Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily grace. This year, we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study, Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire biblical story, but the center of it.

Welcome to the Year in the Bible podcast. My name is Beth and I'm here today with my co host, Alexa.
B
Hey, everyone. We are really excited to dive into week three of Christ in all of Scripture. This week we are talking about the connection between Genesis 1 and Colossians 1. And today we'll be talking about week three, day one's annotation day on Genesis 1:1 and 1:2631. So, Beth, what did you think of today's annotation day?
A
I really enjoyed annotating this passage. The fact that we are made in God's image is often talked about and taken for granted in churches and in Bible studies. And like, I don't know, you hear about it all the time. So it was super nice to actually slow down and spend time reading over this specific text and thinking about that concept of being created in the image of God, particularly in the context of the whole creation story. It was really cool.
B
Yeah, there is just so much happening in the creation story that it's great to be able to meditate on what God did in creating humans specifically. I'm curious though, did any of the annotation prompts stand out to you as particularly difficult?
A
Very, very good question. Initially, the first prompt, highlight any words or phrases that point to Christ was very daunting. And I've like, done this before too, so I thought that was really interesting. Of just like every time that question comes up, it's like, okay, I have to rethink about this. But. But yeah, since this passage is from the Old Testament, it can often be really hard to first know how to follow the prompt. But I remembered the chart from the prep week on pages 20 through 21. And so I want to encourage you that if you find yourself stuck on this prompt for any of the passages moving on to go back and look at those pages where there's that chart and the list of ways that Old Testament passages can point to Jesus. I would have been totally lost on this prompt without that list. What it helped me see Specifically is how the role of God's image bearer points to Christ. And so God created humans in his image, and Jesus was fully human. And so that's a Christ connection right there. These humans were created to rule over creation, and Jesus is the true king and ruler of all the earth. And so there's another Christ connection. Humans were told to obey God and receive his benefits and his gifts. And Jesus was the only one who was actually the true obedient servant of God his entire life. And he was bestowed the highest honor in his resurrection and glorification. And so, yeah, the role of image bearer, the role given to the first people, Adam and Eve, was actually fulfilled by Jesus. And I thought those Christ connections were just really cool.
B
Yeah, that's so good. I found myself a little stumped by that prompt too. And while I did think of how Jesus is the one who rules over creation, I didn't think about Jesus being fully human and how Jesus ultimately fulfilled our role as image bearer. So that's just really helpful. Were there any other prompts you think that we should address?
A
I personally really liked that last prompt as well. The how does God demonstrate His goodness to the first people prompt. It's just really cool to see how generous God is. Even from the very beginning of creation. In Matthew 7:11, Jesus tells us that God delights in giving good gifts to his children. And it's so cool to see that that's present even here at the beginning of the story. He blessed his people. He gives them life. He created them in his image. He gives them an important. And he clearly tells them what that role is and what their job is. And so I thought that was just all really, really cool to think about. What about you? Are there any prompts that you want to go over?
B
Yeah, maybe the second to last prompt. I enjoyed this prompt because of the repetition we see in the passage of God being creator. I think it says about four times in the readings that God created, which just emphasizes that this entire world and everything in it was made by God's own hands. And I just love that reminder and the fact that the same God who created the world is the same God who created you and me.
A
Oh, I love that. Yeah, that's really, really cool. When you think about, like, just how beautiful and how big creation is and how big that means that God is. It is really cool to think that, like, he didn't just create all of that stuff, he also created us and he loves us, and I love that. Well, that is all that we have for you today. I really hope you enjoyed diving deeper into this passage today. I know that we did come back tomorrow and we're going to unpack to the context of all of Genesis is Chapter one together.

A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace
Season 4, Week 3, Day 1: Annotating Genesis 1:1; 26-31
Release Date: January 13, 2025
In this episode of A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace, hosts Beth and Alexa delve into the third week of their study series, Christ in All of Scripture. Their focus for the day is on Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:26-31, exploring the profound connections between the creation narrative and the person of Jesus Christ.
Beth and Alexa begin by sharing their experiences with the day's annotation activities. They emphasize the importance of slowing down to deeply understand key theological concepts within the creation story, particularly the notion of humans being made in God's image.
Beth reflects on the common teaching about humans being created in God's image, noting how thorough annotation allows for a richer appreciation of this truth within the broader context of creation:
"[00:58]…it's super nice to actually slow down and spend time reading over this specific text and thinking about that concept of being created in the image of God, particularly in the context of the whole creation story."
— Beth
Alexa echoes Beth's enthusiasm and shares her initial challenges with the annotation prompts, specifically identifying words or phrases that point to Christ within the Old Testament passage:
"[01:38]…the first prompt, highlight any words or phrases that point to Christ was very daunting… but I remembered the chart from the prep week… and it helped me see specifically how the role of God's image bearer points to Christ."
— Beth
The hosts discuss how the concept of humans being created in God's image foreshadows Christ's role and nature. Beth highlights several critical connections:
Alexa adds further depth by discussing the repetition of God's creative work in Genesis 1:
"[03:58]…the repetition we see in the passage of God being creator.… it emphasizes that this entire world and everything in it was made by God's own hands."
— Alexa
Beth draws a parallel between God's generosity in the creation account and His promises in the New Testament:
"[03:23]…how generous God is, even from the very beginning of creation. In Matthew 7:11, Jesus tells us that God delights in giving good gifts to his children… He blessed his people… he clearly tells them what that role is and what their job is."
— Beth
This reflection underscores the consistency of God's character throughout Scripture, highlighting His desire to bless and guide His creation.
Both hosts acknowledge the difficulty in identifying Christological elements in Old Testament passages. They offer encouragement and practical advice for listeners facing similar challenges:
Beth and Alexa conclude the episode by expressing their hope that listeners find value in their detailed study sessions. They invite listeners to continue their journey through Genesis, promising further unpacking of the first chapter in the upcoming episodes.
"[04:52]…we're looking forward to studying God's Word with you again tomorrow. Bye friends."
— Alexa
