Welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the New, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Alexa (0:17)
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it.

Hi everyone. Hello everyone. Welcome back to another week of A Year in the Bible. My name is Beth and I am here again with my friend and co host Alexa.

Hi friends. This week we are looking at Joshua 21:43, 45 and Hebrews 4, 5, 11 and we're going to discuss how Jesus brings us rest. Today we are talking about our annotations on Joshua 21:43 45 which says, so the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. The Lord gave them rest on every side according to all that he had sworn to their ancestors. None of their enemies were able to stand against them, for the Lord handed over all their enemies to them. None of the good promises the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed. Everything was fulfilled. So Beth, would you tell us your annotations on this passage?
Beth (1:21)
I really enjoyed annotating this passage. To start, I'll share the words or phrases that I thought pointed to Christ. First, I highlighted the word rest in verse 44 because it reminded me of Matthew 11 where Jesus says, come to me all who are weary and have heavy laden, and I will give you rest. And then I also highlighted the last phrase of the passage, which is everything was fulfilled because it reminded me just the general theme of the study, which is that all things in the Old Testament are ultimately fulfilled through Christ.
Alexa (1:48)
Yeah, those are some great connections. I really like that connection to Matthew 11. I feel like whenever rest comes up in scripture, I think of that that verse pretty often. Are there any other annotations you want to discuss?
Beth (2:01)
Yeah, I think that my favorite prompt this time around was the one that said to circle any repeated words. This was always a good thing to make note of when reading scripture, generally because ancient writers typically repeat things that they want to emphasize. So in this passage I circled the words gave, sworn ancestors, enemies, and none because those are the words that repeated in this passage. So all of these repeated words emphasize so many different things. First, the words gave and sworn both point towards God's provision and faithfulness. The word ancestors Scriptures repeated in the way it was shows how God has been faithful throughout time and generations. And then finally the word enemies being repeated shows how God defeats the enemies of his people and is always victorious. And then finally the phrases at the end that begin with the word none just emphasize God's faithfulness Once again.
