Welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the New, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Beth
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it. Hi friends. Welcome back to A Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm here with my co host Beth.
Alexa
Hey everyone. Today we are closing out the week by talking about how we plan to apply the passages that we've been looking at this week. So Alexa, what are your application takeaways?
Beth
Yeah, I really appreciated the application prompt that asked how should being free from the curse of sin affect your daily life? I have the habit of often reflecting on the gospel, but not always responding to the Gospel. Like this week we got to consider the truth that Jesus has removed the curse for our sin and has given us blessing through Him. That is such an amazing truth. But I often appreciate that truth as well as other truths of the gospel in the moment and then just go on to live my life not responding to that truth and the truth of the gospel. So that prompt allowed me to take a second and consider, okay, how do I practically live out the freedom I have in Christ? I thought of a couple things. The first is that it allows me to not seek favor from God or other people through my actions. I try so hard so often to always do the right thing. And while that's a good thing, I think that desire usually is tied to trying to please God and others. I think if I always do what's right, then God will be happy with me and other people will be happy with me. But the gospel reminds me that my behavior doesn't earn favor with God and the favor of others doesn't amount to anything either. I already have God's favor through Christ, which frees me to love God and others through my actions without relying on those actions to make me righteous in the eyes of God or others.
Alexa
I love that it really takes the pressure and the focus off of us. So like, when I know that Christ took on the curse for my sin, it means that I can stop worrying about what God thinks of me and start just living the way that I was created to live and and loving other people around me with the same love that Christ showed me. So was there anything else that you took away from this week?
Beth
Yeah, I was also encouraged to depend on Jesus more in my daily life because Jesus is the one who obeyed God's law perfectly. He is the one who I'm supposed to rely on to obey the Lord. I think it's really easy for me to be self sufficient in my obedience to the Lord. I think okay, I'm going to read my Bible today. I'm going to work on my patients problem today. I'm going to choose to not be frustrated with my spouse today. And then when I experience failure in those areas, I'm prone to either fall into despair or just convince myself that I need to do better. But if Jesus is the only one who obeyed God's law perfectly, he is the only one who can help me in my obedience to God's law. So in light of the freedom I have through Christ, I want to depend on Jesus more and rely on the strength that he gives me to walk in God's commands.
Alexa
So helpful. And that really goes well with the first thing that you said too. We don't have to place pressure on ourselves and we are given the ultimate source of strength in Jesus. I don't know about you, but I feel like my life would be so much better if I consistently remembered to turn to Christ when I'm struggling with obeying God's Word. It would give me the strength to actually obey God's commands and it would only grow my relationship and dependence on Christ. All right friends, it is time to close out our week with responding in prayer. So take a moment to slow down and give this week of study over to God as Alexa leads you through a few prayer prompts.
Beth
Praise Jesus for taking on the curse for your sin on your behalf. Ask Jesus to remind you of the blessings you have in Him. Pray that you will respond to Christ's blessing with dependence on him and joyful obedience to the Lord. Thanks so much for joining us this week.
