Julie Foudy
Let's party.
Billie Jean King
Bowdy's got the racket.
Abby Wambach
Billy, I'm in a dress.
Julie Foudy
Yeah, show the pictures.
Abby Wambach
Show I'm in a tennis dress.
Billie Jean King
Birthday party.
Julie Foudy
Attention. The party is about to commence. Welcome to the party. What's up, party people? I'm Julie Foudy.
Abby Wambach
And I'm Abby Wambach.
Julie Foudy

We'll see you at the Ally House and we can't wait to celebrate with you, Ally. Do it right. Okay, party people, we have a very special episode for you today. I don't know.
Abby Wambach
I'm so excited.
Julie Foudy
I know I'm whispering because it's kind of a surprise. Kinger has no idea about all of this, which is so fun. Not kind of a surprise. A full surprise.
Abby Wambach
It's a full on.
Julie Foudy
Yeah, it's a BJK birthday bash. It's her birthday on Saturday, so in just a few days. And we thought, well, we have to celebrate her 82nd trip around the sun. Right? So here we are.
Abby Wambach
It's true. But Jules, before we bring in Billie Jean King for this celebration, we have to take a moment with just the party people. Because even know the Kinger never likes to hear us gush about her.
Julie Foudy
No.
Abby Wambach
And some of you know her Impact inside and out. Right. And others might only know bits and pieces. So we thought we'd take a second to talk about all of the ways the world, not just women's sports folks would look completely different if Billie Jean King hadn't been here to change it.
Julie Foudy
Right. Know your history, as Kinger would say. So we considered doing 82 ways that Kinger has changed the world. But in the interest of time, we decided that you could just go 8 plus 2 instead of 82 and you can do the 10 ways that Kinger changed the world. So here are the top 10 ways Billie Jean King has helped change the world. Number one. She showed us the power of a unified women's sports movement. So rewind to 1970. Billy was the central force. And forming the original nine, she and eight other female tennis players, they all signed $1 contracts to break away from the existing tennis establishment to form gutsy. Their own professional circuit circuit which was the birth of women's professional tennis as we know it today. Three years later, in 1973, she founded the Women's Tennis association, the WTA. The first athlete led professional league for women. So without those two moments, ABS the idea that women athletes could organize and speak with one collective voice might not exist. Thank you, Kinger.
Abby Wambach
It feels. It feels wrong to even go to number two because that is such an important moment. You know what I mean? Yeah. Okay. But we in. In the interest of time, number two. The Kinger taught us, Jules, to never settle for the crumbs.
Julie Foudy
Yeah.
Abby Wambach
Before Billy, women earned a fraction of men's prize money. Okay. After the win, winning the 1972 US Open where the male winner made 25, 000 and Billie Jean King earned 10. She said the women would not return next year until they were paid equally with the men. Forcing. Yeah. This is, by the way, in 1972. Forcing. Yeah. The U.S. open to become the first major to offer equal prize money in 1970. 73. And as we know, the Kinger has counseled countless athletes across many sports and generations to unite under one vision. To get clear on what they deserved. Yeah. What they should demand and never settle for less.
Julie Foudy
Yep. Word number three. The Kinger showed millions of girls and women what they were capable of achieving. So on September 20, 1973, 90 million people watched Billie Jean King defeat Bobby Riggs under the lights of the Houston Astrodome. It was called the Battle of the sexes. You may have seen the movie if you're too young to be alive when it happened. I was 2. Abby wasn't born young. Girls saw her walk into that arena carrying the weight of every stereotype and walk out having rewritten what's actually possible. And the cool thing about that night is it didn't just inspire athletes, it inspired futures. That's what I love about that night.
Abby Wambach
It's very difficult to keep moving on from these without going into much debate and discussion, but we have to. Number four. The Kinger showed the world what women's sports could be. The battle of the sexist wasn't theater. It was transformation, y'. All. It proved that women's sports could draw ratings. It proved that women's sports could fill arenas and stand on equal footing with men's events. Without that proof, the massive audiences for women's soccer, basketball, volleyball, rugby, cricket, it just might not have ever happened and ever emerged without proving it all the way back then. Yeah.
Julie Foudy
Number five. The Kinger taught us that girls who play become girls who lead. And this one is near and dear to me. The Kinger founded the Women's Sports foundation in 1974 with a $5,000 check. So she basically won this check for outstanding Female Athlete of the year, and instead of depos and in her bank, she says, let's go. Found a huge foundation called the Women's Sports Foundation. So that initial investment has now grown into over $100 million given to help girls and women in sports. And one of its early beneficiaries, you might recognize the name Jackie Joyner Kersey. She went on to become one of the greatest track and field athletes in history. She later founded her own youth center to pass on that same opportunity.
Abby Wambach
Number six. The Kinger shows us daily that athlete activism is part of our very fiber. Billy risked everything to stand for gender equity, gender equality, and later, as one of the first openly gay athletes for the LGBTQ + rights. Billy didn't just advocate for fairness. She helped build systems, programs, and pipelines that actually put fairness into practice, pushing for women and people of color in decision making roles across business and education.
Julie Foudy
Again, again, thank you. Thank you. Kinger number seven. The Kinger made sure that Title nine was fully realized. She was one of its loudest and most consistent champions. Even testifying. Abby before Congress. She was challenging schools, ensuring that the spirit of the law translated into real access. Her voice turned policy into actual participation. So thank you for that as well. Kinger.
Abby Wambach
Number eight. The Kinger made it known that women not only had a seat at the table, but also owned a piece of that table. Billy became one of the first prominent female athlete investors through her partnerships with Mark Walter and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Her presence and ownership, it really helped normalize women having not just a seat at the table, but really having equity in the game. Kinger, I myself am now a team investor and owner and I have you to thank for that.
Julie Foudy
Yeah. Samesies. Number nine. The Kinger preached from the very beginning that women's sports investments should not be based on sympathy, but actually on strategy.
Abby Wambach
Love.
Julie Foudy
Yes.
Abby Wambach
Yeah.
Julie Foudy
So Billy's approach, so smart to equality, was grounded in business. She taught from the very early days that investing in women, it's not a favor, it's not a cause. It's smart financially and it's smart morally as well. It's a good decision. That idea seeded the billion dollar women's sports economy we see today. And she was saying that from day one. Party people.
Abby Wambach
Last and finally, not least, number 10.
Julie Foudy
Drumroll, please.
Abby Wambach
Drum roll, please. The Kinger made sure generation after generation could see what they would be. You have to see it to be. It wasn't just a quote, it was her mission. Every girl who've who's ever picked up a racket, a soccer ball, a hockey stick has lived in the world. Billy built one where seeing a woman lead, win and demand more is just simply normal. Y. Oh, Billy K. What would we have done without you? Nothing.
Julie Foudy
I know.
Abby Wambach
Literally, I know.
Julie Foudy
Oh, we're going to put that list and honestly, we could have done 82. It would have been so easy to do 82. We're going to put that list of. Of 10 ways that Billy has helped change the world in our show notes, so make sure you check it out. Also, don't go anywhere because the Kinger is going to get the surprise.
Billie Jean King
I love that.
Julie Foudy
She has no damn clue about any of this.
Abby Wambach
She thinks she's just getting on and recording a pod with us. She has no idea what's about to happen to her. And P. S the party people don't know either. There's a lot of really interesting and fun things ahead. You really are going to want to stick around. Yes, I promise. I'm not just saying a lot of.
Julie Foudy
Friends will join this party and we may or may not come back as Billie Jean King look alikes. Who knows? It's a birthday party. It's a birthday bash. We'll be back.
Abby Wambach
And you know what, Jules? We'll have to get her to. To decide who's the best lookalike.
Julie Foudy
Between you and I, I think I could win.
Abby Wambach
You might, because my, my. The wig that I purchased is falling apart and I cannot wear it.
Julie Foudy
You can't it's already falling apart.
Abby Wambach
It's. It's completely. Like the hair is falling out of it.
Julie Foudy
Please wear it.
Abby Wambach
I don't know. And it smells kind of weird, so I'm just a little bit.
Julie Foudy
No, you're wearing it.
Abby Wambach
I'm a little bit.
Julie Foudy
You're wearing it. Do it for Kinger. Do it for Kinger.
Abby Wambach
Jules. Okay. You know that feeling when you find something so fundamentally amazing, you immediately text five of your best friends about it? Yeah. That is exactly what happened when I put on Vuorie's Dream Knit performance.
Julie Foudy
I know, I know.
Abby Wambach
I also am. Am donning this sweatshirt that I was just gonna pull.
Julie Foudy
It's on the bed right behind me. I was just gonna pull it over. I travel it.
Abby Wambach
My children are like, I love that. Where's that from? And I'm like, it's Vuri and it's mine. Hands off. Do not touch.
Julie Foudy
No, literally, I was wearing my Vuori big hoodie sweatshirt. I'm gonna. I'm gonna pull it for you a second. Hold on. Stay.
Abby Wambach
Oh, my God.
Julie Foudy
Stay there, party people. This is worth it. I was wearing my big hooded sweatshirt. I can't put it on because I have my headphones in. But everyone was like, what is that? And I was like, not yours. It's mine.
Abby Wambach
It's yours.
Julie Foudy
And they're like, of course it's Vori.
Abby Wambach
All of Yuri clothes are just unbelievably soft. Like, I can't even believe that these soft. These sweatshirts and these performance joggers are as soft as they are. And by the way, I've had some of these for four years. Still soft, folks. And also, they still look like they're. I'm put together enough that I can even go outside and run errands or hop on a zoom or head to a workout without ever changing. I literally live in these performance joggers. V gets it. And we really want clothes that feel good and move with us and also still look great, because I just want to wear the same thing all day. I don't want to have to, like, change in and out of stuff. And I'm working out, and I'm recording podcasts, and I'm going for a walk, and I'm doing things, and I get to wear the Dream Knit fabric all day long because it's lightweight, it's breathable. It's seriously the smoothest material that I've ever worn, y'. All. I'm not even kidding. The versatility is next level. I've worn them to coach, to travel, to lounge to dinners. It's just like I love Vuori so much. They just work. Vuori is an investment in your happiness. Julie Foudy
Okay, party people.
Billie Jean King
Yes.
Julie Foudy
And now to the partiest part of our party. Let's bring in the Kinger. She again had no clue. Kinger, we already kicked off this episode in a way that would make you immensely proud because we gave a history lesson, which we know you love. We laid out just how much our world looks the way it does because of you. Because none of this exists without the battles you fought. So let's not forget, party people. Kinger was not just changing systems. She was also one of the fiercest, most decorated tennis players in history. Kinger does not like when I do this, but I'm doing it. Kinger. Billie Jean King captured 39 Grand Slam titles across singles, doubles and mixed doubles. She won 20 Wimbledon crowns. Correct me if any of this is wrong. Kinger. She reached at least the semifinals at every major and spent years as world number one. She earned 129 career titles. Led, yes, 129 career titles. Led the US to seven Fed cup victories. Now called the Billie Jean King Cup. If she was if it was called that in her day. That was Fed cup in her day. But now it's Billie Jean King cup victories. She coached Olympic teams. She became one of the most decorated, as we know, American tennis players of all time. She was also, FYI, awarded this thing called the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama on in August of 2009. She also has been awarded the French Legion of Honor and she's received a Congressional Gold Medal. She has statues, she has bronze bus, she has trophies. She has tennis centers. She has buildings named after her. But party people, she only has one podcast, Birthday Party, and it's right here. She knew nothing about this, so don't hate us. Kinger. Kinger, welcome to your birthday party.
Billie Jean King
There's a racket all right, that racket's gonna be. Wow.
Julie Foudy
It's old.
Abby Wambach
And for those who are not. Who are listening and might not see this with your own eyes, you might want to. You might want to pop over to YouTube and take a gander, because Julie and I may or may not be dressed up as our versions of Billie Jean King.
Billie Jean King
No, you look pretty cool. You got your glasses. That's word glasses. You're done. Look at this.
Julie Foudy
This is great.
Billie Jean King
You got the sweat ones, you got the headband. You got the goom. Boom, boom, boom, boom. Bowdy's got the racket.
Abby Wambach
Billy. I'm in a dress. I'm in a tennis dress.
Billie Jean King
Whoa.
Abby Wambach
I don't have my bloomers on or whatever.
Billie Jean King
Oh, you do. It looks great.
Julie Foudy
She looks good.
Billie Jean King
Where did you find that? That's fantastic.
Abby Wambach
Yeah, I got it online. I got my ways. Glennon just walked downstairs and she was like, what's happening? What is happening?
Billie Jean King
Yeah, what is happening? We are having a potty.
Julie Foudy
Well, Abby and I really wanted to just wish you the happiest birthday and think and thank you for being gloriously you. But we also are not the only ones that wanted to wish you happy birthday, it turns out. So, yeah, we. We spent as. You know. And I know you have FOMO when we do these, but you're on the wrong side of the country because we do them in your hometown. But we did that watch with us party at. At Watch Me Sports bar in Long beach with Jax and. And the crew for the semifinal. So the. The crowd there. We also had a Billie Jean King look alike, which was so good. Yeah, I'm so glad.
Billie Jean King
I'm so glad you go to the Watch Me Sports there with Jackson. It's Long beach, man. It's my place.
Julie Foudy
Yeah, it's your. It's your hood.
Billie Jean King
Well, if Long Beach. Yeah. But without Long Beach, I wouldn't have made it. So it's really. Every time I hear the word Long Beach, I go, thank you. Thank you. Because the people of Long beach made it possible for me in the park and Rec department. And then I've been to Washabee Sports. It's great. And Jax is fantastic.
Julie Foudy
Yep. Your picture's on the bar, so they wanted to wish you a happy birthday. Hold on, Kinger. Here it is.
Billie Jean King
Really? Happy birthday to you Happy birthday to you Happy birthday, dear Billy G. King Happy birthday to you.
Julie Foudy
Oh, wow.
Billie Jean King
That was a good turnout for the soccer, huh? And they all looked. I love those. All different glasses. That's. Oh, I love glasses. That was the.
Julie Foudy
The lookalike the Billie Jean King lookalike contest. They're not the only party people who wanted to wish you a happy birthday. You also had a few friends. I know you don't like surprises, but we're throwing them at you who wanted to send their very best. Okay, so first up, might have heard of her. Robin Roberts, Good Morning America co anchor and trailblazing broadcaster whose career spans espn, ABC News, and some of the most iconic interviews in sports and culture. Here is Robin.
Billie Jean King
Hey there, Billy. Oh, my goodness. I am so grateful to you. I hope you know, I really hope you know the impact you have had and continue to have on me. And I know countless others, so all.
Abby Wambach
I have to say is happy birthday to you.
Billie Jean King
Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you Billy. Love you. Aw, she's so great.
Abby Wambach
Robin is the best.
Billie Jean King
Yeah, she was a great athlete herself. People don't realize that. Tennis was her first sport. Basketball was her second.
Julie Foudy
Oh, tennis was Robin's first sport.
Billie Jean King
Oh, man. She loves. Oh, my God, she's so fantastic. Yeah. And she does. She had a chance to go to Good Morning America, and I remember asking me, we'd just done an ESPN interview in, you know, Indian Wells or whatever. She goes, what do you think? I've been offered to go to Good Morning America maybe, or to do abc. I go, and what's the question? Well, I'm not sure if I should do it because I've talked to people and they tell me I should stay at espn. I said, are you crazy? Are you nuts? You absolutely go. You're a superstar. She is. She's like a superstar for us. And I said, you no go be the superstar that you are. And do you think the ESPN's not gonna let you work if you want to if you're with abc? I think it might work. I mean, she is such a superstar, and she always. She's one of those people when the red light went on, you know, on the TVs, you know, when their cameras are on her, she just loves it. She just, you know, some people get all, like, terrible. She just, oh, my God, she got so mom. And she loved it.
Abby Wambach
And how important.
Billie Jean King
But she's got the gift.
Abby Wambach
And how important is it that to have a woman who was involved in sports being one of the highest paid TV anchors in all of television, really important for all of us in media to have that and have somebody like Robert, Robin, like. And also, not to mention, she's just fun. She's like a fun person to be around. She's always very, you know, she makes you feel so comfortable whenever she's about to do an interview with you on national live television. You know, she's just the best.
Billie Jean King
Yeah, she's got the gift. She really does. Yeah, she's, she's extra. She has extra and we, you know, anyway, that's. What a nice. Well, great start, kids.
Julie Foudy
Yeah. Oh, we're just getting started. All right, Kinger, we're going to go show you back to back videos here. First one is long time couple Holly Hunter and Gordon McDonald. Holly is an Academy award winning actor whose landmark performances in the piano, broadcast news and decades of film and TV work have made her one of Hollywood's most respected talents. And after Holly and Gordon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Oscar winning actor and bestselling author with a five decade career spanning film, television and advocacy. Here are the first two videos. Happy birthday to you.
Billie Jean King
Happy birthday to you.
Julie Foudy
Happy birthday dear. Happy birthday to you.
Billie Jean King
Happy birthday goat. Yes, we share the same birthday. But guess what? You're the goat.
Julie Foudy
You're the goat.
Billie Jean King
Happy birthday to you.
Julie Foudy
Happy birthday to you.
Billie Jean King
Happy birthday dear Billy the goat. Happy birthday to you. Love you so much. Wow. Can you believe Gordon and Holly getting ready for their harmonizing. Oh my God, are they hilarious or what? They're such a great couple. They really are. And their kids are adorable. I've known her forever and she did that TV movie. She was me in the TV movie. But you know, she is an actor's actor. I always love talking with people who just love acting and they don't care if they are always the movie star. They love acting. And that's Holly Hunter. And Gordon's a writer. He's really good too. He's been in some Law and Order. I'm a Law and Order freak. I don't know if everybody knows it, but I am. And Gordon has been in the Law and Order. So he's. Oh, he's wonderful. And he's a great writer. So they're a great couple. And I haven't seen. We're just taught. We were just texting the other day. We have to see each other. And then Jamie Lee is just. She is. And she is out there. She does those scary movies. Oh, my God. Anyway, she did. She introduced me at the Walk of Fame. I had her and Magic Johnson and what she wrote, I have to get the copy of it. She's just phenomenal. And she's always trying to help others. I mean this she's got. And she's another one who loves acting but they keep putting her in movies that Scare the heck out of everybody.
Julie Foudy
Wait, did she say she had the same birthday as you, too?
Billie Jean King
Yeah, she does. She's my sister.
Julie Foudy
All right, Kinger, another video. This one from you might have heard of her. Rosie Cassells, former professional tennis player, one of the pioneers of women's tennis, a member of the original nine. With you, who helped form the modern WTA Tour, inducted into the International Tennis hall of Fame, here is Rosie.
Billie Jean King
Well, are we on? I hope we're on. But, old lady, I understand you've got a birthday coming up, and I wish we were there to celebrate, but here we are in the desert.
Abby Wambach
Happy birthday, Villi.
Billie Jean King
We've got all the decorations and stuff.
Abby Wambach
So I'm sorry you're not here to share in them, but we'll wear them.
Billie Jean King
All day on your birthday. Well, I know it's gonna be a happy, happy birthday. And again, I wish we were there, but I hope this video will let you know how much we miss you, how much we love you and what.
Abby Wambach
How much we wish that we were there to share in the celebration and the cake.
Billie Jean King
So come and visit. We'll be waiting for you. We've got your room reserved, you and Alana. So come visit and have a great time on your birthday and in South Africa. Kisses. Bye. Oh, well, you should know that the person with spoon. With is Spoon. That's. We call her Spooner, but it's Connie Spooner. She was our first athletic. Athletic trainer ever. I think she's the first woman to get that, too, at San Diego State University. And Rosie, how do you like those bows on their head? Flashing away? They are such party animals, by the way.
Abby Wambach
Yee.
Billie Jean King
You got the right people on that one. And Rosie and I play doubles a lot. And probably pound for pound, she's five, two and a quarter. Don't forget the quarter. Probably pound for pound, she's the greatest athlete we had play in my generation. In my generation. Our generation. No, she's amazing. She was born and raised in San Francisco, but she learned at Golden Gate Park. For all those out there that are listening, and that's a great park. They've had so many great champions come out of that park.
Julie Foudy
Five, two and a quarter. Don't forget the quarter.
Billie Jean King
Don't forget the quarter.
Julie Foudy
Inch by quarter inch.
Billie Jean King
She was so creative. She's probably the most fun to watch as well. She was so creative in the way her brain thought and the shots she'd come up with. So it was. I think we won five Wimbledons together. That didn't. That's not bad.
Abby Wambach
That's just not bad.
Billie Jean King
And also, you know where we were 129. Do you know where we really came through is when we played for our country. We didn't lose a match.
Julie Foudy
Fed Cup.
Billie Jean King
We were like terrors. Oh, no, no. We were crazed.
Julie Foudy
No, no, wait, was Rosie the one you won the first Fed cup trophy with? No, no, the little one that you showed us the, the little, the dish.
Billie Jean King
No, that was darling, hard and Carol Caldwell. No, because Rosie probably old when we first. 63. I don't know how old she was. She was born in 48 and the first one was 63. So anyway, she's. No, she's funny too. She's really funny. But she loves parties. She'd be. Oh, welcome to the parties. She'd love it. Yeah, they. All these people love parties, actually that you found on. You have all the right good party these days. They're unbelievable. They're so.
Julie Foudy
Okay, Kinger, next up.
Billie Jean King
Next.
Julie Foudy
Next up, a dear friend of yours, Christiane Amanpour, Emmy winning chief international anchor for CNN and one of the most respected war correspondents and interviewers of our time. Here is Christiane.
Abby Wambach
Hi, Billie Jean. Happy birthday. I'm coming to you from a very fabulous Ukrainian restaurant here in London, where I'm going to bring you and Ilana the next time. You can see Eugene the chef in the background. And do you know what? Here he used to be not only a restaurateur in Ukraine, but on the front lines fighting for his country, just like you, Billy. You've been fighting for women's rights. You've been fighting for everything that is right. And I celebrate you along with all your friends this birthday. Big kiss from London. Bye. Bye.
Billie Jean King
She is a dynamo. She's one of my favorite icons. They were asking me some of my favorite icons in Britain. She's, you know, she's the one you watched out there with her safari jacket on with the bullets zigging by with the people all around her. I'm like. And I always admired her so much because she really got among the people. And as you notice, she said Ukraine restaurant. Eugene's the chef. I can't wait to meet him. That is so Ama poor. She's like a cyclone when she walks in. She's so smart and so full of energy and life.
Julie Foudy
Oh, that's.
Billie Jean King
Thank you. That's. Boy, you got some great ones. Not good, but great. Oh, yeah. No, these are so special, these people.
Abby Wambach
We're not done yet.
Julie Foudy
Okay, two more back to back. First one is Lindsay Davenport, three time Grand Slam Singles champion, Olympic gold medalist, hall of Famer, who continues to shape the sport as a respected analyst and ambassador. And after Lindsay is Kendall Coyne Schofield. You know Kendall, captain of the US Women's Ice hockey team. Three time Olympian with a gold medal and two silvers. Plus a driving force in building the Women's Professional Hockey League, the pwhl, which of course Billie and Alana helped with as well. So here is Lindsay and Kendall.
Billie Jean King
Happy birthday, Billie Jean. I hope you have the greatest day.
Abby Wambach
You're such an amazing person and role model and we are all so lucky to have you in our lives. Wishing you all the best for the coming year and can't wait to see you soon.
Julie Foudy
Hi, Billie Jean. I just want to say happy birthday. One day is definitely not enough to celebrate someone as special as you are. You know, I think of you every day. I think there's so many people that think of you every day because there's so many people who are able to live out their dream, are able to have opportunities that they wouldn't have otherwise if it weren't for you. And all that you've created and all the change you've created in this world to make this world a better place. From the time I met you, when I was 18 years old, I read pressure is a privilege on the way home from the plane from meeting you. And it was then I realized a lot of the opportunities that I have and the opportunities I didn't even know that were going to be created by you at that time were because of how hard you fought for so many people you never even knew. And I just want to say thank you. Happy birthday. Love you. And one day is definitely not enough to celebrate you. So true.
Billie Jean King
Lindsay Davenport was number one in the world four times. She's six, three. Oh, God. When I was the captain of the Federation cup or Fed cup team, she was on it. And my. I always get these neck challenges because everybody was so tall. I'd be like walking around looking at them. But she's a great analyst and you notice she had her stuff, Stanford sweatshirt on.
Julie Foudy
I did go card.
Billie Jean King
Didn't fy bouty go there. You know why she's wearing it? Her son's going there. He's a good player.
Julie Foudy
I was wondering that.
Billie Jean King
Yeah, Jagger. Jagger, like Mick Jagger? That's how you remember his name. He's adorable. And then Kendall, oh, my God. That's a whole story. Which we'll get into later. But she's the captain of the US in ice hockey. Ilana and I are going to go to Milan to watch the Winter Olympics and watch the US And Canada and all the ice hockey players. And so it's pretty exciting. And Kendall's got a little guy, Drew. His favorite book is My book I Am series. It's for kids. He loves. It's called I Am. It's by Bren Metzler. He's a great mystery writer as well. Anyway, he has a daughter, and he wanted to do one. He has an I Am series, you guys. Everyone should see him. He's got so many great people and, like, Rosa Parks is one and all that. So.
Julie Foudy
Yeah.
Billie Jean King
Anyway, Drew, her little one, and Michael Schofields, who she's married to, and he played NFL. He won. He's got a big ring on. Super Bowl. They're so cute. And he's 6 7, and she's 5 2, so it's hilarious. And she can.
Julie Foudy
Fastest skater on the ice.
Abby Wambach
Kendall.
Billie Jean King
Fastest by far. And you should read her book Fast as her. It's really. It's a great book. I've read it twice. I love it so much.
Abby Wambach
But Kendall's a beast. I love her.
Billie Jean King
She is a beast. Oh, Abby, she's right for your eggs. You two would see eye to eye. Totally. You are. Both of you are a beast. Exactly.
Julie Foudy
But she's a great beast, Billy. Is that what you're saying?
Abby Wambach
I'm saying it.
Billie Jean King
No, I don't think you're a beast. I wouldn't put you as a beast. I'd put you in a Abigail, but I'd put you. No, I have some different categories, but. No, I would not put there.
Julie Foudy
No, I wouldn't either. I wouldn't put.
Billie Jean King
No, I'd put you as a heart and soul, maybe. Of the team.
Julie Foudy
Yeah, stuff like that. I want to be part beast, too.
Billie Jean King
You're a leader. No, you're a beast in your own way. The way you lead.
Julie Foudy
I'm kidding.
Billie Jean King
You are a beast. No, but everyone's different. That's what makes it good. And then you got Abby, who's just. Now there's a beast.
Julie Foudy
You know what I love about this Abs, is that, like, all these people are, you know, talking about the amazing things Kinger's done. And when she comes out of the video, what does she do?
Abby Wambach
She talks about them, of course.
Julie Foudy
Yeah, exactly. She talks about how great they are. Like, Kinger, you're so fabulous at always recognizing people and talking about them and celebrating others and, gosh, it's like one of the greatest traits I love about you is, like, you're always Celebrating others. You don't want to talk about yourself. It's like, let's talk about others.
Billie Jean King
It's fun. Yeah, because people are very interested. I think every human being is interesting. Like I always tell people, if you're getting bored, it means you're not asking good questions. Yes, it's good. Means it's our fault. I'm not asking a good enough question.
Julie Foudy
Right, Right.
Abby Wambach
Okay.
Julie Foudy
This guy is a World Series champion. He's a 14 time All Star. He's one of the most prolific hitters in MLB history. He's now a leading sports and analyst on Fox. He is Alex Rodriguez.
Billie Jean King
Hey, Ron. Hey, Ron.
Abby Wambach
What's up?
Julie Foudy
Billy wanted to wish you a happy, happy birthday.
Abby Wambach
I hope you enjoy it. I hope you have great health, family.
Julie Foudy
Loved ones around you and I know it's going to be another great birthday. I also, excuse my jacket, we did.
Abby Wambach
Not win the World Series.
Julie Foudy
I want to wish you congrats for going back to back and good luck.
Abby Wambach
Next year with a three peat.
Julie Foudy
But again, happy birthday.
Billie Jean King
You're the best.
Julie Foudy
We love you and thank you for all that you've done for all of us.
Billie Jean King
Wow, I love that Rod, man. Hey, Rod. Wow, what a great guy. You know, he's really into business too, which I love about him. And he invests, which I like. And then, yeah, he's, he's wonderful. Lana and I went on his program about business. It was fun. He's a great guy.
Julie Foudy
Well, next up, she is an Emmy winning broadcaster, former tennis player whose distinctive voice has been a fixture across NBC, hbo, Tennis Channel, ESPN and nearly every major sporting stage from grand slams to the Olympics. She is Mary Carrillo. You know her, we love her. Here she is.
Billie Jean King
Mc. These are going to be great.
Julie Foudy
Oh, what is going on in here?
Billie Jean King
These came out. They came out great.
Abby Wambach
And it's just the perfect thing to.
Billie Jean King
Bring to a big birthday party, right?
Julie Foudy
The old pigs in the blanket.
Billie Jean King
It's a classic. It's like the little weenies with the stuff wrapped around it. It's okay. It actually is a virtual birthday party. What the fuck's a virtual birthday party? Well, I mean, it's like on online. So why the hell did I make these? Here's the thing, Billy. I didn't understand the invitation, but all I want to say is when you were born, okay, you created you. You birthed a whole bunch of us, right? Girls and women and boys and men as well. I mean, you gave us our dreams, our hopes, our opportunities. I mean, everything that has happened in my life, I have to say is because of Billie Jean King. And I really appreciate it. And I'm sorry you didn't get any of those weenies. Oh my God.
Julie Foudy
You want more?
Billie Jean King
The party's over.
Abby Wambach
It's done.
Billie Jean King
It's a disaster. You notice how she's talking using her left hand? She's left handed. You know she's a lefty. When she played.
Julie Foudy
I did not notice that.
Billie Jean King
Yeah, she. She was using that hand. She is the best. And she's so good with history and she's such a great storyteller and that's why she works for the Olympics and all that, because she goes and gets the stories that they use. Yeah, she works on them like two and three years out before the Olympics. I mean, they never stop. So anyway, it's going to be exciting for the 2028 Olympics. The story she'll have told. I didn't know. I don't know if she's done them winter. I'm going to find out.
Julie Foudy
MC Hammer. I love her so much.
Abby Wambach
So good.
Julie Foudy
One of the funniest humans out there. So good.
Billie Jean King
Totally.
Julie Foudy
Okay, Billy, we also have a friend of yours since the fourth grade in Long Beach.
Billie Jean King
You didn't get Susan. I know who you got and someone.
Julie Foudy
We owe a heck of a lot to, as you will understand after hearing this. This is Susan Williams.
Billie Jean King
Hi, Billie Jean. Happy birthday. I think often of our fun times together when we first met at Los Cerritos Grammar School in the fourth grade, when we often also we often captained the volleyball and soccer teams with Charles C. Huey and Marianne Somerville, if you remember those names. Mindy McCrae, Susan Organ, Gene Smiley. That made me think you might be interested in playing tennis with me. When I asked you, you were enthusiastic. So we played at a neighbor's court first and then our mothers began to take us to free lessons that Clyde Barker gave at the Long beach public parks. We were then asked to join a new group being formed by enthusiastic tennis playing adults wanting to support the development of junior tennis in Long beach and beyond. We were the original members of the Long Beach Tennis Patrons association with Jerry Cromwell and Alan Robbins. The rest is your history. Happy birthday again with admiration for all you do for tennis and women's sports. With love, Susan. That's the one. We don't totally agree on the story, but you know what? We were talking the other day and it's great that I still am in touch with her because I did meet her in elementary school. Los Ritas. What she talked about. And I do remember the name she mentioned. So that's fun. But Susan Williams. So everybody knows out there as you're listening and hopefully watching, she is the reason for my life, really, because she asked me, do you want to play tennis? And I said, what's tennis? I'm basketball, I'm volleyball, You know, I'm softball, baseball. I'm all these sports. We didn't have ice hockey. Sorry. You know, in California, I would have loved that sport, but. And we didn't have soccer yet, by the way. We did not have soccer any place in the United States. And the first place I ever heard of it was Northern California. That's where they kind of had a little grassroots going. So anyway, she's the reason I'm a tennis player. And wow, am I lucky that she asked me to play tennis. I thank her. She's on my blessing list every morning. Susan Williams, right near the top.
Abby Wambach
Thank you.
Billie Jean King
Without her, I wouldn't have had the life I've had. And the life I've had is just amazing. And if you notice, she brought up Long beach again. And without the people of Long beach, we wouldn't have made it. I wouldn't have made it. So they helped the top two girls and top two boys in Long Beach. That's why she named Jerry and Ellen and she and I. And I was the number two player. She was the number one player. Yeah.
Julie Foudy
Well, I know the list is long of people who are very grateful and should have her on their blessing list as well for Susan Williams because, wow, without her, I can't even imagine this world without you playing tennis and all that you've done beyond that.
Billie Jean King
And she went to Stanford, by the way.
Julie Foudy
Oh, she did.
Billie Jean King
Oh, she was the smartest person in the whole school and our class for sure. Which was great for me because I kept learning because of her. No, she's just brilliant. She's on boards and it's finance. In finance and numbers. She's brilliant. No, she's just brilliant. She played on the golf team and the tennis team. I think at Stanford. She was a better golfer than tennis. Yeah.
Julie Foudy
That is awesome. Okay, finally we have a video from the former world number one doubles player, Wimbledon and US Open champion, one of the most respected leaders in women's sports. Plus, of course, longtime partner and wife to the kinger and driving force behind major equity ownership and league building efforts in women's sports. She is Elana Kloss.
Billie Jean King
Happy, happy birthday, Billie Jean. How lucky am I to have had the chance to celebrate so many of your birthdays? You are the love of my life. You changed the world. You changed my life. And I know you're not done yet. Have a wonderful birthday. And I look forward to many, many more happy and healthy years. I love you. And we have one more special surprise for you. Are you kidding me?
Julie Foudy
One more special surprise party, people.
Abby Wambach
Somebody is bringing in something.
Billie Jean King
How did you do that?
Abby Wambach
And here's a lot of cloths. Everybody bringing a birthday cake to Billie. J.K. yeah.
Billie Jean King
Thank you, Mommy.
Julie Foudy
Happy birthday to you. Alana, Great job.
Billie Jean King
How did you do that? Okay, I gotta do a wish.
Julie Foudy
Yeah, make a wish. Kinger, I have. I have a question before you. Before we let you go for this birthday celebration. Like when you. You see all those videos and of these friends and this full life that you've had, but yet you're at 82 and almost 82, and you are. And you are still wanting to change the world in so many different ways, right? You're still advocating, you're still fighting, you're still traveling, you're at every event that matters in women's sports.
Billie Jean King
Where.
Julie Foudy
Where does that commitment to doing good come from? Because I imagine there are a lot of people when you retire and you get into the latter stages of your careers and lives, you're like, I just want to, you know, enjoy it. Rather than. Because you still work really hard.
Billie Jean King
Yeah, Lana, I work. We work every day.
Abby Wambach
Why?
Julie Foudy
Just about.
Abby Wambach
Why?
Billie Jean King
Why? We're driven. We love it. We love to help others. Helping others. Helps yourself as well. I guess it makes. Gives you in. What is the life without people? I mean, love people. I mean, and people love their sports. They love it. The kids who are trying to have their dream, we love. We love. We talk about this a lot, is we want to give them their dream. I want kids to have the dream because you can have a dream. I had a dream for professional tennis, and we didn't have it. And it was terrible. And I came from watching baseball, football, all the professional sports. It was just horrible. When I got into tennis, I was crazed. I was absolutely nuts about changing. And I like to think about concepts, listening to others about what their thoughts are. And then I like to put my money in it. Like own tournaments since 1968. Invest. If you really think you love this so much, well, then invest in it, get in it and help. Help others. Yeah. A lot of people just think about how much money they can make. But if you. If you actually invest better, you will make more than the person making the money.
Abby Wambach
Actually, if you.
Billie Jean King
If you invest in.
Abby Wambach
If you invest in people and other people's dreams, you can't lose. And your, your, your decades long commitment to sports, women's sports, not only changed our lives, but I would argue changed every single person's life in the world who plays sports worldwide right now. Wow.
Billie Jean King
That'S kind of overwhelming.
Abby Wambach
I just think that you've made the biggest difference, more than any other human being has ever made the difference in sports. You're just, you're just thanking. We love that you're ours. We love that, that you were born. And I'm so glad that, you know, all these friends of yours came to and showed up for you as well.
Billie Jean King
Thank you. I appreciate that. I love the fact the trio here. I look forward to our shows. Man, I'm ready. Let's party. Let's party.
Julie Foudy
Okay, Party pose on.
Abby Wambach
Party pose.
Julie Foudy
You want to put that cake in there? You want to put that cake in.
Billie Jean King
I know, but wait a minute, wait a minute. Alana, get in the party pose. Alana. Alana, where are you? She's working. She's working. She's working.
Julie Foudy
I dropped my cake off. I'm back to work.
Billie Jean King
I know. You're just. We're going to be in the party pose.
Julie Foudy
You're going to get in the party pose, Alana.
Billie Jean King
Here we are, cooks. Get in there. Thanks, Wavy.
Julie Foudy
Ready on three. Party pose on three. One, two, three.
Billie Jean King
It was fun. And this looks like my favorite cake. I have a feeling.

Podcast: Welcome to the Party
Hosts: Abby Wambach & Julie Foudy
Featured Guest: Billie Jean King
Date: November 20, 2025
In this jubilant, celebratory episode, Abby Wambach and Julie Foudy secretly throw an on-air 82nd birthday party for tennis and equality legend Billie Jean King (“Kinger”). This “ultimate pregame celebration” in the middle of NWSL Championship Weekend becomes a joyful tribute to King’s enormous legacy—surprising her with video messages from friends, fellow athletes, actors, and advocates whose lives she has touched.
The episode is both a heartfelt history lesson on King’s groundbreaking contributions to sports and society, and a lighthearted, laugh-packed party complete with costumes, stories, and a cameo appearance by King’s partner, Ilana Kloss, delivering a birthday cake. King, frequently overwhelmed and reflective, spends as much time celebrating her friends as they do celebrating her.

“She taught us…to never settle for the crumbs.” —Abby Wambach [04:46]

Holly Hunter & Gordon MacDonald, then Jamie Lee Curtis (Oscar winners) [27:00]
Jamie Lee: “Yes, we share the same birthday. But you’re the GOAT!” [27:10] Billie Jean (teasing): “She is out there. She does those scary movies. Oh my god! Anyway, she introduced me at the Walk of Fame…” [28:50]
Rosie Casals & Connie "Spooner” [29:15]
“We’ll wear the bows all day on your birthday…We love you and wish we could share in the cake!” —Rosie Casals [29:36] Billie (reflective): “Probably pound-for-pound, Rosie’s the greatest athlete of my generation.” [30:00]
Christiane Amanpour (CNN anchor) [32:18]
“You’ve been fighting for women’s rights, you’ve been fighting for everything that is right. And I celebrate you.” [32:33] Billie: “She’s a dynamo…She really got among the people.” [33:05]
Lindsay Davenport (Tennis HOF) & Kendall Coyne Schofield (Ice Hockey captain) [34:28]
“From the time I met you…I realized a lot of the opportunities I have… were because of how hard you fought for so many people you never even knew.” —Kendall Coyne Schofield [34:42] Billie: “Kendall…is the fastest skater on the ice. And you should read her book, ‘Fastest Her.’ It’s a great book. I’ve read it twice.” [37:20]
Mary Carillo (broadcaster, comedian) [40:00]
“When you were born, you birthed a whole bunch of us, right?…You gave us our dreams, our hopes, our opportunities…everything that has happened in my life, I have to say, is because of Billie Jean King.” [40:46]

“You might be interested in playing tennis with me. … We played at a neighbor's court first and then our mothers began to take us to free lessons…” [43:03] Billie: “She is the reason for my life, really. Because she asked me, ‘Do you want to play tennis?’ and I said ‘What’s tennis?’…I thank her. She’s on my blessing list every morning.” [44:52]
Ilana Kloss (partner and wife), delivers King’s cake [46:50]
“You are the love of my life. You changed the world. You changed my life. And I know you’re not done yet.” —Ilana Kloss [46:50]
[48:39–51:14] Julie asks Billie where her drive comes from and why she still works tirelessly:
“Why? We’re driven. We love it. Helping others helps yourself as well…What is life without people? Love people. … I want kids to have the dream because you can have a dream.” —Billie Jean King [49:03] “If you invest in people and other people’s dreams, you can’t lose.” —Abby Wambach [50:17]
King is visibly touched and jokes throughout, but her sincerity shines:
“Thank you. I appreciate that. I love the fact the trio here. I look forward to our shows. Man, I’m ready. Let’s party. Let’s party.” [51:04]
This episode is more than a birthday party. It is an exuberant celebration of Billie Jean King’s transformative legacy—not only as a sports icon, but as a tireless champion for equality, inclusion, and joy in women’s sports. The love and impact are palpable, both in the tributes and in King’s own humble reflections. As the party closes, it’s clear: every celebration in women’s sports is in some way a celebration of Billie Jean King.
