By the time I hit my 50s, I'd learned a few things, like how family is precious, work can always wait. And 99% of people over 50 already have the virus that causes shingles. Not everyone at risk will develop it, but I did. The painful, blistering rash disrupted my life for weeks. Don't learn about your shingles. Risk the hard way. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist today. B
Isn't it great? Isn't it great to be alive for this? May it continue 250 years more of it. The President of the United States was in North Dakota yesterday for the opening of the Teddy Roosevelt Museum. There he was, accompanied by the Interior Secretary, Doug Burgum, and the festivities were awesome. He was out there with this, this great America. 250 freedom train that was adorned with all of this patriotic American flag bunting. He was being escorted by a bunch of guys dressed up as the Rough Riders. It was very cool to see. Take a look at some of this footage here. If you're watching with us, rumble.com Vince, that the rough Riders, American flags welcoming the president's arrival. The train. There's that bunting. I like that bun thing. I've got that bunting hanging on my house right now. There's the president stepping out of the back of that epic caboose. Really, no doubt about this guy. He loves the country. The Rough Riders on horseback escorting the president's motorcade. Then, of course, after this, the president paid a visit to Teddy Roosevelt's museum there that that's apparently getting open this weekend. And when visitors arrive on Sunday, I was here, Doug Burgum was discussing this. They will be able to hear the. The man in the arena speech. You know, the man in the arena speech. It's an epic, epic address that will be read by the President of the United States. This president, President Trump, his voice. They did a recording yesterday of the speech. So visitors to the museum are going to be able to hear it, which sounds really. I can't wait to hear it. I hope somebody puts it on the Internet at some point so I can hear it or if I get a chance to get out there to North Dakota and check it out. I'd love to. Teddy Roosevelt, very, very cool. President of the United States. And yes, you can have your hesitancies and well deserved about any association with the progressives and all of this, but to be clear about Teddy Roosevelt just as a man and about his character, the guy was just American, just purely distilled. He had such an adventurous spirit. He lived life to the fullest, loved the United States, worked really hard to safeguard it and protect it and, you know, served in combat. He was in the Spanish American War. He assembled the Rough Riders, men from every station in life. They weren't from any particular class or set. They were everywhere.
D
They were.
B
They were cowboys, they were Ivy Leaguers. They were everybody. He brought them together and he truly had an expansive view of what it means to be an American and a true love of country. Just like President Trump. Both men have survived assassination attempts. Both men were shot in those assassination attempts. And both men reacted to them like men. Like men. President Trump's case, standing up and saying, fight, fight, fight. In Teddy Roosevelt's case, enduring giving that speech anyway, saying that weak and vicious minds, of course, would turn their arms on him after all of the lies that had been told about him in the press. Sound familiar? So it's not a surprise at all that the president of the, this president of the United States would take some time to honor Teddy Roosevelt and his legacy, given the many similarities between these two men. Kind of fascinating and cool to see. So this is a, this is a great week to be an American as we celebrate the 250th birthday. The President, of course, will be doing that as well at Mount Rushmore. That'll be on Friday. And then he's got the big fireworks show, the biggest in world history, set to take place on Saturday in Washington, D.C. this audience will know, well that that story was broken exclusively right here on this show by Doug Burgum, which was, which was a real treat. So that was, so we have a place in American history now, just to be clear. And it's not just this fantastic American flagshirt I'm wearing today. It's, it's everything we've been able to do together. Love that. Let's get into some of the breaking news in the last 24 hours. The new York Times is in an all out panic right now. In an all out panic right now because people are being deported at levels that they didn't detect until now. It's very upsetting to the New York Times. Here's the piece. Immigrant arrests surge to 10,000 in five days as ice clamps down 10,000 people in just five days as ice now clamps down. Federal immigration officials have detained more than 10,000 people in the last five days. It's a major surge that has stemmed from a push within Immigration and Customs Enforcement to increase ice. Increased arrest rates. Agency leaders in recent days have ordered top ICE officials to focus more of their officers efforts on picking up immigrants that they want to deport, according to documents obtained by the New York Times. In interviews with federal officials, ICE officers have arrested people at check ins with immigration authorities during traffic stops and on the street. The push has apparently yielded results with recent arrest numbers roughly doubling from the 1,000 picked up each day. Earlier this year, ICE officials were told that the White House wanted an increase in arrests, according to three officials with knowledge of the conversations. One of the officials said that it was unclear how long the pace would continue, but that ICE officials have been told that 2,000 arrests a day was the new standard for enforcement. The surge has occurred without fanfare, without the fanfare of highly visible operations last year in which officials announced their intentions ahead of time to target cities including Chicago and Los Angeles and send officers pouring into the streets. Mark Wayne Mullen, the Homeland Security Secretary, pledged to mount a quieter enforcement campaign following the chaos of a month long operation in Minnesota where Federal officers killed two U.S. citizens. Yeah, two U.S. citizens who by the way, would be alive were it not for people like Tampon Tim Walls telling them that they needed to fight ICE insanity. They got themselves killed because of what Tim Walls and Keith Ellison and Jacob Fry and Hakeem Jeffries urged them to do, to fight against law enforcement, immigration enforcement in the United States. You heard the New York Times just cite that Mark Wayne Mullen had indicated that he wanted things to be quieter. When I heard that and when you heard that, no doubt you were on guard for the idea that maybe deportations would be going down, that they would try and limit the number of deportations or something because of the assassin's veto, that the rioters were causing the administration to back off on their mission. This story seems to indicate that that's not the case. That instead of backing off of the mission, they just decided that, well, we're not going to tell you about it, we're just going to do it quiet, workman like aggression. And if these numbers are true, then it means to some extent that this is paying off. This is a meaningful uptick. In fact, here's Mark Wayne Mullen yesterday giving us an actual update on a microphone about the number of deportations we're seeing a day. And it's not a mere 2,000, although 2,000 is the target. They're at 3,200. Watch this.
E
We're seeing our arrest numbers come up. We're seeing our deportation numbers continue to increase. Right now we're deporting on average over 3,000 individuals. Actually, the average has been for several weeks now, over 3200 individuals a day. 70% of those individuals we're deporting have outstanding criminal charges on them or they've already been charged with a felony. 70% of those individuals, 70% of the individuals that are men and women throughout DHS arrest being ICE, CBP or one of our other components, 70% of those individuals have pending felony charges or are current felons that shouldn't be on our streets. So when we go after the worst of the worst, which is exactly what we're doing, were saving lives. This is a statistic I like to put out. But 50% of the individuals killed in Fairfax County, Virginia are killed at the hand of, of, of an illegal.
B
70% of the individuals that we've been picking up have outstanding criminal charges or have already been charged with a felony. Do you understand? Just think about the numbers. He just said 3200 a day. So let me get out my handy. My handy dandy calculator here.
E
Ready? I'm going to do.
B
I'm not going to do that in my head. Let's take a look. Let's see here. Okay, so he said. What did he say? He said 3200 a day, 70% of them. So 0.7 times 3200.
E
Ready?
B
2240 people a day who have pending criminal charges against them or have already been charged with a felony. Have you noticed that the left will often say, insofar as it defends all of this illegal invasion of our country, very few of these people are actual violent criminals. Like, very few of them are.
A
Are.
B
Are committing additional crimes other than coming into our country illegally. And then you see a number like this, you're like, holy crap. Thousands upon thousands a day that have outstanding criminal charges or have already been convicted of a felony. We have a massive problem on our hands. 3,200 deportations a day, 70% of which have outstanding criminal charges or have already been charged with a felony. Yeah, no, there's. There's a big problem here, and we need to get them out. We need to get them out now. I will. I will say that 30200 a day is an encouraging number because remember Stephen Miller last May? For those of you who've been with me throughout all of it, you'll remember we dwelled on this at the time. Last May, Stephen Miller, the great Stephen Miller. Should we say it's Miller time? I think it's Miller time. I'm pretty sure we can say that. I love our Miller time Graphic. Here he is last May, saying we have to get to 3,000 a day. Watch.
C
Yes, well, under President Trump's leadership, we are looking to set a goal of a minimum of 3,000 arrests for ICE every day. And President Trump is going to keep pushing to get that number up higher each and every single day so we can get all of the Biden illegals that were flooded into our country for four years out of our country. And we can't take the risk of letting these Biden illegals roam around freely so the next American daughter can get raped, the next American kid can get murdered, the next American family can get splintered and torn apart by people that came into this country unchecked, uncontrolled, unvetted, uninvited by the American people.
B
Yeah, boy, aren't you glad Stephen Miller's on this mission, and Mark Wayne Mullen, apparently a great partner to him. You know, now I'm putting some of the pieces together, and the last, the last week is making a lot more sense in hindsight. This is often how these things go. Remember, Mark Wayne Mullen gets on television, puts his foot in his mouth about how Haitians could potentially stay in the United States of America. Stephen Miller came out very quickly. Miller, who has a lot of trust among people like us, he's built it up, a deep well of trust with Americans who love their country. And he came out, he goes, hey, everybody, go easy on Mark Wayne Mullen. He was just stating the law. And we're like, okay, all right, I'll trust you on that. And look, look, look at the partnership that these guys have. So meanwhile, in the background, Markway Mullen is deporting 3200 people a day. That's exceeding the target that Stephen Miller set, which means that Miller recognizes that Marquin Mullen is a good partner to him right now. This is great news. This is very good news. And it is leading to panic on the left. We didn't know this was happening. We wanted to plan our riots. Yeah, don't worry about it. We'll handle this. You just, you just stay home in your basement. We're not gonna, we're not gonna play that anymore. Just, just amazing, amazing news. Now, it doesn't mean that the left isn't trying to devise other strategies to prevent deportations. In fact, the story I'm about to share with you is utterly horrifying, truly horrifying. I was, you know, I'm not shocked, but I am appalled by what I will share with you here in a moment. I was reading the news last night, prepping. I was actually sitting on my couch reading this, and my hand had to cover my mouth. And I told my wife. I was like, I don't even know if I can describe this to you, but it is horrifying in a moment what Tampon Tim Walls is doing to try and prevent deportations in Minnesota. He should be, as of today, he should resign in disgrace as governor of Minnesota. More ahead on this edition. Events. As always, thanks for being with us. Tampon Tim Walls just pardoned an illegal alien who repeatedly raped a 10 year old girl in order to prevent this illegal alien from being deported. Already the story is enraging, but I'm going to share with you some of the details here. And just so you know, this is about to become very graphic unfortunately. But I think it's important that people hear what the Democrats are doing to our country, what the stakes are and how awful this is. Bill Malusian with a summary. DHS is accusing Minnesota Governor Tim Walls of trying to shield a Laotian illegal alien from Laos pedophile from being deported after Walls pardoned him for a 2006 conviction in which he repeatedly raped a 10 year old girl in Minnesot. DHS says Tao Liu Vong was issued a deportation order immediately after that conviction and was set to be imminently deported. But the pardon has now removed his deportable offenses and given him a clean record which may thwart his removal and give him an avenue to fight deportation. Bill warns that these are graphic details below. According to Vong's conviction documents from the state of Minnesota, in 2004 he repeatedly had penetrative sex with the 10 year old girl on multiple occasions and forced oral sex upon her in which he ejaculated her into her mouth. He told police, quote, I made a mistake, but this is a minor thing. It's a cultural thing to marry and have sex with girls as young as 12. He also said the child should be arrested and she was also at fault. Vong ultimately took a plea deal to plead guilty to the offense of first degree criminal sexual conduct. New York Times reports he served no prison time as a part of the deal. Vong was pardoned for the offense last month by the Minnesota Board of Pardons. That board is made up of the Minnesota Governor Tim Walls, the Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and the Chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. All pardons must be approved by the Minnesota Governor. DHS is now blasting the decision governor Tim Walz's decision to pardon an illegal alien convicted child rapist so he can remain in our country is disgusting, said acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bees. These are the criminal illegal aliens he and his Minnesota sanctuary politicians are protecting. 2. Lu Bong lost his legal status for following his conviction for repeatedly sexually assaulting a 10 year old girl. Following the conviction, he was placed in removal proceedings and issued a final order of removal by a judge. This pardon will take away this child rapist's qualifying convictions that made him removable from the United States Bill includes

mug shot or a photo of this vile creature. He also includes some of the original police documentation describing the horrors of these crimes. I'll spare you more details, but they're equally and extensively horrific to what I just shared with you. And this is who Tim Walls is freaking protecting. It's not the people of Minnesota. It's not the people of the United States of America. He's working to actively undermine the American people and their desire to restore order to their country, including for men who rape little girls. That's who Tim Walls is protecting. And this I looked at the New York Times coverage of this and they include a detail in here that I think is really important for your understanding. They say that this detail that if you are deportable, it adds to the weight of your ability to get a pardon in the state of Minnesota, they say. Mr. Walls and other members of the Minnesota Pardon Board have stressed that the threat of removal is one factor among many that they consider and they've rejected. Others seeking relief from deportation, others how bad, how bad does the crime need to be to avoid a pardon because you're letting 10 rapists, adult rapists of 10 year old girls go because you're trying to avoid deportation. That's a factor.

B
this is, it's so you know, we're at a level here in the United States of America where we are served so many scandals of this nature that you unfortunately kind of become numb to them because. Because this behavior is, in a way, so predictable and expected. Unfortunately, this is why I say it's not shocking, but it is appalling. But, boy, it is appalling. And we're live on Match day as Doug reaches for a Buffalo wing. He's got it. Oh, and he's gone for a can of Pepsi, too. What a finish. There's no doubt about it. It just tastes better. Match days deserve Pepsi. The Democrats are actively seeking to undermine our sovereignty to the point that they're trying to allow rapists to stay in the country. And if the American people do not understand what the stakes are, God willing, a story like this will help them understand it. Tim Walls should not be the governor of any state. Tim Walls, if the justice system functions, should probably be in jail for his active subversion of attempts to restore order to our country, conspiring with Keith Ellison to protect fraud in the state of Minnesota. Something needs to be done. Something needs to be done about this, and this is really just a deeply upsetting story. I'm sorry I have to bring this to you as we head into Independence Day, but this is just one of those stories I saw. And I said, the audience needs to know about this, and we need to know that our cause is righteous, that getting the. The bad guys out of the country, getting illegals out of our country, is not only something on the to do list, it's at the top of that list. Thank you to Mark Wayne Mullen for accelerating these deportations. It's good news today because I was. I actually saw these in reverse order. I saw this Tim Wall story first, and I was like, oh, my God, I can't even believe what's going on in Minnesota. And then, then I saw the encouraging news that DHS is all over deporting people. It has to happen. And to be clear, by the way, this guy, his status in our country, pretty sure that's really up to the Trump administration. So this deportation game that they're playing, whatever this is, we gave him a pardon, so now you can't deport him. Bull. Guy's not an American citizen. Get him the hell out of our country. I hope the Trump administration bangs down whatever door he's hiding behind. It grabs him and trebuchets him right out of the country. Because it has to happen. It has to. All right, let me one. One more story on illegal aliens for you, and then we'll get to talking about our great Declaration of Independence with our great guest coming up in just a moment. But here's another one. You know, the left often tells you that there's no illegal aliens voting in our elections. Yeah, that's funny because we just got another update on that subject. Exclusive. DOJ Arrests Illegal Alien for Voting in Federal Election it happened again. The great Reagan Reese, our White House correspondent, sharing this detail today, federal authorities have arrested and charged yet another illegal alien in New Jersey with voting in a federal election, the Daily Caller has learned. Marion Chariton, a 62 year old from Slovakia, was charged with illegally voting in a federal election as well as making false statements while applying for US Citizenship. According to information shared with the Daily Caller, Sheridan allegedly registered to vote in New Jersey, falsely stated that he was a US Citizen when doing so. He then went on to vote in the 2022 midterm elections. According to the information provided to the Daily Caller, Chariton also applied for US Citizenship and allegedly claimed he never voted in a federal election. Lied about it. Chariton never obtained citizenship as his voting history was discovered during the application process and he was denied, an official told the Daily Caller. So this is just the latest in a string of these arrests. The Justice Department has actually done this a bunch. In May, four green card holders living in New Jersey were separately charged with illegally voting in federal elections and falsely claiming they never did such a thing while applying for US Citizenship. So that just keeps happening. That thing they say never happens, just keeps happening. In case you were wondering, yeah, let's get them out of the country, let's do that and let's fix our elections. And let's in the process, shall we get the Save America Act? Wouldn't that be wonderful? I think that'd be absolutely wonderful. All right, more in a moment on the greatness of our country and why understanding it requires requires understanding the Declaration of Independence. It's a very important story. We'll talk about it with our great guest next. But but first I want to thank one of our fine sponsors. That's helixsleep.com Vince helixsleep.com Vince all right, very happy to have joining us right now, the legendary Dr. Matt Spalding is here. He's with the great Hillsdale College and he's also the author of this phenomenal book, the Making of the American Mind, the story of our declaration of independence. Dr. Matt Spalding, nice to see you this Morning and happy birthday, America.
F
It is great to see you, Vince. Happy Independence Day, July 2nd. This was the day of the vote. Indeed it was. This morning, a few hours from now, the actual vote for independence. So yes, happy Independence Day.
B
Do you think we wrongly mark July 4th as Independence Day as a result of that history?
F
No, no, no, not at all. I think the Declaration, which is the formal statement of that independence, completes the argument. John Adams famously wrote a letter that said that July 2nd will be celebrated with fireworks and that'll be the date. But I think that this is something that's really great about America. We aren't merely revolutionary like the French Revolution. Yes, we did fight a revolution, but then we said what we thought. We put our ideas down on a piece of paper, the Declaration of Independence. And what the Declaration does is not just declare our independence, but announce our new nation. And so the Declaration is really the birthday of America. So July 4th is the right day to celebrate, but we just celebrate on July 2nd as well. Why not 2.
B
I love that. So one of the things I love about your book, I'm not yet done it, but I've begun reading it and I really. So I'm not going to lie to you about. Oh, I read the whole book and I love every letter. No, I. But I have been reading it, I've really been enjoying it and I enjoy your mind, I enjoy the way you write and it's, the prose is beautiful, it's great. But one of the things I took away immediately, which I think is one of the core points of the book, is that to understand what it means to be American is to read the Declaration of Independence. That the core thought of the American mind is the Declaration of Independence and every other little thought we have about our country, every sincere feeling. And every, every time you, a tear comes to your eye listening to the national anthem, the Star Spangled Banner, all of those other subsidiary thoughts spill out of that Declaration of Independence. Tell me about this.
F
No, I think that's right, I turn out a little bit. I think one starts off with some instinctive sense of patriotism that you get from your family and your community and watching a parade with the flag. But what happens in America is it has to be reflective. To be a self governing republic means you got to think about and deliberate about being a citizen and what all that means. So it is the, does come back to the Declaration of Independence. But here I'd make a, you know, a general perception is that, well, the Declaration is what Jefferson said. Therefore Jefferson gave us our mind that's not the case at all. Jefferson called it an expression of the American mind, which is where I get my book title, the Making of the American Mind. And Jefferson, beautifully wonderful writer, very gifted writer, captured that American mind which had been building for decades, especially the immediate decade before 76.
B
Yes.
F
And then they've been debating this for two years. And recall George Washington been president, excuse me, had been commander in chief of the Army. He's at war for a whole year before they get to the Declaration of Independence. So that's the American mind. Jefferson was capturing that American mind, and I think he did it brilliantly. And I think that is still the American mind. We still debate the Declaration, we still talk about the Declaration, we still read the Declaration. And it's what makes America different to this day. It's why people come here. It's why people flock to America, which is why people look to America when they're being persecuted. It's ultimately why, even though we're not a perfect nation, we have all sorts of flaws because we're imperfect people. We are a great nation, perhaps the greatest, because of the Declaration. It's what we aspire to, our principles. And those are true principles, not just merely Jefferson's mind that he made up, but he captured this, and that's what we remain dedicated to. And so it is the Declaration that really defines America, what it means to be an American citizen.
B
The modern left has a deep resentment for the Declaration of Independence, in particular, because it acknowledges a higher power immediately. It says that our rights are endowed to us by our Creator. Can you talk about how important that was to the Declaration of Independence?
F
Very much so, indeed. There are two great moorings, if you will, of the Declaration of Independence. It talks about the laws of nature and of nature's God, and then goes on to talk about the divine God four other times. So what they did is they grounded the Declaration not only in what we might call the Greek and Roman rational classical tradition of natural law, but they also grounded it in this other source of truth, which is general revelation, and then a revelation that becomes this providential God and a God that creates man in particular and endows man with his rights. Modern liberalism, especially postmodernism, can't stand for any quote, unquote, truth claims, whether they're rational truth claims or divine truth claims. The Declaration does both. So it's doubly bad from their point of view, and we got to ignore that. So they undermine both of those claims, all of those claims, which really does undermine the whole basis of what America, historically and intellectually and morally has always defined itself as. Our rights do not come from government. They don't come from the Supreme Court. They don't come from the kind of a slow evolution of changes of opinions in the numbers emanations of the Constitution. They are God given and they're evident in the very nature of man, which you understand be a created man or you can understand to be the man we observe over time in the sense of, say, Aristotle or Cicero. So it's that deep mooring, that modern progressivism, especially this postmodernism, which believes in nothing, it's all it is, is subjective will. They can't stand either of those moorings. And those things define the Declaration of Independence.
B
One of the other things that really stands out to me about the Declaration is how metal it is, how hardcore it is. It's nothing like modern political speec. Modern political speech is designed to like, try and sound flowery and agreeable to all people who hear it. That's not what the Declaration is at all. It's like an endless list of grievances against the Crown. And we're going to fight back against you, and we're going to do it by pledging our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor. It goes so hard in the pain and it just makes me think like, boy, I wish people could be as honest as the Declaration was.
F
No, absolutely. This is one of the things I think sometimes we've thought of. The Declaration in the Constitution many ways too, is kind of just documents. They are written documents about our political principles and they've forgotten the story. The story is powerful. Not only is that declaration manly, to be perfectly honest, in terms of what they're laying out. I mean, think about what they're doing, events. They are announcing that they're going to go to war against the most powerful nation in the world. And these are the things we believe and we're willing to die for them. That's something we don't see nowadays very often. And here's another little quirk of a providential, interesting aspect of history. On July 2nd today, 250 years ago today, not only this morning are they going to have the second vote, the final vote for independence till July 2, when famously, Cesar Rodney arrives last moment. But also on July 2, the British Washington's been reporting they're moving their ships from Halifax down the East Coast. On July 2, they're landing troops on Staten Island. So it's in the middle of all this, I always tell my students, in the middle of all this, they're going to war. They're about to be invaded by the largest naval invasion prior to World War II. And in the middle of that, here's what they said. We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, all those grievances, and we're willing to die for it. That's what I call great. That's great political rhetoric of the highest caliber. We don't see that anymore. And that's something we can dedicate ourselves to, that kind of deep belief, to principles that are understood to be true. Simply, if we can't dedicate ourselves to that, what are we going to dedicate ourselves to? I just don't see much, but much greater than that to be the centerpiece of a nation.
B
So you've used the word providential a couple times and you just were describing how against all odds we decided we're going to fight against the most powerful military on planet Earth.
F
Yes.
B
To found our nation. Do you find in the American Founding proof of God? Do you think it proves God's existence? The success of the American Founding?
F
The success of the American Founding, perhaps. I think it's. It shows a providential pattern. But going back to your previous question, I do think the American Founding, the Declaration in particular, relies upon, indeed actually lays out a case for God. Now, important clarification here, Vince. It's not sectarian. It's not Protestant or Catholic or Congregationalist or Puritan. They wanted to avoid those civil wars in England which led to persecution. They believed very strongly in religious liberty. So it's non particular. It's a general case for God, for the divine. There's a profound theology of the Declaration of Independence, and I don't think you can read it without that theology. There's clearly a notion that man is in an ordered universe. Man was created, man was endowed by this God, this God is providential, and this God is also the supreme judge of the world. I don't see how you can read that and not see a very, very powerful theology. It's not necessarily New Testament, it's more Old Testament in many ways, but it's clearly a profound sense of God. And given even the fact that Jefferson is quirky in his ways and so is Ben Franklin, but the rest of them, almost to a man, were mainstream religious. And the notion that they could write that and not think that was the God to whom they prayed or that that was the God to whom Washington's army prayed every day is amazingly difficult, if not impossible to believe. And Washington clearly thought there Was providence role in the American Revolution on many occasions and writes about it at great length.
B
How important was it to the Founders that we keep this revolutionary spirit alive going into the centuries? So how do we hand this down? And was that an important facet to their thinking?
F
Oh, absolutely. I mean, look, what is the great difficulty of free government, of self government, of self governing citizens? This is the problem, this is the challenge. This is why self government regimes never last. The Americans had a different idea. They thought it could, which is why they emphasized education at great length on many occasions. But education for the Founders always included a sense of civic education, which was not just kind of this abstract technical who votes when Kind of thing. It was a deep, patriotic education. You should learn your history, you should learn about these great and noble deeds, and you should learn about these principles, because this is the thing that makes America worth loving. And so we have to know it, we have to have a reflective sense of it. But ultimately it's a patriotism. And in a free government, which you don't live by the dictates of the ruler and you're not instructed to do things, you still have the freedom to vote, to do things, to pursue happiness, to be free. It's gotta be something that we consciously think about and do in our homes, with our families, our schools, and at the national level through great rhetoric and speaking, through laws, but also speeches and things like that. So the founders thought that was incredibly important. And to a man, all thought that we couldn't survive if that was lost. And worried about that question, because this is the question historically, can Republican government continue to exist? Can America continue to exist? I think they would be amazed about how well we've done. I think they'd be worried about how we're going to maintain it. And we need to recover it, recover that sense. And I'm hoping this unique moment, this day, these few days in the next 11 years, which is going to be the 250th anniversary of the Constitution, is going to be a period which this country recovers that idea and those understandings and truths behind this country we all love.
B
Dr. Spalding, I know that you are. You're undertaking efforts to help tell our story better because the story has been poorly told by many of the institutions who are tasked with telling it, including. I know you've been working, just kind of looking at the Smithsonian and the way the stories are told at the museum. Can you tell us something about your efforts?
F
A little bit. It's kind of ongoing. I've been involved in Freedom 250 generally, and the celebrations and. And all that. But I've also been looking around at how the government teaches these things. Going back to your previous question, and the Smithsonian is very problematic. And here, particularly the Museum of American History, there's no narrative. It doesn't tell someone the story. Someone comes there, they're not gonna learn about America. They learn all the things you would expect in a postmodern world, about slavery, about all the bad parts, about who couldn't vote and how the country really wasn't founded, it wasn't settled, it was unsettled. But it all has to do with people, not the American founders. So it's this profound ideological trip to kind of get around all the things that would be a normal consensus, old liberal history of America. So I find it very problematic that the leading museum funded by Congress of the American government, telling the history, American history, doesn't actually tell American history.
B
Well, that's an act of subversion. I mean, that's directly contrary to what you just described about what the Founders vision was.
F
Passing down the fact that our country is doing that and funding it on a regular basis. I mean, it really is teaching an ideology, teaching one to question that history. Well, first of all, not to learn the history, but question these ideas and undermine them. It's what, in this postmodern world we've been talking about for years now, as it's expanding, this is what we would expect to see. But to see it at the National Museum of American History in the Smithsonian, I find just heartbreaking, but also extremely problematic. And I'm hoping the powers that be, the. The people that oversee the Smithsonian, the government, the Congress, the President, really think about doing something about it. It's very problematic, and we should not be teaching this, especially now at our 250th anniversary.
B
Yeah. How could a museum that's dedicated to this great nation lead people to have a lower view of the country when they're leaving the exits? Like, you're walking out of the museum and you have a lower view of the country than when you came into it.
F
Well, but if you look at their documents, their internal documents and planning documents, they. That seems to be their plan. They wanted to problematize the American history. They want to draw attention to its flaws, because that's how, in their point of view, you create this civic mindedness. But it really does undermine any sense of patriotism, any sense of appreciation, any sense of even just knowing the basic history. The great history about America is not that we were. We are perfect we're flawed. We have all sorts of things. History is messy. The great thing about America's history is Americans almost always overcome them. Sometimes it takes a little more time than others. But in the case of slavery, we fought a civil war. It doesn't tell that story. It doesn't show that somehow these principles at the beginning became this great nation. And this great nation, though imperfect, has done great things more than any other country in the world. There's no sense of that at all. It really undermines all of that. And so a student that goes there, a family that goes there, but a foreigner goes there, someone who's visiting America goes there. You get a very muddled and negative view of this country. And I see no reason why you would be proud to be an American or even being interested in being American after going to that history museum.
B
Well, what a betrayal. I mean, if you want a real understanding, in my view, of our nation's flaws and the ways we overcame, I mean, turn to Frederick Douglass, turn to Harriet Tubman, turn to Booker T. Washington, and actually read their words and what they actually thought. And you won't leave with a low regard for America's history. You will lead. You will. You'll leave with a very high regard for it. Frederick Douglass was constantly calling on Americans to live up to the ideals of our founding. And so if. If you walk away from an American history museum and you think less of the United States, you are dishonoring Frederick Douglass's interpretation of our country.
F
Oh, absolutely. But you're also dishonoring Abraham Lincoln and the Founders themselves. I mean, one thing, one obligation we have. If you're teaching history, is we obligation as best we can to understand it as they understood it? And when you read their stuff. This is why I wrote my book and why Hillsdale teaches what it teaches. If you read good history and read what they actually said, it's a noble story. It's imperfect. It overcomes tragedy and mistakes, but, gosh, it's noble. It's great, and there's a certain glory to it. I mean, this country has done more for the cause of liberty than any country in the world.
B
Yes.
F
Why do people look to us? Why do people come here constantly? Why do they want to get here? We're blessed to be in this great country, and we should think about that on a day like today and the next couple of days, we should relearn that history. But, gosh, we should just think about what this country means in the middle of the 18th century, when the world is dominated by four and monarchy and aristocracy and despotism. We announced a country that was going to be based on human freedom and human equality, based on the consent of the governed. And by gosh, we've done that. We have done that in spades. And become the greatest and most powerful country in the world. And that's not something to be celebrated at our own museum of American history. I just don't understand it. And that's got to be corrected.
B
God bless you. And I. And I know you're in the fight to do that. Thank you very much. Dr. Matt Spalding. The book is the Making of the American Mind. If you've enjoyed a single sentence of what Dr. Spaulding just shared with us, you will have many sentences of his wisdom right here. It's so good. The book is so good. Dr. Spalding. Thank you. And happy Independence Day.
F
Happy July 4th. God bless America.
B
God bless America. Great to see you, sir. There he is, Matt Spaulding. And just. It is what it is, a great country. And, you know, there's the emotional side of me. I'm always like. I don't know about you, but there's a. There's a part of me I see the. I see the American flag, put my hand over my heart. Take your. Take your ball cap off when the. The Star Spangled Banner starts playing. You know, watching. I've. I've been to, you know, military funerals, flag drape, coffins. I just. Every time there's a part of my mind that activates that I feel like, no, that very. Gets very little action otherwise. And you just, like, you well up with emotional pride and country. And it's a wonderful feeling. And I think it's important to also activate the other parts of your brain that animate this, that. That inform why you're having that emotional response. And that's found in the Declaration of Independence. You know, that's the American mind. That's what Dr. Spalding is talking about. And so I'm very grateful that he wrote a great book on the subject. And. And, you know, I. Very fitting for us to mark the 250th anniversary of the country with one of the leading thinkers in our country on this subject. So thank you to him again for that. Let's see here. There's a couple of other quick elements for you I want to share with you today before we head off into a great Independence Day weekend.
G
The.
B
The effort to, you know, figure out who is American and how quickly that happens continues to be underway. Because, look, this birthright citizenship decision from the Supreme Court earlier this week was just an absolute dumpster fire. Total dumpster fire. This idea that you could just hand out citizenship willy nilly. Oh, but it's been happening like this for a century. Yeah, it shouldn't be happening. It's insane. The drafters of the 14th Amendment were explicit that this was not supposed to be for aliens who were just here on a temporary basis. And if you're here illegally, by definition you're here temporarily. So because once we find you, we deport you, you shouldn't be here. So this is insanity. And you know, it wasn't that long ago that everybody knew it was crazy. In fact, CNN knew it was crazy. Back in 2015, CNN ran a full blown segment on women who were selling their wombs to China to give Chinese people American citizen babies. The whole thing was so crazy it formed a CNN segment. This brought to us by the great Maze Moore who resurfaced this segment this week. Take a look. Cut three. Watch.
D
I know it's not my baby.
G
The child growing inside Audra Anderson will be going to parents in China who are the future parents of this child you're carrying right now.
D
A Chinese gay couple. And they are the most wonderful people that I know. They are loving and caring and if I didn't think that, I wouldn't have given them two wonderful children.
G
Anderson's surrogate pregnancy is not unusual. A growing number of women in the US are becoming surrogates for wealthy Chinese couples. Agencies like West Coast Surrogacy in Irvine, California are seeing a large influx of customers from overseas. In fact, 40% of their clients are from China.
D
For one, their child will be a US citizen. I'm sure that has some, some draw to it.
G
There are other American companies trying to get in on this growing surrogacy industry. Unlike international adoption, there are very few rules governing international surrogacy. Here in a small desert town in Southern California, Audra Anderson says she's already considering carrying a third surrogate child that she can earn from 35 to $45,000 for each baby.
B
This should be totally illegal. What a scam. What a complete scam. Just handing out American citizenship to ChiComs. Yeah, that's the, that's the American dream right there. Can sell your womb. How disgusting. On any number of levels. Disgusting. Uh, yeah, so that's, that's that CNN knew it. You know, Harry Reid knew back in 1993 that this was a problem. He proposed legislation that's now being resurfaced by Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno. Just to stop all of this. But now they won't admit any of this. The left won't. Because this is a part of their scam to destroy the country. That's that. They're all in on destruction. They're not interested in people remembering the purpose of the American founding or maintaining any sort of continuity or passing down things to your children. Instead, it's a full blown open border, open womb, free for all to claim American citizenship. Thanks, lefties. Trying to wreck the country that way. And imagine how many wombs have been sold out since 2015. That was 11 years ago to just give a bunch of random foreign nationals American citizenship. Yeah, no, that's. That's insane. What a total abuse of our country and its populace. The President's trying to fix it. He promised yesterday. He goes, I'm going to fix this thing. We're going to fix this garbage around birthright citizenship.
E
Take a look.
B
Here's the President cut four.
H
It was the most important. And we want some mothers too. It was the most important decision of all of them, I think. But we'll take care of the birthright citizenship because that was. That was not meant for rich people from other countries. That was meant for. Actually, it was meant for the babies of slaves. If you look at it, it was a month after the Civil War ended that it went through. That's because it was meant for the babies of slaves. It wasn't meant for rich people from China. It was. They came over in Gulf streams. It was meant for the babies of slaves. So I believe. No, I know they got it wrong, but that's okay because they gave us something that nobody thought, but they also gave us something thing in one of the sessions a year ago was called merit. Our country now is based again on merit.
B
On merit. Yeah. The President says he's going to fix this. They're already focusing on doubling down and going after anybody who's involved in birth tourism. The Justice Department has made this a priority this week. They said, put everything else to the side. We're going to stop this from happening. Talk about an attack on Americans. This is straight up attack on American sovereignty. American citizens are the sovereigns. It's not, you know, we got rid of the king. We did that 250 years ago, that big declaration of Independence. We got rid of the king. You're the sovereign. American citizens are the sovereign. And we're not going to devalue our currency. We're just going to hand it out to random people who steal it from us. No, it's a privilege to be an American and we need to safeguard what that means. The President of the United States is working on that. God bless you for being here with me. I'm very appreciative of this audience. Just an America loving audience from all across the fruited plain. Every day is such a joy to be with you again. We've got the day off tomorrow. Host: Vince Coglianese
Date: July 2, 2026
Episode: 323
Main Guest: Dr. Matt Spalding (Hillsdale College)
This episode is an energetic pre-Independence Day edition of VINCE, marked by celebration of America’s 250th birthday, critical analysis of recent developments in immigration enforcement, and an in-depth conversation about the Declaration of Independence with Hillsdale College's Dr. Matt Spalding. Vince celebrates America’s heritage while breaking down controversial news about surging deportations and sovereignty, and turns a critical lens toward the progressive retelling of American history.
[04:27–07:13]
“To be clear about Teddy Roosevelt just as a man and about his character, the guy was just American, just purely distilled. He had such an adventurous spirit. He lived life to the fullest, loved the United States, worked really hard to safeguard it.” – Vince, [07:14]
[07:13–16:04]
“3,200 deportations a day, 70% of which have outstanding criminal charges or have already been charged with a felony. Yeah, no, there’s a big problem here, and we need to get them out.” – Vince, [14:13]
"Now, in the background, Markwayne Mullin is deporting 3,200 people a day. That’s exceeding the target Stephen Miller set, which means Miller recognizes Mullin is a good partner right now." – Vince, [16:04]
[19:55–24:19]
“Tim Walz should not be the governor of any state…if the justice system functions, should probably be in jail for his active subversion of attempts to restore order to our country.” – Vince, [24:23]

“[Birthright citizenship] was not meant for rich people from other countries…It was meant for the babies of slaves.” – President Trump, [56:14]
The episode threads together fiery patriotism, deep concern about border security and national identity, and a plea to recapture a robust, honest telling of the American founding. Vince’s tone is fervently pro-American, critical of progressivism, and committed to reminding listeners of the principles and stories that he believes made—and can keep—America great.
