Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Alexa
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it. Friends, welcome back to another episode of A Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm joined by my co host for the week, Emma. Hi everyone.
Emma
Today we are going to be making the Christ connection between the two passages we study this week. Job 1, verses 20 through 22, and Matthew 26, verses 36 through 46. So Alexa, what do these two passages teach us about Christ?
Alexa
Well, I mentioned the other day that Matthew 26:36 46 is one of my favorite passages of scripture, but I didn't say why. I think Matthew 26:36 46 is one of the clearest passages that shows us Jesus humanity. You mentioned that, Emma. I think yesterday, you know, I. Yesterday I pointed out that Jesus was deeply grieved and that shows us the emotions that Jesus was feeling. His pending death was something that brought him great sorrow. So thinking back to Job one, we see Job experiencing deep sorrow too. So the fact that we see Jesus, who is God in the flesh, also experiencing deep sorrow in the garden just teaches us that Jesus has felt what we have felt. He knows what it's like to be deeply grieved, which is why he's called the man of sorrows in Isaiah 53. So that's one of the reasons why I love this passage so much. It clearly shows us grace, Jesus's humanity, and reminds us that Jesus truly knows how we feel when we, when, when we suffer because he suffered too.
Emma
I love that connection. It reminds me so much of Hebrews 4:15 where it talks about how we do not have a high priest who's unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but he's. He's walked through everything that we have endured. And Jesus walked through deep suffering and deep sorrow and, and hardship. And so we can go to him when we also experience that suffering and that sorrow. And so that you pulled that idea of Jesus's humanity out of this passage. What else do we learn about Jesus through these passages?
Alexa
Yeah, well, another reason I love this passage is the resilience that Jesus has before his imminent arrest and death, Jesus asks God to take the cup from him, the cup of judgment that would soon be poured out upon him. But even though Jesus expresses that desire to God, he responds in obedience to God when he says, you will be done. We've all experienced suffering before, but none of us have had to take on the just punishment for all of our sins. That is extremely weighty, right? And so Jesus felt the extreme weight of that punishment when he was in the garden, like, you know, a semblance of the weight of that. And he experienced, like, you know, the full weight of that on the cross. But he, you know, he was still feeling that weight in a sense, in that in the garden, you know, he would. He knew what he was going to have to take on on the cross. But Jesus yielded to the Father's will because he trusted God completely and he obeyed him completely. And that's how we see another connection to Job. Job grieved his loss, but in his suffering, he chose to worship God. And the text said that in all his grief, Job didn't sin. Now, you know, Job is still a sinner. And so there, that is one difference between him and Jesus. But this is similar to what we see in Jesus's response in the garden. Even in deep suffering, Jesus remained sinless. He didn't curse God or refuse to do what God had called him to do. He obeyed God entirely and trusted him completely.
Emma
I love that. It reminds me a lot of another passage in Philippians 2, verses 5 through 11, where Paul is talking about Christ's humility and how Jesus clothed himself in humility and walked through God's plan for him to die on the cross for our sins. And even though, like you said, Job is a sinner, and so there is still differentiation between Job and Jesus, I think Job also carried humility as well in surrendering to God's plan and trusting in God's plan rather than his own. And I love that we get to see that character of humility in Job. But even, you know, more displayed in Christ's character walking towards the cross. And so I think that is beautiful. Thank you all for joining us today as we dove into these passages. We're going to wrap up this week tomorrow and talk about application, and we'll see you then.

Release Date: July 10, 2025
Hosts: Alexa and Emma
Podcast Host/Author: The Daily Grace Co.
In this enriching episode of A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace, hosts Alexa and Emma delve deep into the heart of Scripture by connecting passages from the Old Testament and the New Testament. This week's focus is on Job 1:20-22 and Matthew 26:36-46, exploring how these passages illuminate the person and work of Jesus Christ. The podcast aims to reveal the intricate ways Jesus is woven throughout the Biblical narrative, encouraging listeners to develop a deeper love and understanding of Him.
Emma introduces the Old Testament passage from Job, emphasizing Job's profound sorrow and unwavering faith despite immense suffering. Job’s response to his trials exemplifies steadfast worship and trust in God, even when faced with incomprehensible loss.
Alexa highlights the significance of this New Testament passage, where Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest. This scene vividly portrays Jesus' humanity, showcasing His deep anguish and the emotional weight of His impending crucifixion.
Emma and Alexa draw powerful parallels between Job's experiences and Jesus' suffering:
Shared Suffering and Sorrow
Alexa remarks, "[00:57] Matthew 26:36-46 is one of the clearest passages that shows us Jesus' humanity... Jesus truly knows how we feel when we suffer because he suffered too." This connection underscores that both Job and Jesus endured profound grief, highlighting Jesus' compassionate understanding of human suffering.
Jesus as the Man of Sorrows
Emma connects this to Isaiah 53, referencing Jesus as the "Man of Sorrows" and reinforcing the idea that Jesus’ experiences are a bridge between divine providence and human pain.
The hosts delve into the depth of Jesus' emotional and spiritual state during His trials:
Jesus' Emotional Grief
Alexa states, "[00:57] Jesus was deeply grieved and that shows us the emotions that Jesus was feeling." This emphasizes that Jesus did not shy away from experiencing genuine human emotions, making Him relatable and approachable.
Sympathy for Our Weaknesses
Emma reflects on Hebrews 4:15, noting, "[02:04] Jesus walked through everything that we have endured... we can go to him when we also experience that suffering and that sorrow." This assures listeners of Jesus' empathetic nature and His ability to intercede on their behalf.
A significant portion of the discussion focuses on Jesus' unwavering commitment to God's will:
Submission to God's Plan
Alexa explains, "[02:35] Jesus yielded to the Father's will because he trusted God completely and he obeyed him completely." This illustrates Jesus' resolute faith, even when faced with immense personal cost.
Parallel to Job's Faithfulness
Drawing a comparison, Alexa notes, "[02:35] Job grieved his loss, but in his suffering, he chose to worship God. In all his grief, Job didn't sin." Both figures demonstrate remarkable faithfulness and integrity amidst suffering.
While paralleling their experiences, the hosts also highlight the distinctions between Job and Jesus:
Sinlessness vs. Human Frailty
Alexa points out, "[02:35] Job is still a sinner, and so there is still differentiation between him and Jesus." Unlike Job, who, despite his righteousness, remains a human with imperfections, Jesus is presented as sinless, fully embodying divine perfection.
Extended Scope of Suffering
Emma expands on this by comparing Job's humility to Jesus' greater display of humility: "[04:12] Christ's humility walking towards the cross... more displayed in Christ's character." This underscores Jesus' unique role in redeeming humanity through His sacrifice.
The episode beautifully intertwines the narratives of Job and Jesus, revealing profound truths about Christ's nature and mission. By examining Job 1:20-22 and Matthew 26:36-46, Alexa and Emma demonstrate how Jesus' experiences reflect and fulfill the themes of suffering, obedience, and unwavering faith found in the Old Testament. This connection not only deepens the listener's understanding of Jesus but also highlights the cohesive and redemptive thread that runs throughout the entire Bible.
Emma concludes, "[04:12] I love that we get to see that character of humility in Job. But even, you know, more displayed in Christ's character walking towards the cross. And so I think that is beautiful." This sentiment encapsulates the episode's essence: uncovering the profound unity of Scripture in pointing to Jesus Christ as the central figure of redemption.
Listeners are encouraged to continue their journey through the Bible with the hosts, anticipating the next week's application of these timeless truths.
