Welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it.
C
Hi friends. Hey friends. Welcome back to A Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm joined by my co host for the week, Katie.
D
Hey friends.
C
This week we looked at Isaiah 5:1:7 and John 15:1:5 and learned that Jesus is the true vine through which God's people can thrive. Jesus is the redemption of God's vineyard in Isaiah 5 and we want to now consider what we learned about Jesus and apply it to our own lives. So Katie, how do you plan on applying the passages from this week?
D
Oh, there are so many ways to apply this week's study and I think that's what I love about studying the Isaiah vineyard passages so much, especially when connected to John 15. One of the most humbling applications from this passage for me is Jesus's words, you can do nothing without me. We see this in Isaiah's parable, don't we? Israel could not grow good grapes on its own. They choose the wayward path time and time again and so would I without Jesus. I think that sometimes my self sufficiency can be sneaky and I can go through the motions of life or accomplish a busy day and just forget to live out of Christ's sufficiency and not my own. I wonder why I'm stressed or overwhelmed. And then it hits me. I've forgotten to abide in Christ today and I just have been going through the motions. I cannot produce anything good unless I am abiding in Christ. And so if Jesus is the vine and I am the branch, the thriving that I desire to have, cannot come apart from him. He's the one who gives life apart from him. I will wither. And I think that I feel that in my day to day life.
C
That's so good Katie. And I'm, I'm right there with you. I am just so prone to be self sufficient too. And this passage just really challenges me to depend on Christ rather than myself for everything. And you know we mentioned the word remain or abide just now and earlier this week as well. But what does it mean to remain or to abide?
D
Yeah, I think it's helpful to look at some of the synonyms for remain, or as some translations say, abide. I love this word. And in the context of Jesus speaking here, other synonyms like continue or dwell or endure could be applicable. That kind of helps us form an understanding. I think of verse five. It says continue in me and I in you, or dwell in me or I in you. In the context of John 15, abiding requires us to realize where our life's source comes from. Remember, we can do nothing without him, right? So he is the true vine and we are the branches remaining. Or abiding means that we recognize our dependence and lean into him as our source of what we need. I know that I am quick to just move through my day accomplishing tasks that I know need to get done. But the question here is, am I leaving space to to abide? Am I depending on God or my own strength? The world, you know, celebrates independence and success and we have such a beautiful opportunity to walk daily with the Lord in need and dependence. And I'll give you a quick example. So last week there was a wreck on the way to my son's preschool and what is normally about a half hour drive was an hour and ten minutes stop of the traffic with an very impatient four year old. I spent so much energy trying to find a back road short cut, I called my husband to complain. I almost turned around, but then I realized the anxiousness stirring on my heart and I prayed it was nothing fancy, just repenting for the bad attitude and trying to control the uncontrollable. And I asked for peace in a stressful moment. And after that I just decided to turn to my son and turn down the music and have a conversation with him about sometimes slow things are good. We talked about how thankful we were for the sunshine. We talked about what he was excited to learn at school. And you know what, it was just such a great reminder of how taking that moment to pray just really impacts our everyday lives. My mood was turned around in that moment and I was late to school with my son. But I did have a conversation that engaged his heart and I'm sure that I wouldn't have had that without the traffic that morning. So it's just a real, a real example of how abiding in Christ just impacts our day to day lives.
C
I love that. What a sweet moment and great reminder that in every moment, but especially in the moments that we feel anxious, we can just slow down and choose to rest in Jesus and trust him to help us. We're going to now transition to a time of prayer, so after Katie reads each prompt, we encourage you to spend some time in prayer to the Lord.
D
Praise God for not abandoning us in our sin and restoring us in Christ. Foreign Thank Jesus for abiding with us. Always ask that God would teach you what it means to abide with him on a daily basis. Thank you so much for joining us this week, friends. We hope that you will join us next week as we continue seeing Christ in all of Scripture.

Episode: S4: Week 34 Day 5: Applying Isaiah 5:1-7 & John 15:1-5
Date: August 22, 2025
Hosts: Alexa & Katie
In this episode, Alexa and Katie discuss how the metaphor of the vineyard in Isaiah 5 and Jesus’s teaching about Himself as the true vine in John 15 converge to reveal Christ as both the fulfillment and the hope for God’s people. The hosts focus on practical applications from these passages—how the call to “abide” in Christ transforms daily living, dependence, and spiritual fruitfulness. The conversation is deeply personal, encouraging listeners to recognize their need for Jesus in every part of life.
The episode closes with practical, prayerful application:
Warm, encouraging, and honest—Alexa and Katie model vulnerability as they invite listeners to recognize their need for Christ not only as biblical truth but as a moment-by-moment resource for life. By connecting the Old Testament and New Testament, the episode encourages a holistic view of scripture—seeing Jesus as the thread that ties the entire Bible together and the one who enables true spiritual fruitfulness.
