Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Alexa
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it.
Beth
Hi friends. Welcome to our last day of week 19 of year in the Bible. My name is Beth and I'm here with my co host Alexa.
Alexa
Today we are going to be talking about how we plan on applying the passages that we read this week from the Old and New Testament. So Beth, how do you plan on applying these passages that we've read this week?
Beth
Yeah, so through these passages we have seen that God has made a way for us to experience his presence and his voice through Jesus Christ, that Jesus is the ultimate prophet and through him we see be God's character and we are given access to God's presence through Jesus's death and resurrection. And so I really appreciated this week's focus on the concept of fearing God. I was really thankful for the reminder that God is all powerful and he is a God to be feared. And I feel like I go back and forth between fearing God too much or fearing him too little. And these passages really kind of strike a balance between that. And so lately I think I've been definitely fearing God too little. And I need to remember that he is God and that his power is greater than I could ever conceive of. And yeah, I need to remember that when he speaks, the earth shakes. Right? We talked about that a few days ago. But it is only through dwelling on that, on God's power, that we can see just how compassionate and good he is to send us Jesus and reveal his presence and power in such a gentle way through His Son. And this really encourages me to respond in gratitude at how much God cares for me and desires to be known by me.
Alexa
I love that. In thinking about the Christ connection yesterday and how to apply what we learned in these passages, I was reminded of Hebrews 12:18 through 29. It would take me a while to read that passage, so I encourage those listening to go and check out that passage. Essentially Hebrews 12:18, 29 speaks to that incident you were talking about, Beth, in the beginning of the week in Exodus where the Israelites were afraid of God's presence and didn't want to hear directly from him. The author of Hebrews says in Hebrews 12:18 for you have not come to what could be touched to a blazing fire, to darkness, gloom, and storm, he says. Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to Jesus, the Mediator of a new covenant. And as he concludes that passage, he writes, therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful for by it we may serve God acceptably with reverence and awe for our God is a consuming fire. I just really love how the author of Hebrews talks about God in that verse and our response to God. Because God is a consuming fire. We we respond to him with reverence and awe. But we have been brought into a relationship with this great God so we can serve him out of joy rather than fear. Because the God who is a consuming fire is also the God who is our Father, who is kind and compassionate. And so his greatness leads us to fear him, but in a way that sees him as being both mighty and kind.
Beth
Wow. I really, really love that. Thanks so much for sharing and making that connection with Hebrews 12. I think that that's just like is so helpful as we move forward after this week.
Alexa
Yeah, definitely. We are going to enter into a time of prayer now. So after Beth reads these three prayer prom, take a moment to respond in prayer to the Lord.
Beth
Thank God that He desires to be known by us. Ask him to reveal areas in your heart where you need to fear him more. Praise God for sending Jesus to not only show us the character of God, but also deliver us from our sin through his death and resurrection. All right, well that is all that we have for this week. We are so excited to see more of Christ in all of Scripture with you again next week, so be sure to join us back here again on Monday.
