Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Alexa
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire biblical story, but the center of it. Hi everyone. Welcome back to A Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm here with my co host Beth.
Beth
Hello friends.
Alexa
Today is Thursday, the day of the week, where we get to make the Christ connections between the passages that we've looked at this week. This week we have read Deuteronomy 18, 15, 19 and Hebrews 1:1:2. So Beth, do you want to break this connection down for us?
Beth
Yes, for sure. I think the best place to go for this connection is to compare and contrast Jesus with the prophets of the Old Testament. And so we've already seen how go God spoke through the prophets in a different time than he has through Jesus. We talked about this yesterday, how it was long ago, in the days of the Old Testament, before Jesus came, God was speaking to his people through prophets, but now he speaks through Christ. As Hebrews tells us. Like the prophets, Jesus is similar in that he reveals the words and the heart of God. So the prophets were men of God who are messengers of God, who were speaking God's words to the people. And Jesus, through his character, through the words that he speaks and through his actions and ultimately through his death on the cross and his resurrection, reveals who God is. He reveals God's message, the Gospel, the good news of God. And he reveals God's character and God's heart for his people. But unlike the prophets, Jesus reveals God perfectly because he himself is God and the prophets were just mere men. And then finally, the last comparison, or really a contrast that I would make is that through Jesus people are given a way to actually listen and obey God's word. And so the prophets could tell the people what they were doing wrong, they could point out their sin, but they could not offer them any way of actually experiencing transformation. But through Jesus's death and his resurrection, he invites people to trust in him and rely on him for salvation. And through doing that, we can be sanctified and actually brought closer to Christ, be made more like Christ and listen and obey God's word.
Alexa
That's super helpful. And what you just said there describes one of Jesus's roles as prophet. So if any of our listeners has heard of Jesus having that role before, you've helped us understand what that role is, which is just really, really helpful. Okay, so how does this directly connect to the Deuteronomy passage that we read this week?
Beth
Yeah, so this shows us that Jesus was the ultimate fulfillment of that promise that God gave to Moses and the people. He, the prophet that would come through the Israelites and who would speak the words of God. And so there were definitely prophets between Moses and Jesus, a lot of them, but they could not really lead the people to obedience the way that Jesus does through his death and resurrection. As we just talked about, Jesus reveals the heart and the grace of God not only through the words that he speaks, but through all parts of him and through his actions. So if we remember back in the Deuteronomy passage, it mentioned this event that took place in Exodus where God's presence caused the people to fear Him. But God gave us Jesus to reveal himself to his people and to make us able to be in his presence without fear. Because of Jesus's sacrifice, our sinful human flesh is covered and we are granted access to God's presence and therefore we don't have to fear being in God's immediate presence the way that the Israelites did.

It really is such a gift that we can draw near to God's presence without fear. I would love to talk about that more, but I will save that for tomorrow's discussion discussion when we apply what we learned this week, so be sure to join us tomorrow.
