Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily Grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study, Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
B (0:17)
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but but the center of it. Hey, everyone. Welcome to another episode of A Year in the Bible. My name is Alexa and I'm here with my co host, Beth Friends.
A (0:37)
So today we are jumping from the first chapters of the Bible to the final chapter of the Bible. We are going to be looking at our annotations for Revelation 22:13 today. Alexa, will you go ahead and read that passage for us?
B (0:49)
Then he showed me the river of the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the city's main street. The tree of life was on each side of the river, bearing 12 kinds of fruit, producing its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree are for healing the nations and there will no longer be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city and his servants will worship him. So, Beth, how did annotating this passage go for you?
A (1:15)
First, I just want to say how much I love this passage. I think the imagery is just so beautiful. So I thought that I would kind of just walk through all of that imagery and unpack it a little bit based on the context of this passage and what I noticed in these verses particularly. So the first image is a river, the river of life. The river is clear and it flows from Jesus's throne down through the city's main street. So now we see that this is a city. I don't know about you, but when I read this, my mind pictures, buildings and streets and parks and castles and homes, and it's all surrounding this beautiful, clear river. The study told us to look at Revelation 21 to learn more about this city. So when we do that, we see that this city is the new Jerusalem. If you remember, from all of our time in the Old Testament, throughout the year, Jerusalem is the capital city of ancient Israel. It is where King David reigned, and it is where the prophet said that the Messiah, the king from David's line, would reign forever and ever. So next, when we go Back to Revelation 22, the next piece of Imagery that we see is the Tree of Life. And my brain breaks a little every time I read this passage cuz it says that the tree is on each side of the river. And I don't know how a tree can be on either side of a river. You can. So I just imagine that it's a huge tree and the whole city is surrounding it and it has to be big because its leaves are going to heal all the nations. And finally our attention is brought back to the central focus, the throne of the Lamb. And we are told that his servants will worship him.
