A busy summer of space travel came to a soft splashing end this week for astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley. It was the first splashdown by US astronauts in 45 years. As we descended through the atmosphere, the thrusters were firing almost continuously. And I think this the sound that makes, I did record some audio of it, but it doesn't sound like a machine, it sounds like an animal. The reentry is a fairly dynamic event and you can see from you know just an overall view of the capsule that reentry is a pretty demanding environment, you know with the different scorches on the vehicle and the windows were not spared any of that. The two rode a SpaceX Dragon capsule to the ISS and back, marking the first such journey aboard a privately built and owned craft in the space station's 20-year history. The mission's success means another SpaceX crew launch could happen as early as next month with possible tourist flights next year. Also this week from Cape Canaveral in Florida, NASA launched Perseverance, its most elaborate life-seeking Mars rover. Research scientist Dr Bethany Ehlmann explains the mission. We will be able to as before with rovers drive up to rocks, investigate them, figure out which ones are the most interesting. But this time we'll be able to then core a piece of that rock out into a sample about the size of a piece of chalk. Stony Brook University professor Scott McLennan says, to best study the samples collected by Perseverance, the rocks must land back on earth. They're the gift that keeps on giving because the samples will remain. Our ability to make measurements will evolve. They will get better and better over time. And we can always go back and revisit those samples that we've brought back to earth. Samples may hold clues as to whether life ever existed on the red planet. NASA and the European Space Agency will join forces to bring them back to earth around 2031.NASA和欧洲航天局将联手在2031年左右把它们带回地球。

The challenge is to treat everyone involved in that call neutrally and not have any predisposed thoughts or…我们面临的挑战是中立地对待电话中的每一个人,并且不要有任何先入为主的想法或……In her film Women In Blue, data official chronicles some of the challenges female police officers face as they help train fellow officers against excessive use of force in the male-dominated Minneapolis police department. Officer Alice White is one of the trainers. We interact with people who are rapists, murderers. It's sometimes hard to show respect to someone like that. So in my mind I had to switch this to professionalism. As long as you're being professional, you're gonna look respectful. The film echoes findings won as early as the 1970s by the National Police Foundation that female police officers act less aggressively and believe in using less aggression than their male counterparts. I just knew that I wanted to make a film exploring what women could bring in a very troubled time that our country has had with police violence. Hi, do you know why I'm stopping you? You can calm down. I see you're shaking. Just relax, relax, it's all good. You can see in that traffic stop that that man that was stopped by Alice had someone who was nurturing and had his well-being at the top and not some law enforcement. But the film also shows women remaining sidelined making up only 16 percent of the Minneapolis police department. 16%。The chief has selected no women for his executive team. I have a great deal of respect for chief Rondo. But the thing that hurt me the most was the fact that in a profession dominated by male voices, they're losing any female perspective. In Seattle, police chief Carmen Best says her department's recruitment ads are designed to attract more women to the force. We want to show more women. We want to show women in diverse positions. We want to make sure that it's not always car chases and gunfights and repelling off buildings. A lot of what we do has nothing to do with brawn, has a lot more to do with brain and skill sets and the ability to empathize and to work with people. It's not just that we need more women but we need a lot more women of color. I think that's where our police departments could potentially transform. <p style="color:#333333;font-weight:normal;font-size:16px;line-height:30px;font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;hyphens:auto;text-align:justify;" ...

You never know when at any second something might happen that you might need it. That's the point. It's not that you think it's going to. It's that you recognize the possibility that it can. You recognize the possibility that there are evil people in the world who do evil things and you have to be able to protect yourself against that. I think I'm an average gun owner because, I mean, I'm an average guy. I mean, there's nothing really special about me. From an early age, Dad would go out hunting, I went with him. You know, I was always in the woods with him shooting and you know, at the range shooting, and, you know, that's just, it was a way of life. We're going to the Minerva Sportsman's Club, a local range that I'm a member of. This is my AR-15 pistol, Hungarian AK-47, Marlin Model 60-22 rifle, Heritage Rough Rider, the U.S.-made rifle that's kind of a cross between an AK-47 and an AR-15, Spanish police pistol, SKS rifle, little Taurus TX-22, Ruger Mini-14. I own more than a dozen firearms and less than I want. Well, for several different reasons. Like any other tool, specific firearms are for specific purposes. I have rifles that are just simply, strictly for accuracy to try to put holes in a piece of paper far away. I have firearms for hunting. The majority of my firearms though are for defensive purposes. Over a period of years, that's what most people do. They get one here, then they get one there, then they get another one. Sometimes they tell their wife, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they just, 'Oh no, I've had that one for a while. Yeah, don't you remember I bought that back then?' That's right. So, this is Jason Spoon. He's a friend of mine and a firearms instructor. His family runs the local gun shop here in town. What'd you bring with us today? I brought a duty pistol and a Henry Golden Boy. Nice. Classic. I think between all of us, we have some pretty good representations of what kind of stuff people own around here. Alright, let's go get some targets. It's never been easy for fishermen in England's southwest to make a living, but now they face a competitor: around 200,000 octopuses, probably coming from the Mediterranean. Climate change is blamed for this migration, and the animals are apparently gobbling up the crab, lobster and other marine life which many fishermen depend on. A report published on Monday found octopuses spotted further north and in Wales, and said fishermen are having to adapt, hunting for the octopuses themselves. One market town recently saw 100 tonnes of octopus sold in a single day.

Around the world, summers are getting hotter. Day and night temperatures are increasing. What impact could that be having on how we sleep? Temperature and sleep are closely linked. Typically, our bodies cool themselves down before we sleep. One of the main ways that we do this is by widening blood vessels near the skin to allow heat to dissipate. In hot weather, this process becomes less effective as it is more difficult for heat to be transferred. One of the body's mechanisms to speed up this process is by allowing sweat to evaporate. However, in humid conditions it's harder for evaporation to take place. If the body is unable to cool down, then it's more difficult for people to fall asleep and more likely that sleep patterns can be disrupted. This means that it's important for us to try to manage the temperature of the environment that we sleep in. While it can be costly, air conditioning is a useful tool to keep our sleeping environment cool. Managing ventilation is also important. During the hottest hours of the day keeping windows and curtains closed can stop hot air and heat from sunlight entering our homes. At night, once the temperature has dropped, opening windows can allow cool air to come in and reduce the temperature in our homes. Fans can help to speed up cooling, as long as air temperatures are low enough. They become less effective in hotter conditions. It's not just rooms that we can cool down. Using breathable bedding and sleepwear makes it easier for our bodies to regulate temperature. While it may seem counter-intuitive, it can be beneficial to have a warm bath or shower before sleep. Warm water can cause more blood to flow to our skin. Once you get out of the bath or shower, this means that you cool down more quickly. Another tip suggested by sleep experts Kevin Morgan and Lisa Artis is to cool your socks in the fridge and then put them on before going to sleep. They also say that it's important to try to keep to your usual sleep routine to avoid disruption to your sleep habits.

So it's a 3D-printed cowl or helmet. It's like a mask basically but it's specifically designed and tailored to fit my face exactly. Because of that, it's kind of difficult to get on because it is a rigid, hard plastic. But the amount of time that it takes to make something like this is, and cost even is far superior than it would be to sculpting it, molding it, casting it. We are cosplayers. We are comic book nerds and fans of comic book culture and everything like that. So we are naturally inclined to craft things and creativity. That led me to a job at the Long Beach Public Library teaching 3D design and 3D printing, which led me to purchasing one, which I've used to make costumes and props and things like that for cosplay. We have a lot of friends in the medical field and stuff and just, "What can we do to help instead of just sitting at home watching Netflix?" although, if you are home, watching Netflix, great, do that. Stay there. This is what we've done in one week on two machines. With the masks, they are done in three pieces. There is the front nose part. There's the inside. There's like a shield and in between that is the four layers of MERV-13 filters. With COVID-19, everyone's, you know, needs help on the respirators or the ventilator machines. This is a way that two people can use one machine now. So, it splits off, kind of like, you know, back in the day, you had for Walkman and you could let two people could listen to it at the same time. So, two people can use one machine now. So, we're just basically going to the friends that we know, the people who are actually doing the jobs right now and just reaching out to them first because that's easier. There is a gray area and we talked about this before, where hospitals are not supposed to accept anything from a non-medical professional. However, they have been reaching out to other people because they just need anything rather than nothing. And that's why we are kind of trying to go out of our way to make sure that these things are able to withstand the processes that they would go through for sanitization. So, we've switched to these ones here, which are the high heat plastic. So, they'll melt at a much higher rate, higher temperature. They are a lot sturdier. They are going to last longer. They can withstand being sanitized over and over and over again. We have set up an Amazonwish list. So, whatever people buy on there, gets shipped directly and we are just using it. </spa...

This statue of the 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, who served from 1901 to 1909, depicts Roosevelt on horseback with a native American and a black man standing alongside him. To those who object to it, the statue suggests colonialism and white supremacy. It is one of a few statues around New York that protestors want removed, including one of Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus being pedestalized and lionized like that is similar to Roosevelt being on a high horse. And just like he needs to come down off his high horse, we need to take Columbus off of his pedestal, because he doesn't represent what this land was once representative of. This was the island of Manhattan. I think a lot of people are offended by this because it's sort of like you know, we act like we discovered this country first. There were humans living here for thousands of years, so we didn't discover anything, we took it. However, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, son of the late governor Mario Cuomo, who comes from a well-known New York Italian-American family wants the statue to stay. I understand the feelings about Christopher Columbus and some of his acts which nobody would support. But the statue has come to represent and signify appreciation for the Italian-American contribution to New York. So on that, for that reason I supported. New Yorkers themselves, however, feel conflicted on the removal of monuments like these. Any of them I don't care. If you're not for us, you are against us. Gotta go. Martin Luther King? We could put him on those. We can start over. Obama? We could start over. Take them all off. I mean, the way America was built regardless was wrong and we gotta start over again. I think this is an absolutely terrible decision. Having been born in the Soviet Union where statues and the history was rewritten, I am absolutely against these types of decisions. New York City being the size it is, there are many more statues that will come under the microscope. Should they stay? Or should they go? Even before current controversies, New York City's mayor and his wife have been looking at putting up more statues depicting women and people of color.

We felt we were completely empty. Go reserve tickets now and leave him standing there alone on the stage. What do you say? Call it the TikTok phenomenon. A call to action on the social network may have contributed to lower than expected turnout at a recent Trump rally. In Nashville, six teenagers organized a march against police brutality that drew a crowd of nearly 10,000. How did they get the word out? Instagram. Today's youth are speaking up using what they know best: social media. Instagram。 I think overall technology has really been a driving force for us, having those things that already connect us and then kind of trying to figure out how we can manipulate these things, how we can use them to our advantage. Here in New York City, Jessica Rosario and her peers have been busy rallying their community around online voter registration. We wanted to really create a space for digital democracy. Sharing resources and building online coalitions with other like-minded organizations are key. There's nothing better than coming together in a group and just really talking about what's necessary and then splitting up and creating those tools so that we could share it out to our communities. Digital activism isn't new but young people today are making more use of it. Rosario helped create digital toolkits that supporters could use to push for legislative action in the stateSenate. People could click on it and it would automatically open up their Twitter with like a pre-written tweet that we had created. And just in a second, you could send that. It tags the elected officials, telling them exactly what the legislation name is and why we were demanding it. Rosario believes the Twitter storm helped result in a section of New York's civil rights law being repealed. We created that in just a matter of I want to say hours to a day. Others are repurposing existing platforms like Twitch, a livestreaming site for gamers that recently has become a place to catch protests as they happen on the ground. For 21-year-old Rosario who falls squarely in the Gen Z demographic, they're still in appreciation for old-school technology. Text isn't always the best. If you have a lot to say, you want to hear people's emotions when you're like telling them news. I love phone calls way better than text messages. For these digital natives, getting everyone's attention is all about the online and offline connections.

For Rear Admiral (Sel.) Putnam Browne and his daughter Francesca, the Navy isn't just a career, it's the family business. I definitely think he has a major influence on me whether he meant to or not. But he taught me so much and I knew that it was the right choice for me because of him. Francesca attended the prestigious US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Like her father, she rode on a Navy crew team. When a sudden hip injury kept her from rowing, Francesca switched to steering a boat as a coxswain for the men's team, making them the team's first-ever father-daughter duo. That was another very cool transition because we had this, another shared kind of bond. Francesca sailed her Naval Academy cruise aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, the same ship her father commanded. So when coronavirus precautions prevented a big Navy graduation last month, Francesca had an idea. She asked if I would commission her and do it at the Lincoln Memorial since Lincoln means so much to our family. We were the only people there. It was I think 7 a.m.on kind of a rainy day and we stood right in front of Lincoln. My dad administered the oath of office. I definitely choked up, maybe a little bit. It was a very heartfelt culmination of events. The Navy wasn't such a clear-cut path for Lieutenant Commander Megan Isaac, whose dad is a retired Navy admiral. I had always thought I was gonna be a ballerina. That was my plan. But on September 11th of Issac's senior year of high school, her nation was attacked, and her father was stationed at the Pentagon. That day impacted me so much because someone who had been always a point of stability and assurance in my life, there was a question mark there for a few hours. And someone had done that, someone had attacked our country, and I felt for the first time in my life very compelled to do something about it. In the following days after 9/11, Issac's father watched with pride and surprise as his daughter applied to attend the Navy's top Academy. I don't think he believes that I would ever actually be in a navy Academy, and they essentially take all of your personal belongings away. They cut off your hair. I remember just thinking, did I just make the worst decision? What did I just do! And that I feel like it's captured very well in my fac...

So, here we have me graduating from the police academy. This is my chief at the time. Quite happy to have a gun and abadge. I was working on the bus. We used to wear plain clothes on the bus. And that's me with the general manager. I had just made sergeant. I remember being the only African-American female in that group of promotees. I remember the levels of competitiveness and the gratification that I was able to compete at that level and excel. My name is Tracie Simmons and I am a retired Deputy Chief of the Metro Transit Police Department. I served there for over 25 years in various capacities. I came up through the ranks and I retired at the rank of Deputy Chief. And I was the first African-American woman to reach that rank at my police agency. It was very intimidating for a young woman, especially a young black woman. I was in a highly, you know, Anglo workplace with majority male and it was challenging. You had to get in to fit in, to get along and really, you really still weren't a part of. Be clear. You know, in the police department, there wasrampantsexism, rampant racism. There were remarks made in roll calls that, you know, I wouldn't dare repeat. And as I was there, because I was there, I got to be a voice for things that needed to change and be different. There'll be a certain segment of racism because we come from those same communities. Police officers come from those same communities and they bring along with them their belief systems, their worldviews and their cultural experiences. I think it's come to a head. I think there's a lot of things that we get to see now because of technology that has occurred for many, many years. And that now it's kind of in our face. We all had an opportunity to see George Floyd, you know, be murdered right on television. I've never seen anything like it in my life and I don't think most Americans have. I think though, our country is in a breakdown and I think that around police brutality and law enforcement, I would tell the protesters that I support them wholeheartedly. I would tell them to be thoughtful and be aware that there are other stories and other spaces. That's just part of the story but it's not the real story. ...
