Welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study, Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire biblical story, but the center of it. Hi, friends. Welcome back to another week of A Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm here with my co host, Beth.
A
Hey everyone. So this week we're going to be looking at Amos 9, 11, 12 and Acts 15, 15, 19, and we're going to learn that God has brought restoration and salvation through Christ for all people. We're going to start off our study this week by looking at Amos 9, 11, 12 and discuss our annotations of this passage. So let me go ahead and read that for us. Get us started. In that day, I will restore the fallen shelter of David. I will repair its gaps, restore its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old, so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear my name. This is the declaration of the Lord. He will do this. So, Alexa, how did this annotation day go for you?
B
It was good. This is an interesting passage. And just reading this passage alone leaves us with a lot of questions. We might ask, what is the fallen shelter of David and what is the remnant of Edom? And those are great questions that we're not going to answer today. But don't worry, we will. So just looking at this passage, there were a few things that I gleaned. One of the prompts in today's annotation day asked us to look at the amount of times the words I will appear in the passage. We see that phrase appear twice. But we also read in verse 12, this is the declaration of the Lord, he will do this. We've talked throughout this podcast about how we see the phrase I will repeat itself throughout Scripture, which just reminds us of God's faithfulness, what God promises He will accomplish. So we see that truth about God's character happening here. I also love how the last verse in verse 12 is phrased. This is the declaration of the Lord. He will do this. There is a lot of authority in that statement. God is the one promising these things, and he is the one who is going to bring these things to pass. And because these things are promised by a God who is all powerful and never goes back on his word, the people whom God is talking to could know with certainty that God will be faithful to do what he is saying.
A
I love what you said there about there being authority in that statement. I think that's such a good observation. Do you have any other takeaways from your annotations?
B
Yeah, I just wanted to point out the language of the fallen shelter of David. Like I said, we're not going to talk about what that means today, but when we see David's name appear in the prophets, it often points us forward to the Messiah. So what God is saying here about the fallen shelter of David was probably causing his people to consider the promises that he made to David in 2 Samuel 7 and how these promises would ultimately be fulfilled through the promised Messiah, which we know is Jesus Christ. We'll talk more about that this week, but we can know generally from this passage that the restoration that God promised will be ultimately fulfilled in Christ.
A
Yeah, I am for sure looking forward to unpacking this passage more tomorrow and throughout this week. Well, that is all that we have for you today. Join us tomorrow as we go deeper into these things and learn what this passage means by the fallen shelter of David. We will see you then.
