Whoo.
Alison Stewart
That was Divinity Rocks performing Celebrate from her album Worldwide Play Date. The album is nominated for a Grammy this year in the best children's album category. That is a celebratory event that you get nominated for a Grammy. Why is it important to remember to celebrate?
WNYC Studios
Oh, man. We have to celebrate all the wins because it just keeps us lifted and it keeps us inspired to keep going.
Alison Stewart
Let's talk about it. Where were you when you found out you were nominated for a Grammy?
Divinity Rocks
Wow.
WNYC Studios
This time I was on a plane. I was headed to Atlanta, and it was a somber occasion because one of my best friends had lost her sister, and I was on my way to the funeral, of all places.
Alison Stewart
Oh, my.
WNYC Studios
And I got a note from my publicist that you were nominated, and I was so happy, I screamed out on.
Divinity Rocks
The plane, I'm nominated for a Grammy.
WNYC Studios
And all these people, they probably thought I was, like, a crazy person, Right? So I get home, and I immediately go to my mom's house and I.
Divinity Rocks
Got to hug her and love on her.
WNYC Studios
And we celebrated, and I was wrestling, you know, this idea of balancing and experiencing joy and pain at the same time.
Alison Stewart
They can both happen at the same time. They can.
WNYC Studios
They can.
Alison Stewart
That's a good lesson to learn. Yeah. You've been nominated for Grammys before.
WNYC Studios
Just one.
Alison Stewart
Is it like same old, same old, or is it still exciting?
Divinity Rocks
Of course it's still exciting. It's the Grammys for goodness Sake.
WNYC Studios
It is one of the most prestigious awards you can receive as, or even be nominated for as an artist and a musician. And we all dream of it. When we're little kids, we stand in the mirror and we give our Grammy speeches to ourselves.
Divinity Rocks
So it's always awesome.
Alison Stewart
Way back when, when you started to put together a worldwide play date, what would you describe as the. The overarching vision for that album?
WNYC Studios
I wanted this album to be fun. I wanted it to feel like 90s hip hop, where we're just jumping around on the playground with big, colorful outfits on, doing flips and choreography and having a good time. And I wanted everybody to get back to play. Feels like we've lost some of that.
Alison Stewart
So when you get an idea for a song that's going to be on this album, worldwide play date, what do you do? Do you get notes? Do you write it down? Do you keep it in your head? Let it, like, sort of, you know, ferment a little bit? What do you do?
WNYC Studios
I do all of those things. Oftentimes I'll record something in a voice note, some idea, some song, some rhythm, a beat, a bass line, a lyrical idea, and. And then I'll either get in front of my, you know, sit down with my daw. Most of the time it's logic, and I'll start laying out that idea. This album, I called up a really good friend of mine, Wayne Gerard, who's an incredible producer out of Detroit, and I told him that wanted to have a production collaborator on this album. And I told him about what I wanted it to feel like. I was like, I want it to.
Divinity Rocks
Be like the 90s. It's hip hop. It's fun, it's colorful. We're yelling, we're celebrating.
WNYC Studios
And he sent me the track celebrate. And I was like, you got it.
Alison Stewart
That is it. Now, when you're writing an album for children, I had children. I remember there were certain records I wanted to listen to, some I did not want to listen to.
Divinity Rocks
That's true.
Alison Stewart
You really have to, like, sort of this fine line between the kids can appreciate it, but so can the grownups. How can you tell when you've got a song that, like, really hits that spot?
Divinity Rocks
Wow.
WNYC Studios
You know, that was a goal of mine. And so when I sit down to write, I'm always intentional. I already. I set the intention that this album was going to be for parents and for kids, because parents have to enjoy it just as much as the kids.
Divinity Rocks
Thank you.
WNYC Studios
And when I think about 90s hip hop and I think about what age those parents are and who what they were raised listening to, I imagine that they are ready for a real hip hop album for kids. And so I just knew that these songs, these beats, these lyrics, this vibe was gonna resonate with parents.
Alison Stewart
Kids are so open to creativity. They just are. Sometimes as parents, you get shut down a little bit. Maybe like work just gets in the way. Life gets in the way. What kind of creative headspace do you have to be in to sort of tap into that childlike imagination?
WNYC Studios
I feel like it's really intentional. It has to be intentional. I get to play music for a living, right? So I'm always in some state of play. My little nephews and nieces think that I'm a child.
Divinity Rocks
When I hang out with them.
WNYC Studios
I find this space of just joy and really resonating. And being in that joyful place lifts me up out of the dumps as an adult. Oftentimes jumping around my living room with my puppy or singing some silly song. You know, those things just help me stay in touch with within.
Alison Stewart
I'm talking to divinity Rocks. Her new album is Worldwide Play Date. It is nominated at this year's Grammy for best children's album. We're gonna hear another song. Before we do, could you introduce the two fellas who are right here? Hey.
WNYC Studios
This is Wes Mingus on the guitar and we got Granville on the drums.
Alison Stewart
And what are we gonna hear next?
Divinity Rocks
Wow.
WNYC Studios
What do you guys wanna play next? Let's play Be yourself. Now, this song was on my first Grammy nominated album. Ready, set, go.
Divinity Rocks
Let me, let me, let me, let me, let me, let me see you move. Be yourself when you do. Cause you're the only one who want to wanna one. I wanna see you having fun and be yourself. Hey. Be yourself, be yourself, Be yourself, Be yourself, Be yourself, Be yourself. Cause you can't be nobody else. No, you can't be nobody. Beep, beep, beep beep, beep beep beep beep beep. Be yourself. Cause you're the only one of you in the whole world. Yeah. Hey, that's the truth and that's so cool. No, you're a masterpiece, you're one of one. Ooh. So let your plan if you're outgoing a shot. Just be yourself? Don't ask permission and don't ask why? Why? You might be the way you are, you are made of stars. If we were all the same in the world of be boring. Be yourself, be yourself, Be yourself, be yourself. Cause you can't be nobody. Just get low to the flow Get Low Break it down to the flow get low are you low? Let me see you get low to the flow Rise up, just rise up just rise up Let me see you start your stuff just right here we go. I can't be nobody else so I'm gonna be myself I love myself I love the way I move I think I'm so, so fresh People might talk about me, might laugh at me might say something mean But I let it roll off my shoulders Cause that makes me feel so free I feel so free when I get be me Love my skin, I love my hair I love the silly dance and the faces I make good clothes that I wear say what works for me Something else may work for you and that's okay Cuz you're unique so please be yourself.
Alison Stewart
My guest is Divinity Rocks. The new album is called Worldwide Playdate. So that song be Yourself, it requires a lot of people. I mean you have to have it because you have as a musician you have to have self confidence and you have to go out and be on stage. Has there ever been a time when you struggled with just being yourself?
WNYC Studios
Oh, absolutely, absolutely. Especially when I was younger and I didn't really have a sense of who I was. Even just as an artist. Who am I as an artist? As an artist, I think when you step out and you want to, you expose yourself to the world by being creative. You're searching for that voice. What is my purpose as an artist? What is the message I want people to walk away with? And as I continue to explore that and continue to build and grow and write music, I'm starting, just starting to touch on what it is that I am here for, what my purpose is and who I really am in the world.
Alison Stewart
On your new record you have collaborators. Who's on us?
WNYC Studios
Oh my goodness. My mentor, Victor Wooten is on this record.
Alison Stewart
Are you serious?
Divinity Rocks
Yes.
WNYC Studios
I love Victor. We have Malcolm. Jamal Warner on the record Tank from Tank and the Bangers is on the record T manet the great Moo Moo Fresh is on the album. One of my favorite features is the Genesis Academy cheer squad from Atlanta, Georgia. It's my niece's cheer squad.
Divinity Rocks
We brought them into the studio and.
WNYC Studios
Brought them in to sing background vocals. Of course, the legendary Mary Brown co wrote the record with me. It's just been such a great, amazing time hanging out with all these people that I got to play with.
Alison Stewart
You mentioned Victor Wooten, first name out of your mouth. What has he meant to your career?
WNYC Studios
Oh my goodness. I don't know where I'D be without Victor. You know Victor. I went to Vic's base camp number of years ago and played my D I V I N I T Y song and he just picked me up and took me on the road with him and took a chance on this young, upand cominging bass player and it really changed my life.
Alison Stewart
One of the things that you talked about last time you were here was this one woman show you were gonna do and you did it at Crossroads. I did it. The ballad of Debbie Walker. You are Debbie Walker, AKA Divinity Rocks. Tell us a little bit about the plot of that show.
Divinity Rocks
Wow.
WNYC Studios
It's really the coming of age of the superhero.
Divinity Rocks
Divinity Rocks.
WNYC Studios
I'm still developing that show. We're talking about bringing it back. What a process. I had never done anything like that before. Took a lot of courage. It took a lot out of. But I'm ready to pour back into it. Not just yet, though, because I'm still celebrating this worldwide play date album. So maybe next year it'll be something we bring back.
Alison Stewart
Well, let's hear another song. What are we gonna hear?
Divinity Rocks
Ooh, wow. You know what?
WNYC Studios
Let's play Girl Dad. It's one of my favorite songs.
Alison Stewart
I love that song.
WNYC Studios
It's one of my favorite songs on the album. We're gonna play it a little bit differently. We're gonna break it down and play it acoustic style. You know, we don't play this song live.
Alison Stewart
Really?
Divinity Rocks
Yeah.
WNYC Studios
So this is a treat for us to play it.
Alison Stewart
I heard it on your Instagram. I was like, I love that song.
Divinity Rocks

WNYC Studios

WNYC Studios

WNYC Studios

This is for my dad and all the girl dads out there.
Divinity Rocks
Hey, yeah.
Alison Stewart
Hey. My guest is Divinity Rocks. Her name of her album is Worldwide Play Date is nominated for a Grammy this year in best children's album. One serious question I want to throw at you is on YouTube. I read how it's really hard for people to find you or you're not on YouTube. Kids. YouTube channel with kids.
WNYC Studios
Oh, wow.
Alison Stewart
Is it the algorithm? Is it that people give me a face? I don't know.
WNYC Studios
YouTube Kids. So Divy Rock's Kids is the YouTube Kids channel. And one of the things that independent artists like myself are finding is that a lot of kids watch the YouTube kids TV shows and different things like that in the app on their. On their iPads. Oftentimes when they are actually doing a search for me in YouTube kids on the app, on the iPad, they aren't finding my kids channel. And it's one of the most frustrating things that we are dealing with as independent artists who make music and make content for kids. So kids, get it together.
Alison Stewart
Is there anything that people can do about that?
WNYC Studios
I think you can intentionally stream outside of the app. You know, go to YouTube. Go to my YouTube channel and you will find a list of incredible independent music artists. That's Divvy Rock's Kids on YouTube 2025 goals.
Alison Stewart
What do you have on the list? Aside from Grammys?
Divinity Rocks
That's definitely a goal.
WNYC Studios
I think I'm gonna start working on a new album. Oh. We're gonna be doing a lot of shows this year, so I'm really excited about that. And I'm gonna pour a little bit into the one woman show.
Progressive Insurance Ad
Oh, really?
WNYC Studios
And see if we can. We can put that up.
Alison Stewart
That would be great.
WNYC Studios
