Eleven states into this series — Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Washington DC, Florida, Georgia — Anti-Black led the cumulative hate crime data every single time. Hawaii is different.

Anti-White incidents lead Hawaii's cumulative bias type data at 119. Anti-Black comes second at 76. Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander is the largest offender race category at 116. Hawaii is the most racially diverse state in the country — white residents are a demographic minority at approximately 25 percent of the population. And the only federal case on the DOJ page involves two Hawaiian men sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for attacking a white man moving into Kahakuloa Village on Maui — one of the defendants saying during the attack: no white man is ever going to live here.

That is a hate crime. Prosecuted as such. Convicted. And it sits inside a state whose indigenous people had their kingdom illegally overthrown by American businessmen backed by U.S. Marines in 1893 — a fact the United States Congress formally acknowledged and apologized for in 1993.

This episode holds all of it. The inversion of the national pattern. The Kahakuloa case. The 11 incidents targeting Native Hawaiian people — in their own state, on their own islands. The beach and waterway location data unique to this series. And the honest analytical framework that the history of colonization, land dispossession, and cultural erasure requires — not as an excuse, but as context that any serious journalism demands.

Context does not excuse. It explains. And this series goes where the data goes — without flinching in either direction.
