Scott, we're in Chronicles, 2nd Chronicles 7, 9 today, and we've been talking a lot about the Temple over the last several days. It's going to continue today. But we also have a very well known verse in scripture that comes in which, I mean, who would have thought, like a really well known verse comes out of two Chronicles, right?
A
Yeah, we'll get there. Yeah. Second Chronicles 2, 7, 14. But yeah, just kind of catch us up to speed. You know, they have built the temple, they've brought the ark into it. God's. We talked about yesterday, God's presence filled the, the temple, the cloud. And then Solomon had this amazing prayer of dedication in yesterday's chapters. Today we see God's response to Solomon's prayer. You know, we saw back in chapter one, God had appeared to Solomon. That's when he said, ask whatever you want. Solomon asked for wisdom. He appears to Solomon a second time here and assures him that he heard the prayer that we looked at yesterday. He promises to bless Israel if they obey, but he also warns about judgments if they disobey God. And, and that's where we come across that, that passage you're talking about 7 where God says, I'll read from the NIV. If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and heal their land. So this is a very, very well known verse. What we have to remember about this verse though, is that this is a promise God made specifically to the nation of Israel in the Old Testament. And so we see like in verse 13 he talks about like, if there's droughts or locust invasions or plagues that come upon the lands. And that's all from Deuteronomy 28. So that chapter was all about the blessings God would send to Israel if they were obedient to the law, as well as all the curses judgments he would bring upon Israel if they were disobedient to him. And so we need to keep that in mind when we read this verse. Like, and let me be clear, like, we should pray for the nations we live in. Absolutely. Like, pray for where you live. But we need to be careful not to like, assume this is a promise from God about the nation we live in today, wherever that might be, because we're not under that. That covenant that he had with Israel in the Old Testament, the Mosaic covenants. But I did love this comment from the study that such words can wash over the post exilic Israelites like cool and refreshing rain. Just what a glorious promise this verse is.
B
Yeah, definitely a great promise for them to cling to. So in the last couple chapters, we read some more details about Solomon and then he dies, like pretty, pretty abruptly, it feels like to me. Did it feel that way to you as you're going through these chapters?
A
It's like all of a sudden, well, all right, we're done with Solomon. But yeah, I mean, for the author of Chronicles, like, Solomon's importance has everything to do with his role in establishing the temple. Or to say it differently, his chief contribution to Israel was how he helped to facilitate the worship of God. But in addition to that, I think it's important to point out that something you see in chapters 8 and 9 is that life in Israel during Solomon's reign was great. I mean, this is a very prosperous time for Israel. I like to call this Israel's golden age. And then I was like, oh, it literally is like, there's so much gold everywhere. There's this fun comment about like, hell, silver is just so plentiful. It's basically worthless during Solomon's time. But you know, it's helpful to keep God's promises to Abraham in mind here as we read about Solomon's reign, because they are now a great nation. They are living in the land of Canaan that God bless that God promised to Abraham. And they are to an extent, blessing the nations shall be. Like, we see all these promises being fulfilled. So like, the Queen of Sheba comes to visit Solomon and is blessed by him. Essentially he's benefiting this foreign ruler. Life is good in these chapters, but as you mentioned, Solomon just dies and things will not stay great. A little peek ahead. But you know, we said this before in Chronicles. Like what we see here in these chapters though is just how good life can be when you are ruled by a good son of David. And this prosperous era in their history just causes me to really get excited about the new earth to come when David's son Jesus will come to reign, establish his kingdom over all the earth. I can't wait for that.
B
Yeah. Yeah, I think we're all awaiting that day for sure. I think my takeaway from these chapters, I'm going to call back to the very beginning of chapter seven. And you saw the fire come down and it consumed the sacrifice. God's glory filled the temple and the priests couldn't enter.
A
And.
B
And we see, you know, all throughout the Old Testament and even into the New Testament up until the point when Jesus dies, there's portions of the temple that can't be entered, or maybe there's certain specifications for entering them. I think I was already, like, to get way ahead of myself, like, thinking of Jesus's sacrifice and how that allows us to enter. And so it's a very different sacrifice than the one offered here, but it reminds us that Jesus sacrificing himself does allow us to enter God's presence. And what an amazing thing that is for us to remember today as we walk through these chapters. All right, that's gonna wrap up 2 Chronicles 7 through 9. Scott, I always love to do this. You mentioned the studies earlier and a portion. And if. If you're curious about those studies, you wanna check those out, we're in volume two right now. You can get those at the link in the show notes. We'd love for you to follow along with us, not only on the podcast, but also in the Bible studies. So you can check those out at the link in the show notes. We'll be back tomorrow with more from 2 Chronicles.
