You're listening to all of it on wnyc. I'm Alison Stewart and we continue our travel week with weekend getaways from New York City. With summer kind of coming to an end, you might want to sneak in some time away to relax and soak up the sun. Or maybe you want to spend some quality time with the family before the kids head back to school. So whether by car, bus, train, or ferry, there's a weekend getaway for everyone. Hannah Taui is associate editor at Conde Nast Traveler, and she's here to recommend some easy getaways from New York City. Welcome to the studio.
Hannah Towy
Thank you. Thanks for having me.
Alison Stewart
Listeners, we want to hear from you. What are your favorite weekend getaways? Do you have any tips for short trips? We're just talking about real quickies in and out of the city. Our number is 2124-3396-9221-2433. WNYC. We're going to start with New Jersey. We're gonna go to Asbury Park, New Jersey. How long is the drive? How long is the train ride?
Hannah Towy
Awesome. Yeah, I love Asbury. It's about a two hour drive from the city. You can take the commuter rail there. And there's also actually a ferry. The Sea Streak ferry heads into one of the towns pretty close by and then I think it's a 30 minute drive from there.
Host
What?
Alison Stewart
Asbury Park. Should I go see what's important about Asbury Park?
Hannah Towy
You gotta go for the music.
Guest
Yeah.
Hannah Towy
The legends, they cut their teet. The music along the boardwalk is really awesome. You know, it's been popularized with the new Bruce Springsteen documentary coming up. And it's just that quintessential Jersey shore beach town vibe. Super laid back. But definitely recommend planning a trip around the summer music series.
Alison Stewart
Is there anything special I should eat while I'm there? Just beach food.
Guest
Yeah.
Hannah Towy
Go for the seafood. Always. I'm a seafood fanatic. So whenever you're in a beach town like that, you know, go for the crab, go for the lobster.
Alison Stewart
Next on the list, Fairfield county in Connecticut. About an hour train ride via Metro North. Now, you grew up in this area? Yeah.
Guest
Yeah.
Alison Stewart
So I know that sometimes there are towns that have a lot of antiquing. Sometimes it can be a little Tony.
Host
Sometimes.
Alison Stewart
Where can I go if I'm from New York City, But I don't want to see city people.
Hannah Towy
Totally. Yeah. It's sort of hard in Connecticut nowadays, but I grew up in Norwalk, so it used to be the oyster capital of the United States. It's got that classic coastal feel on Long Island Sound. And I love recommending a quick trip out there. It's an hour on the train and you have South Norwalk, which is more of the downtown bar scene. You have the beaches, Rowe Inns, a really cute walkable neighborhood with some great food options as well. And then Litchfield, Connecticut has also been having a moment this year. There's been a ton of new boutique hotel openings, more of those antiques, classic woodsy vibes. New Canaan is also super well known for that and their architecture. Some great food options as well. And then Greenwich, a little closer to the city there, also on Long Island Sound. Have more of that sailing, yacht club vibe and great shopping.
Alison Stewart
But I do like Norwalk. I think they're like, it's like right on the train rails. You can sit and watch the trains just come and go.
Guest
Yeah, yeah.
Hannah Towy
South Norwalk train station's right downtown. So you can hop off, walk downtown, get a bite, walk to the beach also.
Alison Stewart
Okay.
Host
We're staying in Connecticut.
Alison Stewart
Mystic, Connecticut has a maritime history.
Host
Yes.
Guest
Yeah.
Hannah Towy
Mystic has a lot of nautical lore. Mystic Pizza is one of my favorite films ever. You can walk down the bridge where she yells at her boyfriend from the fishing boats. But yeah, there's a ton of, you know, that's that classic New England coastal town. Great food options, great hotels, straight beaches, Lime right there too, is really great.
Host
What about the Mystic Seaport Museum?
Hannah Towy
Yeah, that's more in the touristy town area of it, but it's super cool. You get that nautical whaling history dating way back.
Alison Stewart
And I see here Nana's Bakery and Pizza is a really well known restaurant. What are they known for?
Hannah Towy
Pizza. You know, that's what sort of Mystic Pizza is based on.
Alison Stewart
Oh, really?
Guest
Yeah.
Hannah Towy
I'm not sure if that's that exact restaurant, but it's definitely a must visit when you're in town.
Alison Stewart
And the Oyster Club, is that a.
Host
Place I should check out? Yes.
Alison Stewart
No. Maybe so.
Guest
Yeah. Yeah.
Hannah Towy
Oysters are definitely the go to food in Mystic. You can get local oysters, cops, island oysters.
Alison Stewart
Nice listeners, we want to hear from you.
Host
What are your favorite weekend getaways? Do you have any tips for short trips? What are your favorite things to do outside of New York City? Do you have a place that you want to shout out? Call or text us at 2124-3396-9221-2433. W NYC. I'm speaking with associate editor from Conde Nast Traveler Hannah Towy about the best weekend getaways for from New York City. Let's talk to Nori on line one from Queens. Hi Nori, thanks for calling all of it.
Nori
Hi, great to be here. Great conversation.
Host
Where do you like to go?
Nori
I usually I've taken a lot of trips on the Megabus which leaves that 34th street near Jacob Javits center at an early 8, 7am or 8am Then I go to Philadelphia which is a skip, hop and a jump about two hours, a little bit less than that. And I'm there like 10am and I spend the whole day in Philadelphia visiting friends or fights or eating great food or all these wonderful things in Philadelphia. And then I get back on the latest bus on megabus. Let's use 7pm, 8pm or even later, they have one whatever is the latest buses. I'm back in one day back home. It's always a great trip and I bring friends over there and they just like wow, I can't believe I can't. I could do Philadelphia one day. Or I just take the Long Island Railroad. I'm in Queens, so I just take a Long island railroad to Long Island, Lido Beach, Long Beach, Southamptons, the Hamptons, Montauk, whatever have you on the South Shore or anywhere in Long Island. Skip hopping a jump. You know, it's one day trips if you want or two days if you want to extend it somewhere nice.
Host
Thanks so much for calling in. I was going to save the cities for the end of this, but I'll bring them up. Since Nori brought it up, you had Philadelphia on your list. It's about a two hour drive or an hour and 15 minutes via Amtrak. How does Philadelphia's art and history scene, how is it different than New York's?
Hannah Towy
Yeah, it's so easy for New Yorkers to forget about Philly. I had a best friend move there recently, so I've been spending more time there and it's really just incredible. The history, the architecture. And then my thing that I've started to like to do when I visit her is the concerts are much cheaper in Philly than in New York and they'll go right over from their New York tour. So you can, you can get there the same week, pay a fraction of the price and have a fun little adventure night out on the town.
Host
What's the Philadelphia art scene like?
Hannah Towy
It's pretty awesome and you can even just tell walking around the architecture. They have these beautiful townhomes, the old cobblestone street and some great museum options as well.
Host
Yeah, what's going on at the Philadelphia Museum of Art this summer.
Hannah Towy
I think the exhibits are rotating. I'm not exactly sure what's on display right now, but there's always great options.
Host
What do you do when you're hungry in Philadelphia?
Hannah Towy
Philly Cheesesteak? No, but there's a ton of hot new restaurants opening up in Philly, too, so you can get pretty similar to New York, whatever cuisine you're craving.
Host
This says Mystic Aquarium. Don't miss the beluga whales if you go to Mystic. Thank you so much for that text. Also, you had Boston, Massachusetts. You can go via the Acela. The Freedom Trail ride in Boston is really interesting. Can you tell me a little more about it?
Hannah Towy
Yeah, it's a walking history tour, I believe so. It's a really great way to plan your day through the Boston Common and stopping at these major historical sites. And I think they also list a couple of great restaurants and cafes as well. Boston is another one of those cities that it's perfect for a weekend getaway from New York. It has such a different vibe. You can go to more chill, relaxing neighborhoods. And then you can always tack on a Cape Cod extension as well. There's ferries and seaplanes. Seaplanes that head to P Town, which is always a blast.
Host
It's always. There's so much history in Boston when you get off, even just the train station, you turn right and left. It's like you're being in a history class once again. Which is one of the reasons I like to go to Boston.
Hannah Towy
Totally. Me too.
Host
This says Texas. The Glass House in New Canaan is a wonderful and easy day trip. Thanks for the tip. We want to hear from you. What are your favorite weekend getaways? Do you have any tips for short trips? What are your favorite things to do outside of New York? Do you have any. Any place you want to shout out? Give us a call or text. 2124-3396-9221-2433. WNYC My guest associate editor at Conde Nash Traveler, Hannah Tawi. She's talking about some of the best getaways for the weekend. I know where to start in. Let's go into the. To the islands.
Guest
How about that?
Hannah Towy
Yeah, let's do it.
Host
Shelter Island. Describe Shelter island for me. How do we get there?
Hannah Towy
Shelter Island. I'd say this is the more laid back, secluded alternative to the Hamptons. You can get there, take the train out as close as you can get, and then you have to take a ferry to Shelter Island. So you can go from Greenport or Amaganza. I Believe so. There's some really great boutique hotel options. You've got your the other side of the island. So you have the bay are where the beaches are and it's really, it's really chill. It's a totally different vibe than Southampton, Watermill, Bridgehampton, which is my sort of top advice for the Hamptons is figure out the vibe you're after and there will be a Hamlet as they say, that matches that. It's not, you know, don't get too caught up in in the scene if you don't want to be Fire Island.
Alison Stewart
So what's the difference between Fire island and Shelter Island?
Hannah Towy
Pretty big difference, I'd say. Fire island is a blast. It's been a queer haven for New Yorkers for a really long time and it's car free. So again, yeah, you get there by ferry and there's different neighborhoods with different vibes, but more of a party nightlife scene. Again, great beaches and then Kismet is the more laid back side of Fire Island. That's that barefoot beach feel.
Alison Stewart
This text says splish splash in Calverton, Long Island. Tons of rides, some intense, but there's lots for young kids as well. Google directions. It's near the end of the Long Island Expressway. Nothing cooler on a hot summer day. This says what about New Haven, Connecticut? Pizza and Yale museums. Yum. And this text says Bar Palomina in Philadelphia. Great non alcoholic bar near some amazing restaurants and nightlife. Thanks to all of our listeners for calling in. We're looking at weekend getaways from New York City with Hannah Towie. All right, we're still staying on the islands. Block island in Rhode Island. It's about a 2 1/2 hour Amtrak ride and then I have to take a ferry.
Host
What do I do?
Hannah Towy
Block island is really unique. I'm heading out there in September and they are, you know, up there with the Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket's of the of New England. But it's more laid back, not as many hotel and housing options. So it's a bit more of a trip to finesse. But once you get there there's incredible natural landscapes and rocky beaches and lighthouses and a really close knit town community and you can bike everywhere.
Host
I was going to ask, is that one you have to plan ahead for to stay over?
Hannah Towy
Yes, yeah, definitely. And even the ferry I would recommend making a reservation on pretty like at least a week in advance. But it's one of those. I'm going in September, which I was hesitant to disclose, but September is my favorite time to travel. They call it secret summer on Cape Cod. You still have that fantastic weather shoulder season. Yep. Less crowds. And the water's actually usually warmer than it is in June because it's been soaking up all that sun for the past couple months.
Host
Let's talk to Tanya on line three from Westchester.
Alison Stewart
Hey, Tanya, where are you going to go?
Guest
Hi.
Tanya
I would suggest Beacon, New York. It's an hour and a half train ride right from Grand Central. You have diabeacon, which is an incredible art installation museum. One of the things that's unique about this museum is that all of the art installations were built on site for the space. So the space itself is actually part of what you're looking at. It's not like painting stuck on a wall. The whole space is the exhibition. So that's really special. And you can't have that kind of a museum because it requires so much space. Other places. It's a vibrant arts community. A lot of artists who can't afford to live in the city have all moved up to Beacons. So this is a legitimately working, artist, thriving main street community. And the last thing I'll say is they have like, they have a great lit series where they have open mic. I don't know what day of the week that is. That is in the evening. So it might be hard to kind of come home from that. But there's so much there, and it's just. It's right on the Hudson. It's really a fun place.
Host
Thanks for the tip. This tech says day trip to the south mountain reservation. Some can take the train from Penn station to Melbourne, New Jersey. And basically across the street is the entry to miles and miles of TR trails. There's also a really cute bakery called live breads for some delicious treats after you hike or trail run. This says Philly art. The Rodin museum. Unique sculptures only found also in Paris. Oh, that is a good museum. I've been to that one. Got a lot of text. All right, going through them. Head up Route 9 out of the city. You will go up the east side of the Hudson. Between Germantown and Catskill is the Atlanta state historic site. Fred Frederick Edwin Church was a major figure in the Hudson river school of landscape painting. Built a historic home. You can check that out. Grounds for sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey. Someone else texted. Cold Spring, New York in Putnam Valley. It's a quaint town, Lots of antiquing and sweet mom and pop shops. We've got somebody on staff who would say, please don't go there. But that's okay. Chester, Connecticut, is an amazing small town. Art galleries, pottery studios, guitar stores, Little House Brewery, great restaurants. And close to the Connecticut river and the ocean. And then this one, Sandy Hook, New Jersey by ferry. Great day, Chip. Even if it's a nude beach.
Hannah Towy
Yeah, the fairies. Round trip. You can do that in a day.
Host
I wanted to ask you about the Hamptons because you did have the Hamptons on here. And a lot of people hear the Hamptons and they get a. They bristle like, I don't know if I can afford it. I don't know if I want to be around people who want to stand in line and pretend they're fancier than I am. Can you make a pitch for the Hamptons?
Hannah Towy
Oh, man.
Guest
Yeah.
Hannah Towy
I guess I'm always arguing against myself with this because I think the number one thing to start off with is the Hamptons is a much bigger area than you expect. And all the towns are very different from one another. So if you want the more laid back vibe. I love West Hampton. The surfing there is great. You have more of those chills, beach bars, that type of thing. They've also had a lot of new hotel openings this summer. And yeah, Montauk, of course, is, again, a totally different vibe. But, you know, it is what it is.
Guest
It is what it is.
Hannah Towy
And especially, I mean, I think East Hampton has a cooler art community there. The downtown is more of my scene. And it can definitely be tough if you don't own a Hamptons house or you don't get the invite to feel like you belong sometimes. And I totally understand that. But I do think there are towns that are the complete opposite of that atmosphere and are super welcoming and there's lots to do and lots of cool new hotel openings happening there.
Alison Stewart
What about Newport, Rhode Island? We're all hearing about that through the Gilded Age.
Guest
Yeah.
Alison Stewart
What will we experience when we go to Newport?
Hannah Towy
Newport's really cool. You got the Cliff Walk, where you go by all those mansions, the Gilded Age mansions. That's an incredible activity. And then the downtown is super fun, historic, great food and drink. They have the big sailing race in June. That's fun. And they come from Bermuda. So if you can plan a trip around that, that's awesome. And then, of course, the Newport Folk Festival is great to make a trip out of. But yeah, the beaches are great in Newport. It's closer than you think. You can surf there, too. And great hotels and Airbnbs.
Host
We've also. I've heard about this so much.
Alison Stewart
I've actually never been and I'm really curious about it. The Berkshires in Massachusetts. What will I experience if I go to the Berkshires?
Hannah Towy
Most people like heading to the Berkshires for fall foliage. It's incredible. The Berkshires is again, another one of those pretty massive regions with a ton of different towns. But yeah, you can do mountain biking, hiking, apple picking. And there's been an influx of New Yorkers post pandemic. So more of an art scene now as well. It's great. My, my aunt and uncle are up there and I love to visit.
Host
And how about the Finger Lakes in New York? This is a beautiful area. It's a little hard to get to like kind of devote yourself to being in the car for a little bit. But in terms of the Finger Lakes, what's exciting there?
Hannah Towy
Definitely the wine people mainly go for the wineries and the vineyards, which are incredible especially for, for New York. But there's also really cool history there. You have the Harriet Tubman House, Seneca Falls with the women's convention history. So history buffs love it. And then the lakes for, you know, summer fun. And the mountains, you got biking, hiking, tons of trails to explore. I've never been, so would love to get up there.
Host
Let's talk to Riley, who's calling in.
Hannah Towy
From the lower financial district.
Host
Hey Riley, thanks for taking the time to call, all of it.
Hannah Towy
Hi.
Riley
Hi. How are you doing?
Host
Great.
Riley
Yeah, I was just calling because I was going to talk about. I guess me and my friends took like a bus to. I'm honestly not sure how to pronounce it. It was like Mass Makapan or Matpin, I'm not entirely sure in New Jersey. And we went on this like little glamping trip and it was nice. There was like a little lake there that you could like get little canoes to go out on and even like ziplining and like rock wall climbing. So a lot of like fun outdoor activities on that glamping trip.
Host
I'm so glad you had a good time. This what this text says. Head to New Palt bike trails galore and beautiful boutiques. Eat at runa. Check out SUNY New Palt Campus Museum. This one says Highlands, New Jersey, an old seafaring town that you can reach easily by several ferries from New York City. You can spend the whole day biking at the small seaside town you've been on the Pompura Trail. Or head to the Sandy Hook National Seashore, which offers a beautiful beach as well as a seven mile walking trail along the bayfront. On the opposite side, the town has wonderful seafood restaurants and a little shop to enjoy. Thank you for those texts as well. Is there any place that I haven't mentioned that you just want to really shout out?
Guest
Yeah.
Hannah Towy
I mean, Cape Cod is sort of on the verge of too far to be a weekend getaway for me, but if you can add in a Friday or Monday. There's also more JetBlue flights now to Hyannis, which is like a 30 minute flight. So that's, that's my go to. But I have family up there and there's. There's nothing like it. It's. It's pretty awesome. Chatham, Provincetown, the. The National Seashore. It's beautiful. And then you have Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, which are also accessible by ferry from New York, which they restarted this year. It's five hours and I've heard it's a little bumpy.
Host
Yeah, they call it the Barfboat.
Hannah Towy
Yep, the Barf boat.
Host
But if you're somebody who doesn't get seasick, you can take the Barf boat up to Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard.
Hannah Towy
Yeah. Turn it into a party boat.
Host
My guest has been Associate editor, Conde Nast Traveler Hannah Tawi. She gave us some great weekend getaways from New York City. Thanks for your time today.
Hannah Towy
