A
Okay, Abby, let's talk World Cup.
B
This is like the World cup of World Cups. When you get to play for your country on your home soil, it's like the ultimate 12th man.
A
This is a unifier in such a global way. And damn, does the world need that right now. And especially this country. I've been going down the World cup algorithm rabbit hole and it is so fun. I love all this. It gives me like goosebumps when I'm watching it all.
B
So good.
A
Exactly what I wanted. Let's go, United States. Let's go, boys.
B
Attention, the party is about to commence.
A
Welcome to the party. What's up, party people? I'm Julie Foudy.
B
And I'm Abby Wambach. Hey, Jules. What's up, Abigail? What you rockin K Verde?
A
Oh my God. Look what I got. I was gonna surprise you.
B
Sent you one. Thank you. To Neil Beithy, former U.S. soccer.
A
I was like, how did I get this?
B
Yes, I know, it's so great. I'm so excited.
A
Sorry. Tell everyone who Beithy is. I interrupted.
B
Okay. Neil B. Used to work for U.S. soccer. He was like communications guru guy. Yeah. And anything.
A
Thanks, Beath.
B
Yeah, he was just like. He worked his way up from. He like became big, big time. And honestly, when he texted me, I've got a Cape Verity I'm working with a new team, Cape Verde. I'm gonna send it to you. I didn't know Cape Verde was a team in the World cup because it's their first nor a country in the world.
A
Did you check it out like I did though.
B
I was like, where is this place? This is interesting. West coast of Africa. Yes. Yeah. So thank you, Neil. I'm very excited. My wife also got one. And now that the goalkeeper is a superstar, we're going to talk about.
A
Yeah, we'll talk about it. We're going to talk about. We're going to talk about all World cup stuff. Full chisel. There's no question. We are going to talk a lot of that. But first, Abigail, where in the world
B
is Billie Jean King? Where in the world is Billie Jean King? Where is she? Where is she? Detroit.
A
So Billy is at. This is our little fun segment we always do of where in the world is our other podcast host? Because she is on the move. 82 years old and Billy is like travels 10 times more than Abby and I combined.
B
By 50. I'm done traveling this much. By 50. That's what I said.
A
And guess what? Billy was at the PWHL awards on Tuesday night and she got to hand The Billie Jean King MVP award to Boston goalie Erin Frankel. She actually became the first goaltender in league history to win it.
B
Yeah, that's pretty rare for a keeper for a goalkeeper to get it.
A
And not many get to present an MV MVP trophy with your own name on it.
B
Oh my gosh. That's so funny. Here you go. I'm going to give you my award myself.
A
Yes. She's also there for the 2026 PWHL entry draft, which we will talk a little bit more about in a bit. And party people, we see all your comments and we love all your feedback. So thank you for writing in. Please, please continue to do so. Keep all those questions and emails coming. Party people questions, gmail.com. we have two full power to the Party People episodes coming up in the next month or so where we're going to answer all your questions. So keep sending them in. And in the meantime, Abs, we are going to start answering a few questions when time permits. So later in this episode, who knows, yours might get red. Stay. Stick around.
B
We read them all. We read them all.
A
This could be your lucky day, party people. Okay, but first, the Knicks and World cup have been dominating our feeds and the airwaves as we know it. But there's still a lot of women's sports happening and that's what truly matters, party people. So let's catch you up, shall we?
B
Yes.
A
Big news in the tennis world, Abs. Did you see all this? Serena Williams confirmed she'll return to Wimbledon for the first time in four years. And she is reuniting and it feels so good with her sister Venus on a doubles wild card.
B
And it's so exciting because she's a 23. 23 jewels time grand Slam singles champion.
A
She's trying to catch Kinger. Maybe. Maybe she's trying to.
B
How many Does Kinger have?
A
39. Yeah.
B
What is.
A
She's like, I gotta. I gotta unretire to catch King. Yeah. And she kicked off her Berlin Tennis Open doubles run on Tuesday alongside world number 10, Carolina Mujova. And sadly, it was short lived as the pair lost 6,464 to Juliana Amos and Erin Routliff in the opening round.
B
I can't imagine Jules being 44, coming back after four years and like having any of the reflexes, like, how is she doing this? Like, I know. Can you imagine going out and trying to play at the top level? I know. Even just like a year after you retired? Like, once I retired, my body was like, nope, no more fast twitch. Muscles gone.
A
I think what is really smart is that she first texted when she came back out of retirement last week. She texted 19 year old Canadian phenom Victoria Mboco and said, please be my double smarter. So that's what you, you go to the young kids.
B
Young.
A
You go to the young kids. Right.
B
Brilliant.
A
They actually played last week at Queen's Club and, and it sadly came to also an abrupt ending because they did win their first round match. But Imboko hurt her knee. Oh, young kids aren't supposed to get hurt. That, that's not supposed to be.
B
Maybe she was covering too much of the, of the surface of the court. Because if I'm a Serena, I'm like, you're going, you're moving, you're running for me.
A
Right. So they, they were actually forced to withdraw from that tournament. So speaking of Wimbledon though.
B
Yes, Jules, did you see this? They, they increased the prize money in the prize pool by 20%. It's bringing the total to $86.2 million.
A
So what they did at the French Open I think worked right. Like they had this media protest at the French Open. We did a whole episode with Kinger and Alana Classic on what they were fighting for the players. So it's cool.
B
Singles champion Jules is going to earn $4.8 million while this I think is so great. While first round losers will still receive $107,000. That's amazing.
A
But the crazy thing is ABS, remember they were fighting for that 22%. Even with that increase, that's still only about 15% of Wimbledon's revenue.
B
Oh, wow. Okay.
A
Yeah. Okay, so just a reminder, this player led group, it included all the top players like Coco Gauff, our Arena Sabalenka, Yannick Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and I love that it was both men and women too together fighting for this. They had been pushing for that 22% of Grand Slam revenues similar to other tour of events. So as we were talking about that gained some traction at the French Open where they staged a media protest, discussed the possibility of a future Grand Slam boycott and suddenly Wimbledon changed. And they had argued, unlike most tournaments, it that you know, hey look, we're reinvesting our profits into facilities and grassroots tennis and long term growth of the sport. And the players were like, great. Yes. But like also pay us.
B
Yeah. What I think is really interesting about tennis that's different than every other sport is that because these tournaments have equal prize money. This is what I think is so interesting because the tennis tournaments have equal prize money to the men. Then the Men and the women can join forces and become one big group fighting with that amount of leverage. To me, it is a really, really interesting and smart tactic of what they're doing. But it's a great model for. For what we could potentially see in the future for all the other sports, for women's soccer, for women's basketball, you name it. But it's like getting that equal prize money is so important. And I do know that Cindy Cohn, the U.S. soccer president, is trying to fight for that on the FIFA prize money side of things as well.
A
That would be huge.
B
Huge. That would be amazing. It would be amazing.
A
That really would be. Okay, so WNBA updates as of this recording on Wednesday. Okay. Breaking news. I feel like we need like a. Oh, yeah, a little noise for that, Jack. We're gonna work on that.
B
Breaking News.
A
Starting in 2027, the WNBA will move to a 50 game season up from the current 44 game schedule. Okay, that's good. Let's go. All right. More games. And you know how there's been a lot of drama around the Indiana Fever.
B
No.
A
With Stephanie White and Caitlyn Clark getting in fights, you know, and like.
B
Got it. Got it.
A
What's happened to this team? They're a mess, was all the discussion. I think it's all just like clickbaiting for Caitlyn Clark stuff. But a funny thing happened while everyone was talking about the drama there. They just keep winning. Indiana has quietly strung together four straight victories and looks much more like the contender. People expected that. Then, you know, the headlines are declaring
B
a good way to shut the fans up. The clickbaity thing up. Yep.
A
Or just, you know, the bots that, like.
B
But here's the thing. I am not opposed to this clickbaity world in terms of women's sports. Like, I think that. That there's this thing where the drama, it's entertaining. It's like, oh, what is happening? People care. People are. Are caring. And so even if it might not necessarily be fully true all the time, this is exactly what they're doing on the men's side of things, too. So it's like, to me, this feels like kind of growth in this weird backwards social media way.
A
I wonder what Caitlin Clark would say to that. But yes, yeah, true.
B
From her perspective, not great. But also, she's. She's earning bags and bags and bags of money as, like the most famous woman athlete in the world right now, I would argue. So I think she's fine.
A
Okay. And the Commissioner's cup just got a little more spicy and Part of people, you may be asking, what is the Commissioner's Cup? Okay, so it's the WNBA's in season tournament. So they basically designated these regular season games and they double up as this Commissioner cup game. And. And so the top teams from each conference try and advance to the final because you are competing for a $500,000 prize pool. And the other really cool thing is that teams can earn money for local charities and nonprofits that they want to partner with, so they can give that away too. So the championship game, that Commissioners cup championship game is June 30, and Dallas absolutely crushed the Aces 96, 66 earlier this week, which is the second time that Dallas has beat them this season, which prevented them from clinching a spot in the cup final. And rookie Az Fudd has been on fire.
B
Jules, she dropped 19 points. Yeah. On like what is like an absurd 8 for 9 shooting night against Vegas. And you know, she's also starting to look pretty comfortable alongside Paige in that backcourt because like, and this is a rookie, like she's just jumped right in. You know, she was just on UConn like a minute ago and now she's crushing it. For this Dallas team, it's amazing.
A
In the east, the defending champion, defending champion New York Liberty, they've already punched their ticket, Abs.
B
Okay, got it.
A
So that's. They're in for the June 30th Commissioners cup final, the championship game. Okay. And they're getting Sabrina Yanesu back from injury, so that's great news. They're like, it's crazy.
B
They went on a seven game win streak and then they get Sabrina back. Like, like, what do you, you're like, okay, we'll go on the 20 game
A
win streak now, hitting their stride and then Dallas is getting that attention because they're blowing up the other side of it. Minnesota is sitting right there in the middle of it all. And the Links have remained one of the NB WNBA's best teams. They're tied with Vegas right now in the west cup chase. But as we were just talking about, Dallas blew up the Aces in that last game. And, and what's crazy with the Links is all of this, despite Nafisa Collier is not even there. Right. Olivia Miles, their rookie, has been lighting it up, averaging 17 points, six assists and five rebounds per game.
B
Olivia went to Notre Dame. Where did she go?
A
Notre Dame and then tcu.
B
Yeah, that's right. Oh yeah, that's right. I love that. I love watching that kid play in college.
A
I know, she's really fun. Okay. And then in soccer news, did you see this? I just saw this brutal second game of the U.S. women's National Team playing Brazil. Oh, my God, that game. We need to do a whole episode on that.
B
Yes, we do, actually. And. And talk about how Emma Hayes handled herself, which was just like, master class on coaching. Oh, and. And press conference, post game, like, master class. We should do that. We should do a press conference episode.
A
And we just have Emma on giving another master class.
B
Yeah.
A
Okay. I ran into Lindsay Heaps at the first men's game, and she was like. I go, oh, my gosh. Because this was only a few days. They just gotten back from Brazil. I was like, what was that? She goes, julie, in all my games I have played, that was insane. I know. I was like, just get him off the field. Get him off the field now.
B
Yeah. I mean, what was it like to call that game, Jules? Because you called it like, it was insane. How do you stay positive? And I know.
A
I was honestly getting a little bit worried at the end because we didn't know how much stoppage time, because, of course, the world feed never even showed us. And we were, like, texting Aaron Heifetz, the press officer with the team, and he's dealing with all the craziness, so he's like, I couldn't even get back to you. Trying to figure out how much stoppage time we didn't. And it just kept going. And I'm like, this needs to end. This is getting bad. This is dangerous.
B
People are going to get hurt. And it's true.
A
And Dugenia, who was. Which is so sad because she was crushing it with San Diego and the Brazilian national team. So they confirmed that she tore her ACL and her meniscus in her right knee. Yes. In that second game. And it wasn't. It wasn't anything like. It wasn't a bad tackle, as we know. Like, this stuff happens in soccer, of course. But, um, it was just a weird tackle, and she just landed on it wrong. She was jumping over a player and landed on it wrong. Um, and she had started all 13 matches for San Diego. 5 goals and 4 assists for them. So. Yeah, that's brutal. That's a. That's a gut crusher for. For San Diego fans as well. Um, and then maybe you missed it, abs, but Hillary Knight is heading to expansion team in Detroit. Did you see that?
B
Yeah, I texted Dan.
A
I just got her beautiful Seattle jersey, too. I'm psychedelic.
B
I just. I texted Dan, her agent. I was like, what in the world going on?
A
Yeah. It's a done deal. Detroit and Las Vegas completed a sign and trade agreement because she had actually been. She wasn't protected by Seattle. She got picked up by Vegas. They traded her to Detroit. So the five time Olympian is in Detroit. How about that?
B
They don't protect them and they're just thinking nobody would pick her up. Whoopsies. Whoopsies. Seattle.
A
And then the actual draft, which is where Kinger is at, is taking place. As we're recording this episode, the expansion Vancouver Goldeneyes have the number one pick, and I'm thinking that top pick may go to the Wisconsin defender who we loved, Olympic MVP Caroline Harvey. But there's also. Layla Edwards is available. Abby Murphy. Damn, she's good, too.
B
Yeah. Wow.
A
These young kids. I mean, it's a deep draft and all these Olympic stars.
B
So good for hockey, for women's hockey. Like, let's go, young stars already. Come on.
A
And a record 236 players are eligible, including 23 Olympians.
B
That's incredible.
A
Yeah. Okay, when we come back, World cup fever is sweeping the country, and no one's got a bigger case of it than we do. That's for sure.
B
Okay, Jules. So I try to be pretty intentional about the products that I buy for my family. So when it comes to laundry, I really, I. I choose All Free clear detergent.
A
I love this.
B
Yeah.
A
Because we're always talking about being mindful with what we eat or what we put into our bodies, but I actually never really thought about laundry detergent in the same way.
B
Yeah, I know. Same. And. And when you really think about it, you're wearing these clothes all day, you're working out in them, you're traveling in them, sleeping in them, and then drying off after the shower with them on. So I do think it matters. That's why I like that All Free Clear uses only essential ingredients that. Jules. Tackle tough stains and tough odors. We've got teenagers.
A
I was going to say, you need that.
B
It's exactly. It's gentle on the skin, so it's. It's also soft.
A
Yeah. And it's 100% free from dyes and perfumes and parabens. And I feel that once you know that, you can't unknow it, which is a good thing.
B
Totally. I know. And for me, between our kids and sports gear and just life, there's just always stains, stains, stains. Always stains. Like, there's always something happening.
A
Yeah, always. And honestly, I do feel like workout clothes and watch washing them and especially Declan's, like, layers of workout clothes. And how many he puts on a day is a full time job.
B
Exactly. But. But that's what's great, right? Because it actually works on all of that. But I still feel good about using it for everyone in the house and myself too.
A
Yeah. I love that you can look at the of the bottle and actually see what's in it and what each ingredient actually does. That level of transparency, by the way, is not just something you usually get with laundry detergent. Plus, my son Declan has really sensitive skin. He has some allergies. So I love that. As I was saying, there's no dyes or perfumes since those can be irritating to his skin. And as we know, skin is an organ, we worry about what we put on the inside of our bodies. So we should care about what touches our skin too. With clothes and what we wash them in.
B
I know. And that is why it makes it such an easy choice, Jules.
A
It works. And it's a clean you can feel good about.
B
Pick up a bottle of all free clear detergent for your next laundry day. I cannot express how much I love the same day delivery system through shipped during big game day weekends. And I want to also be honest. Like, I feel, I feel like I'm a little bit weird. I feel like I'm a little.
A
I can't wait to hear this about
B
the watch party food. Okay. Because I've been to enough. And I want the exact chip that I want. I want the right sparkling water. I like the good salsa. All of it. Like, I want. I'm very specific.
A
Very specific, very important. I could not agree more with you.
B
One of the things that I like is that I can text directly with the shopper, right? So that they can help get exactly what I need. Plus, with shipped kits, you can actually add all your watch party essentials to your cart with just one click. And it's not just like groceries either, right? A
Okay, Abby, let's talk World Cup. You know what? I decided I need like an. I need one of those like Uncle Sam hats. This is the closest I have and it's not, it's not really there.
B
There's not. It's not there. It doesn't have red in it.
A
No, it doesn't have the red or star.
B
I agree. I agree.
A
I need to, I need to get one. I might have to wear one to the next game.
B
It's very exciting. It's just like, there's just something different than I've not ever experienced before, which is so, yeah, freaking exciting. You know, like this is like the World cup of World Cups, it feels like for the men and it's just bringing people into our world a little bit. Yeah, it's cool.
A
Oh, I love it so much.
B
And Jules, did you see that the, the New Zealand footballer Tyler Bindon, he made some history with his appearance in Monday's World cup group stage game against Iran.
A
Yeah, I saw Ali Riley post something on this, but that's so cool.
B
And for those who might not know, Jenny Bindon played for New Zealand and now her son is the first mother son pair to both appear in World cup, right? Which is so freaking cool.
A
How Cool.
B
So freaking cool. So Jenny Bindon, I played against her, I think, in three World Championships. 0, 7, 11 and possibly 12. We'll have to fact check that little fun fact about Jenny Bindon. We got into some tussles, we got into some challenges. She's a goalkeeper. Any. Any free kicks. So fast forward, many years later, 10 years later, I'm dropping Amma off to go work out with beast mode Dave. And all of a sudden, Jenny Bidden's face comes into.
A
Stop it.
B
Into my window. And I was like, hello, Jenny Bindon, what is going on? And so Emma was training with. With her son, which is so cool.
A
Wait, Tyler, who's playing on the New Zealand team?
B
Yes. Yes. What? Yeah, she was trained. And this is like four years ago at this point.
A
Okay.
B
Yeah.
A
So he was younger, like, recent. I was like, how is this happening?
B
Yeah, but he's still pretty young, you know? I know, I know. Yeah.
A
I love the pictures that Ali Reilly was showing because she, of course, played with her on the New Zealand team.
B
Ye.
A
And of little Tyler when he was like hanging out with the team and he was like, you know, five years old. It was so cute.
B
Incredible.
A
Okay, and then before we get to the U.S. men's National Team, let. Let's talk about some of the other things that are happening because I do love that you had. You obviously had a lot of stars coming into this. They are crushing 38 year old Messi. Did you see Messi? Okay. Inner Miami MLS star, by the way, people had said, right, that, oh, MLS is going to drag him down. Not so much. Hat trick for Argentina to beat Algeria 3 0. He scored all three goals.
B
Jules, did you see the first goal?
A
Yes.
B
It was always like, what I saw. I know what is going on. How is he doing this? Like. And everybody, all everybody's talking about this morning is he's the greatest that has ever played. And that is true.
A
Absolutely.
B
And also I think, and this is. I said this to Glennon last night, like, there's the debate, Ronaldo versus Messi. Right. I think Messi is the most beloved footballer that has ever played.
A
For sure. There is no debate.
B
And Ronaldo is like the most admired. And they're just different. There's just like a difference between the two of them. Yeah, I think he. I think people, like admire Ronaldo because he's so dynamic and scores goals and is confident, slash arrogant and messy. They're just like, they're. They're two sides of the same coin.
A
I know Messi's cute little smile when he's like, I just love him. So cute. Then he didn't even, like, want to make someone move off the. The seats. Did you see that? So we just sat on the grass. I was like, okay, I love him. That was what's crazy enough. That was his first hat trick in a World cup. And he turns 39 on June 24, like next week.
B
No way.
A
And he's now on top of the all time scoring list. And let's be clear. This is for the Men's World Cup. With 16 goals, he's tied with Germany's Miroslav Klose. And. And let it be known, party people and the world. The current World cup record is held by. Drumroll, please. Marta. 17 goals. Mm.
B
How many games do you think Martha did it in? Do you know?
A
Less than Messi, probably.
B
Yeah.
A
How many?
B
I think Marta did it in 23 games. I looked this morning because I was like, well, everybody's like, the most goals ever scored in a World cup is Messi. And I'm like, no, wrong. Marta's. Martha's still there at 17. And then I thought, how many games did. Did Marta play? Because women still. Tournaments over these last many years play fewer games than the men do. Messi played 27 games, so he scored 16 and 27. And Marta played in 23 games and she scored 17. Let's go.
A
Let's go. And we're going to get Marta for one more World Cup. So it's going to be a race that is.
B
That is. How are they doing? I don't understand. I don't understand.
A
She'll be 41 when she plays in that next World cup, but it's in Brazil. And they've never won a World Championship. No Olympics, no World cup. For, for the women's side, they have, of course, on the men's side, I
B
think they've come close. They've been in a few finals that I played against them. Yeah.
A
Okay. Mbappe, also Real Madrid star, French star. He got two goals for France in that 31 win over Senegal. He became France's all time leading scorer with 58 goals.
B
I think France has a chance here. I think France has a chance. They. They impressed me in many ways. And I think that losing in the final in the way that they did is eerily similar in what I was feeling in 11. And then we went on to win in 15. So I'm just saying I'm. Yeah, I think. I think France has something going on. Yeah.
A
First half, I was like, okay. Second half, I was like, okay, okay. And Norway's Erling Haaland, who, we all know him as a man city star because he's never played in a World Cup. Norway hasn't played in a World cup in his era. This is his first one. And the guy just knocks in goals, as we know, as we've seen him do. But he got two goals and therefore one win versus Iraq. So that I think that's all good news. But the best news, good news for the World Cup. The best news for the World cup is that the United States of America crushed in their opening game, as we know, and they play on Friday. So I just, I just want to like, talk the US Men for a little bit.
B
Yes, please, let's do it.
A
I mean, as we were talking about in a prior episode, like, I don't think anyone would have. I mean, we. I don't call men's games, but obviously tnr, TNT broadcast crew does and I am around them all the time and we're talking about the men. And I don't even think those guys who are constantly with their finger on the pulse would have predicted the game against Paraguay and the way they played and how good they looked and the two send off games leading up to the World cup against Senegal in Germany. And like, I just, I'm hopeful. I'm like, yes, come on, baby.
B
I just think that these guys have this unique opportunity. I know I've said this before, but yes, there's just something special about playing a World cup on your home soil. And the fandom wildness gets even more wild. People are coming from all over the world, of course, but when you get to play for your country on your home soil, there's just something. It's like the ultimate 12th man. And what I loved about the game like the most was how quickly they were going from transitioning from offense to defense.
A
Yeah.
B
Like their transition time in terms of they lose the ball and not just the player on the ball who may have lost it or, or, or passed, you know, passed it to the other team. They were getting the ball back quickly. Yeah.
A
And their counter press was amazing. Yes.
B
That is just all heart. That's like, that's like I messed up. I got to do this or my, my boy messed up and I've got to. I've got his back. That is an indicator to me around team closeness and team camaraderie. And, and of course, like the fans are there and they're cheering you on. So for me, like, of course Pulisic, we're going to talk about him. We're going to talk about Baligan and the two goals but I think overall around the field like it just felt like the team was alive for each other.
A
Yeah. And honestly that's been the piece that's missing, that have been missing. Like it never felt like there was any continuity to it and you know, they were always missing players. They never had their top team or they were injured or Pulisic was kind of, you know, grumbling about not scoring and hasn't hadn't been playing very well and there was a lot of, I don't know, it just felt really disjointed and then it just feels like it's coming together at the right time and when you see the way they're playing, they're on their front foot to your point. I mean every time Pulisic got the ball he was just running at players. I loved it. And then Weston McKinney had the freedom to roam and play wherever he wanted. And really like that front six. When you're talking about Baligan and Weston and Pulisic and Sergino Dest on the other side, it's like they have so many attacking talents. I thought Malik Tillman was really good.
B
Agreed. Yeah.
A
Number 17 who plays in, in the midfield. I thought of course Tyler Adams sitting in that six, holding things down was great.
B
So did you see Richards 100 passing?
A
Yeah. Right, yeah.
B
He completed 100 of his pass.
A
Richards.
B
Yeah, I'm just like. Or Richard. Sorry. Yeah, I just was like this is right. Yeah, I, I feel like, I don't know, it's. There's just something to be said and we can get into like the tactics of it but I want our, the party people to know that to get seven or eight. How many games do they have to play in this tournament to get to the final?
A
So three to get out and then we've got round of 32, round of 16, that's five, four quarterfinals, semifinals, games, eight.
B
So in order to win they have to win eight games. So over the course of a full on World cup there's going to be moments and even halves that might not look like a full 90 like we just saw. And so how to weather the storms when they come, because they will come is I think like the determining factor on whether you continue on long and deep into tournaments. It's not about questions. Playing the very best at the highest level the whole time, like yes, you're going to want that, but it's also, especially for our men's team, it's about how are we Weathering the pockets of time where we're getting inundated with attacks from quality players, from quality attacks from different teams worldwide. So it's like, don't fret. Do not lose hope. If There is a 45 minute period where our team is struggling to get forward, where our team is struggling to find some rhythm. We just gotta weather those storms. It's exciting. It's exciting.
A
And Australia, who they play on Friday, right?
B
Yes.
A
Also won, which was a surprising result against Turkey. Turkey eye.
B
Turkey. Yeah.
A
Is I guess how I should say it. I have a hysterical story about this around this, but we'll save that for a second. Yeah, just remind me.
B
Okay.
A
But the thing is, I'm a little concerned about Pulisic's. His calf.
B
Yeah, yeah, yeah, me too, me too. Because they definitely look different when he went off in the second half. Yeah, they're a little bit of a different team.
A
And I, I know they're saying like, he's going to be fine, he's going to be fine. But like that's a, like we just said, that's a lot of games. So we need Christian Pulisic to be fine is what I know. So we'll see. They're saying he trained apart from the team on Tuesday, but a lot of the players are all saying he'll be ready. And the management, like it was, it was me just being, you know, extra cautious.
B
Yes. But the management of the players and the minutes that they're getting is also one of the most important things that the coaching staff has to manage. It was, it was something that Jill Ellis really brought into our women's national team approach. When she came on as coach, she basically was sitting us down and like everybody, like everybody's gonna have moments and minutes and we have to get comfortable with some players who are, who are consistently starting and sometimes playing 90 minutes. You might come off games because we need you healthy and flying when we get in the knockout round stage games or we get into the semis or we get into the finals, like you're playing and preparing to be able to go the distance. And so to me it's like how we manage Pulisic and this potential knock of an injury for sure can really do make a big difference for the whole of the tournament for us.
A
Well, okay, so this is what's next for the United States. June 19th. They've got USA versus Australia. As we just talked about, that's on Friday. That's noon Pacific. It's in Seattle. We are doing a watch party in Los Angeles. With Airbnb. We're very excited. Yee haw.
B
I'm so excited.
A
Very excited. And then the final game of the group stage for the United States will be the United States versus Turkey, and that is 7:00pm at SoFi. You can't call it Sofi if you're with the FIFA World Cup. You have to call it the Los Angeles Stadium. So it's at SoFi at 7p on June 25 against Turkey. Do you know why they changed their name? I just Googled this last night because I was like, how do I even say this, Turk? Turkey A. I think, is how I say it.
B
Tell me.
A
They. I don't know if this is true or not. Someone please tell me who's wiser than me. It's they. They were tired of it being confused with the animal.
B
No way.
A
Okay. And this is.
B
This has got to be how they spell it. This got to be how they spell it. And this has got to be how they say it in their language.
A
Best story ever. I. I forgot to ask the kids last night. I can't remember which kid it was, but when one of my kids was in elementary school, like, so they were like 7 or 8 years old. They were like, mom, we had the coolest thing happen to me today at school. And I go, what was that? They were like, the tallest man in the world showed up. And I go, what do you mean the tallest man in the world? They go, he was like 7 foot 10, and he was from Chicken. And I go. I go, what do you mean he was from Chicken? The country Chicken. And I go. I go, second.
B
You mean Turkey?
A
I go, do you mean Turkey?
B
The way that they must have, like, this is information.
A
They changed the name. I laughed so hard. I was like, it's not chicken. The country is Turkey.
B
I need something.
A
When it said that in Google, like, they were tired of. Tired of it being confused for an animal. I was like, oh, my gosh.
B
So that is true.
A
Tell Abby this.
B
That is true. If that. If Google says it.
A
Google. Google knows all.
B
Oh, my gosh.
A
Oh, my gosh.
B
I just assumed it was because they were. We weren't doing it right. And then they're like, this is actually.
A
Yeah.
B
Yeah.
A
Okay. If the US Win. The. If. If the US Win, Group D, they'll stay in California for that round of 32. So this would be ideal. They stay for the round of 32 game. They'll actually play up in San Francisco in the bay area on July 1, and they will take. If they finish top of their group A third place finisher, which is ideal. Okay.
B
Yeah.
A
Finish second in their group. If the U. S. Does, they'll get the runner up from group G, which is Belgium, Egypt, Iran or New Zealand. And that will be in Dallas on July 3rd if they finish third. Because remember, there's 12 groups, eight third place finishers will go through to the round of 32. So if they finish third in the group in advance, they'll have to travel a lot further and play a lot harder team. So we do not want to finish third in our group because you're gonna be basically facing a one, which would be a much tougher opponent. Okay. Oh, so exciting. And as you were saying abs the other day, which is what I think I'm most excited about, is just like, this is. This is a chance where these guys can. And not just the soccer. Right. Like, I think the soccer piece of it is important in terms of what it can do for our sport. But what I am most excited about and what I am following on social media. Social media is this is a unifier in such a global way. And damn, does the world need that right now. And especially this country. Like, when you see what's happening on the streets of some of our cities, are you not brought to tears?
B
Yep. I mean, it's one of the most beautiful things I saw somebody say yesterday. The world cup is doing what the UN Hopes to do. And it's like, this is about truly. It's not. It's not just about sport and winning. It's about all these countries coming together and vying for and playing for something great. Right. And it's glory on behalf of your country. And I know that there's. In our country, there's just like this division that this is an opportunity that these men have. And it's an opportunity that our women's team has taken very seriously. And we've been very. We've known it's not just about women's sports. This is like country and all eyes are on us. It's just. It's just wonderful. It's just wonderful. And I'm so excited about it. This episode episode is sponsored by better help. Happy pride, everyone. So, Jules, we've. I don't know if you know this, but we've had 57 years of pride.
A
I did not know that.
B
Amazing so far, but still, I think there's still a lot more progress to be made, which is why we always kind of stress the importance. Okay. Of community and leaning on your support system. Okay. So friends matter, community matters. And sometimes Having a dedicated space to talk things through with a therapist can really help you understand yourself better and feel less alone while navigating through life. I know that it has completely changed my life. So, jules. With over 30,000 therapists, BetterHelp is the world's largest online therapy platform, having served over 6 million people globally. And I just love how easy they've made it to find a therapist who. Who works for you and how simple it is to switch if it's not a fit. Like, that's such a. That's such a. Like, a big problem in therapy. It's, like, hard to switch. It's hard to find a new therapist. And better help makes it so easy. So now Pride Month is a celebration of community visibility and the freedom to be yourself, and a reminder of how important support and connection can be for mental health. Sign up and get 10 off@betterhelp.com welcome to the party. That's better. H E L P.com welcome to the party. One of the things that I think is kind of funny about getting older is coming to the realization that my parents are people who have lived full on long, entire lives. And every time I talk to my dad, some random story comes out that I've never heard. Somehow, same. It's so weird. I'm like, who are you? Like, I feel like I'm talking to an alien. Maybe it's like a trip he took or a new, like, family story that nobody has ever told me. So I feel like I'm learning something completely new and I'm seeing him in this, like, new light. And if that's you, I think you should check out Remento, because I first heard about Remento on Shark Tank. I don't know if you've seen this, Jules, but it's such a simple idea. Okay. Remento sends them a question each week by text or email, and they just answer by talking like they're telling a story to a friend, which is amazing, so they don't have to type it out. Then Remento takes those recordings and then turns them into a beautiful hardcover book. So this Father's Day, give your dad something that becomes more meaningful every single year. Go to www.remento.co and use code WELCOME to save $20 through Father's Day. That's remento.co like remember and memento. And use code WELCOME for $20 off from into the Life story book with dad's voice inside. Okay, so there's very few things I care more than about than my sleep. Okay, Jules. I basically bags every Single sleep aid possible that you that that is known to man to get the perfect eight to 10 hours. And yes, I said 10 because that's my goal. Nothing has done more for me than upgrading the mattress. Like, we forget that we spend so much of our life on this thing. We really need to invest in ourselves. And I went to my favorite place, Helix. So what I love about Helix is that they don't take like a one size fits all approach to SL tools. Everyone they understand sleeps differently, having a comfortable bed to come home to. Honestly, how many, how many hours of your life have you dreamt about your home? Like getting to your bed at home. Like, there's nothing like crawling into your bed. And Helix, they ship the mattresses right to your door for free. And guess this, I love this. So you get a hundred and twenty night sleep trial to make sure that
A
it's the right fit and it's not like, oh, you get two days to figure this out. 120 night sleep trial.
B
Yeah, that's like almost half a year. Go to helixsleep.com welcome to the party. For 20% off sitewide, 25% off luxe mattresses and 30% off elite mattresses. That's helix sleep.com. welcome to the part.
A
I love that the Americans are sell. I mean, these cultures are colliding in the best way. Like the Scots. Have you gone on that algorithm?
B
It's so great in Boston, like, what is? It's.
A
They're taking over Boston.
B
It's amazing.
A
Please do not let the Scottish people leave because it's just been so much fun. And they're taking over the bars, the streets, they're climbing up all their statues. I mean, and then we saw, you know, the reminder that Japan gives us annually in every world event of how they just treat the earth and they clean up stadiums and they clean up locker rooms and I wish we all could actually jump on that bandwagon because,
B
well, doesn't it make you like know in your bones, oh, this is how they're treating the locker rooms and the stadiums. I wonder what their country looks like and feels like there. It's like, it's like a wonderful PR campaign because it makes me want to go to Japan. I'm like, totally. That's amazing.
A
And like their respect for others, it's a sign of respect. And that's what you feel when you're in Japan. When I went for the Olympics, I kept saying, oh my gosh, we are such assets.
B
It's true.
A
I, I want to be kinder. I Want to. I want more of this in my life. I want this. Like, they're so nice with everything. They hold doors, you know, they're just so respectful. It's like, oh, okay. What else have I been saying? I've been going down the World cup algorithm rabbit hole, and it is so fun because. Did you. Have you seen the world. The FIFA 15 they're calling it, because all these Europeans are coming over here and blown away by, like, the free refills, the portion sizes. Wait, Jack, can you play this? This commercial? I don't think Abby has seen it. It's so good.
B
You were in America for six weeks. This is not you. It's impossible. Have you ever tasted a deep fried Oreo? It's so delicious. Listen, it's really me. I promise. I saw a guy doing, like, a taste test of raising canes. I don't know if you've ever had canes. Yes, of course. This. This London British guy, and he was doing it, and it sold me. I got. I got raising canes for dinner last night for the first time. I've never had it. And he's not wrong. It tasted really good. I didn't feel good after, but, yeah, I feel like the Europeans are definitely going to leave a few. Few pounds heavier.
A
I mean, Freddy is so fun to follow, but I've also gotten into Fabio, this cute Italian kid who's. Who's, like, blown away by the fact that, like, you mean, I can have as many Coca Colas as I want for free refills? I can have this cute little Italian accent that I'm not even gonna try. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. He's just got these big eyes. He's like, I could have a hundred Cokes today.
B
That's funny.
A
Oh, and then as we were talking about Vizinha, the Cape Verde goalkeeper, did we already give all this information?
B
No, we haven't. We haven't. Yeah.
A
Okay. He. I mean, okay, y'. All. Cape Verde is in their first ever World cup ever, and they have to play in their first ever World Cup. Spain, the European champions, who are a World cup favorite and are so good, they draw them nil. Nil. Cape Verde. I putting on my Cape Verde for. For Beithy. I'm like, let's go.
B
So good.
A
How. How? That was insane. In Vizinia.
B
Their goalkeeper who stood on his head.
A
Yeah. Which.
B
Julie. Do you know what that means? Because I tried to explain it to Glennon yesterday when I was talking to her about it. I was like, he stood on his head. She's like, what does that mean?
A
What does that mean? I love when she's so literal.
B
Yeah, I was like, I actually don't know. I guess, like he was saving things while also being on his head.
A
I feel like it's kind of like referencing a magician, maybe.
B
I don't know.
A
That's a great question. I'm going to GTS.
B
That 40 years old goes from Jules. I don't know if you know this, but he went from 50,000 followers before the game to 2 million right after the game. And now, do you want to know what his total Instagram followers. What is it, 11.7 million. Their population is. Is half a million total.
A
Oh, my gosh. That's insane.
B
It's amazing. He's not even signed to a club right now. He's just like, I'm gonna just go, World Cup. I'm World cup bound.
A
Oh, my gosh.
B
Oh, okay. So we're. We're. I'm just getting an update, folks. His. Now his total has. Has risen. His total is climbing to 12.3 million. Like this. It just keeps going.
A
He gained another half million. Ten minutes. We were, you know, talking. That's crazy.
B
That's wild.
A
I know. He doesn't even know, as you said, where he's going to be playing next. Well, someone's going to sign him. Okay. I also. I do love the Norwegians, you know, rowing up escalators, all of that. Yes.
B
But they're also rowing in the stadium. Did you see that? The entirety of, like, the whole stadium, they're just going to. And I don't know. Actually, Jules, I don't know if you know this, but I think that I was Viking in a former life because I'm obsessed with all of the Viking shows. I've watched all of them. The Last Kingdom, all of the seasons of the Vikings. You name it, I watch it. And I just. I'm like, I love. I love me some Vikings. There's just something about them.
A
Did you see also a last thing on this because of my Scotland algorithm. Did you see them all? They went to Fenway park, and they were all singing at the Red Sox
B
game, and I didn't see it.
A
And all of the announcers were like, again, like, do not let them leave the whole stadium. It was. It was just so rad. I love all this. It gives me, like, goofy goosebumps when I'm watching it all.
B
So good.
A
Exactly what I wanted. Let's go, United States. It's so good. Let's go, boys.
B
We get a win if we get a Win on Friday, we go through for sure. And that, for me, feels like a. A big, fresh breath of air. Because if we are. If we can get to go through, then we might be able to give Pulisic a little bit of a rest for that third game.
A
Yeah.
B
Which would make me sad.
A
And then we play. And then we play chicken. And then we play chicken on.
B
We play chicken on the 25th. Yeah.
A
For the last game. Okay. As promised. Party people, we have a question from party person Kelsey. Yes, Kelsey, thank you so much. Here is Kelsey's question. High party animals. That's cute. I was curious if you could make a T shirt that says Billie Jean King is my queen. I think that's a great idea. I would really like to buy one and wear it everywhere. Yes, Kelsey. She says thanks. And I love your podcast.
B
I mean, we've got a. We've got to decide. Yes, that's a. That's a. That's a. Yes.
A
Billy G is my. My queen. Here's the good news, Kelsey. We finally. It took us six months, but we got there. We have launched our merch line.
B
Yes. Welcome to the Party has merch. It's. And it's really good. You know, I'm gotta get. I gotta give some credit to Julie, who really took this one.
A
No, it was a team effort in a big way. But I do love that we got some hats kind of like this. Yeah, not exactly like this, but some oohsa hats. We've got sweatshirts. We're gonna add the shirt that Kelsey just. Billie Jean King is my queen.
B
We've got T shirts. We've got sweatshirts. We've got bags. And. And folks, you just have to go to welcome to the party.voila store. We will include it in the show notes, so don't freak out, but just go to welcometotheparty.v o I l a dot s t o R E. All

B
And before we end, before we end, I just want everybody to do every single thing they did prior to the last game. Repeat it. That is what I will be doing. I will be wearing my own jersey to my workout class. It is embarrassing, but I'm taking one for the team.
A
What did you actually watch the game in? Oh, you were at the back. You were at the baccalaureate.
B
Yeah, so I was in like, the first few minutes for the, like, second. The last 10 minutes, I was in my.
A
You're like, nice clothes to be.
B
No, but then I changed in. Amigos, you can't change. You. You can't. And I was like, it's fine. So I changed into USA gear.
A
