Welcome back to this week's episode of Unlocked. As you know, we have been talking about all things health and wellness and just living life to the fullest. And I am super excited for our next guest. We have on Dr. Joshua Red. Right.
Host 3
I said it.
Host 2
Right.
Host 3
Okay.
Host 2
Just making sure. Welcome.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah, thanks for having me.
Host 2
Super excited to have you on. I came across your Instagram and I was like, okay, this seems like a great fit. I went down the rabbit hole of just hearing all the tips and tricks and the actual truth. And you are a functional medicine doctor, right?
Dr. Joshua Red
That's right.
Host 2
Okay, so can you explain to people what that actually means?
Dr. Joshua Red
Well, we see patients from all over the world, probably 300 patients a day. We probably own one of the largest functional medicine clinics in the United States. And we see really sick chronic patients, patients that have gone to 10 different doctors. Nobody knows what in the world's going on with them. And Our goal is to do all the medical testing to identify the underlying imbalances that are actually driving that patient's problem, rather than just giving a pill for the symptoms. So it's way more complex, way more complicated. It's root cause medicine. It's the best there is if you have a chronic disease.
Host 2
And that's definitely a different viewpoint than what, like, your average, everyday doctor sees it as.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah, it's definitely getting more. It's getting more common now. Back when I started, you know, 17 years ago, I was like, I don't
Host 2
think anyone knew what functional medicine was. 17 years ago.
Dr. Joshua Red
I was like a guy on an island all by himself, basically. But now it's getting more popular. But, yeah, you're exactly right. Where your standard doctor, these patients might suffer with an autoimmune condition or a thyroid problem, and they just herd these patients around like sheep and give them pretty much the same treatment regardless. And in reality, it's more of a systemic issue, and there's more underlying imbalances that could be driving that patient's symptoms and problems. And. And if you don't get to the root cause, then these patients feel like they're crazy. Their symptoms don't improve when you're sitting
Host 2
in front of a doctor. I've said this so many times before, and it was like, part of the reason I started up my company, Good Girl Rx. But I've said so many women feel like they go to the doctor's office and they just feel left there like you may go have your appointment, and then you're just a number to them. Right. And you also go in, you're like, I feel this way, or this is what's going on. They're like, are you sure? Are you sure you feel that way? And it's like, no, I'm just sitting here lying.
Ad Voice 2
I know.
Dr. Joshua Red
It's absolutely bananas sitting in front of a patient, listening to what they've experienced over a prolonged period of time, and nobody's been able to help them. Right. One of my first patients, she had multiple autoimmune conditions. She had been suffering for 20 years. Her son was asked to draw a picture of her at school, and he brought it home. And it was a picture of her in bed, and she pulled it out of his backpack, and she's like, what's this, honey? And he's like, that's you, mom, because you're always in bed. But this is the reality of the patients we're seeing. They feel like they're crazy. They feel like they're lazy. They lost all hope. And in reality, their doctors are just clinical dinosaurs. They're not getting to the mechanism of why they feel bad. So.
Host 2
And what led you into this line of work?
Dr. Joshua Red
I had family members with something called Hashimoto's, which is an autoimmune condition that attacks the thyroid, and other family members with type 2 diabetes. And I saw as a young kid just how they were treated with pills, and nothing was being done to, like, their diet, lifestyle, nutrition of that stuff. And I always thought that was really weird. So I had the option to go to medical school or go to chiropractic school initially. And I was like, I don't want to go to medical school because I don't want to learn. I want to learn as much as I can about nutrition. And they didn't really offer nutrition at that time, and then after.
Host 2
Which is crazy. I mean, it's not like you're ancient, like, totally. I mean, how long ago was this that they weren't offering?
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah, 20 years ago.
Host 2
That's crazy.
Dr. Joshua Red
And then, since then, I went to chiropractic school, started my first functional medicine clinic. I never really adjusted anybody. It was all just functional medicine, blood chemistry, medical testing. And then I went.
Host 2
What was your. So your education? Right. It's pretty hefty.
Dr. Joshua Red
Luckily, I'm still married. My wife's here watching. That's great. But I went to chiropractic school, and then I did a master's in human nutrition and functional medicine, and then I did immunology degree at Johns Hopkins with an emphasis in molecular biology and immunology. And that's where I learned about stem cells.
Host 2
So you are not stupid. That is for sure.
Dr. Joshua Red
And then I went back to naturopathic medical school and then did a residency in regenerative medicine and STE cells.
Host 2
Okay. And so definitely the whole stem cell topic I find to be very interesting.
Dr. Joshua Red
It's so cool. Stem cells are going to change the world.
Host 2
They will. But do you feel that we are so behind the curve here in the
Dr. Joshua Red
US The US Is behind in a lot of different things. Right. There's 13 developed countries, and we're dead last when it comes to health care, and we're the Most expensive by 3. So the US isn't really like a pillar to look towards, unfortunately. But when it comes to stem cells, there's so many different things that we're doing, and it is getting better every year. The way that we. We treated patients five years ago is different than the way we treat them today. And it's. It's really cool. The advance are getting better and better.
Host 2
Yeah, it was crazy. I saw something scrolling through social media the other day and it was this clinic, I think in Mexico or somewhere. And it was this mother who has a child who's autistic and, and was talking about just like the self harm and the outburst and all of that. And then she took her child to this stem cell clinic and got stem cells and it was night and day different. Like in their case, it was no more self harm, no more outburst. It was the craziest thing to see. And you could see the difference in the before and after videos of the child.
Dr. Joshua Red
Totally. If you combine stem cells with functional medicine and underlying, you know, issues, it's. It's a game changer.
Host 2
That's, that's absolutely insane. So you did say the, how do you say it? The Hashimoto's.
Dr. Joshua Red
Hashimoto's.
Host 2
Right. So there's actually right now like an epidemic in women for sure. With that.
Ad Voice 3
Correct.
Dr. Joshua Red
It's the number one autoimmune condition in the, in the country right now.
Host 2
And what exactly is it?
Dr. Joshua Red
It's where your immune system destroys the thyroid at a rapid pace. But here's the catch. Most doctors, they just look at your TSH marker or thyroid and they don't ever address the autoimmune component. And so these patients just get herded around like sheep and they're treated all the exact same and they continue to feel worse. The doctor might put them on thyroid medication, which is important if you have low thyroid. But the bigger, more complicated thing is that this patient has an immune problem, not a thyroid problem. And so addressing the immune component can significantly improve that patient's quality of life and overall health.
Host 2
And why do you think we're seeing it in so many women in particular?
Dr. Joshua Red
It's a great question. There's a lot of different things that we're exposed to from an environment standpoint. Birth control is one of the biggest things that will actually trigger a low thyroid, which is quite, quite fascinating really. Yeah. If you have estrogen dominance, with which birth control causes estrogen dominance, one of the biggest things that will trigger the immune response to start to attack itself.
Host 3
Wow.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah. Our high stress lives are really crappy diets. We don't really even eat real food anymore. Like when we do a 24 hour diet recall with our patients, we'll ask what they ate and they're like, I had a Diet Coke for breakfast with some, you know, grapefruit. Or then they fast, prolonged period of time and they have Something else that's super processed, and it's just not real food. And so I think the combination of all that stuff, it's causing our immune system to freak out. And there we go.
Host 2
And is that one of the reasons you wrote, you know, the whole Reset, right? The whole Reset diet.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah. I have a book called the Inflammatory Reset that was top 10 in the country.
Host 1
Wow.
Dr. Joshua Red
And it basically is like the last 16 years, everything we've learned with our autoimmune patients and patients with chronic conditions, what diet helps them the most? And so we identified the most inflammatory foods in our clinics. We're constantly checking inflammatory markers, which is so important.
Host 2
Yes.
Dr. Joshua Red
We'll have so many different patients go from doctor to doctor, and they're not testing the right markers, but their inflammation is crazy high, and they have all these symptoms and problems. And so we've identified which foods cause the most inflammation and which foods are more anti inflammatory. And we put that into a book and kind of talked about what drives inflammation. What are the most common tests for inflammation? How can you improve inflammation? And we spell it all out, which is kind of nice.
Host 2
That's awesome. Because you are a true believer that inflammation truly is the root cause to a lot of things.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah. Inflammation is like the. An epidemic right now that's happening. And.
Host 2
Well, I know in your book you say that chronic inflammation is behind everything from diabetes to infertility to Alzheimer's.
Host 3
Why?
Host 2
Can you break that down?
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah. Inflammation is really an immune problem. When our immune system becomes chaotic, we have high inflammation. So think about, like, when you sprain your ankle and you get that inflammation in the ankle, you can get this inflammatory response throughout your whole body, and that causes your brain not to function properly, that causes your liver not to function well. That causes your intestinal tract to be a mess, causes your blood sugar levels to be chaotic. And so really, if you can calm down inflammation in a person's body, it minimizes so many different problems from a physiological standpoint, for sure.
Host 2
Yeah. Because I guess it makes sense, right? Like if you have inflammation, you have so many things in your body that are probably working overtime.
Host 1
Yeah.
Host 2
Which then causes more issues.
Dr. Joshua Red
100%. It would be like there's a massive fire going on in your house and the fire alarm's going off, and all we want to do is just simply turn up the fire alarm as we let the fire just continue to blaze. The whole goal is, okay, well, what's the mechanism behind that fire? And let's actually put out the fire instead of just turning out the fire. Alarm.
Host 2
Yeah.
Dr. Joshua Red
Right.
Host 2
And something else, too, which I love is childhood trauma. Right. Like, you've spoken about this a lot, and childhood trauma in your body and what that does. The responses. I know, for me, you know, I have referenced before, like, my therapist was like, no, you don't have ptsd. You have chronic ptsd.
Dr. Joshua Red
Totally.
Host 2
And I was like, okay. I'm like, okay, well, that does. I forgot what it was. But I was in this intensive therapy program. It's like, all right, circle these things. Like, if it happened to you as a kid, like, did you endure. Have someone close to you that had cancer? Did you endure sexual abuse? Did you. All these things. And if it was like, yes, at the end and you added it up, it's like you. You have a more like, way higher chances of contracting, you know, getting cancer or going to prison or so many different things that trauma does in the body. So can you explain that?
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah, and you're 100% right. And this is something to be mindful of. As you have childhood trauma, for example, it really causes you to be in this fight or flight response. And just to give me an idea, I'll tell you all the different things that this causes. If you're in a fight or flight response and your cortisol is constantly being produced and the adrenal glands aren't functioning well, it essentially will trigger the immune response to turn into an autoimmune disease. It causes much higher inflammation. It causes insulin resistance. It steals away your sex hormones and converts them into cortisol. So now you have all this hormonal dysfunction. It actually degenerates the intestinal lining. So our intestinal lining should break down tissue and then restore, and break down tissue and restore. If you're in this constant fight or flight response, your intestinal tract just breaks down over and over and over again to where you start to absorb certain proteins in the bloodstream that you shouldn't, and then that causes your immune response to freak out, and that causes way more inflammation. So you've heard of, like, intestinal permeability or leaky gut, for example, childhood trauma. And this constant fight or flight response causes that intestinal permeability issue at a rapid pace. Also, it causes brain inflammation. So when you're in this fight or flight response, your brain. Tell me if this is way too much inflammation.
Host 2
No, no, it's great.
Host 3

Dr. Joshua Red
But check this out. Your brain can't fire to what's called the enteric nervous system. So if I was to dissect your brain, I'd pull your brain and all the neurological tissue with it out. You would see this huge web engulfing the whole intestinal tract. It's called the enteric nervous system. It's pretty much one organ, right? You've heard of like the second brain or whatever that may be. So your brain should fire to the intestinal tract. If it can't, then what happens is you have constipation. You have poor blood flow to the gut. You have decreased digestive enzymes and decreased acl. So you're not digesting your food properly. So then you have constipation. You have gas, bloating, digestion, inflammation, brain inflammation. Your brain's not functioning well, but the mechanism mechanism is your brain's not firing to the intestinal tract properly just from that. So to sum it all up, we have brain inflammation, we have poor brain firing to the enteric nervous system, we have poor digestion, we have cortisol defects, we have hormonal imbalances, we have blood sugar imbalances, we have methylation issues of the liver and poor detoxification. So childhood trauma and this constant fight or flight response, look at all the different mechanisms that actually are triggered from just that one thing. It's huge, and it needs to be talked about.
Host 2
Yeah. Is there a way to heal it or do you just have to deal with it?
Dr. Joshua Red
There's tons of things that you can do to heal it. And one of the most important things is to get the brain to fire more effectively to the enteric nervous system, which in turn decreases inflammation, improves absorption, improves digestions, improves the immune response. When someone's in this, like, constant fight or flight, the biggest goal for us is to try to do everything we can to get them out of it. And you can do, like, neurological exercises, which is kind of fun. So one of the things that you can do is gargle water aggressively for two to three hours or two to three minutes a day.
Host 2
Two to three hours?
Dr. Joshua Red
I was like two to three minutes a day. On top of that, there's something called an alpha stem that you can clip to your ears and that fires the brain to the enteric nervous system as well. One really important thing when somebody has this is we really have to stabilize glucose and do all that they can to eat more frequently throughout the day and minimize sugars that really stimulate, spike blood sugar levels or drops them. Because if you're already suffering with a stressor, then if you don't, if you're not like 100% dialed in with your diet, it's going to put a lot more stress on the adrenal glands, and that's just going to be like a adrenal overload, essentially. And so a lot of these patients, we have to be really cautious with what they eat, how they eat, when they eat, what they're exposed to from an environmental standpoint.
Host 2
Well, it's also crazy because it's like, all right, so if we have all this trauma as a child, but the trauma had absolutely nothing to do with, you know, how we ate or how we actually physically treated our body, I feel like it's so hard for everyday person to understand and be like. But the trauma was like physical, emotional, whatever it may have been. How is what I eat gonna change that?
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah. Now what it did was it created physiological issues. And now in order to get it back, you have to be. You're so much more volatile now. And so you have to now start from the diet, start from lifestyle, start from environment to get it all under control. So it removes your body from this stress response and this fight or flight response.
Host 2
And that goes. That kind of leads to the next thing, which is environmental toxins. And screen time. Why? I just watched the documentary on Netflix about all the plastic.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah.
Host 2
And I was shocked, honestly. I mean, yeah, they cut out the plastic and in 60 days the markers were totally different. And that was a shock to me. So what, you know, what about the toxic load that we're consuming? What is it doing to our bodies?
Dr. Joshua Red
We're exposed to so many more things than we were even 30 years ago. Right. And like you said, microplastics are pretty much everywhere. We're constantly surrounded with things that jack up our hormones, that end up causing problems with our blood sugar levels, that end up causing inflammation within our body. And so doing all that we can to minimize those exposures is really important. Just receipts, for example, or plastic that's heated up, whether in a microwave or outside, just avoiding those types of things could be huge for us. But on top of that, there's things that you can do to improve what's called your immune resilience. And so if you do things to help improve inflammation and improve detoxification, just that alone will allow you to be more around that stuff without having negative effects. If you have poor detoxification, if you have high inflammation, if you have higher stress, higher issues like that, and you surround yourself with that, then you're setting yourself up for a nightmare for sure.
Ad Voice 1
Yeah.
Host 2
You're setting yourself up for failure. And when it comes to screen time, does it affect you or does it. Not really. And especially with children, you know, we're seeing it a lot now of either people let their kids on phones at 2, 3 years old versus other individuals are like, no, we're a screen free household.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah. Screen time causes lots of issues. So blue light right within our, within our brain and our eyes can cause and create so many different problems. It can cause brain inflammation, it can diminish our brain from firing properly. It can actually cause brain inflammation too. And then it causes problems with our sleep patterns, our cortisol awakening response, a number of different things. Right?
Host 2
Yeah.
Dr. Joshua Red
Kids are really, when I look at some of the most heartbreaking things. They're kind of like the individuals in the population right now. That's the most heartbreaking because you look to see what kids have for breakfast, they'll have like pancakes or cereal, then they'll go to school and they'll have like chicken nuggets and milk and then they'll come home. Who knows what they have for dinner. And then on top of that, they're constantly on these screens and then their brain isn't able to develop properly, then they're acting out, they don't get great grades or they have all these different neurobehavioral type issues.
Host 2
Yeah, I saw something. There was a study that was done that showed like kids that were introduced to a screen at a certain age had a higher chance of having ADHD and other issues.
Dr. Joshua Red
Your brain has to develop by the time you're 25. You go through this process and usually 25, it stops if you do things.
Host 2
So you're telling us there's no Hope for the 25 year olds that haven't quite grown up?
Dr. Joshua Red
Unfortunately there's not as much hope. And like we joke about it, but check this out. So there's research that shows that if somebody has brain inflammation or they have, they're constantly exposed to blue light and their brain isn't developing properly by the time they get to 24, if it's not developed properly, the soup's not cooking anymore. Right. Unfortunately. And research shows that if, if it's not developed by the age of 25, then incarceration rates explode, marital divorces explode, having all sorts of neurobehavioral issues after that point, it causes a lot of problems. And research shows that. So if the most important thing right now is to try to improve the kid's brain development, improve the brain inflammation, set that kid up to a point to where we can optimize their overall health and brain so that by the time they're 25 they're not gonna have, they're not stuck with long term issues.
Host 2
And for people sitting at home right now who are like, alright, I wanna jumpstart kind of this healthy life, I wanna get rid of some toxins in my life. What would you say is the number one toxin people should get rid of?
Dr. Joshua Red
And start with as far as environmental, plastic's one of the easiest ones. Right. Try to minimize things that have plastic. Don't put plastic in a microwave and then eat dinner with it afterwards. Don't drink out of a hot plastic cup or hot plastic, you know Bottle, whatever that may be. Plastic is one of those easier ones that you could do. From a dietary standpoint, gluten and dairy are probably the most inflammatory foods that we see in our.
Host 2
The best things ever.
Dr. Joshua Red
The best things ever. I mean, it's true.
Host 2
Bread, pasta, please.
Dr. Joshua Red
The most inflammatory thing that we see in our clinics is gluten and dairy and then anything that's high in sugar. So if most of the population avoided sugar, like your candies, your desserts, I mean, everything that we have is just. We're getting pharmaceutical doses of sugar right now.
Host 2
I mean, there are so many. There was, it's funny, actually started in Utah, I think. Crumble.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah.
Host 2
Yeah. They're under fire right now because of a new drink that they just released.
Dr. Joshua Red
186 grams of sugar.
Host 2
Yes. 186 grams of sugar and one drink.
Host 1
Yeah.
Dr. Joshua Red
Really? We see so many patients from all the world and if all we did was just stabilize glucose.
Host 2
Yeah.
Dr. Joshua Red
If that's the only thing we treated, we would see significant improvements in pretty much every chronic case that we see just by stabilizing. Stabilizing glucose. So we'll give our patients a continuous glucose monitor and we'll have them wear that where you get like a 24 hour real time blood sugar levels. Right. If they can keep their blood sugar levels 80 to 130, regardless of what they eat, their inflammation, their overall health is going to improve substantially.
Host 3
Wow.
Dr. Joshua Red
That's just that.
Host 2
One thing to know. I know a lot of health freaks who are starting to wear like a glucose monitor at all times just to see the fluctuations.
Dr. Joshua Red
It's great. Like I have one on right now.
Host 2
Really?

and so with the 30 day inflammatory reset which your book it was USA Today top 10 in January, which is huge and the title says it all. But is it? Can someone easily follow it like the busy mom at home? Like is it going to be more of a hassle than it's going to help?
Dr. Joshua Red
So here's the thing is what we do within the book, what I say in the book is you don't have to be like 100% a whole anti inflammatory diet. If you're severely sick and you've gone to 10 different doctors, you're gonna be motivated to follow the book to a T, no questions asked, right? But if you're just trying to live healthier, you can make some of these subtle changes and by like small and simple things or great things brought to pass. So you just making subtle improvements can make a big change in your health. Like what Brittany and I did 10 years ago with our kids wasn't near what it is now. Like we're making these slow and steady changes over the course of these last 10 years and now we're living a way healthier lifestyle than we were 10 years ago. And so I like to tell my patients like hey look, the whole goal is just like continued improvement. What one or two things can you change right now? If you're a busy mom or you have lots going on, make Those changes. And then once you feel like you've dominated those two changes, then make some more changes. And once you feel like you've overcome those, it makes more changes.
Host 2
Yeah.
Dr. Joshua Red
And what the book will tell you is it will break down what inflammation is, what drives it, how to test for it, and then it will give you a ton of different ideas that you can do if you're really, really sick and no one can help you. Follow to a T. If you just need help and you want advice on how best to help your kids, then start making these subtle changes. And that's always fun.
Host 2
That's what I think. I think a good reminder for people is like just a 1 degree shift. Right? A 1 degree shift every single day. It adds up. It may not feel like it in the moment, but it's a lot like the gospel. Yeah.
Dr. Joshua Red
Right. Like, I really think God, like every one of us is on a path back to God a little bit differently.
Host 2
Yeah.
Dr. Joshua Red
I think God is like, hey, look, just improve whether I'm clear up here or whether I'm down here. Just improve slowly but surely.
Host 2
Love that.
Dr. Joshua Red
That's it. Right?
Host 2
I love that. And so what would you. What does the first 24 hours on the plan look like?
Dr. Joshua Red
So we have you drink a lot more water. You'd be shocked at how many patients come into our clinic and we see that they're severely dehydrated just on labs. And we'll ask them, like, what did you drink? And they had. I had orange juice for breakfast and I had a Diet Coke at night. Right.
Host 2
So, like, how much water should you be drinking?
Dr. Joshua Red
We like to drink, have you drink half your body weight in ounces. So it's not too bad. But just even just that is way better than what most people drink. A lot of people are severely dehydrated. The other thing is that there's a lot of our female population that can't fast, meaning if they fast or they go prolonged periods of time without eating, then it actually puts more of a stress response on the adrenal glands and then will convert sex hormones into cortisol and then they have hormonal issues. So just eating every two and a half to three hours is really important for a bulk of our patients. There's a lot of patients where fasting's incredible. Yeah, there's a lot of patients. If you have a trauma, a past trauma or cortisol issue, fasting could be like rat poisoning for you.
Host 2
That is insane.
Dr. Joshua Red
So I've never had patients have severe symptoms from eating every two Two to three hours. Yeah, I've had lots of patients get really jacked up by fasting. So just.
Host 2
And that isn't that crazy because fasting went through, I feel like it was such a fad, like it went through such a time of, oh, a 6, 8, 12 hour fast and you know, fast in the morning and this and that. And everyone was fasting.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah, 100%. And if you had a trauma response, cortisol defects, fasting could be like rat poisoning for you. So just eating every two to three hours a day and eating more like just real foods instead of inflammatory foods. So you have like vegetables and proteins, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, peas, just eating throughout the day like a rabbit versus eating highly inflammatory food for breakfast, waiting eight hours until you eat again, so on.
Host 2
Obviously with functional medicine things are done a lot differently and I feel like you run a lot of the labs that everyday doctors aren't running. What would you say when you have patients come in, what are the key labs that you like to run?
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah, that's a great question. Well one, even if I'm running basic labs, there's still issues because that lab range is a sick range. It's not a healthy range.
Host 2
Yes, that's what's so infuriating to me. I'm like a number could be really high or really low, but it's within range and the range is like this long. And the doctor's like, oh no, you're fine. I don't want to be within range, I want to be healthy.
Dr. Joshua Red
Totally. As over the last 40 years these ranges have become more broad and more broad and more broad because it's a six month average of patients who've gotten their blood work done at that lab. So each lab will have a little bit different ranges, but the sicker a population is, the more broad those ranges get. So even if I was to test, just a basic test, you could have imbalances within that lab range that are almost outside of the lab range that will affect the patient and cause symptoms. So that's one is just knowing how to actually read blood chemistry is really important. On top of that, one of my favorite things to do is to actually check for inflammatory markers and see like we'll have so many patients go from doctor to doctor and the doctor literally tells them you're normal when they have 15 different symptoms and the patient feels like they're freaking crazy.
Ad Voice 2
Right?
Host 2
Yes, you and that. I feel like that then turns into like a mental health thing at that point because you start freaking out and you're Like, I know I'm not crazy. Like, this is how I feel.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah. And really all that's happening is the doctor's a clinical dinosaur and doesn't know how to actually read blood chemistry.
Host 2
I love that clinical dinosaur. That's amazing.
Dr. Joshua Red
So for us, there's some other labs. Like, if a patient has a lot of chronic symptoms and they go to the doctor and they're normal, then here's the labs that I would run. I'd run Hashimoto's antibodies all day long. It's really simple and really cheap if you pay cash. TPO antibody and antithyroglobulin antibody, the most common autoimmune condition in the country. And then I would run inflammatory markers. So a C reactive protein can simply tell you if you have inflammation. Homocysteine is a really cheap marker to run, too. But if you have a methylation problem, you'll have higher homocysteine levels. Homocysteine, if it's above 8, you have methylation issues. You want to get it below 8 and simply just taking methylated B vitamins. Well, a lot of people have methylation issues.
Host 2
Methylation, yeah.
Dr. Joshua Red
You've heard of the MTHFR gene mutation, for example. Yeah, you're exactly right. So that's an easy marker to run. Uric acid is another inflammatory marker. Glucose serum and hemoglobin A1C are super easy. There's a marker called lactic dehydrogenase. If that's high, you have inflammation. If it's lower, it means your cells aren't accepting glucose effectively or they're not getting enough glucose. So we live in this, like, metabolic, diseased, sick population, and most of our patients will have reactive hypoglycemia or insulin resistance.
Host 2
And that's the thing is if you would do all of this blood work and so you know what you're dealing with, I feel like you can correct it nine times out of ten, so much easier.
Dr. Joshua Red
Vitamin D, ferritin is usually for, like, an iron. If you have too high of ferritin, it's actually you have more inflammation than not, or you have iron overload. And a lot of people have really low ferritin. And so just checking that could be really important. But those simple markers that I just said, do those and see where they're at. And most likely, if you have chronic symptoms, you're going to have issues. Another thing which is absolutely crazy is it's not a marker. It's just checking your blood pressure. A lot of our patients have healthy or normal blood pressure. But they have blood pressure that's like 100 over 60. They have, like, blood pressure of a dead person.
Host 2
Yeah, that's mine. Like last night, I did mine. Mine was 99 over 68.
Dr. Joshua Red
That's terrible, by the way.
Host 2
So I 99 over 68.
Dr. Joshua Red
So check this out, this presentation. If your blood pressure is too low, then you're not going to get oxygen and nutrients to the brain and distal tissues. So then, like, fatigue, depression, low motivation, just you not feeling yourself is really common. Low neurotransmitter function, brain inflammation, those are all common symptoms. So this patient goes to a doctor and like, I'm completely normal. They said I'm normal. We check their blood pressure. It's 90 over 60. That's severe. If we just increase blood pressure and do things to optimize perfusion, within one week, that person goes from suffering for the last 20 years to feeling better than they have in a long time just from that one change. Just improving blood perfusion.
Host 2
That's insane. I know who I'm going to see then. Okay. I've always been like, oh, that's low.
Host 3
That's great.
Dr. Joshua Red
At least it's not high and it's not great. Like, if we felt your hands, your feet, your brain, they're starving for glucose and oxygen.
Host 2
But what's it caused from?
Dr. Joshua Red
So here's another thing, too, which is interesting. If somebody typically has low blood pressure, they're going to have reactive hypoglycemia, they're going to have cortisol defects. And one of the most common things that will drive that is actually childhood trauma. Trauma, ironically, makes sense. The adrenal glands have been so exhausted they can't pump properly. And then you start to have low blood pressure, low cortisol, low blood sugar levels, and now we have a bunch of health issues. And then because the adrenal glands can't function like they should, then they steal away sex hormones and then end up causing a whole bunch of infertility type problems and issues there.
Julie (Hospice Nurse)
Yup.
Dr. Joshua Red
And it's really just derived by this one mechanism. So if you start to optimize it all, then all of a sudden you're feeling back to normal and your quality of life is significantly better. And a lot of these things we can turn around really stinking fast.
Host 2
So are all of your clinics in Utah?
Dr. Joshua Red
They're over the Western United States.
Host 2
Okay.
Dr. Joshua Red
But we see patients from all the world. There's about half our patients we've never seen before.
Host 2
Oh, no way.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah. If they have access to labs, then we Send them to where they're at, and they get their labs done, and then we do it over the phone.
Host 2
And I love this. Okay, now I'm deaf. Okay. See this podcast. Good things come from it.
Host 3
Just saying.
Host 2
So thyroid and weight. I feel like I hear so many women talking about it right now. Like, you have a woman who's eating clean, working out on meds, whatever, cannot seem to lose the weight. How much of this could be the thyroid?
Dr. Joshua Red
So they say almost 10% of females in our country have a thyroid problem.
Host 2
Wow.
Dr. Joshua Red
Hear me out.
Host 2
That's a lot.
Dr. Joshua Red
It's a lot. But hear me out here. Most of them, it's not a thyroid problem. Most of them, it's Hashimoto's, which is an autoimmune issue. So most of them have an immune issue, not really the thyroid. So most of the time, if all they do is just hyperfocus on the thyroid, we failed. You have to focus on the immune issue because the immune system is the one destroying the thyroid, causing low thyroid. And once we address that component, the patient's quality life is significantly better. So most people have a thyroid problem. Almost 10% of our country right now, and lots of males suffer with it too. But it's mainly more of a.
Host 2
And what is that caused from? Like, what are thyroid problems caused from? Could it be caused from stress? Is it environmental?
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah, so stress, our food quality, our environment, all those things play a role to where it turns on this genetic thing that then ends up causing our immune system to destroy the thyroid. There's pathogen mold. You know, when we're exposed to viral and bacteria and mold and things like that, it can also trigger this to onset as well. So there's a variety of things that will cause this, but it's just getting worse. I honestly feel like as. As, you know, in 20 years from now, if we keep going the direction we're going, we probably have the number one autoimmune clinic in the United States right now. If. If we continue to go the way we're going, I bet 30 to 40% of the population will have some form of autoimmune immune disease.
Host 2
Wow.
Dr. Joshua Red
And the number one, again, how is
Host 2
that possible in our country? What's supposed to be the greatest nation on earth?
Dr. Joshua Red
Like, I know. How is that so frustrating? It's getting turned around, though. Like, we're doing things to turn it around.
Host 2
So I truly do believe that. I think it's just so hard when you have big Pharma and you have insurance and you have all these things right like, it is very challenging. And I think that's been the most frustrating thing, is people who are begging for help, but just not getting 100%. And when it comes to functional medicine, doctors like, I'm sorry, but everyday middle America is like, functional medicine. What? Like, isn't that the same as a doctor? What. What is the best way to find a functional medicine doctor?
Dr. Joshua Red
You could, like, Google functional medicine, for example. And if somebody has. You're going to have functional medicine doctors. It's way more well known now than it was before. So you're going to have lots of doctors that have higher reviews and good reviews and have a good reputation. Those are doctors that I would look for.
Host 2
Right.
Dr. Joshua Red
What's crazy about your last question with low thyroid is most of the time, what we see with our patient population is they're not just suffering with thyroid issues. They're suffering with other forms of autoimmunity like celiac disease or rheumatoid arthritis or Ms. Or whatever that may be. It's now getting more rare to just have one autoimmune condition like Hashimoto's low thyroid. A lot of times we're seeing these patients have other autoimmune conditions and nobody realizes it. Your doctor doesn't realize it. So these patients are walking around with multiple autoimmune conditions, lots of symptoms, and really nothing's being done to the fire within their body.
Host 1
Wow.
Host 2
And with your clinics and the way that you work, you don't just want sick patients coming to you.
Host 1
Correct.
Host 2
Like, is, can this be something that's preventative to come to you and be like, hey, I don't know if something's wrong with me, I may be perfectly healthy, but can we do these tests?
Dr. Joshua Red
100%? Yeah. We have longevity clinics and maintenance clinics and things like that. That will help a lot of times, too, if we even have a sick patient that comes to our office. Our goal is to teach them and educate them and show them what to do and what not to do so that they're the expert in their own health, so that they know more about their condition than most doctors do. Right?
Host 2
Yeah. And in all, what you said, 17 years, you started this 17 years ago. In the times that you have had your clinic, is there one case in particular that sticks out to you of someone who just maybe you changed their life? They came to you and they're like, all these doctors told me I was fine, I was fine, I was fine. And you were able to completely turn things around for them.
Dr. Joshua Red
We're unique in a Sense that most of the patients that come to us have a horrible quality of life. Like, when I ask my patients, how many good days of a month do you have? Most of them will say like, 0 to 5. Their quality life is horrible. It impacts their marriage, their family relationships, their hobbies, what they can do. I mean, these are people who are really not functioning well. And it's absolutely heartbreaking. And we can get it to where they go from 0 to 5 good days a month to 25 good days a month. And then they know how to control it, they know how to manage it. So, like every day in our office is almost a whole new thing. Like our job, like, it can't get any better, right? Like, I just posted a reel on my Instagram of a girl named Bella and she had multiple autoimmune conditions. She had no clue. And she was a level 10 gymnast. She was like so dizzy and so fatigued and non functional. She was 17 and she was a level 10 gymnast. So, like when she'd get up on the beam, she was so dizzy, she couldn't like, do the things that she wanted to do. She was a high elite athlete and I heard that she was saving up to come to Red River.
Host 2
Stop.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah, it was absolutely heartbreaking. So we just gave her a free treatment plan and now she is killing it. She is so educated, she feels 100% better. Her quality life is way better. But this is like our everyday patient. This is who we see all the time, every day.
Host 2
And what does a treatment plan, what are the ranges that a trial treatment plan can cost someone?
Dr. Joshua Red
Well, for us, it really depends. It depends on how severe they are and what they do. For us, it could range anywhere from like $4,000 all the way to $8,000 depending on how many tests we have to do, how long it's going to be, what it's going to look like. But to give you an idea, let me just kind of do like a comparison. Okay, so let's say thyroid. We just talked about thyroid. Here is a patient in the conventional model that's going to a doctor. They get put on thyroid medication and then guess what else they get treated for. Or guess what else. Guess what the other treatments are.
Host 3
I don't know.
Dr. Joshua Red
Nothing.
Host 3
That's it.
Dr. Joshua Red
Thyroid medication. No diet, no lifestyle, none of that stuff. Now look at our treatment. We'll do extensive labs to identify every possible imbalance that will actually cause the thyroid to not function well and the mechanism driving it. So on top of that, now here's the conventional thyroid medication. Here's what we do now. We'll likely correct liver function, we'll correct methylation problems, we'll will correct detoxification, will correct poor absorption, poor digestion, intestinal permeability, brain inflammation, cortisol defects, hormonal imbalances, blood sugar imbalances, and then we'll look at their environment, their lifestyle, their diet, correct all that. Then we'll do like ozone therapy, peptide therapy, maybe lacta, maybe ldn, low dose naltrexone, if it works for that patient, Maybe stem cell IVs, maybe, you know, whatever it may be. So you look at, okay, here's your thyroid medication. And now we literally just did 20 different things to optimize the mechanism driving that problem. And now you see how complex it is. Then on top of that, you throw in all the education and, well, education is everything. It's huge.
Host 2
I feel like when you start to educate yourself, it's just like the old saying, when you know better, you do better. So when you have the education behind you, you're gonna think twice.
Dr. Joshua Red
Our goal is we'll see this patient 30 times over the course of a year. And our biggest goal is to teach you so that you literally are the expert in your own health. That's it.
Host 2
And I think that is the one thing that unfortunately, you know, big pharma is afraid of. Like, they don't want us to become our own advocate. They don't want us to become, you know, knowledgeable. They want us to just rely on these things. For me, there was a doctor I was seeing out in LA and I have endometriosis. And she is a very well known doctor. She doesn't accept it insurance. And I'm like, why is that? And she's like, I refuse to follow their protocol. She was like, you know, you have an opioid crisis amongst endometriosis patients. And that's because insurance tells you, all right, prescribe pain medicine first. And she's like, I don't want to do that. I want to get to the root of it before I do that.
Dr. Joshua Red
Insurance is one of the reasons why people are so sick. And it's because they're dictating what doctors can prescribe. They, they literally will tell a doctor because of this insurance. You have to prescribe this even if there's a medication that's better for a specific patient, or you can only see this patient for 15 minutes over the next three months. So just me doing an intake, it takes probably an hour. Me explaining and empowering you about your blood work it takes 45 minutes to an hour. So from a natural standpoint, we want to actually do a physical exam. We want to do a neurological exam. We want to explain your blood work. We want to empower you. We might see you 30 times over the course of a year. Insurance doesn't cover that. But what's cool is that in the long run, you're going to save way more money, Way more money, because your quality of life is significantly better. And then you're empowered. You have control of your condition when beforehand you didn't know what in the world was going on.
Host 2
Yeah. Holy cow. You are, like, talking to you is so easy, and you are so informative. It's one of the most amazing things in the entire world.
Dr. Joshua Red
Thank you. Seriously, sometimes I wonder. I probably shouldn't talk as much, but that's great. No, it works. Sometimes I'm sitting there, I'm like, I wonder if anyone understands what I'm actually talking about.
Host 2
Like, does anyone understand actually what I'm saying?
Ad Voice 3
No.
Host 2
I think you've done a really good job.
Dr. Joshua Red
Awesome.
Host 2
I think you've done a really good job. Okay, so you've built your practice on this idea that two of the biggest drivers of inflammation are things conventional medicine never asks about. Childhood trauma and environmental toxins. I'm going to give you a symptom that my audience deals with, and you have 60 seconds to tell us. Trauma, toxins, or both and why.
Host 3
Okay.
Host 2
All right. Six symptoms. Number one, chronic fatigue that doesn't go away no matter how much you sleep.
Dr. Joshua Red
Trauma and environment. And the reason. Let me tell you why. The reason why is because if the cortisol levels aren't functioning well, if the adrenal glands aren't functioning optimally, you're going to have chronic fatigue. Also, environment. If you had mold issues, if you had any type of viral or bacterial or heavy metals or plastics, you name it, you're gonna. You could have chronic fatigue as well.
Host 2
Number two, brain fog. The kind where you walk into a room and forget why.
Dr. Joshua Red
Both the same thing. It could be environment. It could be. It could be trauma as well.
Host 2
Okay. Weight. That won't budge no matter what you try.
Dr. Joshua Red
Unfortunately, both. Right. If your immune system is really inflamed from mold or from other environmental, you know, things, then that could be issue or trauma. Childhood trauma can unfortunately cause adrenal dysfunction. Blood sugar imbalances, intestinal issues, brain inflammation, you name it.
Host 2
Unexplained joint pain, knees, hips, lower back, both. See, that's the thing. I feel like everything goes back to Trauma, toxins. Like, both of them. Adult onset acne or eczema in your 30s.
Dr. Joshua Red
It could literally be both. And the reason why is because childhood drama will steal away reproductive hormones and cause all sorts of hormonal dysfunction. But then mold exposure, environmental toxins can cause that as well.
Host 2
Anxiety that's gotten worse the older you've gotten. Not better.
Dr. Joshua Red
Both.
Host 1
Okay.
Host 2
And of.
Dr. Joshua Red
Is this boring? I'm sorry.
Host 2
No, no. I think it goes back to what your whole mission.
Ad Voice 2
Right.
Host 2
And what you have tried to state is childhood trauma. Right. Like, childhood trauma already disregulates your entire body, your entire nervous system, and then the world that we live in, unfortunately, it's like my grandmother's like, oh, you're fine. You can eat that. I ate that. And I'm like, you do realize what you ate 60 years ago is not what we're eating now? And so I think it goes back to kind of your core mission, which is childhood trauma and environmental toxins and people, I feel like, so easily just brush off childhood trauma. Right. It's just like, oh, it was just trauma. Nothing I can do about it. But I always go back to the book, the body keeps the score.
Dr. Joshua Red
Yeah. And there's so much you can do if you have childhood trauma. There's so much that you can do to improve that and improve the physiological effects of childhood trauma. There's so much that you can do like. Like you said, you need a nervous system reset, but at the same time, there's also a lot of things that you can do from a physiological standpoint to help improve it as well.
Host 2
Amazing. So where can people find you?
Dr. Joshua Red
My social media is Dr. Joshred RJoshredd on YouTube, on Instagram, TikTok, all that as well. And then they can go to Red River Health and Wellness, or I have a clinic called Palma Vita Clinic.
Host 2
Okay.
Dr. Joshua Red
And then I have a supplement company called Palm Life Research, where we produce supplements as well.
Host 2
I love it. Amazing. Well, thank you so much for coming on.
Dr. Joshua Red
Thanks for having me.

That might be the best thing to ever happen to your priorities. I've spent years at the bedside and what I've learned is simple. People don't usually regret the big things. They regret the small things. They regret the things they didn't say. My new podcast, It's Okay, We're All Gonna Die is where we talk about the stuff everyone avoids. Death, dying, and all of those. We should probably talk about this someday. Conversations. So if you're looking for something that will help you check out It's Okay,

Episode: The Root Cause (Dr. Josh Redd)
Date: July 14, 2026
Host: Savannah Chrisley
Guest: Dr. Joshua Redd
In this insightful episode of Unlocked with Savannah Chrisley, Savannah sits down with Dr. Joshua Redd, founder of one of the largest functional medicine clinics in the US, renowned expert in chronic illness, autoimmunity, and root-cause medicine. Their discussion dives deep into what functional medicine means, the epidemic of chronic inflammation and autoimmunity (especially in women), the lasting health impact of childhood trauma and environmental toxins, why standard medicine often fails complex patients, and practical steps listeners can take for better health.
The conversation is candid, informative, and empowering—blending personal stories, clinical insights, and actionable advice for optimizing wellness and becoming your own health advocate.
“When you know better, you do better.” — (Savannah & Dr. Redd quoting Maya Angelou, paraphrased)
