Hey friends, welcome back to Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm joined by my co host for the week, Antonisha. Hey friends, today we're going to be going deeper into the passage that we annotated yesterday, Psalm 110:1. So to start us off, Antonisha, can you tell us where this passage fits in the biblical story?

[Antonisha]

Yeah. So this is a psalm written by David during his rule as king of Israel. As we know, David was called a man after God's own heart, even though he made some pretty unwise decisions throughout his rule. But even so, God made a covenant with David to give him an heir that would rule on the throne forever. At this point in biblical history, Israel is still waiting on the Messiah. But the promise that God made to David is one that they're holding on to with hope for future redemption.

Yeah, it's interesting to read this psalm after having studied 2 Samuel 6:7 a few weeks back. There seems to be a connection here to the covenant that God made with David. You know, there is a Lord being discussed in this passage who receives a heavenly throne and authority over enemies. And I think this points us back to what God promised to David of a a king who would have an eternal throne and kingdom. So it's neat to see that connection. So what about God's character? Is there anything that we can learn from this passage about God's character?

Yeah, this verse, along with the entirety of Psalm 110, really speaks to God's rule and reign over all things in the ancient near east where David lived to sit at a king's right hand, meant to share in the authority that the king possessed. So this passage reminds us that God is the true king of the universe. He has the power to overthrow his enemies and to rescue his people. And his power cannot be matched or thwarted.

Yeah, that's so good. I feel like it can be hard at times to remember God's power because we can't see see him. But God is the king of everything. Like you said. And right now he is ruling and reigning, and even the rulers of his earth can't compare to the authority and control that he has. So it's just, yeah, really beautiful to to think about God's power and authority over all things.
