Welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the New, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Alexa
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but but the center of it. Hey friends. Welcome back to Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm here with my co host Beth.
Danny
Hello. We are ready to dive into the New Testament with you all today. This week's passage is John 1:1014, which says he was in the world and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God. To those who believe in his name, who are born not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. So Alexa, do you want to share about your annotations?
Alexa
Yeah, I thought I would talk about the second and third prompt. So the second prompt asks us to know any attributes of God. In verse 12, John says the phrase children of God. In verse 13, John talks about being born of God. And in verse 14, God is called the Father. I just really love that language of being adopted into God's family and him being our Father. I wasn't sure exactly what attributes describe those truths, so I put that God was loving and merciful. And then in verse 14, John talks about how we have observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. Because Jesus and God share the same nature and Jesus is the one who is revealing the Father. This verse shows us God's glory, grace and truth, which I think captures the attributes of holy, gracious, wise and omniscient.
Danny
Yeah, that's really good. I also made note of how verse 14 really helps us to reflect on God's attributes. It's just so helpful. So what did you want to say about the third prompt?
Alexa
Yeah, I really enjoyed the third prompt that asked us to look for connecting words or themes between John 1:1014 and Exodus 40:34 38 some things that I underlined as possible connections are in the world in verse 10, came to his own in verse 11 and dwelt among us in verse 14 because I thought those phrases connected to God's presence that we see in Exodus 40 and then I underlined observed his glory in verse 11 because the Israelites observed God's glory in the Tabernacle.
Danny
That's great. I love seeing all of those connections. Tomorrow we're going to unpack these connections even more as we talk about how both the Old Testament and the New Testament passages that we've studied this week point us to Jesus. So we will see you tomorrow.
