Maddie
What the. Oh, my God. Come on. No. Why would we be in a duo for 15 years?
Savannah
God. Hey, some of these are.
Tay
You never know.
Maddie
Yeah, just, you know, the softball questions where you're like, what in the. Oh, Lord have mercy. You didn't even. You didn't even research nothing. Okay, whatever. Moving on.
Savannah
That is amazing. All right, well, thank y'all so much.
Maddie
