Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily Grace. This year, we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study, Christ in All of Scripture. Each week, we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire biblical story, but the center of it here. Hey, everyone. Welcome back to the Year in the Bible podcast. My name is Alexa and I'm joined by my co host, Beth. Hello.
A
Today we are jumping into day two of week three, where we're gonna go deeper into the passage that we annotated yesterday, as well as look at some of the surrounding verses. So today in our study, we were asked to read all of Genesis 1.
B
Yeah. And there's just so much that we could say about Genesis 1. But to help us dive a little deeper into this chapter, we're going to spend a little bit talking about where this Old Testament chapter falls in the biblical story and what we learn about God from this passage. And that's actually what we're going to explore every Tuesday on this season of the podcast. So, Beth, why don't you tell us a little bit about the context of this passage? Where are we in the biblical story?
A
Yeah, for this passage, this is a very easy answer. We are at the very beginning, Genesis 1:1 is the very beginning of the biblical story and the very beginning of the entire story of the world. And so, yeah, this story is incredibly important for the rest of the biblical story. It sets the tone for how to read the rest of scripture. It sets the tone for who the like central characters are in the rest of scripture. And it's just really, really important that we get just a good grasp on what Genesis 1 is telling us in order for us to be able to understand the rest of the context of the meta narrative of scripture. So two very specific things that it does is it tells us about our created purpose. That is just really helpful for us as we're reading the Bible, but also as we're seeking to live our lives in a way that glorifies God and it also reveals essential aspects of God's character. And I think that those two things, if we keep those in focus as we're reading Genesis 1, can be really helpful to guide us as we interpret it. We can all look around and see that our world does not reflect what we read about in Genesis 1, and we will learn more about why that is next week. But until then, it's important that we see the way things were created to be and the purpose that God had for us and for all of creation. Because, as it says in our study, God will always fulfill the purposes for which he created us and our world.
B
I love that quote. I think that really helps to show us just how faithful God is and how God will be faithful to bring about his purpose for his creation. You know, you mentioned that Genesis 1 is important because it reveals essential aspects of God's character. That leads perfectly into the second question we want to be asking every Tuesday. What does this passage teach us about God? So could you unpack that a little more?
A
Yeah, of course. The most essential aspect of God that is revealed here in Genesis 1 is that he is our Creator. We see that in the very first verse, that in the beginning, God created. Right. It's the very first thing that's ever said about God in the Bible. But he's not only our Creator, he's also the Creator of all things. And so this is important because it reveals just how much power and how much authority God has over us as well as the rest of creation. It points us towards his sovereignty, towards his rule over creation, and towards his worthiness of glory. It shows us that he is deserving of the utmost praise because he is our Creator and our King. But it also shows us our purpose as well, which is to bring him glory. So since we see that God is worthy of glory, we then get to see that we are the ones that he created to glorify Him. The Westminster Confession answers the question, what is the chief end of man? So what is man's purpose? And it says that it is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. And we see that so well represented here in Genesis 1. I think one of the best summaries of how God's creation reflects his glory is actually found in Psalm 8. Alexa, would you mind reading that for us?
B
Yeah. Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your name. Throughout the earth you have covered the heavens with your majesty. From the mouths of infants and nursing babies, you have established a stronghold on account of your adversaries in order to silence the enemy and the avenger. When I observe your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you set in place. What is a human being, that you remember him, a son of man, that you look after him. You made him little less than God and crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler over the works of your hands. You put everything under his feet, all the sheep and oxen as well as the animals in the wild, the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea that pass through the currents of the seas. Lord our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth.
A
You see, creation causes David to worship and glorify God and to see him for who he truly is and also to see humanity in light of God's greatness. What is a human being that you are mindful of him is what it says. See, God is so great and powerful and that is displayed in all of creation. Yet he is mindful of us. He created us too, and in his image and he gave us a life and a purpose. And yeah, just to summarize that Genesis 1 teaches us that God is our all powerful Creator who is worthy of all glory. And even so, he cares for us, plans to use us for his glory, and desires a relationship with us.
B
That's such a good reminder of who God is. That's just definitely something that I want to carry with me as I go about my day and this week especially as I go out and enjoy God's creation around me. Well, that's all that we have for you today. Be sure to join us tomorrow when we talk about the Annotation day on Colossians 1. Bye friends.

In the third week of Season 4, "A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace" delves into the foundational passages of Genesis 1:1, 26-31. Hosted by Alexa and Beth from The Daily Grace Co., this episode continues their comprehensive exploration of Scripture through the "Christ in All of Scripture" study. The goal is to unveil the interconnectedness of the Old and New Testaments, highlighting how every part of the Bible points to Jesus.
Beth opens the discussion by situating Genesis 1 at the very beginning of the biblical narrative and the creation story. She emphasizes the chapter's pivotal role in setting the tone for the entire Bible, introducing key themes and characters that resonate throughout Scripture.
Beth (00:38):
“Today we are jumping into day two of week three, where we're gonna go deeper into the passage that we annotated yesterday, as well as look at some of the surrounding verses.”
Alexa (01:17):
“This story is incredibly important for the rest of the biblical story. It sets the tone for how to read the rest of scripture. It sets the tone for who the like central characters are in the rest of scripture.”
Alexa outlines two primary objectives of Genesis 1:1, 26-31:
Our Created Purpose: Genesis 1 elucidates the purpose behind humanity's creation, which is to glorify God. This understanding is crucial not only for interpreting the Bible but also for living a life that honors God.
Revelation of God's Character: The passage offers profound insights into God's nature, particularly His role as Creator and His sovereignty over all creation.
Beth (02:37):
“I love that quote. I think that really helps to show us just how faithful God is and how God will be faithful to bring about his purpose for his creation.”
The hosts delve deeper into the attributes of God revealed in Genesis 1:
Alexa (03:03):
“The most essential aspect of God that is revealed here in Genesis 1 is that he is our Creator. We see that in the very first verse, that in the beginning, God created.”
Sovereignty and Authority: God’s ultimate rule over creation is a recurring theme, affirming His dominance and rightful place as King.
Worthy of Glory: As Creator and King, God deserves all honor and praise. Humans are created in His image with the primary purpose of glorifying Him.
Alexa (03:03):
“It points us towards his sovereignty, towards his rule over creation, and towards his worthiness of glory.”
To further illustrate God's glory reflected in creation, Beth reads Psalm 8, which beautifully complements Genesis 1 by highlighting humanity's elevated status and responsibility.
Beth (04:15):
“Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your name. Throughout the earth you have covered the heavens with your majesty... You made him little less than God and crowned him with glory and honor...”
Alexa (05:01):
“Creation causes David to worship and glorify God and to see him for who he truly is and also to see humanity in light of God's greatness.”
Humanity’s Unique Role: Genesis 1 positions humans uniquely as bearers of God’s image, tasked with ruling over creation and glorifying Him.
God’s Faithfulness: The hosts highlight God's unwavering commitment to fulfilling His creative purposes, ensuring that His plans for creation and humanity are realized.
Alexa (02:37):
“As it says in our study, God will always fulfill the purposes for which he created us and our world.”
Alexa (05:40):
