This is all of it. I'm Alison Stewart, live from the WNYC studios in soho. Thank you for sharing part of your day with us. I'm really grateful that you're here. On today's show, we'll celebrate literature and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. We'll speak with three authors who will join us to discuss their debut works of fiction. But this hour, we'll look at the stage. We'll speak with David Wise, the creator of the the Theatrical Experience Fight Back. It invites participants to help recreate a 1989 Act up meeting. We'll talk to him in about 30 minutes. That's our plan. So let's get this started with a dynamic new show, Ken Rex. The new play, Ken Rex, has been described as a true crime podcast come to life. That's because it tells the story of a real life murder in a small, and one actor is playing all of the characters. And the audio used in the show is wild. Let's hear a bit from the beginning of the show. Ken Rex, which starts with a 911 call. Every voice you hear in this clip is the same actor, Jack Holden.

91 1. What is your emergency? Huh? Oh, my God. Hello? What is your emergency? My husband. They shot him. Okay, just slow down. Ma'. Am. Please help me. Okay, ma', am, I need you to tell me. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, man. He's dead. Okay, ma', am, I need to. Do you need an ambulance? No, he's dead. They shot him. Who's they, ma'? Am? Are they. Is the shooter still in the vicinity? They've gone. They've all run away. And where is your husband now, ma'? Am? He's in his. He's in the truck. And where is the truck, ma'? Am? In the parking lot. Which parking lot? Where are you, ma'? Am? I need to know where you are. Skidmore. I'm in Skidmore. Please help me.

Jax transforms his voice and his physicality play various members of the community of Skidmore, Missouri. Sometimes he's a lawyer, a bartender, a shop owner, a radio DJ, a student, and he's also Ken Rex McElroy, a man who is a menace and wreaks havoc on the town. You see Ken, he's not a good person. Ken is killed in the act of mob violence or vigilante justice, depending on how you see it. The show includes some ingenious staging and some awesome live music. Earlier this year, Jack Holden took home an Olivier Award for his performance. Ken Rex has come over from the UK and is now running at the Lucille Lortel Theater. I'm joined in studio now by the show's co creator and star, Jack Holden. It is really nice to meet you.
