Here's your morning TNB Tech minute for Tuesday, September 9th. I'm Julie Chang for the Wall Street Journal. We exclusively report that OpenAI executives are worried that political scrutiny in California could derail its for profit plans and have discussed discussed potentially moving it out of the state. OpenAI is controlled by a nonprofit, but it's been trying to transition to a for profit company. Now some state nonprofits and labor groups have asked California's attorney general to investigate if OpenAI's restructuring violates charitable trust law. An OpenAI spokesman said the company has no plans to leave California. Plus, Volkswagen will invest up to 1 billion euros, or about $1.18 billion, to expand its artificial intellig capabilities by 2030. The auto group said that the investment will focus on AI supported vehicle development, industrial applications and IT infrastructure expansion. Volkswagen said AI integration could save up to 4 billion euros by 2035. The carmaker currently uses more than 1200 AI applications throughout the group, with several hundred more in development or nearing implementation. Finally, Mistral AI has doubled in valuation, reaching $14 billion, following a roughly $1.5 billion investment from Dutch chip equipment giant ASML. The investment gives ASML an 11% stake in the French startup. Mistral aims to develop AI models and data centers independent from American competitors, but its funding and valuation trails its Silicon Valley rivals. The investment highlights Europe's push for homegrown AI amid tensions with the US over trade and tech policy. That's your TNB Tech Minute. Join us again this afternoon for more.
