15 words. Let me guess. Type, delete, and type again.

Pretty much.

I'm sure a lot of our friends know that feeling.

But once I had an argument with my French friend, and somehow my French just worked.

So, one time you stressed over a message, and another time you spoke well because you didn't care.

Yep. It's like the good version of empty head, full mouth. Maybe language learners need that more instead of head full, mouth on mute. That's what today's episode is about. Stop thinking, start speaking.

The Coffee Disaster

So, I have to tell you about a small coffee disaster I had.

Gwyn and disaster. That already sounds interesting. Go on.

A few years ago, I traveled to another country. At that time, I was learning the local language.

Oh, and you tried to use it during the trip.

Of course, I wanted to buy a coffee, so I went into a cafe.

Ordering coffee sounds simple.

That's what I thought. I practiced the sentence in my head about 10 times. I felt ready. Very confident.

I'm still waiting for the disaster.

Well, when it was my turn, everything went wrong.

You forgot the words.

No. Worse. I said all the words clearly, just in the wrong order. I basically said coffee by me.

Ah, so you didn't buy coffee. You offered yourself.

Exactly. I was very embarrassed, but the cafe staff was kind. He smiled and helped me order.

Or maybe you weren't the first person who tried to sell themselves for coffee.

Probably not, but his kindness helped me feel confident again.

Why Our Brains Shut Down: Fear & Perfectionism

I'm glad. But why does our brain shut down like that? That seems pretty common among language learners.

I thought about that, too. And I think there are two main reasons.

All right, tell me.

The first one is fear.

Fear of making mistakes.

Yes. And fear of people judging you or thinking you sound stupid.
