Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of Scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but but the center of it. Hi everyone. Welcome to Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm here with my co host, Beth.
A
Hey friends.
B
Today we'll be looking at our New Testament passage for this week, which is John 12:12, 16. Let me go ahead and read that for us. The next day, when the large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took palm branches and went out to meet him. They kept shouting, hosanna. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel. Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, do not be afraid, daughter Zion, look, your King is coming. Sitting on a donkey's colt, his disciples did not understand these things at first. However, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him. So Beth, tell us about your annotations.
A
So there are a lot of things that we can take note of in this passage. First, I thought that the first two verses were fascinating. We see that there is a large crowd who heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, who met him and proclaimed that the King of Israel had arrived. When thinking about this passage from Zechariah that we annotated earlier this week, it sounds like this crowd saw Jesus as the fulfillment of that passage. They were rejoicing as Zechariah had told them to, because the king was there. But I thought this was super interesting in contrast with what we read about the disciples in the last verse of the passage. They didn't understand this connection until much later.
B
Yeah, that's interesting. The people seem to understand, but Jesus's own disciples, who have been walking with him for a while now, didn't. But it is encouraging that it clicks for them later. Is there anything else that you wanted to point out?
A
Yeah, I wanted to talk about God's attributes. In verses 14 through 15, we see God's sovereignty and how he orchestrated all of these things in order to fulfill the words that he had spoken to Zechariah. He not only keeps his word, but he has the power to and the ability to keep it. And then of course we see a lot of words and phrases that point us to Christ in this passage, so I thought I could list some of those out and share what I thought they were telling me about Jesus. So I highlighted that he was coming to Jerusalem, and so we see that this is fulfilling the mission His Father has given to him. I highlighted that he came in the name of the Lord, which is the same thing as I just mentioned, that he's fulfilling the mission that God had given to him. And then I highlighted that he is the King of Israel. He's not just a mere man, he is this promised and victorious king. And then I also highlighted Jesus was glorified in that last verse, which is foreshadowing the things that are to come. So the cross, his resurrection, and his ascension.
B
Super helpful. It's exciting to see the promises that God made about the promised Messiah seen here in today's passage. So God has been faithful to bring his promised King who will restore and redeem his people. Well, I am looking forward to talking more about this passage tomorrow and its connection to Christ. So we will see you then. Thank you for listening to today's episode of A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace.
