Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily grace. This year, we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study, Christ in All of Scripture. Each week, we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the New, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it. Hi, everyone. Welcome back to this new season of the Year in the Bible podcast. My name is Alexa and I'm here today with my co host, Beth.
A
Hi, friends. Today we are going to be looking at day two of week two, where we unpack the passage that we annotated yesterday a little bit more deeply. Now, something that's really important to note is that this week is slightly different from all of the weeks that will follow it. This week we are starting with a passage from the New Testament, whereas in future weeks, we're going to be talking about the Old Testament passage first, and then we're gonna discuss where that passage falls in the whole biblical story. But this Tuesday, we'll be just looking a little bit more closely at the context of the passage we annotated yesterday. Luke 24:44, 49.
B
Yeah. So when looking at Luke 24:44 49, it's helpful to zoom out just a little bit and take a look at what Luke 24 as a whole is about. So when we open up Luke 24, we see that this chapter is about Christ's resurrection. Luke begins this chapter talking about the experience of the women who went to Jesus's tomb and discovered that it was empty. So in Luke 24:1 12, no one has seen the resurrected Christ just yet. But Starting in verse 13, we see Jesus appear to some disciples. And through his interaction with them, Luke says that starting with Moses and all the prophets, Jesus interpreted for the disciples what the Old Testament says about himself.
A
That is so cool. So the first time that Jesus appears to his friends in Luke, after he resurrected, he takes time to explain how to interpret scripture. So tell us more about how this led into what we read in Luke 24:44 through 49.
B
Yeah. Luke 24:13, 27 basically sets the foundation for Luke 24, 44, 49. So Jesus has revealed himself to some of the disciples, and he's begun the work of showing them how his death and resurrection fulfills the Old Testament. And now he reveals himself to all of the disciples, and he opens their minds to understand how the law, prophets and psalms, which we talked about yesterday, is a way of saying all of the Old Testament, and therefore all of Scripture, is all about him and is ultimately fulfilled in him. And in doing so, he helps his disciples understand the purpose of his death and resurrection. We see in Luke 24:1 12 that his disciples hadn't grasped why Jesus died. So by using the Old Testament, Jesus teaches them that it was necessary for him to die and rise from the grave so that he could forgive people's sins and ultimately bring about the redemption God promised to his people.
A
This is so helpful. So through this interaction, Jesus shows us that we actually need the Old Testament to really understand why he came to earth, lived, was crucified, and rose from the dead. And it is that point that really lays the foundation for why we're doing this study in the first place. We need the Old Testament to really understand Jesus's work. And through better understanding his work, we can then better know him as a person and experience him in our everyday lives. So tomorrow and the rest of this week, we are going to begin this journey by diving into a passage from Isaiah 53 and looking at how it connects to Jesus and what we have read in Luke so far.
B
Yeah, I'm really, really excited about that. So that wraps up what we had for you all today. Join us tomorrow as we begin looking at Isaiah 53.
A

A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace: Season 4, Episode – Jesus's Death Fulfills the Old Testament: Going Deeper in Luke 24:44–49
Release Date: January 7, 2025
In the latest installment of Season 4 of A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace, hosts Alexa and Beth embark on an in-depth exploration of Luke 24:44–49. This episode serves as a pivotal point in their study, Christ in All of Scripture, emphasizing how Jesus's life, death, and resurrection are intricately woven into the fabric of the Old Testament.
This episode marks day two of week two in the study, delving deeper into a passage previously annotated by the hosts. Notably, this week deviates from the series' usual format by commencing with a New Testament passage before examining its Old Testament connections. Alexa highlights this shift:
"Now, something that's really important to note is that this week is slightly different from all of the weeks that will follow it. This week we are starting with a passage from the New Testament..."
— Alexa [00:38]
Beth provides a comprehensive overview of Luke 24, setting the stage for the discussion:
"So when we open up Luke 24, we see that this chapter is about Christ's resurrection... Starting in verse 13, we see Jesus appear to some disciples."
— Beth [01:12]
The hosts examine how Jesus begins to interpret the Scriptures for His disciples, elucidating how His death and resurrection fulfill Old Testament prophecies.
Delving into Luke 24:44–49, Alexa and Beth uncover the significance of Jesus's explanations to His disciples:
"Jesus has revealed himself to some of the disciples, and he's begun the work of showing them how his death and resurrection fulfills the Old Testament."
— Beth [02:09]
They discuss how Jesus opens the disciples' minds to understand that the Law, Prophets, and Psalms all point to Him, thereby fulfilling the entirety of Scripture.
Alexa emphasizes the necessity of the Old Testament in comprehending Jesus's mission:
"We actually need the Old Testament to really understand why he came to earth, lived, was crucified, and rose from the dead."
— Alexa [03:07]
This understanding not only reveals the purpose behind Jesus's actions but also deepens personal knowledge and experience of Him in daily life.
Looking ahead, the hosts announce their next focus:
"Tomorrow and the rest of this week, we are going to begin this journey by diving into a passage from Isaiah 53 and looking at how it connects to Jesus and what we have read in Luke so far."
— Alexa [03:07]
They express excitement about exploring Isaiah 53, a pivotal chapter that prophesies the suffering servant, further bridging Old Testament prophecy with New Testament fulfillment.
Alexa and Beth conclude the episode by inviting listeners to continue the journey of uncovering Christ's central role in Scripture. They encourage engagement with supplementary materials available on thedailygraceco.com and promote their social media channels for additional resources and community support.
