Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Beth
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire biblical story, but but the center of it. Hey friends. Welcome back to Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm joined by my co host, Beth.
Alexa
Hey everyone. So far this week we have looked at the Old Testament, specifically Ruth 4, 14 and 15. And so now we're going to be turning to the New Testament and look at John 10:10. So today we're going to discuss the annotations for that passage. And so that verse reads, a thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it in abundance. So Alexa, how did this annotation day go for you?
Beth
It was both good and interesting. Good because I think this is such an encouraging verse, but also interesting because it's so short. Because it was so short, I found that some of the prompts were a little tricky, one in particular being to know any attributes of God in the text. So after giving it some thought, I know that John 10:10 is Jesus's words. So Jesus's words of I have come remind me that God is the one who sent Jesus and specifically sent us Jesus to give us life. Which then reminded me of John 3:16 that says that God so loved the world that he gave us Jesus so that we would have eternal life. So I think the fact that Jesus has come and it's God who made it possible for Jesus to come to shows us God's love for us and also his grace to give us life in him.
Alexa
Oh yeah, that's super helpful. I definitely struggled with that prompt. So I appreciate you sharing us those connections. What else did you note in this passage?
Beth
Well, I appreciated the prompt that asked us to underline the word in the verse that's used to describe the kind of life Jesus gives us to look up the definition in the dictionary and then write the definition in the margin. That word is abundance. So I, I cheated a little bit and I used two dictionaries just because I think it's fun to compare and contrast different definitions. I started with good old Merriam Webster and the first definition for that was an ample amount. The second definition was affluence or wealth, and then the third definition was relative degree of plentifulness. I then used the Oxford English Dictionary and its definition for abundance is an overwhelming quantity or amount of something that.
Alexa
Is such a fun prompt. I like how reading those different definitions really forces me to sit with the word much longer than I would have if I just read over the verse once or twice. So yeah, these annotation days are so good for helping me dwell on the text for longer periods of time. So thanks for pointing that out for us. Tomorrow we're going to be seeing what this short verse and the Book of Ruth have to say to each other and how they point us to Christ. So I cannot wait for that. And we will see you all then.
Beth

Summary of "A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace"
Episode: S4: Week 23 Day 3: Annotating John 10:10
Release Date: June 4, 2025
In Season 4 of "A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace," hosted by Alexa and Beth of The Daily Grace Co., listeners are guided through the "Christ in All of Scripture" study plan. This episode focuses on Week 23, Day 3, where the hosts delve into John 10:10 through a process of annotation to uncover deeper biblical insights.
Each week, Alexa and Beth explore two passages—one from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament—highlighting their connections and how they point to Jesus Christ. For this episode, the Old Testament reference is Ruth 4:14-15, and the New Testament passage under examination is John 10:10.
The central scripture for this episode is John 10:10, which states:
"A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it in abundance."
—John 10:10 (NIV)
Alexa introduces the day's focus on annotating this powerful yet succinct verse, setting the stage for a thorough exploration of its meaning and implications.
Beth reflects on the annotation process, particularly the challenge of identifying attributes of God within the text. She articulates a profound connection between John 10:10 and John 3:16, emphasizing God's love and grace:
"John 10:10 is Jesus’s words. So Jesus’s words of 'I have come' remind me that God is the one who sent Jesus and specifically sent us Jesus to give us life. [...] the fact that Jesus has come and it's God who made it possible for Jesus to come to shows us God's love for us and also his grace to give us life in him."
—Beth [01:56]
This reflection underscores the theological theme that God's ultimate purpose in sending Jesus is to grant abundant life, highlighting both His love and grace.
A significant part of the annotation exercise involved examining the term "abundance" used in John 10:10. Beth discusses her approach to understanding this key word by consulting multiple dictionaries:
"The word is 'abundance.' I used two dictionaries [...] Merriam Webster defines it as an ample amount, affluence or wealth, and a relative degree of plentifulness. Oxford English Dictionary defines it as an overwhelming quantity or amount of something."
—Beth [02:46]
Alexa echoes the value of this exercise, noting how it encourages a deeper contemplation of the text:
"Reading those different definitions really forces me to sit with the word much longer than I would have if I just read over the verse once or twice."
—Alexa [02:46]
This exploration of "abundance" reveals the multifaceted nature of life that Jesus offers—one that is plentiful and fulfilling beyond mere existence.
While the episode primarily focuses on John 10:10, Alexa hints at the interconnectedness of the Old and New Testaments. She previews the next day's discussion, where the short verse from John will be examined alongside passages from the Book of Ruth, further illustrating how both Testaments point to Christ.
As the episode wraps up, Beth encourages listeners to engage with additional resources available on the Daily Grace Co. website and to follow their social media platforms for ongoing Bible study materials and encouragement.
"Tomorrow we're going to be seeing what this short verse and the Book of Ruth have to say to each other and how they point us to Christ."
