I have something brand new for you today. I have started a new storytelling podcast! The new show is called Did I Hear That Right? And I’m co-hosting it with my friend Glenn. For this new podcast, each episode we’re gonna have a guest come on and tell the story of something they’ve done, that most other people have never done. And these stories are all crazy, and they’re fun to listen to. No traumatic stories like animal attacks, nothing like that. And these are shorter episodes too – usually around 20 minutes or so. I’m doing this with my friend Glenn Hebert. He has a LONG history of podcasting. He started the Horse Radio Network, and has hosted the daily morning show called Horses in the Morning – for more than 4000 episodes. I’ve known Glenn for a long time and I know we’re gonna have fun with this show. And I want you to know, the new podcast will have no effect on What Was That Like. That’s my main show, and it will continue with those stories of real people in unreal situations, just like it has since it started 8 years ago. And right now, I’m gonna play you the first episode of Did I Hear That Right? So you can get a feel for what it’s like. Then I’ll be back here to wrap it up after. Learn more about your ad choices. I want to tell you about my friend Larry. Larry is pretty well known in the podcast world as a content creator, a consultant, and a subject matter expert for journalists. I’ve seen lots of times where he’s appeared on local and national TV shows, talking about podcasting as well as AI – he’s been on the forefront of how to use AI for personal and business productivity. And he’s been a sought-after keynote speaker at lots of organizations where he talks about these things. A few years ago, Larry and I were in Los Angeles during a podcasting conference. One evening during that week there was a big podcast awards show, and there was an after party. I don’t usually go to those things, but for some reason I was there. It was a private party but lots of people were there and it was on a rooftop bar, I don’t even remember the name of it. Of course the music was loud, and you would never guess who the DJ was – Paris Hilton. It was pretty crazy. And of course I would see Larry every year in January in Orlando, at the conference called Podfest. But this past January I didn’t see Larry. I didn’t know why he wasn’t there, and honestly I didn’t think about it a lot. It’s always a busy week and there are a couple thousand people there. But what I didn’t know was that Larry was in rehab at that time. He was trying to overcome Alcohol Use Disorder. Maybe better known as alcoholism. Larry’s life is very different now. His addiction to alcohol means he no longer has his business, his house, his cars, his wife – all gone. He’s working on his comeback now, and he told me the whole story which you’re about to hear. I also need to include a content warning for discussion of suicide. What Larry didn’t know at the time was - when he missed that Orlando conference because of being in rehab – he had not yet reached his rock bottom. One of my favorite movies is Twelve Angry Men. The original was made in 1957 starring Henry Fonda, then it was remade for TV in 1997 starring Jack Lemmon. It’s a true-crime courtroom drama, but most of the action takes place in the jury deliberation room for a murder trial. I think both versions are pretty good. But we know how Hollywood likes to play up the drama and the theatrics, and what we see on the screen is entertaining, but not always very accurate. Wouldn’t it be interesting to know what it’s like to actually be on a jury for a murder trial? That’s what my guest today, Jami, is going to talk about. She was actually the jury foreman. Jami told this story here on the podcast about 4 years ago, and it was a really popular episode. She’s a great storyteller and I think you’ll enjoy hearing all the behind-the-scenes details about being on a jury for a major case – and how this experience inspired her to start her OWN true crime podcast. I’ve never had an injury that was serious enough to be what I would think of as “life changing” but some people have. It’s a pretty deep idea to think about. I came across this post online recently. Here’s what this woman wrote: I experienced a life changing injury 6 months ago, which has left me very physically disabled and in excruciating pain 24/7. I am waiting for scans in the next month, after being refused medical care in the country where I was injured, but it is likely there is very little to be done to fix this. I am also trying physical therapy to get better, but so far with no results and just increased pain. The situation is making me severely depressed, and I really need to find some acceptance for what happened, and my life moving forward. I am in therapy already for some other stuff, but not able to come to acceptance for this injury yet. I'm stuck feeling despair and anger, and like I'm only a burden for the people around me, including my partner. I can't work, nor participate in fun activities that requires anything other than sitting, and even that I cannot do for long. I can't go for walks, sex is painful, almost all my hobbies are no longer possible. I barely sleep because of the pain, so I'm always sleep deprived as well. I have to be medicated for pain through the day and night to even be able to talk or move. If I try to skip a day, I cannot function. I really would like to feel that life is worth living even with chronic severe pain and physical disabilities I never imagined having to deal with. I spend so much energy and tears on feeling upset about the situation, and it's interfering with me at least feeling as okay as I possibly can. I need to find radical acceptance, but I feel so heart broken when I try. I don't know what to do. I can just hear the despair in her words. She wrote that in an online forum 5 years ago, so I would love to know how she’s doing today. But I don’t. My guest today is Patrick, and he knows what it’s like to have an accident that results in a life-changing injury. He was young and athletic, and he loved to go surfing and run ultramarathons. But then one day he broke his neck, and he had no idea what the rest of his life was going to look like. This is Scott, host of the show. On most episodes of What Was That Like, we talk to a regular person who has been through something extremely unusual – like a rattlesnake bite, a plane crash, a housefire rescue – we have more than 250 episodes with those kinds of stories. Today’s episode has several incredible stories, but it’s a little different. You may have heard me talk about the Raw Audio episodes. These are exclusive, bonus episodes that are only available to listeners who support the show. In the Raw Audio episodes, we typically have 3 stories of something crazy that happened, and we also hear the actual 911 call that took place during that incident. So today, I wanted to give you an idea of what these Raw Audio episodes sound like. And there’s another benefit of being a supporter – you get ALL of the What Was That Like episodes, including the Tuesday Question episodes, without any ads. Just pure content. After today’s stories, I’ll tell you how you can sign up to be a supporter, if you want to. And if not, that’s okay too. I hope you enjoy this episode. Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Do you remember the TV show called Locked Up Abroad? It’s no longer in active production, but you can still see past seasons on some different platforms like Hulu and Apple TV. Every episode of the show was a true story of someone who was traveling outside their own country. Actually I seem to recall that most of the people were Americans traveling outside the US. And they would make a really bad decision to do something like trying to smuggle drugs or other illegal things into this other country. And of course they would get caught, and now they’re arrested and in jail in a place where they don’t really know the rules or procedures, and there might not even be anyone there who speaks English. It’s a true nightmare scenario. My guest today is Emily. She has personally been through that type of experience, and she told that story here on the podcast 5 years ago. She was the one who tried to get through airport security, while having bags of cocaine taped to her body. That was not a good day for Emily. But wait til you hear what she’s done with her life since then.
