Welcome to A Year in the Bible with daily grace. This year we want to spend a few minutes with you every day walking through our study, Christ in All of Scripture. Each week we will dive deeply into two passages of scripture, one from the Old Testament and one from the new, seeing how they connect and point to Jesus.
Beth
Whether you are doing the study yourself or just following along with us here, we are hopeful that through studying these passages each week, you will see how Christ is not only present throughout the entire Biblical story, but the center of it.
Alexa

Alexa
Hi everyone.
Co-host
We are back for another week of diving deeply into scripture. Today we're going to be looking at day one of week eight. And so the verse that we annotated today is Genesis 50:20, which is a short verse and it says, you planned evil against me. God planned it for good, to bring about the present result, the survival of many people. So Alexa, tell us how this annotation day was for you.
Alexa
Yeah. Okay, so I have to admit that I'm a little biased because I'm like 95% sure that I was the one who wrote the week of this study. So it was a little hard to go into this week without any prior knowledge. But I did try very hard, the best I could to put myself in the shoes of someone doing this for the first time. And so I thought it could be helpful to talk about the first two prompts because people might have found those prompts hard, especially because this is such a short verse like you said, Beth. So the first prompt asks us to highlight any words or phrases that point to Christ. I highlighted the phrase you planned evil against me because that reminded me of how the Pharisees plotted against Jesus to arrest and kill him. And then I highlighted the phrase the survival of many people because it made me think of how it's through Christ's death that many people are able to be saved.
Co-host
I love that. So what about prompt number two where it talks about the attributes of God? Did you notice any of God's attributes in this verse?
Alexa
Yeah, I noticed two attributes of God. The first is that God is sovereign. We see in this passage that it was God's plan to bring about the survival of many people. So even though there was a plan against this person, who is Joseph, and we'll talk a little bit more about this tomorrow, God had a greater plan and he worked through the evil actions to lead the to the survival of many people. So we see God's sovereignty in that situation. And then we also see God's deliverance because it was his good plan that brought about people's survival. So God in His mercy desired to deliver people. And it is by sovereignly working through the evil plot that God brought about that deliverance.
Co-host
Wow. That's so good. What a good and comforting reminder. I think we all often struggle to see how God is present and working in difficult circumstances, so I'm incredibly thankful for stories like these that remind us how much bigger God is than us and how much wiser he is than us. Yeah, so I'm just excited for this week of study because I think it's going to answer a lot of questions that we and our listeners have about. Yeah, how to process really challenging and difficult things. But that is all we have for today for the annotations. And so tomorrow we're going to look further and deeper into this verse in its context. And so we are excited. Excited to see you then.

Genesis 50:20 (NIV):
"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."
The episode focuses on unpacking this verse, emphasizing its significance in illustrating God's sovereignty and deliverance.
Alexa shares her experience annotating the verse:
"I highlighted the phrase 'you planned evil against me' because that reminded me of how the Pharisees plotted against Jesus to arrest and kill him. And then I highlighted the phrase 'the survival of many people' because it made me think of how it's through Christ's death that many people are able to be saved."
— Alexa, [01:02]
This annotation draws a direct parallel between Joseph's adversity and the trials faced by Jesus, highlighting the redemptive purpose behind suffering.
The discussion identifies two key attributes of God evident in Genesis 50:20:
Sovereignty
Alexa explains:
"We see in this passage that it was God's plan to bring about the survival of many people. So even though there was a plan against this person, who is Joseph, and we'll talk a little bit more about this tomorrow, God had a greater plan and he worked through the evil actions to lead to the survival of many people."
— Alexa, [02:06]
This underscores God's ultimate control over events, ensuring His purposes are fulfilled despite human intentions.
Deliverance
Alexa continues:
"And then we also see God's deliverance because it was his good plan that brought about people's survival. So God in His mercy desired to deliver people. And it is by sovereignly working through the evil plot that God brought about that deliverance."
— Alexa, [02:06]
God's compassionate intent to save humanity is emphasized, demonstrating His unwavering commitment to deliverance through divine intervention.
Beth adds her perspective on the discussion:
"I love that. So what about prompt number two where it talks about the attributes of God? Did you notice any of God's attributes in this verse?"
— Beth, [01:58]
Co-host reflects on the broader implications:
"What a good and comforting reminder. I think we all often struggle to see how God is present and working in difficult circumstances, so I'm incredibly thankful for stories like these that remind us how much bigger God is than us and how much wiser he is than us."
— Co-host, [02:49]
This sentiment resonates with listeners facing personal challenges, offering solace and reaffirming God's divine orchestration in their lives.
The hosts express enthusiasm for the ongoing study:
"I'm just excited for this week of study because I think it's going to answer a lot of questions that we and our listeners have about... how to process really challenging and difficult things."
