Welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace. This year, we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Host 2
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire biblical story, but the center of it. Hey, friends.
Host 1
Hello, friends.
Host 2
Welcome back to another week of A Year in the Bible. I'm usually joined by my co host, Beth, but as I mentioned last week, Beth is on maternity leave, so I will be joined by different friends from the Daily Grace coat team. And this week I'm joined by Emma. Hi, Emma.
Host 1
Hey.
Host 2
If you listen to our main Daily Grace podcast, you will recognize Emma's voice as she is one of the co hosts. She does an amazing job co hosting with Crystal, and I'm just super excited to have her here to discuss this week's study of Ezra 3, 10, 11 and Ephesians 2, 11, 12. So as we study these passages this week, we're going to learn that believers are the new temple with Jesus as our cornerstone. So to start us off, Emma, could you read Ezra 3, 10, 11 for us?
Host 1
Absolutely. So Ezra 3, 10, 11 says, when the builders had laid the foundation of the Lord's temple, the priests dressed in their robes and holding trumpets, and the Levites descended from Asaph holding, holding symbols, took their positions to praise the Lord as King David of Israel had instructed. They sang with praise and thanksgiving to the Lord, for he is good. His faithful love to Israel endures forever. Then all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord because the foundation of the Lord's house had been laid.
Host 2
Awesome. Thanks. So, Emma, I would love to hear from you what your annotation takeaways from this passage are.
Host 1
Yeah, I feel like there are so many, many first. One of the first things I noticed is that this passage just teaches us so much about the character of the Lord. So when we look at the specific words of praise that the people are giving to the Lord, we see things like good and faithful love being mentioned. And I'm always just super intrigued when it comes to passages where people are spending time intentionally praising God because I think there's so much that we could give God glory for. And so I always want to know what specifically are they giving God glory for in these passages. And I love that in this, these specific verses that the focus is on God's goodness and the focus is on God's faithful love for the people, which is often referred to as steadfast love throughout scripture as well. And so I think these, these qualities about the Lord are so important and teach us about who he truly is. And again, I just think it's so interesting that after they are laying the foundation of God's temple and they are getting ready to, you know, praise God with the instruments and they're holding the symbol bowls and the trumpets and all the other things that are there, they take time to praise God for His love and for his goodness. And so that was just intriguing. That stood out to me, and I thought that was really interesting.
Host 2
Yeah, I love that God's goodness and faithful love is the focus here too. And like you were saying, Emma, I feel like you could almost hear the praise as you're reading this passage. Just like the words about the trumpets and the symbols and the people shouting and praise is just a super amazing response to God's faithful love.
Host 1
A hundred percent. The other huge area I also spent time in was the fact that praise is mentioned in this passage three times. And this is two verses. So three times. I feel like it's a lot for just two verses for the same word to be mentioned over and over again. And I love that the people are anchoring themselves and worshiping the Lord after they're laying the foundation of the temple. Like, their initial response is to praise God, which I think is so beautiful. And it kind of causes me to wonder how often my response to things in general is praise for the Lord. Like, how often am I praising God for certain things? How often am I declaring his goodness back to him? Am I recognizing his faithful love to me? And I would say I probably don't do that often enough throughout my life. But I think the emphasis on praise being in here three times shows us that we should be praising the Lord frequently. And the fact that they are taking the. The time to worship the Lord before they continue the construction of the temple, but right after they lay out the foundation, they begin praising Him. I think it's just so fascinating, so interesting, and just causes me to wonder how often I'm actually giving God glory for certain things.
Host 2
Yeah, same. I know that I don't always praise God as often as I should, but you're right, the repetition of the word praise here in this passage just, just really shows us the dedication that these people have to worship God that I want to have as. As well. So really, really beautiful response here. That's all that we have for today, but we hope you join us tomorrow as we dive deeper into Ezra 31011 thank you for listening to today's episode of A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace. Host/Author: The Daily Grace Co.
Episode: Season 4, Week 27, Day 1
Release Date: June 30, 2025
Study Focus: Ezra 3:10-11 and Ephesians 2:11-12
Theme: Believers as the New Temple with Jesus as the Cornerstone
In this episode of A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace, the hosts continue their Season 4 journey through the "Christ in All of Scripture" reading plan. Although the usual co-host, Beth, is on maternity leave, Emma joins the discussion to delve into this week's study. The episode focuses on Ezra 3:10-11 and draws connections to Ephesians 2:11-12, emphasizing the concept of believers being the new temple with Jesus as the cornerstone.
Emma reads Ezra 3:10-11:
"When the builders had laid the foundation of the Lord's temple, the priests dressed in their robes and holding trumpets, and the Levites descended from Asaph holding symbols, took their positions to praise the Lord as King David of Israel had instructed. They sang with praise and thanksgiving to the Lord, for he is good. His faithful love to Israel endures forever. Then all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord because the foundation of the Lord's house had been laid."
— Ezra 3:10-11 (MM:01:15)
Emma highlights the passage's focus on God's character:
"The focus is on God's goodness and the focus is on God's faithful love for the people, which is often referred to as steadfast love throughout scripture.”
— Emma (MM:01:54)
She emphasizes how intentional praise in Scripture reveals specific attributes of God, encouraging believers to recognize and celebrate His enduring love and goodness.
Emma observes the repetition of the word "praise" within the passage:
"Praise is mentioned in this passage three times... it shows us that we should be praising the Lord frequently."
— Emma (MM:03:30)
She reflects on the significance of consistent praise, questioning personal habits and encouraging listeners to make praise a regular response to God's actions in their lives.
Host 2 echoes this sentiment:
"I feel like you could almost hear the praise as you're reading this passage... a super amazing response to God's faithful love."
— Host 2 (MM:03:14)
The discussion underscores the communal and individual importance of worship, especially in moments of foundational significance, such as laying the temple's foundation.
The hosts draw parallels between the physical temple described in Ezra and believers' role as the new temple in Ephesians, with Jesus as the cornerstone. This connection reinforces the theme of unity and the centrality of Christ in both Old and New Testaments.
Both hosts reflect on personal spiritual practices:
Emma contemplates the frequency of her praise, recognizing a desire to praise God more consistently.
"Am I recognizing his faithful love to me? I probably don't do that often enough throughout my life."
— Emma (MM:03:14)
Host 2 shares a similar introspection, striving to cultivate a worshipful response in daily life.
These reflections serve as a call to listeners to evaluate and enhance their own worship habits, aligning with the passage's emphasis on continual praise.
The episode wraps up with an invitation to listeners to join the next day's study, promising a deeper dive into Ezra 3:10-11. The hosts encourage engagement with additional resources available on the Daily Grace website and invite listeners to follow their social media for further Bible study tools and encouragement.
