Here's your afternoon TNB Tech minute for Wednesday, April 8th. I'm Julie Chang for the Wall Street Journal. Meta announced a new large language model today. Musespark is the tech giant's first major AI model in over a year. The rollout comes at a critical moment for Meta, which has spent billions of dollars in AI talent to catch up to OpenAI, Anthropic and Google's DeepMind. Muse Spark is a closed model, a departure from Meta's previous mod models, which were open source. It'll power Meta's AI chatbot and AI features within it. Anthropic has launched Project Glasswing, a joint AI security effort with major tech and cybersecurity firms including CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Microsoft, Apple, Google and more. The partners will use the unreleased Claude Methos preview model for defensive cybersecurity work. Anthropic will share its findings on the model's implication within 90 days. The company is advocating for industry wide safety standards and is discussing the model's cyber capabilities with U.S. government officials. And TikTok is investing $1.16 billion in a second data center in Finland as part of its Project Clover initiative to localize European data. This move addresses regulatory scrutiny over how the Chinese owned company handles user data to reassure authorities. TikTok is moving European data storage locally under tighter controls, hiring cybersecurity company NCC Group to audit data controls and monitor data flows. This follows a separate agreement TikTok reached with the US in January in which Oracle oversees data for American users. And that's your TMB Tech minutes. Check back in the morning for another quick tech update.
