Welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the New, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but but the center of it. Hi everyone and welcome back to A Year in the Bible. I'm Alexa and I'm here with my co host Beth.
A
Hi friends.
B
It's Friday, so we will be wrapping up this week of Bible study today by talking about how we plan to apply what we learned this week through Deuteronomy 6, 4, 5 and Matthew 22:37 40. So, Beth, why don't you start us off?
A
Yeah. He really loved the question this study encourages us to ask ourselves. On page 64, it tells us to ask what is taking first place in my heart? What am I looking to and depending on besides God? Talk about convicting. There are so many things that I allow to take first place in my heart over God. The one that comes to mind as I was doing this study is other people's opinions of me. I often want to be liked. I want to be thought of as cool or smart. And these desires often have so much potential to lead me away from loving God with my whole self and obeying Him. So while it is good to recognize that Christ loved God perfectly and that his fulfillment of this command covers my inability to fulfill it, I also want to remember that Christ has given me his spirit to strengthen me and encourage me to do better in my pursuit of loving God with my all. And not because I have to, but because following God's commandments is actually good for me. And it is what God rightfully deserves.
B
That's so good. Okay, so you talked about loving God just now. What about when it comes to loving your neighbor?
A
Yeah. There are also so many ways that I can be better at loving my neighbors. The one thing that I've been convicted of lately is my tendency to get overwhelmed by all of the people that I see or hear who are in need of love and care. I live inside the major city of Houston and my neighborhood in particular has a lot of people who are homeless and in need of love and care. Care. And then also reading the news reveals that there are even more people out there who need love and who need help. And then there are my friends, my family, my church community, and random strangers that I run into every day. And so I often get really overwhelmed looking at all of the people that I need to be loving and I get paralyzed and I'm tempted to do nothing for any of them. So I want to start really working on just loving the person in front of me at any given moment. So. So I don't want to get caught up in the weight of all of the world's problems or allow myself to get overwhelmed. But when I see a homeless person in need of a smile or of help, I want to give it to them. When someone I know is in need, I want to do what I can to help them. And I want to always be showing kindness to strangers and other people that I may need. So I think I need to stop overthinking this commandment. If I'm honest, I think what you.
B
Just said makes the command to love our neighbors feel manageable. Because you're right. There are so many people who need love and care and we can't love them all perfectly, which just makes me so grateful that God does. But to start small and love the person in front of us feels doable. And that, I think, takes the pressure off, I think, when it comes to this command. Okay, we're going to enter into a time of prayer now. Beth is going to lead us through some prompts and just take a moment after each one to pray to the Lord.
A
Thank Jesus that even though we fail, he was able to perfectly follow these two greatest commandments. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the ways you do not love God with your whole being. Ask God to bring neighbors into your life who you can love and to give you the strength to love them well. Well, that is all that we have for you today and we will see you next week.

A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace: Season 4, Week 17, Day 5
Episode Title: Applying Deuteronomy 6:4-5 & Matthew 22:37-40
Release Date: April 25, 2025
Hosts: Alexa and Beth from The Daily Grace Co.
In this compelling episode of A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace, hosts Alexa and Beth delve into the profound connections between Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Matthew 22:37-40. Titled "Applying Deuteronomy 6:4-5 & Matthew 22:37-40," this session marks the culmination of Week 17 in Season 4 of their Christ in All of Scripture reading plan. The discussion aims to explore the practical applications of loving God and one’s neighbor, anchoring their conversation in these pivotal biblical passages.
Alexa opens the episode by setting the stage for exploring how Christ is central to both the Old and New Testaments. She emphasizes the show's mission to reveal Jesus woven throughout Scripture, aiming to deepen listeners' understanding and love for Him.
Beth introduces the day's focus on applying the two greatest commandments. She invites listeners to reflect on their personal spiritual journeys, whether they are following the current study or reviewing earlier seasons related to the Story of Redemption (Season 1), Eden to Eternity (Season 2), or Behold: A Study of the New Testament (Season 3).
Alexa shares a personal reflection inspired by Deuteronomy 6:4-5. She references a prompt from their study guide: "What is taking first place in my heart? What am I looking to and depending on besides God?" (00:53). Alexa confesses her struggle with seeking approval from others—desiring to be liked, cool, or smart—which often detracts from her commitment to love God wholeheartedly.
She highlights the balance between recognizing Christ's perfect love for God and the empowerment believers receive from the Holy Spirit to pursue a deeper love for God. Alexa underscores that following God's commandments is not merely an obligation but a pathway to personal well-being and honoring God’s rightful place in her life.
Transitioning to the second commandment, Beth prompts a discussion on loving one’s neighbor (02:00). Alexa candidly addresses her feelings of being overwhelmed by the vast number of people in need, particularly in her Houston neighborhood where homelessness is prevalent. She expresses how the multitude of needs—ranging from the homeless to family, friends, and strangers—can lead to paralysis and inaction.
To combat this, Alexa resolves to focus on the immediate person before her, striving to love and assist individuals one at a time rather than being burdened by the world's extensive needs. She emphasizes the importance of prioritizing genuine interactions and small acts of kindness, making the commandment to love neighbors more manageable and less daunting.
Beth applauds this pragmatic approach, noting that striving for perfection in loving all is unrealistic. She encourages starting small, appreciating that God’s ability to love unconditionally serves as a model for human relationships.
As the discussion transitions into application, Beth introduces a time of prayer, guiding listeners with specific prompts:
