It is Friday, October 3rd, and the guy from Succession is also a corner and it makes for one of the best horror movies you are gonna see. Welcome to Deep Cuts, our countdown here on Amy and TJ of the best horror movies that you might not know. And Robes, this was, I think I was. This one I introduced you to. I'll take credit for. I love this movie.
Simone Boyce
You absolutely introduced this one to me. I had seen it on my streaming services and I just thought, I don't know, what is that movie about? And you saw it and you said, no, you have to watch this movie. And so sat down and watched it and you did not oversell it. It was amazing. One of my favorite horror movies that was sitting there in front of me the whole time that I never actually clicked on to watch. And when I did, I did not regret it.
Robes (Rob)
Okay, here we go, folks. And this is number 29 on our list of deep cuts as we count down to our favorite horror movies that maybe you have never heard of. And even Robes, the title of this one. Won't this intrigue people? So number 29 on our list, folks.
Simone Boyce
The Autopsy of Jane doe. It's a 2016 horror mystery. It runs in that sweet spot of an hour and 26 minutes, as you'll find most of our movies do. Here's the synopsis for you. A coroner and his son conduct an autopsy on a beautiful Jane Doe murder victim and find increasingly bizarre clues.
Robes (Rob)
I almost don't want to give more than that because this movie, you'd have no idea where this thing is going. And then when you find out in the end you go, oh, holy hell, I never would have thought of that. This movie is intriguing from the jump. And you said a coroner and his son. The coroner is Brian Cox, an award winning actor who is best known at least as of late, Robes for Succession. He's the lead in that show.
Simone Boyce
You know his face immediately when you see it. And Emile Hirsch, that is, that's the model. You, you went and did a deep dive on the Jane Doe in the movie.
Robes (Rob)
So the Jane Doe. So this movie, yes, they are performing an autopsy on a Jane Doe, Literally what the title says. But really Robes, even though Brian Cox is in there, the star of the movie may be someone that you never heard of, who never says a word. The Whole movie and literally lays there the whole time. She's a model named Olwen Kelly, and she is laying on this autopsy table naked and kind of white, pale skin the entire movie, essentially. And robes, as wild as it seems, she gets so much credit for putting on a good performance.
Simone Boyce
It's true. She really is playing a dead corpse. And yet it's so good. And yes, Emile Hirsch is the son and he is also a familiar face and the acting is so good. I actually was so impressed with that because, look, I passed it over because I just thought, well, you know, what is this? Some lame autopsy? It's going to be gross body horror? It's going to be grotesque. It's going to be gross. Honestly, I was so wrong about this movie and you were so right. It got 86% on rotten tomatoes, by the way. So the critics agreed with you, and the critics consensus. I'm going to read this for you because I think you'll feel validated. The Autopsy of Jane Doe subverts the gruesome expectations triggered by its title, which is exactly why I didn't tune in to deliver a smart, suggestively creepy thriller that bolsters director Andre Overdahl's growing reputation. So I actually then looked at the director, Overdahl. He's done. I don't. Do you know any of these movies? Future Murder, Troll Hunter, Scary Stories to Tell, in the Dark Mortal, and the Last Voyage of Demeter.
Robes (Rob)
You know the last one? Yes, the Last Voyage of the Demeter. It did not get a lot of great reviews in by critics and it wasn't a big box office success, but it was the story of Dracula coming over across the sea on this particular boat. The Demeter. I love that for a lot of reasons. So when you pointed that out, I was like, oh, okay, I do like this guy. He does some stuff that I do like. But this, I guess, maybe. Is that a reason you skipped over it as well, because of the title?
Simone Boyce
Yes. So I thought when I saw the critics consensus after we watched it, I also felt validated because it says you have a certain expectation it's going to be gruesome. I'm not in the mood for an autopsy. You know, you sit down on a Friday night or a Saturday night, and when I see Autopsy, I don't necessarily want to watch. And this is coming from somebody who, when you see Exorcism, I'll watch that. But I don't want to watch an autopsy. So I think that is absolutely why I skipped over this movie, because of the title. So we're here to tell you, do not skip over this movie because of the title. And here's the deal. The budget was 4 million, the box office only 6.17. So this was a sleeper and yet highly reviewed. And we can absolutely attest to the fact that this is highly entertaining. I am, I love that this is on our list because I think this is something that a lot of people have overlooked. We know it when you look at the box office and yet when you do take the time, Your hour and 26 minutes, I really don't think you'll regret it. I can't imagine not being entertained by this.
Robes (Rob)
The acting is stellar to your point, but this one is non stop suspense. You're like, wait, what? There are all. There are a number of shocking moments, a few jump scares, but this is a mystery that builds. And every time they reveal another piece of the mystery, it becomes, I think more tense. It adds to tension in the room every time a new mystery is revealed and you, oh, the whole time like, guys, get the hell out of there. Yes, it is wonderful.
Simone Boyce
I want them to get out so badly. So, so I wrote down why it made the list for me. And it's funny, I heard you just say that. So I wrote this movie is gripping. It slowly and creepily builds and you have idea what is going on and you have no idea what is going to happen next. And you will sit there and you will try to figure it out and you will be wrong. The acting is phenomenal, the script is phenomenal. But I also love the fact that there's a dramatic storm, there's weather going on. So they're in this basement to paint the picture for you. Brian Cox, the coroner and his son have a basically, I guess they're medical examiners and they have a, basically a cremation room or some sort of a funeral home esque setup in their basement.
Robes (Rob)
Examine. And you know what? You to your point, the setting actually adds to the dread. You are literally in a. And you feel like you're in the basement where they perform autopsies, they store dead bodies, they cremate dead bodies and everything. It's dark and there's dark wood, there's.
Simone Boyce
A scary elevator and it's like dark brick. Everything's dark. Everything is. So the setting is perfect. And yes, you're not in some hot hospital clinic, medical examiner's office. No, you're in someone's like Victorian home basement, like you know, one of those old school funeral homes. It's one of those. So it just Adds to this creepy feeling of being trapped. There's a storm, like, blowing outside, like there's tornado warnings or whatever it is going on.
Robes (Rob)
And so sheriff shows up late, says, hey, we need. We got a Jane Doe. Need you to do this tonight. And it's very important. So that's the setup. They were all headed home essentially for the night. It's late, There's a storm. Sheriff comes. I need you to really tell me how this girl died.
Simone Boyce
And then the young son is trying to go out and hang out with his girlfriend, but he gets pulled back in out of duty to his father. So this. There's a. While this dramatic storm, while this dramatic weather's going on upstairs, supernatural events are happening simultaneously. And you don't know what's the storm, what's the supernatural, how this dead body has anything to do with it. It is so good. So who is this movie for? What would you say? Tj?
Robes (Rob)
I would. This is not a lot. And again, some people don't like horror because they don't like gore. There's not a lot of that. There is an autopsy going on, but it's not that gruesome throughout. You don't see killing and death necessarily throughout, but you do see parts of an autopsy and there are some, some body gore.
Simone Boyce
There is some, but it's not as much as you would expect.
Robes (Rob)
And again. So I am the guy who hates body gore in a movie, and I love this movie. So for me, that says a lot. That does. It says a lot. I think, again, this is a one like the previous one we talked about. You have to sit and you pay attention. You need to invest in this movie. You can't look away and then turn back when you think in action. You need. Because it builds so beautifully, little moments. You remember the bell is what? There's a bell involved.
Simone Boyce
You know, they put a bell on.
Robes (Rob)
The toe of a dead. Of a dead body.
Simone Boyce
That plays significantly in this movie.
Robes (Rob)
This movie is just tense and it's creepy. And this is another one, Robes. Don't you dare watch this movie alone.
Simone Boyce
I don't think you should watch this movie alone at all. So I think this is for anyone who loves a mystery, anyone who loves to be surprised, anyone who loves to try and guess what's on going. Going to happen next. And you know, you get disappointed when it's so obvious like, duh, of course that's the killer, or, duh, of course that person's gonna die. That is not this movie. This movie will keep you guessing about what is going to happen next and what is going on in this place. So I absolutely think that should pretty much sum up anybody who loves a thriller or a whodunit or a what the hell is going on here? And that is absolutely this is the movie for you. Now. Coming up after the break, we're going to tell you who this movie is not for what you should pair it with food, drink, snack, ambiance and where you can watch it. When I looked in the mirror, I expected to see weight loss from my GLP1. Not unwanted hollowing in my face, sagging skin and wrinkles, my face looking older. That was never part of my plan. Simone Boyce
Still don't like it.
Robes (Rob)
All right, I like Hit List better.
Simone Boyce
Horror Hit List.
Robes (Rob)
I like horror Hit List.
Simone Boyce
All right, so these are the horror movies we're counting down to Halloween that you might not have seen, that you might have passed over, that you might not have even heard about. And this One is number 29 on our list. It is one of our absolute favorites, the Autopsy of Jane Doe. We just told you who this movie is for. We're now going to Tell you who this movie is not for. I think if you can't stand suspense, if that drives you crazy, if you don't like looking at dead bodies or even the idea of an autopsy, or you don't like demons or dark enclosed spaces, if you can't handle a little bit of blood and guts, it isn't a slasher. We've made that very, very clear. It's not exceptionally gory.
Robes (Rob)
You make it sound like this movie's for nobody. Well, no, you don't like this.
Simone Boyce
But here's the deal. Some horror movie folks love a thriller, love a suspense, but they don't like demons. Like, that's too scary. Or they don't like claustrophobic kind of feeling. Like dark enclosed spaces. I feel like this definitely has some of those elements to it, but it's not a slasher. It's a supernatural thriller, I believe is the best way to put it. But I have friends who will watch a slasher, but they don't want to watch anything to do with the demon because that's too scary for them. So I understand that. So if you don't like supernatural, you should not watch this movie.
Robes (Rob)
But then don't you, say, have people that are the opposite as well? Right? Yes, it's whatever your preference is. But this is an absolute. A hair raising. I have goosebumps. Chill festival. And it is wonderful. But you are look, give you a heads up. You are looking at almost the entire movie, three quarters of it.
Simone Boyce
A dead body.
Robes (Rob)
A dead body. A woman laid out naked on this table. But a wonderful performance by the woman in that role, as crazy as it seems to say, she has a gap in her tooth. Even she has. Her eyes are open to her. The color of her eye, everything about her. It's weird. You're thinking, you remember.
Simone Boyce
I was just thinking if she was a friend of mine or I hung out with her, it would probably freak me out because you look at this body and it's a beautiful body, by the way. The way, a beautiful face, a beautiful body. But you look at it for so long during this movie and it's so creepy. I think it would be. I wonder how. How her acting career has gone on from there because I. I actually googled her and I was like, oh, there she is. So I don't know if this maybe even hurt her acting career because that's all I can see is her dead body in the autopsy of Jane Doe. I wonder.
Robes (Rob)
But her role is great. And again, Brian Cox is so good, so good in everything he Does. And this is another one. He should be giving credit for. Ro. This movie is. Who would I tell what we're saying, who this movie is not for, Right. Is what we're getting at. This is not for somebody who doesn't have a friend to watch movies with. This is another one that is spooky.
Simone Boyce
I wouldn't want to watch it alone.
Robes (Rob)
Noises down the hallway, door slamming, you know, banging. There's even a cat in this one that plays a significant role. This is one that just will creep you out with every noise you hear in the house after you watch it.
Simone Boyce
I would also add to that, if there's a storm, don't watch it during a storm. Because if, you know, like lights going out, weird noises, like anytime a storm is coming, that would. I mean, if you're with friends, it might be fun to watch it in that environment. Like I'm weird like that. That would actually make me want to turn this one on. But for some people, this might not be the time.
Robes (Rob)
You make a good point. This is a good group movie. Damn, I didn't think about that. And maybe that's the way we should consider some of these movies. A one on one. Sometimes I just want to sit and watch one with you. And then sometimes it's cool to have a group experience. This is a good group experience.
Simone Boyce
Agreed? Agreed.
Robes (Rob)
That's a good.
Simone Boyce
All right, so you've got your group. You don't have a storm brewing. What would you pair this movie with in terms of snacks, drinks, food, and setting? What would you say? Yes, we said a group setting. But beyond that, what would you put with this? You know what I would say? Don't do red wine and steak. I think that'd be a really tough pairing with this movie.
Robes (Rob)
I'm trying to think of eating when.
Simone Boyce
You'Re seeing a dead body.
Robes (Rob)
Okay. I am. This is, you know, this how I am. Even when we go to movies that aren't big horror movies. I don't like eating in the movie theater.
Simone Boyce
You don't?
Robes (Rob)
I don't like ordering a full meal. Yeah, I'll take the chicken quesadillas while I'm watching. No, I don't want that. Give me some popcorn, give me my drink and let's go. So it's hard for me to pair food in this one. This is a hard one to eat. I'm picturing myself with a throw blanket. Like, actually feet up on the couch. Like, you don't need to be sitting normally for this one. You need to be curled up, fetal position. If you want, but you need to be like completely up and tucked in in some way and possibly with somebody to watch this movie. I love this.
Simone Boyce
I'm gonna pick. Here's what I would drink with this movie. An espresso martini. Because I would want to stay really heightened. I would want to have some caffeine but also feel a little relaxed. But I'd want to really be into it. And I again, no steak. I could not. I don't think I can eat meat with this movie. Just when I'm looking at a dead body. I think I'd keep it to like a vegetarian light dish, like a salad. I would just keep it light. I wouldn't want anything that had to do with meat.
Robes (Rob)
This is what I would say this is a late night movie. Like this is one.
Simone Boyce
Yeah, it is.
Robes (Rob)
If it's 10 o' clock and you still kind of wired and you look at your part and like you know you want to watch. This is a late, a 10 o' clock because it will keep you up. This is one you're not going to fall asleep on if you start watching.
Simone Boyce
Especially if you have my espresso martini.
Robes (Rob)
Even at 10 o'. Clock. So that's what I would suggest.
Simone Boyce
Espresso martini, Caesar salad. That's my thing. All right, we're gonna tell you where you can watch this now. This is like, you know how you're going and trying to find where you can find the movie. Here's what I came up with right now. If you have Hulu and you have the Showtime Paramount plus package, you can absolutely watch it. And if you have Amazon prime and you have the Paramount plus package, you can watch it there too. So I have all of those.
Robes (Rob)
Wait, so it's just on Paramount Plus?
Simone Boyce
Yeah, but then you can also go on to Amazon prime or Hulu and it's all part of it. Yes, but that's just the obvious place to find it. Of course, you can always purchase it for less than five bucks on Apple TV as well. So it's readily available. Highly recommended. You are not going to regret watching this. The Autopsy of Jane Doe. It's amazing. So we're going to tease ahead now for tomorrow's this will be number 28, the next movie. We don't want to give away the title, but I will tell you this. If you like a movie about young folks like in their 20s going on vacation, right? So this is a group of probably 20 somethings going and looking for some fun during a sunny holiday in Mexico. And we told you that the other two we've just given you aren't that gruesome. Well, forget that on this one. This one is gruesome, this one is gory. And if you like that, you're gonna love number 28. And we'll get that to you in our next episode.
