Welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ and all of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Alexa
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it.
Beth
Hi everyone. Welcome back to another week of A Year in the Bible. We are so excited to dive into another week of seeing Christ in Scripture. My name is Beth and I am here today with my co host Alexa.
Alexa
Hey friends, Today we'll be discussing the annotation day on Deuteronomy 6:4:5 that says listen Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength. So Beth, would you tell us how you annotated this passage?
Beth
Yeah. So this is a really short and really familiar passage. So I thought it was really good to actually sit down and really dwell on how much this short verse has to show us this week. So I think it's especially helpful to think about how this passage points to Christ. It can often be really confusing to read about God in the Old Testament especially thing verses like this that show us that God is one God and then be introduced to Jesus in the New Testament and be told that he is also God. So next to the word one in verse four, I wrote down these quotes that I remembered from the New Testament that Jesus says where he says in John 10:30, I and the Father are one, and then another 1 in John 14:9 where he says, whoever has seen me has seen the Father. So these passages really help me make sense of this phenomenon that God is indeed the one true God, but that he has revealed Himself through Jesus his Son. So we have already talked a little bit about the Trinity so far throughout our study time, and we've talked about Jesus's divinity. So I'm not going to go into too much more detail on this, but I just wanted to kind of hit on that a little bit. I thought it was a good place to remember how it is that we do worship one God who has revealed himself in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Alexa
That's super great, Beth. And I think it's really helpful for understanding the complexities of the the Trinity as well. Okay, what about the other annotation prompts? Was there anything else you wanted to discuss?
Beth
Yeah, I really liked the last two prompts that had us reflect on the commandment that was in verse five. And so the commandment is to love God. And then we are told exactly how we are to love God. And that is with everything. Our heart, our soul, and our strength. Which brings me back to God's attributes. It's really cool. He is the one God, and therefore he's the only one who is worthy of all of our worship and all of our affection. He is not asking for something that is not rightfully His. He created us and he is our King and our Lord, and so he is totally worthy of all of our love and all of our worship.
Alexa
That's so good, because God is the one true God. There isn't anything else that should have our full devotion. It's God who is to have our full devotion. That's such a good reminder. Well, thanks for joining us today. We hope you join us tomorrow as we go deeper into Deuteronomy 6.
Beth
4:5.

Episode: Season 4, Week 17, Day 1: Annotating Deuteronomy 6:4-5
Release Date: April 21, 2025
Host: The Daily Grace Co.
Transcript Excerpts: [01:00] - [04:49]
In this episode of "A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace," hosts Beth and Alexa delve into Deuteronomy 6:4-5, exploring its profound implications and connections to the New Testament. Aimed at uncovering how Jesus is intricately woven throughout both the Old and New Testaments, this session provides listeners with a deeper understanding of Scripture's unified message pointing to Christ.
Beth begins by emphasizing the significance of Deuteronomy 6:4-5, a passage known for its brevity yet immense depth. She remarks:
“This is a really short and really familiar passage. So I thought it was really good to actually sit down and really dwell on how much this short verse has to show us this week.”
— Beth [02:05]
The hosts focus on the declaration of God's oneness and the commandment to love Him wholeheartedly. Beth highlights how this Old Testament verse bridges to New Testament revelations about Jesus, addressing potential confusion about God's nature across both Testaments.
Beth draws connections between Deuteronomy and the New Testament, particularly referencing Jesus' statements in John 10:30 and John 14:9:
“I and the Father are one.”
— Jesus, John 10:30
“Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.”
— Jesus, John 14:9
— Beth [02:05]
These references illustrate the unity between God the Father and Jesus, reinforcing the concept of the Trinity. Beth explains:
“We worship one God who has revealed himself in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
— Beth [02:30]
Alexa complements Beth's insights by acknowledging the complexity of the Trinity, stating:
“That's super great, Beth. And I think it's really helpful for understanding the complexities of the Trinity as well.”
— Alexa [03:18]
They discuss how recognizing Jesus' divinity and His relationship with the Father enhances the understanding of God as a unified yet tri-personal being.
The conversation shifts to the second part of the passage, focusing on the command to love God with all one's heart, soul, and strength. Beth reflects on the attributes of God that make such complete devotion fitting:
“He is the one God, and therefore he's the only one who is worthy of all of our worship and all of our affection. He is not asking for something that is not rightfully His.”
— Beth [03:30]
Alexa reinforces this by stressing the exclusivity of God deserving of our full devotion:
“That's so good, because God is the one true God. There isn't anything else that should have our full devotion.”
— Alexa [04:04]
Beth and Alexa conclude the episode by encouraging listeners to continue their study and reflection on Deuteronomy 6, promising deeper exploration in the upcoming sessions.
