It's not overlooking A and M should beat Arizona state at home 10 times out of 10.

I agree. But you know what? He did. So first of all, Kenny Dillingham has proven himself to be a really good coach. Put a good competitive team on the field.

[Obi]

Now, the players can't overlook.

Right.

[Obi]

But like do. Am I guaranteeing a win there? Absolutely not. I've even talked about they had a great transfer portal class. Kenny Dillingham, as you mentioned a moment ago, is great. Like I'm just saying, if we're going to be. If there's games that we're going to have questions about. My questions about the Arizona State game are significantly less than going to Tuscaloosa.

[David]

Okay.

[Obi]

Okay. That does not mean that you can't lose the Arizona State game or the Kentucky game can. What we me overlooking anybody.

[David]

Doesn't matter.

But we should give them respect.

And I. And I give them respect. We at this chair, we have seen too many games where A and M should run away with it either lose or come close to losing.

Yeah. And then also to his point, though, it's 11 o' clock game. And I've always said, and I still believe this early kickoff favors the visitor.

But for them, Arizona, they're either.

[David]

I think Phoenix is. Might be Mountain time. Okay, might be. I could be wrong. I'm going to find out in about two days.

There's certain parts of. Can you guys Google this?

I think he gets out to Yuma, Arizona, which is almost on the California border. Obviously, that specific time. I think when you get, you know, when you. I've done this. When you drive to Las Vegas and you're crossing over Hoover Dam from Kingman. I think not Kingman. Anyway, the time zone changes.

[Obi]

Yeah. I think there's certain parts too that, like, aren't always Mountain time.

[David]

Sometimes I think Dryer has the answer.

But I. But again, I'm not overlooking them. I think A and M should win that game. I don't know if we're going to win. I'm going to predict this today.

By the way, Arizona State, you should go back to your traditional old uniforms with the maroon and gold. And you had the little guy look like on the devil ham logo on their helmet. Sparky with the pitchfork and it has a mustache. And now they just go to the, you know, pitchfork, and you're like, what is that?

[Obi]

How do you know? You're such into uniforms.

[David]

I am a. I'm a traditionalist.

So old school. The SEC was the better conference. And I would like for you to hear from Kirk Signetti, who I have a lot of respect for. He has made me a believer. Okay.

I am almost going to back out completely from SEC versus Big Ten talk because it is a losing argument no matter what, because they deserve all the scoreboard in the world, but I know that they're really, as a conference, all of a sudden. They. They feel like the SEC recently. And what I mean by that is forever. I looked at it when I was not covering A and M as on a daily beat. Okay. I looked at. When you're in the sec, it's the only conference in the world that everybody kind of wants the SEC to win. When A and M was in the Big 12, I wanted every team to lose. Right. But when you. When Part of the sec, I think, is, yes, the SEC won another championship. Yes, Alabama, yes, Georgia. I hate when they beat us, but yes, the Big Ten. I didn't think of them that way, but right now they're pounding their chest. Look how good we are as a 16 team. And I'm going to get into what Danny Canell said, but here's Church.

Canel hates the sec.

[Obi]

Yeah, yeah, he hates us. Not that I'm in the sec. Here is coach Kurt Signetti.

The Big Ten is the best league in football and a lot of really good football teams. It's hard to win on the road. Very, very physical football teams, very well coached. It definitely prepares you for the playoffs. There's no doubt about it. The numbers speak for themselves. I mean, we don't run a hype machine up here in the Midwest. We believe everything's earned, not given. And when we fall short, we say we fell short. We don't cry a river, whine and complain. All right? And that's why we're the best.

[Obi]

Okay, a couple of things to that he knew what he was doing. And there's a pause and a look in his eye like I got a one liner, come and lay it. So maybe I'm misunderstanding. Who's whining and crying? I mean, you can say the sec. Oh, we have a harder schedule. I think it's. I don't think I told this to Aaron towards yesterday. I don't think Maryland is beating a nine win team from the Big Ten. I don't think Maryland is beating Michigan. I just don't. Florida beat Texas last year. I just don't think that happens in the Big Ten. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's almost not worth the battle because you know what? All right, you guys won the national championship.

[David]

[Obi]

It's over.

Look, I'll say this again. I believe that top to bottom, the SEC is a stronger conference. I still believe that. But also for a decade, SEC teams, the sec, you know, were up in people's face.

[Obi]

Ah, we're better than you.

Sec, sec, sec.

And you, the SEC gloated, crowed, bragged, used all those to everybody. And since then, now the Big Ten's won three in a row. So they, the victor goes to spoils. They get to talk. And if you don't like the way they're talking, then do something to shut their mouth. Yeah, but hey, Signetta, you still. I think the SEC won seven in a row at one time. You still got four more to go.

[Obi]

Yeah, well, let me ask you this. Let's see who's the first ranked team that they're going to play this year. Let's just kind of go see Indiana.

[David]

Indiana.

[Obi]

Okay, I'm just. Because I think there's some. Something to be said. They start off with North Texas. They get Howard, Western Kentucky, Northwestern, Rutgers, Nebraska, maybe Nebraska's maybe, maybe.

[David]

So we're every year we're told, oh, now this is going to be the year that Nebraska is going to be back.

[Obi]

So we're at mid season and they haven't played, in my opinion, anybody.

[David]

Right?

[Obi]

Then they get Ohio State. It's a big game. They get Michigan. That's a big game. It's a big.

[David]

I'll give them that. It's not hard, boss.

[Obi]

Michigan, but okay, it's a big game. Indiana then takes on Minnesota. Sorry, that's not a game.

[David]

Sometimes Minnesota, every now and then they're rowing their boat and they get pretty good for a while, but typically always falter back. That mediocrity.

[Obi]

Okay, I can say the same thing about Arkansas every once in a while. Okay, it's been a while, but every once in a while, Arkansas, usc. I'll give them that one. Washington. And they end with Purdue. Sorry, like, and I'm not. And by the way, they deserve all the credit in the world because however they do it, it's working. Well.

[David]

He was talking about how hard it was to win on the road in the Big Ten. They beat Maryland 55 to 10 on the road. They beat Purdue 56 to 3 on the road. They had some close games to Iowa 20 to 15. I just think that they've had the best teams. Big 10 salute. You've had the best teams for three years. But to David's point, when you start getting a little bit, a little bit further down the ladder, the rungs are farther apart.

[Obi]

Well, this is what Danny Cannell says, and I know you're going to have a retort. Okay, Your boy, boy. And by the way, before we get to Canal, I'm sorry, isn't Signetti doing the hype machine there? Yeah, okay, he's doing the hype machine. So we don't have a hype machine in the Midwest. Except I'm doing a hype machine. I'm doing a, you know, a rap battle on stage right now.

[David]

But he also said, I'm a winner. I win. Google me.

[Obi]

And I've googled him. His resume's pretty good.

He hasn't updated his LinkedIn recently, but it's pretty good. Danny Cannell, boy, have the SEC harped on a nine game conference schedule like it's harder than any NFL schedule. The Big Ten's been sitting there thinking, we've been doing this already. What's the big deal?

[David]

Well, the big deal is, like we just said, there are more good teams in the sec. You could have made a really strong case for Texas and Vanderbilt getting in the playoff last year. Missouri wasn't that far off. Once you got past the three or four of the Big Ten, the bottom falls out because Michigan, usc, really the USC team that says, no, we're not going to play Notre Dame anymore because it's too hard. But Danny's always had an issue with the SEC because he's an ACC guy and he probably.

[Obi]

And it works on social media.

[David]

Florida probably beat the hell out of him. You know, look, he was a. And the SEC never said our schedules not game tougher than the NFL. You know, I know he's, he's exaggerating, but he sucked as a, as a quarterback.

[Obi]

I've used A and M in this example before. But pick Oklahoma, pick Texas and give them a. The Indiana schedule.

[David]

Well, they probably would have been very, very similar.

[Obi]

10 and 2. Ish.

[David]

Yeah, probably. I mean, Texas was 9 and 3. Yeah, I would say Indiana might have had a loss had they played in the sec because it's the, I always say it's the week to week grind. I'm looking at their schedule last year in the Old Dominion. Okay. Kennesaw State. Okay. Indiana State. And then they played Illinois. I bet on Illinois. I missed a three team playoff. I only missed it by about 53 points. Iowa. They beat Iowa. I know. I was number 17. Would you be scared of ever playing Iowa? No. No.

[Obi]

I mean scared. No, I mean, I respect them.

[David]

Yeah. They can't score.

[Obi]

You know, they could, they can definitely beat you.

But like Luke Evangelist in the singles bar, can't. They can't score. Michigan State's terrible. UCLA was God awful. You like that? I did.

[Obi]

I had to follow up, but I was like, not only here, Wisconsin.

[David]

Wisconsin. Well, I mean, I think Barry Alvarez. It's not even Brett beat on this.

Yeah. So let me ask you this, Obi. Here's just a question. And again, there are two different arguments happening here. The best team in the country, the Big Ten has produced the best team in the country three straight years. No argument. They deserve that. You get to talk now. It is called coping, what the SEC is doing. But the reality is it is a harder grind. Let me ask you, this is the worst three or four teams in the Big Ten from last year or the year before. Okay. And dryer, if you can look up the Big Ten standings from last year, just pick a few of them. Are they known for home field advantage? The way going to the Swamp is. Are they known for the home field advantage like going to Arkansas, like going to South Carolina?

[David]

Yeah. No.

No.

[Obi]

Okay.

I mean, who, who, who's afraid to go to Northwestern or.

[Obi]

I've never heard anybody mention that.

[David]

I've covered a game at Purdue when they were good. You know, you never really cared about Indiana until this year.

[Obi]

But they're not known for like it's, it's. They don't say, oh, man, winning on the road in the Big Ten is hard. I've never heard that statement.

[David]

Just don't venture into East Lansing. Michigan.

[Obi]

Yeah, you don't.

[David]

Now, I hear. I've never been there, but I hear Iowa City, Iowa is a great game day.

[Obi]

I'm sure there's great game day atmospheres in the ACC, the Big 12, the old Pac 12, the new Pac 12, whatever. I'm sure there's. But the SEC homer admitted all of them. Maybe not Missouri.

[David]

Vanderbilt and Missouri would rather be in the Big Ten.

[Obi]

Okay, so there's two.

[David]

And Vanderbilt may be different now that they're good. You know, when I lived there, they. Nobody from Vanderbilt, nobody from Tennessee went to Vanderbilt. You met somebody from Vanderbilt, they were from somewhere else.

[Obi]

Happy Valley. Incredible home field atmosphere once you get there. Ann Arbor, Incredible. Right. Ohio State.

[David]

Ann Arbor is a lot like Texas there. Yeah, there's a lot of them there. They just. They're not very. But into it.

[Obi]

But when we went to Texas in

November, playing A and M, I thought

[Obi]

that fourth quarter was pretty. It was legit. So I got to give them the credit for what I said when they're playing.

[David]

Okay. But I. Look, I covered Texas, I'm telling you. Yeah. It's a wine and cheese crowd.

[Obi]

Yeah. You have some of those bad teams in the. Sorry. I don't know why I left. Big Ten. Yeah. So Purdue was.09. They were last in the Big Ten last year. Is that good?

[David]

That's why they call them Perdaunt.

[Obi]

Who else? Maryland was pretty awesome. I've never heard anybody say the Terrapins like that. That place. Watch out. You never know unless they're playing Texas. This is a good point. Michigan State as well now. Michigan State during their day.

[David]

Yeah, I mean, Michigan State had been kind of like A and M. Yeah. Like, hey, they're going to jump up and have a Good year. But then they're going to slide right back down to where they were. And have they been good since Antonio retired? I don't know.

[Obi]

They haven't. Wisconsin. Wisconsin, during their run was very good, but they've been.

[David]

They've been bad the last four or five.

[Obi]

I would say it is. That's probably not an easy atmosphere, though, I would assume.

I know.

I don't know. I'm not ever going to get. Look, a bunch of, you know, people having a good time. Great. But going to Wisconsin, which I'd love to see a game at Camp Randall.

Yeah.

Too. But you know when your big thing about your team is, hey, they seem. Jump around.

One through eight seed, you'd have 50 win teams across.

Whoever LeBron was on. And the Celtics or whoever. The Miami Heat. Like, it was not a. So when LeBron. I'm sorry for making this LeBron thing. LeBron made all these Finals. His journey to the Finals. Credit for him getting there was not the same as what the spurs were going through, what a lot of the teams in the west were going through. True. When LeBron wins and the Celtics win and the Miami Heat win, they all deserve their credit. Not taking that away. But the journey that the seven seed or the four seed or the two seed in the west back then was significantly harder than the East. And sometimes the east won the whole thing. Just ask the Detroit Pistons when they beat the Lakers.

[David]

I think when the Dallas Mavericks won their championships.

[Obi]

Hardest run ever.

[David]

But weren't they like a.

[Obi]

They were six seed, I think sixth

[David]

seed or something like that. Yeah.

[Obi]

Maybe seven seed. Maybe they played Portland in the first round they played Los Angeles. They play Oklahoma City with Harden, Durant and Westbrook. And then they obviously played the Heatles.

[David]

Great. So we're a few days away from fall camp. You ready?

[David Olano]

Yeah, no, I'm itching. I think when I got here in January, the one thing I looked forward to the most was getting into fall camp again. The season started so excited now that, you know, we're almost a couple days away and excited for the group, too.

[Obi]

I'm sure you know this, but do you know how important you are? Like, look, special teams can make or break a season, man. So, I mean, not to put too much pressure on you, but we're expecting big things. Are you excited about that part of it?

[David Olano]

Yeah, no, I am. I think, you know, a reason I came here was to really step into that moment and kind of, you know, play in these environments and these type of atmosphere where, you know, being a kicker is important in the South. You know, every point matters, you know, in the first quarter, in the fourth quarter, whatever it is. So, yeah, no, I'm excited for it. I know there's a lot of talk about, you know, the kicking position and all that, but I think I'm confident with the guys that we have that we're going to go out there and perform and, and, you know, do our job as best we can.

[Obi]

Talk to me about the kicking room.

[David Olano]

Overall.

[Obi]

I mean, there's a lot of guys that have a lot of potential.

[David Olano]

Yeah, yeah. No, I think, I think this is probably the most talented group. I think I've been, been around from, you know, whoever's gonna start to who's backing up. You know, Tyler's obviously been here as a vet for a really long time and you know, me and him, you know, I've known him for such a long time and I've known he's, you know, he's always been elite, but since I got in here, it's really been like a huge step forward from when I've last seen him. And, you know, he's, he's, he's a master at his craft. He takes care of what he, what he needs to do. So excited for him. And then, you know, Shay with his snaps, I think it's, you know, as accurate as I've ever seen. You know, someone snap to me and he's a dog, so he'll be good. But then, you know, even, you know, if a man goes down, we have enough guys to, to back up with Alex, with Asher, with Gray Evans, all those guys, Boomer. So I think we're in a good shape there.

[Obi]

I'm sure you've answered this on this show before, but I don't know the answer. Why did you pick A and M? Beyond the pageantry of the south and the sec?

[David Olano]

Yeah, no, I think it was the relationships I kind of built with Elko and Doherty. That was the previous staff that I was in contact with when they were in Duke and I really did enjoy them. I thought they were like some of the best people in the world, aside from coaching. And when this opportunity obviously presented itself and I could rekindle my relationship with Coach Doherty, I think it was kind of a no brainer just because, you know, I respect the way he coaches special teams and he really has a good eye for it and knows what he's talking about and it's, you know, it's good to be a part of that room and have a coach like that that can help you.

[Obi]

You said one of the main things for you is spending time with the guys. So talk about that transition when you're the new guy. And by the way, in this new era of the Portal, like, there's a lot of new guys and not just you. So you guys kind of create your own fraternity. But how did you integrate yourself into that locker room?

[David Olano]

Yeah, no, I think. I mean, I'm coming in as a. Basically a one year guy. You know, I have one year left, maybe two, but like a one year guy coming.

[Obi]

Five and five, right?

[David Olano]

Five and five. So we'll see. But. But no, like, coming in as a one year guy in January. You know, I try to, you know, be as close as I can with the team, especially considering, you know, how late I came in and how much little time I got here just to build, you know, trust and confidence with those guys. But it's important, I think, to be around them and especially for a position like us when we're kind of, you know, an outside, you know, kind of factor to some people's eyes, it's really, you know, cool to be able to spend time with them and then obviously they appreciate you.

[Obi]

Well, you're telling me there's a big group that likes to play golf and you're part of that group?

[David Olano]

Yeah, no, there's. We call it. We. We call it the golf bug, and a lot of us caught it this summer. So we have a bunch of guys that are in a collective group chat. You know, one will book a tee time, he'll send it in the group chat, and then, you know, four will show up. So, yeah, it's been a lot of fun to play golf with those guys, to kind of step away from the facility and all.

[Obi]

Well, I do want to follow that up with a couple questions. First off, who's the best golfer that you've played with here at A and M?

[David Olano]

Is it you here? A and M? No, no. I mean, I play. I play well enough to enjoy it. If I probably were to say anyone that's like, you know, pretty good. Carter Bras, pretty good. He hits it. Yeah, he hits it pretty good. Will Harget is actually pretty good. I play with him, decently packs in land.

[Obi]

We have a good, good group of

[David Olano]

dudes that can really, you know, swing the stick.

[Obi]

So I would assume. And tell me if I'm wrong here. The mindset of a kicker and trying to nail a putt have got to be very. There's. There's the same kind of. Am I right? Is there some similarities there?

[David Olano]

Yeah. No. I mean, I think as a kicker and, you know, golfer, it's really. You're in that moment, it's you by yourself. And, you know, I have a saying like, you know, I've always used, like, your putter gets you paid, your driver gets you noticed, like putter, you know, short field goal, something like that. Like, that's really like, you know, if you go 45 and in and you can guarantee though it's like a five foot putt. That's really what separates a lot of teams is when you're able to go out there confidently and make a field goal like that. And like obviously the long balls, when you get a chance to keep go from 50 plus, like that's when sometimes they notice you and everything. So there's a lot of like similarities with, with golfing, kicking, but I think mentally it's, it's pretty much the same thing. Just you're orchestrating your own operation.

[Obi]

Take me through kind of your, your life, your childhood, how you got into football. How did.

[David Olano]

Yeah.

[Obi]

Where'd you grow up?

[David Olano]

Yeah, so I grew up. I was born and. Born and raised in. Or I was born in Miami, Florida, but I was raised in Boston, Massachusetts. We moved there in kindergarten and my whole life I'd played soccer. Really wasn't any family member that didn't play soccer. So that was kind of instilled into me since the day I was born. And I thought that's what I was going to do. We moved to Naperville, Illinois when I was going into my seventh grade year and then still played soccer.

[Obi]

Chicago's big for soccer too, right?

[David Olano]

They're pretty good. Yeah. My high school, I went to Naperville north was pretty successful actually winning state, you know, three out of four times in the last five years. When I got there, it was like,

[Obi]

it was pretty cool.

[David Olano]

And played soccer my whole life. And then up until my sophomore year, I kind of didn't want to play anymore. I kind of started falling out of love with it. It was shocking news to my parents, obviously, both of them being Latinos and.

[Obi]

Yeah, they're Colombian, right?

[David Olano]

Yeah, Colombian. So. But no, they were like phenomenal. They were just so supportive of me. We kind of just put all the chips in one basket and kind of, you know, sacrifice vacations, all that stuff so I can go to kicking camps because I jumped on the boat late and you know, I quickly found out that I was, that could be something I could do in college. So I thought that was a pretty cool idea. And yeah, I joined the football team kind of with my best friends kind of telling me to. I wasn't gifted enough to go play baseball or basketball because that's a varsity cut sport. But football was no cut. So I originally started as a wideout and kind of made my way into kicking.

[Obi]

So, you know who's a really good soccer player on your roster? On a And M. Colton Schmeller. Yeah, yeah, he played at Consol with my sons and he's. He's pretty elite athlete.

[David Olano]

Yeah, he's. I was gonna say you stole that. He's super athletic for being. Being kicker. I mean, he throws catches, does everything like. And you're like, holy crap, this guy, you know, kicks football. But, you know, kind of breaks the stereotype of it.

[Obi]

So I'm assuming for the World cup you were plugged into Columbia and US Team?

[David Olano]

I was, yeah, I was watching, but I was mostly watching Colombia and my parents were like, yeah, just huge, huge fans. Like every game they would have a bunch of people over to the house, watch games and, you know, I was obviously tapped into them, but obviously disappointed with the way that we went out in penalties. But alright, it's done.

[Obi]

So what about Texas A and M? How good can this team be? You see it from a different perspective. What do you see?

[David Olano]

Yeah, no, I think, you know, the sky's the limit. I think for this team, the way I've seen the guys work, not only in my group, but in the whole team, in the weight room, on the field, in OTAs. I think everyone kind of knows that, you know, we can be special. We have pieces for it, we have the staff for it. All we have to do is kind of focus in on it and make sure we all do our 1 11th when we're out there. And I think we could really do something really cool this year.

[Obi]

Have you gotten to get a relationship with Marcel and what have you seen from him?

[David Olano]

Yeah, no, I have. He was actually one of the first dudes I got pretty comfortable with just hanging out with and being able to talk to. I think he's done a tremendous job in the locker room, kind of bringing everyone together. And obviously, you know, at times when I do see practice, he has a good voice in the offense. It's loud and he's respected in our team and I think the relationship I can get with him, I think it only helps us out so much because, you know, I want him to trust me, you know, when they get off the field that we can go out there and score three points. So it's been a blessing to get to know one of those guys and, you know, he's been great for our team.

[Obi]

My favorite stop every year and I'm not just saying that.

I was just weird to be I was like, man, we're not going to see him as much in College Station. Well, maybe A M will warrant that. And yeah, hey, playoffs.

[Jordan Rogers]

I'll say don't sell yourself short.

[Obi]

We'll be there.

[Roy]

That is the big question is can A and M get back? That's one of the big ones. I feel like we could say that about. I feel like there's about a half dozen teams that are on that playoff or not line.

[Jordan Rogers]

I put, I put five teams in a category of like these teams have rosters to compete for a national championship. A&M's obviously one of those. When I, when I would look at A and M and I did a deep dive on Marcel Reid the last Couple weeks. His only issues are between the ears. I don't mean that he's. He's physically as gifted as anybody. I mean he is an unbelievable athlete. I think he has improved as a passer as well when he needs to be. I start to diagnose his interceptions and especially in the red zone. Last year he had five interceptions from the 21 yard. Two of them are at the 21 yard line. So I count that as a red zone. Three of them were to defenders not in primary coverage. And you see that come up in his multi multiple interception games as well. Why staring things down. Yeah, so he just between the ears. He needs to start to process and move on from things a little bit better. And you do that as the longer you're in a system and the more comfortable you get, the more that occurs. But I don't look at his game and go, man, he's got to change X, Y and Z. He's got to do it's just. And get off that route. If you move on there, you're fine.

[David]

Yeah.

[Jordan Rogers]

And you'd rather have that than oh man, he's got to fix his motion or man, he can't make this throw or he's not an athlete. How do we do. He's got everything you need between the ears. If he takes a step, it's gonna be a really good football team.

[Roy]

You're thinking of Miami, LSU and Texas as those three that were picked off.

[Jordan Rogers]

Yeah.

[Roy]

By the non primary.

[Obi]

Yeah.

[Roy]

In big moments against Florida and. Yeah, yeah. I mean it.

[Jordan Rogers]

And one of the goal line against. Who was that again?

[Roy]

South Carolina was one of the end zone too.

[Jordan Rogers]

Yeah, there was. Yeah, yeah.

[Roy]

I was going to ask you this, like I heard him say this. I've heard this a lot during the off season and they're talking about getting him outside the pocket. How do you feel about that in terms of. Of maybe taking a little of the pressure off of him, putting more of

[David]

it on the defense.

[Jordan Rogers]

It's not something you major in.

[David]

Right.

[Jordan Rogers]

I mean you do that three to five times a game. But I will say it, it does two things. It clears the picture for a quarterback. It allows him to be a dual threat immediately. So as soon as you do that, as soon as you put that on tape, defensive coaches hate it because now you get a rep. You got to rep some version of that in every period you have on defense, whether they did it 15 times or three times. So it benefits the quarterback because it's going to get him in an area where the picture's Clear. I got two options or I run, which I love for him. You're not going to major in it, but if you mix in some of that. Yes. I think you clear up the picture. You get him confident that between the ears stuff maybe isn't as much of an issue as opposed to making him go 1, 2, 3, 4. You know, sometimes the more you can take some of those off his plate, the better everybody's going to be.

[Obi]

How much of his issues at the end of the year last year were due to the fact that they couldn't run the ball as they did earlier on.

[Jordan Rogers]

Doesn't help. Doesn't help at all. Yeah. And I mean, offensive line wise, you guys know better than me. Like, that group is going to be so important.

[Roy]

Yeah.

[Jordan Rogers]

Because of who they're missing. Not just for Marcel, because his ability to run scares teams from pressuring them a little bit. They got to be able to run the football to open up those explosive plays, especially without K.C. you know, they got Mario and Ashton. I mean, they're going to be dynamic. And then Isaiah Horton was one of my favorite pickups because they need that body type. They need that body type because again, that's another thing that changes how defenses play you. And the best thing, full circle here, quarterback processing. The reason he's staring things down is because he's unsure about the coverage. Having a guy that's a big body X dictates coverage pre snap because immediately get your eyes on the boundary safety because are they shading or are they not shading? It's going to tell you, are they helping or are they not helping? Zoner man, boom. Right away.

[David]

Right?

[Jordan Rogers]

So you start to. Okay, now. Okay, now. I had a better idea. Pre snap, I know where my eyes should be. Post snap now he's going to start processing better. It just takes one guy to dictate. It forces the defense to have to show something pre snap at least a few times. Not every time, but those are the things that are going to help him be a better processor and play better. Post snap.

[Roy]

Is there a quarterback, Jordan, that when you're doing these deep dives this summer, that. Is there one in particular that you go, man, I really like what I thought I was going to see versus what I saw. I came out of that a lot more impressed than I thought I was going to be. Is there anybody in the league that did that to you? Obviously, yeah.

[Obi]

Yeah.

[Jordan Rogers]

I think I had more of the opposite. And maybe in a way, let me take for example, Sam Levitt.

[David]

Okay.

[Jordan Rogers]

Watched him as much as probably anybody else at Arizona State a little bit more, you know, watching the coaches tape, I found myself watching his tape going. He is always late throwing the football and I'm like, that's a problem.

[Roy]

Yeah.

[Jordan Rogers]

And then I start to continue to dive down. It's like he's not super accurate pushing the ball downfield. That's a problem in Lane's system. He was actually like 28 on throws at 20 plus downfield, which is one of the worst in the country. And Trinidad was top 15 in the country. But then when you really look at the offense, all they do is freaking streak reads and forwards and I'm like, can the guy get an easy layup throw ever? So I kind of started to understand how this fit for him with LSU is going to help him be a better deep ball thrower. More layups, cuz he's able to change arm angles, he's athletic. The quick game stuff, when they actually gave it to him, he was really good. And I'm just going, what are we doing? Why are we trying to play action? Throw the ball deep every time. So I think he's a guy that I watched film and I went o. It didn't look as good as I. I wanted it to, but man, I think he's going to be so much better in Kiffin's system. So I, on one hand I'm like, oh. And the other hand I'm like, no, okay. He's going to look so much better because of what they're going to allow him to do.

[David Olano]

Wow.

[Obi]

With Trinidad Chambers, what stood out when you're watching the film, when it got, when the lights got the brightest, he seemed to turn it on.

[Jordan Rogers]

Oh yeah. I mean, I think he's best quarterback in the country. What I love about him and his game is you see the highlights from the Georgia game and he's scrambling around looking like Johnny and like. And you love that in the quarterback. But if they're not able to also play on time and in rhythm,

[Roy]

Cool.

[David]

Yeah.

[Jordan Rogers]

You're gonna win a couple games by doing that, but you're not gonna be consistent.

[Roy]

Yeah.

[Jordan Rogers]

In the biggest moments against Miami down the stretch is he's getting them back in the game. His anticipation and timing on certain throws, those seam routes that he was squeezing in there, like his ability to put his foot in the ground and let it rip. For a guy that was in D2 last year, again, we get back to processing. That tells me he's processing so fast. If you're anticipating, you're ahead of it. You're processing so fast. So his ability to not just be a playmaker and scramble around, play backyard football, but play on time and be accurate and. And play with urgency and anticipate that surprised me. Because that's tough to do in big moments when, like, you're playing against, Geez, Miami. Oh, but I mean, last year at Ferris State, playing against. Who knows?

[Roy]

You know, that is.

[Jordan Rogers]

Johnny, Football's in not a good way.

[Roy]

It is crazy. It's like, that is one of the wildest. I don't. I don't think people realize it enough, because once you're in the heat of the season, we're all focused on everything that's going on.

[David]

That.

[Roy]

Is it like a Disney movie.

[Jordan Rogers]

He wasn't there in spring.

[David]

Yeah.

[Jordan Rogers]

He showed up in summer and. And Charlie Weiss Jr. Found him on Twitter.

[Roy]

I didn't know that.

[Jordan Rogers]

Like, one of those guys that just tweets out highlight films. He's like, oh, I got. I got 30 minutes. Let me just look at this kid

[Obi]

about processing because, yeah, Marcel, getting the reps is so important.

[David]

Yeah.

[Obi]

But do you either have it or don't? No. You can definitely.

[Jordan Rogers]

I think you can to some degree, yes. Right. I mean, to some degree. When the lights turn on, certain guys are better than they are in practice, and some guys aren't. But I don't see that in Marcel. I don't see that. I see him hanging and thinking when there's an easy answer out there. Not that he's not able to find it, because there are moments that he does do it right. But it's the moments that he. He hitches up twice in the pocket because he's hanging on something, and then that's when his feet get a little long and he air mails the ball and the safety behind picks it on an over route. Like, that's just one where you're like, I've seen you move on and hit that backside dig or check the ball down. It's not that you watch this film and you go, don't know if he can do it. It's consistently in big moments. That's why I brought up the red zone.

[David Olano]

Right.

[Jordan Rogers]

It's not all the time. It's those certain high pressure moments that maybe the pressure in those moments is getting to him and he's not reverting back to those coaching points and the times and the reps that he's done it right. And sometimes that takes just a couple big moments where he did do it right. And you build on that. And now that becomes your fallback as opposed to just trying to make a play or hanging on that one guy that you wanted to get the ball.

[Roy]

And I think you're talking about the difference between a return of the playoffs and not.

[Jordan Rogers]

Yes, oh 100.

[Roy]

And it's like you said, it's very attainable. And the other thing you said that I completely agree with, it's a lot of it's contingent on that offensive line

[Jordan Rogers]

and run and, and, and who they have to be.

[David Olano]

Yeah.

[Jordan Rogers]

Right. I mean can that offensive line come together to where you feel comfortable not needing to get him out of the pocket all the time, be able to mix in the quarterback runs and, and the pocket passer? Because I do believe he's. He's a good pocket passer. Like he shows flashes of. That was maybe the one thing that surprised me most in a good way watching him last year is how well in certain games he did operate just from the pocket.

[David Olano]

It.

[Jordan Rogers]

So he, he has that in him. But is the offensive line going to need him to be a little bit more of a weapon or they're going to need to change the launch point a little bit more?

[David Olano]

Yeah.
