You are listening to all of it on wnyc. I'm Alison Stewart. Quinn Kristofferson is a singer, songwriter from Alaska and the winner of NPR's Tiny Desk Contest. His debut album is called Write youe Name in Pink. And after Ocean Vuong requested him as the musical guest for our January Get Lit with all of it book club event, Quinn flew all the way from Anchorage, Alaska to make it happen. Here's Ocean Vuong sharing why he wanted to ask Quinn to be our get lit musical guest.
Ocean Vuong
One of my favorite poets, Spanish poet who was murdered by fascists in 1936 in the Franco takeover. Fedrigo Garcia Lorca, has his philosophy antuende. And he was studying flamenco and he says, why are we attracted to certain artists? And it's not perfection, it's not even mastery of execution because sometimes that becomes kind of cold, right? There's something else. And he called it duende. And for him it was like this, this resonance, the spirit that takes over. And you hear it in Janis Joplin, you hear it in Etta James, you hear it in Whitney Houston. And for me, I hear it in Quinn Kristofferson. And when I heard Quinn on YouTube, I was like, where is this coming from? I want to come close to the source and I want to just share that with you all tonight. And he's such a, such a special person and a performer. And I'm so happy to see that duende bubble up.

Now let's hear some music. This is Quinn Kristofferson with a live performance of his new song in youn Ride.

Thank you. In 2019, you won npr's tiny desk concert. What changed for you after you won that concert?
Quinn Kristofferson
I thought I was an artist then. I didn't think that before. I thought I really. I just thought I had a hobby. And, yeah, I didn't go to college. And in Alaska, when you don't go to college, you go into the oil field. And that's what I did. So I was a construction worker and scaffold builder, and I played music, a very seldom amount, and I just didn't see it as something you could do. I didn't see art as a job.
Alison Stewart
You're playing new music?
Quinn Kristofferson
I am playing new music tonight.
Alison Stewart
When did you write these songs?
Quinn Kristofferson
Oh, I don't know. The last couple years, I'd say. Two years. Yes, over. Over two years.
Alison Stewart
Do you have plans for them? Do you plan to put them on an album?
Quinn Kristofferson
I'm going to make a record.
I'm going to record it in March and I'm going to put it out soon, so.
Alison Stewart
Excellent. Let's listen. Here's Quinn Kristofferson. Thanks. And Ashley Wolf.

Featuring: Quinn Christopherson, with guests Ocean Vuong and Ashley Wolf
This episode of “All Of It” focuses on Quinn Christopherson, Alaskan singer-songwriter and NPR Tiny Desk Contest winner, exploring his creative journey, the impact of recognition, and the emotional resonance in his music. The show highlights Quinn’s live performances and reflects on the concept of "duende," or artistic soulfulness, as described by poet Ocean Vuong. The episode is designed to showcase contemporary cultural voices and the transformative power of music in both personal and communal contexts.
“Why are we attracted to certain artists? … It’s not perfection, it’s not even mastery of execution … There's something else. And he called it duende. … For me, I hear it in Quinn Kristofferson.”

“I thought I was an artist then. I didn't think that before… I was a construction worker… and I played music, a very seldom amount, and I just didn't see it as something you could do. I didn't see art as a job.”

— Quinn Christopherson [05:30]
Ashley Wolf on Change:
“I don't want you to change. Summer, winter, there’s nothing in between. Fire, we coming in? Yeah. You know what that means?”
— Ashley Wolf [09:35]
Song lyric, “Fireweed”:
“Fireweed, bittersweet, purple and pink. I love that you hold on to things.”
— Quinn Christopherson [12:34]
The tone of the episode is earnest, warm, and intimate, with an emphasis on artistic vulnerability. Quinn’s responses are humble and reflective, while Alison’s inquiries are supportive and insightful. Ocean Vuong’s contribution brings a poetic, philosophical layer to the discussion of music and artistry.
This episode thoughtfully weaves together live music with conversations about creative identity, the leap from amateur to recognized artist, and the deep, intangible qualities that make music resonate. Through distinguished guest commentary, heartfelt performances, and reflective dialogue, listeners gain insight into both Quinn Christopherson’s journey and the universal, transformative power of art.
