Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Alexa
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it. Hi friends. Welcome back to another week of A year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm joined as always with my co host Beth.
Beth
Hey everyone. This week we are going to be studying Deuteronomy chapter 30, verse 6 in Romans 2:28. And we will learn that Jesus is the one who changes our hearts so that we can obey the Lord. So today we're going to start off the week with an annotation day on Deuteronomy chapter 30, verse 6, which says the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live. So Alexa, tell us how this annotation day went for you.
Alexa
It was good, but kind of hard at the same time. You know, we are only looking at one verse here in Deuteronomy, so that can make entertaining kind of hard so you don't have too much to look at. But I do think there are still things to note and I'm excited for when we get to talk about this verse in more detail tomorrow. For any words or phrases that point to Christ. I highlighted love him with all your heart and all your soul for two reasons. Because one, Jesus does that perfectly. He loves God with all his heart and soul. But then two, because Jesus says similar words in the Gospels when he is talking to the rich young ruler, we actually talked about one of those instances in the Gospels, Matthew 22, 37, 40 and the passage it connects to Deuteronomy 6, 4, 5 on week 17. So it's fun to see that language appear again. And the language of circumcision in the first part of the verse also made me think of Ezekiel 36, 26, in which God promises to give his people new hearts. And it's Jesus who ultimately fulfills that promise.
Beth
Wow, love that. So many cool connections already. A lot of things that I definitely would have thought of. So I'm really, really glad that you brought those out. And I can't wait to unpack these more as the week goes on too. Was there anything else that stood out to you in this verse?
Alexa
Yeah, I really enjoyed seeing how God is the one who accomplishes what is being talked about in this verse. The fourth prompt asks us to circle the word will throughout the verse and we see this word appear three times so that repetition shows us that it's by God's actions and his faithfulness that his people will have circumcised hearts that will cause them to to love him and experience life. So what we see Here in Deuteronomy 30, verse 6 is a promise that God will be faithful to fulfill.
Beth
Hmm. So good. What a cool picture of how God carries out his will through us and also in spite of us. And we're definitely going to be talking about this more tomorrow and so you definitely want to join us and we are excited to unpack this a bit more.

Hosts: Beth & Alexa
In this episode of A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace, hosts Beth and Alexa embark on Season 4 of their "Christ in All of Scripture" reading plan. The focus for Week 20, Day 1 centers on Deuteronomy 30:6, complemented by insights from Romans 2:28. The primary objective is to explore how Jesus transforms our hearts, enabling us to fully obey the Lord.
Beth introduces the central scripture for the day:
Deuteronomy 30:6: "The Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, and you will love him with all your heart and all your soul so that you will live."
(03:00)
The hosts emphasize the significance of heart transformation as a divine act, setting the stage for understanding Jesus' role in renewing our inner selves.
Alexa shares her experiences from the annotation day:
"I highlighted 'love him with all your heart and all your soul' because Jesus perfectly exemplifies this love, loving God with his entire being. Additionally, Jesus echoes this language in the Gospels when speaking to the rich young ruler, specifically in Matthew 22:37-40, which connects back to Deuteronomy 6:4-5 from Week 17."
(01:08)
She draws parallels between the Old Testament verse and New Testament teachings, illustrating the continuity of God's plan to center Scripture around Christ.
Furthermore, Alexa notes the recurring theme of circumcision as a metaphor for heart transformation:
"The repetition of the word 'will' in Deuteronomy 30:6 underscores God's faithfulness. He is the one who accomplishes the circumcision of hearts, enabling genuine love and life."
(02:15)
This highlights God's active role in fulfilling His promises, ensuring that believers possess transformed hearts through His enduring faithfulness.
Beth responds enthusiastically to Alexa's observations:
"Wow, love that. So many cool connections already. A lot of things that I definitely would have thought of. So I'm really, really glad that you brought those out."
(02:28)
She expresses excitement for the deeper exploration of these themes in upcoming discussions, anticipating a richer understanding of God's work in believers' lives.
Beth and Alexa wrap up the episode by encouraging listeners to engage with the study materials and join them in the continued exploration of Scripture. They highlight the importance of understanding how every part of the Bible points to Christ, fostering a deeper love and knowledge of Him.
"We are looking forward to studying God's Word with you again tomorrow."
