Welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace. This year, we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study, Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire biblical story, but the center of it. Hi, friends. Welcome back to another episode of this year's season of Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm a staff writer here at the Daily Grace Company and I'm joined with my co host, Beth.
A
Hello. So excited to dive into day two of prep week with you all.
B
We are here today to talk about another important element of prep, how to identify attributes of God. Yeah.
A
As we explained yesterday, each week there's going to be two days where you're going to be led through annotation prompts. These are going to allow you to really sit with and study the passages that are being covered that week. One of the annotation prompts each of those days is, where do you see Christ in the passage which we talked about yesterday, Another one is going to be, what attributes of God can you identify in this passage? So you might be wondering, what are attributes and what are attributes of God and why are they important?
B
God's attributes are essentially different aspects of God's character that are in God's nature. So God's attributes teach us who God is and help us to know God better.
A
Exactly, yeah. God's attributes help us to know him. And isn't that the goal of every single one of our lives, is to know God better? So then the question is, what are the specific attributes of God? Well, you can actually find a whole list of these in your study under prep week. We don't have time to cover every single one of them in depth, but we thought that it would be fun for us each to share two of God's attributes that that have particularly spoken to us over the years as we have been walking with God and studying scripture. For me, it is God's holiness, which is the quality of God that makes him other than us. And so God's holiness actually just means that he is set apart, that he is different, that he is utterly unique. And that is important to me because it really reminds me that God is God and I am not. I tend to struggle a lot with pride and with control. And I just have a desire to see myself as the best thing. And so reminding myself of God's holiness really keeps me in perspective that I am human and that my goal is to serve and worship a holy and perfect God. The second one that I really love is his sovereignty. And sovereignty means that God is in complete control over all things, that he is king, and that he is able to see and to know all that is going on in the world. And that's really just comforting because as we go about events in our lives that are difficult or sometimes hard to understand, it's just really comforting knowing that we have a God who is in complete control and that nothing surprises Him. So what about you, Alexa? What attributes do you most find encouraging in your life?
B
Yeah, they're all so good. So it's really hard to pick just two. But I think as of late in my life, it's God's faithfulness. So just seeing the ways in which he always comes through that he is just faithful to always take care of me and. And bring good things my life, even through hard circumstances. And then that kind of leads to my second one, which is God's immutability. So him being unchanging, I feel like my life changes, like all of the time, which could definitely lead to anxiety and overwhelm. But when I think about the fact that God is unchanging, that really helps me to feel at rest knowing that even though everything around me is changing, God remains the same. So I can look to him and trust in him, because he is always going to be my place of security and rest.
A
Oh, so good. Yeah, there are just so many different attributes of God. You'll notice this as you do your study. You'll just come across a ton of them, and I wish we could talk about every single one. So when annotating, here are some tips for how you might identify God's attributes in the passage. So there really are four steps, and you'll find this in your prep week as well. Four steps that really help us to notice God's attributes and to be able to identify them when we see them in a passage. So the first thing you want to do is look for words that describe God. So these can be things like pronouns that refer to God or adjectives that describe who he is, he is, or his character. We also want to look for words that describe God's action. So when he does something, when he acts, when he speaks, we want to make sure that we're making note of all of the things that relate to God or refer to God, but also anything that God does. And then we want to look for commands that God might give. We know that God gives commands out of his own nature and out of his own heart. And so any command that he gives is going to be related to his attributes. And then after we've done all of that, we can look at the list that we've made, look at the words that we've underlined or circled or highlighted, and we can ask, what attribute does do these things that we've seen in this passage point us to? So then you can grab your list that we have put in the study at the front during prep week, and you can look through those attributes and compare them to what you found in the passage and see, okay, are any of these attributes present in this passage? Based on what I found. And then. Yeah. So after you've done all of that, we want to ask, how does seeing God's attributes point us to Christ? So, Alexa, why don't you tell us a little bit about that?
B
Yeah. So when thinking about how God's attributes point to Christ, it's important to remember that all of who God is is reflected in who Jesus is. And that's because Jesus and God share the same nature. Therefore, God and Jesus share the same attributes. So really, any passage that reveals God's attributes points to Jesus, but we can more practically see how God's attributes point us to Christ by considering Jesus character and actions. The New Testament. So what does Jesus do? How does he act? What are his reactions to people? So, for example, if we're studying a passage and it reveals to us how God is compassionate or merciful, we can consider how Jesus demonstrated his compassion to others, such as when he healed the sick or fed the 5,000, or how Jesus demonstrated his mercy by dying on the cross.
A
Yes. I love that example. That's really good. Yeah. It's so important for us to remember that Jesus is God. So meaning that whatever is true of God is also true of Jesus. And so, yeah, that's all we have for you today. Thank you so much for joining us. We hope to see you tomorrow as we discuss the third and final day of prep week.

Alexa outlines a four-step process to help listeners identify God's attributes within biblical passages:
Look for Descriptive Words:
Identify pronouns and adjectives that describe God’s character.
Observe God's Actions:
Note what God does—His actions, speeches, and interactions.
Identify Commands:
Recognize any commands God issues, which reflect His nature.
Analyze and Match Attributes:
Compare the gathered information with a list of known God's attributes to determine which are present.
"You'll come across a ton of them, and I wish we could talk about every single one."
— Alexa [04:10]
This structured approach encourages a thorough and reflective study of Scripture, enabling a deeper recognition of God's character.
Beth explains the vital connection between God's attributes and Jesus Christ:
"All of who God is is reflected in who Jesus is. And that's because Jesus and God share the same nature. Therefore, God and Jesus share the same attributes."
— Beth [05:29]
She illustrates this by linking specific attributes to Christ's actions:
Compassion:
Jesus demonstrated compassion by healing the sick and feeding the multitudes.
Mercy:
His ultimate act of mercy was sacrificing Himself on the cross.
"If a passage reveals God's attributes like compassion or mercy, we can consider how Jesus demonstrated these through His actions."
— Beth [05:15]
Beth underscores that understanding God's attributes through Christ enhances the believer's knowledge and relationship with Him.
In wrapping up the episode, Alexa and Beth encourage listeners to apply the discussed methods in their daily Bible study.
