Welcome to A Year in the Bible With Daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the New, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Beth
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it. Hi friends. Hello friends. Welcome back to another episode of A Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm here with my co host Beth.
Alexa
Hey everyone. So this week we have been studying 1st Samuel 2:1 10 and Luke 1:46 55. And we've learned that Christ is the anointed One who humbles the proud and exalts the lowly. So today we're going to discuss how we plan on applying these passages that we have been studying this week. So, Alexa, do you want to share your application takeaways?
Beth
Yes. I was really challenged by this question. In today's study, Hannah and Mary found joy through placing their hope and satisfaction in God. How can you practically find satisfaction in Christ rather than in your possessions or circumstances? I've mentioned on this podcast how hard it is for me to not rely on my circumstances for for comfort and satisfaction. It's really easy for me to feel joyful if I'm doing something that I enjoy and to feel happy when circumstances are good. But then I become discontent when my circum aren't good or I become unsatisfied because something that I was looking forward to changes. And I think that makes sense to a certain extent. Right? Like it makes sense that we feel good when things are good and bad when things are bad. And I don't think it's a bad thing either to grieve when we're disappointed or when life is hard. But at the same time, the ways in which my mood can instantly change depending on what I'm doing or what is happening isn't a good thing. That shows me that my hope and satisfaction is in what I have or it's in my circumstances. And I think one major reason why that's the case for me is because there is instant gratification that comes from possessions or certain activities. Like when I pick up my phone and scroll on Instagram. That gives me instant gratification when I go to the bookstore and buy a book. That gives me instant gratification and my Phone or a book. They're not bad things. But my reliance on. On things like that for my hope and satisfaction isn't good. So I think finding satisfaction in Christ for me can look like, for one, remembering that in Christ I have eternal satisfaction, that I don't need instant gratification because I have eternal satisfaction through him. But more practically, I want to really challenge myself, to not let my possessions or circumstances dictate my personal happiness. I want to enjoy good things without placing my satisfaction in them. I want to be okay if I don't get what I want or something shifts in my circumstances because I know that I don't need everything to be good, to have joy and hope in the Lord. And I. I think for me this looks like starting small. And in the moments I feel myself placing my satisfaction in something or feeling discontent because of my circumstances, to stop and say to myself, I don't need this thing to feel content or it's okay that things look different. And then pray and ask God to help me place my hope and satisfaction in Him.
Alexa
I really appreciate you sharing that. I think this is such a trap for all of us who live in this world that is full of so much instant gratification and temporary satisfactions. I was just talking with my husband the other day about my tendency toward retail therapy because of the rush that buying something new gives me. But give it one week or even less than that sometimes and the rush is totally gone. So I'm with you. I also feel challenged to go to Christ for that lasting satisfaction. And I think the way these passages have prompted me to do that is by viewing the world through a larger lens than I typically do. So, like Mary and Hannah, I don't want to just see God's work in my life as affecting me, but also how it affects God's entire kingdom. So I started thinking that May, instead of shopping, when I'm feeling a lack of satisfaction, maybe I can set up a coffee date with one of the other women in my small group and we can chat about what God is doing in our lives. I think the rush that I would get from a conversation like that would be much greater and longer lasting than I would get from buying a new sweater. Well, with all of that, we are going to close out our week with prayer like we always do. So take some time and close your eyes if you're able to, and bring your heart to the Lord using these prayer prompts.
Beth
Praise Jesus for taking you from a place of sin and shame and raising you up to an exalted position. Pray that you will respond to Christ's salvation and blessings with continual praise.
