Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the New, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it.
C
Hey friends, welcome back to Year in the Bible. I'm Alexa and I'm here with my co host Beth.
A
Hi everyone. So far this week we have studied Malachi 31 5, and now we're going to turn to the New Testament and study Mark 11:15 18. This passage reads, they came to Jerusalem and he went into the temple and began to throw out those buying and selling. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves and would not permit anyone to carry goods through the temple. He is teaching them. Is it not written, my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations, but you have made it a den of thieves. The chief priests and scribes heard it and started looking for a way to kill him. They were afraid of him because the whole crowd was astonished by his teaching. So Alexa, do you want to tell us about your annotations for this passage?
B
Yeah, for sure.
C
One of the prompts asks us to highlight what Jesus does in verse 15. I think it's perhaps easy to go right to highlighting Jesus's actions of throwing out those buying and selling, overturning the money changers tables and the chairs of those selling doves. But before we go to highlight those.
B
Things, I took notice and I highlighted.
C
The phrase he went into the temple.
B
If you have been following along with.
C
Us so far this week, that phrase should jump out to you a bit in light of what we talked about with Malachi 31 5. But I'll save that discussion for tomorrow.
A
Yeah, that's great. I definitely went right to the overturning tables portion and skipped right over that. So I'm really glad you pointed it out. You are so right. Before he can do any of those things, he has to first go into the temple and see that these things are happening. And I cannot wait to talk more about that tomorrow. Is there anything else that you wanted to cover today?
C
Yeah, some other things that I noticed was in the passage that Jesus quotes in Mark 11:17, Jesus doesn't only say that the temple is to be a house of prayer, but that it's to be a house of prayer for all nations. And then I thought the priest's response was interesting. Without getting too much into interpretation, the priests should have seen Jesus's actions as a good thing, but their fear and pride caused them to look for ways to kill Jesus instead.
A
For sure, what interesting observations. All this really builds the suspense for tomorrow, so I'm really excited to talk more explicitly about all of these connections. Be sure to tune in tomorrow to hear us unpack all of the ways that these two passages reveal Christ.

Podcast: A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace
Episode: S4: Week 50 Day 3: Annotating Mark 11:15-18
Date: December 10, 2025
Hosts: Alexa (C) & Beth (A/B)
In this episode, Alexa and Beth take a close look at Mark 11:15-18, focusing on Jesus’ dramatic cleansing of the temple. They explore how this New Testament event connects to Old Testament prophecy (specifically Malachi 3:1-5, covered earlier in the week), helping listeners see Christ as the central figure in all of Scripture. Their conversation emphasizes the purpose of the temple, Jesus’s authority, and the significance of His actions in light of God’s redemptive story.
Walking Through the Text
Quote, Alexa [01:19]:
Connecting to Earlier Study
Beth admits she often jumps straight to the dramatic actions and appreciates Alexa’s reminder that Jesus’s entrance into the temple is significant.
This phrase ties Jesus to the Old Testament promise of “the Lord suddenly coming to His temple” (Malachi 3).
Quote, Beth [01:48]:
Alexa highlights that Jesus quotes scripture, emphasizing the temple’s intended purpose: not just as a house of prayer, but for “all nations” (Mark 11:17).
This underscores God’s heart for the inclusion of all peoples, echoing the global scope of redemption found throughout the Bible.
Quote, Alexa [02:06]:
Alexa notes the tragic reaction of the chief priests and scribes—they attempt to silence Jesus instead of recognizing the truth in His actions.
The hosts reflect on how fear and pride can blind people to God’s work.

This brief but thoughtful episode encourages listeners to slow down and carefully observe Scripture, noticing even the smallest details and their connections from Old to New Testament. Alexa and Beth’s discussion about Mark 11:15-18 points to Jesus’s fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, the inclusive purpose of God’s house, and the spiritual blindness that can come from hardened hearts—all setting the stage for richer study in future episodes.
