Katie Dayton
Here's your TMB Tech minute for Tuesday, July 1st. I'm Katie Dayton for the Wall Street Journal. The U.S. senate passed President Trump's tax and spending mega bill this afternoon following a vote to remove a provision that would ban state laws that regulate artificial intelligence. House Republicans had proposed a 10 year moratorium on state AI regulations, hoping to prevent a patchwork of rules across the country. But some lawmakers said the initial language was too broad and would prevent states from legislating in other areas, like child online safety. Trump's big beautiful bill, meanwhile, appeared to reignite his feud with Elon Musk. The two sparred on their respective social media platforms X and Truth Social, with Musk accusing Congress of voting for the, quote, biggest debt increase in history. Trump, meanwhile, told reporters that Musk was upset the legislation ends federal subsidies for electric vehicles such as those made by Tesla, and he said he might look at deporting Musk, who was born in South Africa. Elsewhere, Amazon has hit a new operational milestone, deploying more than 1 million robots in its warehouses. That means the company is now on the cusp of using more robots in its facilities than humans. It comes after Amazon spent years automating tasks like picking items off shelves and ferrying them for packaging. The growing automation has helped Amazon improve productivity while easing pressure on the company to solve problems such as heavy staff turnover at its fulfillment centers. WSJ Tech News Briefing: TNB Tech Minute – AI Regulation Left to States After Senate Megabill Vote
Release Date: July 1, 2025
Host: Katie Dayton, The Wall Street Journal
At 00:31, Katie Dayton reports that the U.S. Senate has successfully passed President Donald Trump’s expansive tax and spending bill. A significant aspect of this legislation was the removal of a provision that would have prohibited state-level regulations on artificial intelligence (AI). This decision leaves the governance of AI largely in the hands of individual states, potentially leading to a diverse and fragmented regulatory landscape across the nation.
“House Republicans had proposed a 10 year moratorium on state AI regulations, hoping to prevent a patchwork of rules across the country,” Dayton explains (00:31).
House Republicans initially proposed a decade-long pause on state AI regulations to maintain a unified national approach and avoid inconsistencies that could arise from varying state laws. However, this broad language faced criticism from some lawmakers who argued that it was overly restrictive.
“Some lawmakers said the initial language was too broad and would prevent states from legislating in other areas, like child online safety,” Dayton adds (00:45).
This feedback suggests a tension between maintaining regulatory consistency and allowing states the flexibility to address specific local concerns, such as protecting children in the digital realm.
The passage of the mega bill has reignited the long-standing feud between President Trump and CEO Elon Musk. Both figures took to their respective social media platforms—X (formerly Twitter) and Truth Social—to voice their criticisms.
Elon Musk accused Congress of approving the, “biggest debt increase in history,” reflecting his concerns over national fiscal policy (01:10).
In response, President Trump criticized Musk, linking the legislation to the cessation of federal subsidies for electric vehicles produced by Tesla.
Trump stated, “Musk is upset the legislation ends federal subsidies for electric vehicles such as those made by Tesla, and he said he might look at deporting Musk, who was born in South Africa,” (01:30).
This exchange highlights the broader political and economic tensions surrounding technology and innovation policies.
Shifting focus to the private sector, Dayton reports that Amazon has achieved a significant operational milestone by deploying more than 1 million robots in its warehouses. This development signifies that Amazon is nearing a point where robots outnumber human workers in its facilities.
“Amazon has hit a new operational milestone, deploying more than 1 million robots in its warehouses,” she notes (01:50).
The extensive automation includes tasks such as selecting items off shelves and transporting them for packaging. This shift towards automation has yielded multiple benefits for Amazon:
Increased Productivity: Robots enhance efficiency by speeding up processes and reducing the time taken to fulfill orders.
Mitigated Staffing Issues: Automation alleviates the challenges associated with high staff turnover rates in fulfillment centers, ensuring more consistent operations.
“The growing automation has helped Amazon improve productivity while easing pressure on the company to solve problems such as heavy staff turnover at its fulfillment centers,” Dayton explains (02:10).
This move by Amazon exemplifies the broader trend of automation in the tech industry, balancing technological advancement with workforce management.
For listeners interested in a more comprehensive exploration of these topics and other developments in the tech world, Dayton encourages tuning into the upcoming Wednesday’s Tech News Briefing podcast.
“For a deeper dive into what's happening in tech, check out Wednesday's Tech News Briefing podcast,” she concludes (02:30).
