Hey, this is Shelby and C.J. we're in the book of Nehemiah today. We're in chapters four through six. So Nehemiah, he's gotten permission. He has come back. He is beginning to kind of build walls. But we said yesterday he's starting to face some opposition similar to what we read in Ezra. How's Nehemiah doing as we pick up here in chapter four?
C.J.
So Nehemiah continues to do well, only some of the gates and some of the walls are up. And in Nehemiah 4, he continues his rebuilding efforts. And he's accomplishing so much and he's doing so well that we see Sanballat again pop up, this sort of enemy of Nehemiah. And he gathers a bunch of people to resist the Jews in their repair efforts. And the text says that the people are Sanballat and the Sumerians to the north, Tobiah and some of the Arabs to the south, the Ashdodites to the west, and the Ammonites to the east. So in other words, like, the Jews have total opposition all around on all sides. And that's sort of the image that's depicted for us here. But despite all that, he continues on and he. And he's successful. And then we're introduced to a new problem. In Nehemiah 5, Nehemiah becomes angry because brothers are enslaving brothers. So we've seen this sort of theme in Judges, even how what began or what started as a problem on the outside of the people also ends up popping up inside or among the people. And that's the same sort of situation that's going on here. Sandball it has. He's the guy out there causing problems. He's the Canaanite, for lack of a better word. And then also now we have a problem from within where people aren't treating each other well. And Nehemiah is very angry about this, how brothers are enslaving brothers. And then we return back to Nehemiah 6 with Sanballat, who is scheming again. And he's scheming to the degree that he wants to kill Nehemiah. But Nehemiah kind of senses that that's what's going on. So he constantly avoids all of his plots.

Yeah, that's a really interesting exchange to read there. But what do we take away from these chapters is anything that we can just apply to our own lives.
C.J.
Yeah, I see here, and you mentioned it briefly last episode, that Nehemiah is zealous and he has a singular mission and a singular purpose, because he feels like that's what God has called him to do. And I think that's admirable. And it also reminds us of Jesus and his singular mission. I'm reminded of, like, the garden where Jesus had the singular mission in his mind. And even though it was difficult and in his humanity, he felt like this was tough. He says, if it's possible, may this cup pass from me, but your will be done. I feel like Nehemiah's in a similar situation where probably his humanness, he wants to run away and he doesn't want to deal with all of these issues and all this opposition which ultimately leads us to Christ, who perfectly embodied his mission, I guess you could say.
Shelby
Yeah, I love that takeaway. I think my takeaway for these chapters is Nehemiah's confidence in the Lord. In the midst of opposition, you see him just totally confident that the Lord is going to protect them and sustain their work. And I was really struck by that as I was reading through and given how far we've come in Scripture and how many times we've noted the faithfulness of the Lord. I saw Nehemiah trusting in God's faithfulness in this circumstance. We don't always see God's people doing that. And so I was appreciative of seeing that. And it was a reminder me to do that in my own life. So thank you, CJ for walking us through Nehemiah 4 through 6. We're going to keep chugging along in this book tomorrow.
