Hey there folks. It is Saturday, January 24th, and we have a breaking story out of Minneapolis, a city that right now is on edge about what will happen into the night because there has been another shooting, another ice involved shooting and another American is dead. Welcome to this breaking episode of Amy and TJ in robes. Let's start with that. There is another ice involved shooting in Minneapolis. Happened this morning.
Amy Robach
Yes, it happened around 9am and by the way, temperatures were around 10 degrees below zero and yet people are out peacefully protesting as they have been for the past several weeks. But the person we know who was killed is a 37 year old white man. He is believed to be a Minneapolis resident with no prior criminal record. And that's all we have right now. But we are seeing videos and I'm saying videos, plural, because there have been now at least two significant angles of videos that covered the moments leading up to the shooting.
TJ Holmes
So yes, folks, there is another video of the shooting that people will now debate and debate and debate. But right now we are getting and we will pass along to you this story in three different versions. The version we're getting from the city, the version we're getting from the feds, and the version we'll give you from what we see with our own eyes in studying these videos, as we have for the past several minutes before we hopped on here. Let's start though, Rose, with a dhs. They were the first to put out, I guess, official statement about what the incident was. And this is their story.
Amy Robach
Yes, this is from DHS. At 9:05am Central Time as DHS law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted operation in Minneapolis against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault, an individual approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 millimeter semiautomatic handgun seen here. They have a picture of the gun in a in a seat of a car below this statement. The statement goes on to say this the officers attempted to disarm the suspect, but the armed suspect violently resisted. More details on the armed struggle are forthcoming. Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots. Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject, but was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect also had two magazines and no id. This looks like a situation where an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement. About 200 rioters arrived at the scene and began to obstruct and assault law enforcement on the scene. Crowd control measures were deployed for the safety of the public and law enforcement. The situation is evolving and more information is forthcoming.
TJ Holmes
Can you go back up to the sentence at the beginning where they said this? He approached with. What was that? Just say that line to me again.
Amy Robach
Yes, they said. Said that the office. Wait, hold on. Okay. An individual approached U.S. border Patrol officers with a 9 millimeter semi automatic handgun.
TJ Holmes
Okay, we're going to hold on to that and we're going to get back to that. That's going to be a very important point in telling this story. We did end up seeing a live press conference by the ice. The guy who was heading of ICE operations there, he did add a few more details. He said this person wanted. This sounded like an ambush. He said this person, in his opinion. And he went a little farther with that in describing. He said this was someone who appeared and had two extra magazines, he said that were full. He wanted to make sure he made that point and said this is what was on him and they think he was approaching to do maximum damage. He went a little farther with that. He went as far as also trying to justify why they were there. They named the person who was targeted. It wasn't the individual that's dead.
Amy Robach
No, no, the individual who is dead. All we know is he is a white Minneapolis resident. So he is not someone who immigrated to the United States or somebody who is wanted or targeted by police. So, no, he had nothing to do with this targeted mission they were on. But they claim he came up and approached the officers with that handgun.
TJ Holmes
So.
Amy Robach
And we heard all of this. At least I heard all of this and read all of this before I watched the video.
TJ Holmes
All right, we're going to get to that third version of events, which is the one we're seeing with our own eyes here, in a second. But Robes, this was the incredible part. The person who's dead is not the person who was the targeted person in the operation, who they say was an illegal immigrant who had what, a criminal history and they went on, yes, how they put it, illegal alien, as they, excuse me, as they like to put it. But then the city now, something the ICE guy said in his press conference was that Mayor Fry had left out the detail that the subject had a gun during his press conference. So, yes, we listened to Mayor Fry's press conference as well, including the police chief. This was, I guess this was early on when they gave this particular press conference. They didn't have a lot of details, but they were the ones that let us know they have a name. They just didn't announce it correct.
Amy Robach
And Mayor Fry in that press conference said he watched the video and in his opinion, it shows ICE agents, quote, pummeling one of our constituents and shooting him to death. And then he added, how many more residents, how many more Americans need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end? So he was definitely adding fuel to the fire.
TJ Holmes
And right now, and the, the police chief was up there after this shooting happened, they said on the south east side of the city, I believe it's south side of the city, there was an unlawful assembly, as the police chief put it. And they were pleading with folks to go home because there was an angry group of a couple to a few hundred folks. They said robes that were collecting there. And this was becoming a very explosive situation. So it was an unlawful assembly. And they were asking for mutual aid, for help from other agencies to come in and try to calm this. As of right now, I think robes, as of this recording, things have calmed down. But it was an ugly scene for a little bit.
Amy Robach
Yes, they said about, yeah, 200 folks came to that area and they actually had to. It looked like they were throwing out tear gas and at least some sort of chemical irritant to try and disperse the crowd because people were bringing in garbage. I mean, I was seeing videos of people creating, trying to create barricades. Like, it looked as if they were starting to have or prepare for some sort of street war. And look, the tensions are reaching a fever pitch. And considering what the weather. I mean, we just walked out and ran errands this morning here in New York City. It was feels like, I think zero or negative something, but they are even in colder weather than that. And so it's just kind of remarkable to think that the tensions are still building there, given the weather and the storms that are on the way.
TJ Holmes
And there is some anxiety over what could happen tonight. I mean, this was a different. I mean, look, Renee, good, there was video. I mean, nothing is going to happen that's not going to get caught on video. It appears there in Minneapolis. But. But, Robes, the story that we got from, frankly, both sides didn't match with what we got from the video. So we will let you know. And many of you hearing our voices may have seen the video already. The video hit, I think, the Internet before Homeland Security was able to even have a press conference and get their statement out. So there are two angles, I guess, rogue. We'll start there of the shooting. But there is one that has a longer video where you actually see the first interaction with the guy who ends up dead. His first interaction with ICE agents. This is what you saw as well. Please tell me if you saw something different. So this is the guy they say approached them with a 9 millimeter. So I asked what the quote was, but I guess you can get by. He approached with a 9 millimeter. Sounds like he had it out in a threatening way. He might have had it on him. But Robes, I feel pretty confident in saying this man in no way was brandishing a weapon as he approached officers.
Amy Robach
The two videos that we watched, both angles show him holding out a cell phone. It. He was taking it and recording ICE officers. And look, you can hear the harassment that's going on in the streets where they're blowing whistles and shouting. I mean, it is annoying and intense and probably incredibly frustrating for ICE agents who are trying to carry out their orders. So you can see that it's creating this really tremendous pressure. And now you've got this guy and he. It looks like he was with a woman and he is recording.
TJ Holmes
But wait, before this. Now ropes. He was with. In the beginning of the video, I saw him with no one.
Amy Robach
Yes, correct.
Bowen Yang
Okay.
Amy Robach
When he was standing in the middle.
TJ Holmes
Of the street and at that point, Robes, what would you say? At least 20ft away from ICE agents or maybe more from what was going on, which was some kind of disturbance that was happening with agents.
Amy Robach
There was some sort of issue. And so he was recording it. And then he follows them over and. And please interrupt if you think I'm saying this incorrectly. They walk over to. Towards the side of where the curb is. And, you know, the, the, the woman. I think it's a woman, is, you know, in some sort of argument with the ICE officers. And they eventually throw her, like push her on her back onto the curb. Correct. And then he gets into it with the officers at that point.
TJ Holmes
And again, as he's getting into it, what we see is a scuffle.
Amy Robach
Yes.
TJ Holmes
We don't know what any of this is about who these people are. But robes. We see pretty well what the dead guy's initial interaction was with ICE agents. And it wasn't threatening.
Amy Robach
It was not threatening, no. And it wasn't until. I'm sorry, I absolutely saw an ICE agent throw and push a woman to the ground onto her back, and she landed on her back. And that is when a physical scuffle began. Now, I absolutely. And you absolutely did not see him brandishing a weapon or threatening the officers with a weapon. They. He. They get him to the ground. And it looked like it was. I didn't count five or six to one. I mean, there were several officers on top of this.
TJ Holmes
Oh, yeah, because they were. There were several. Now we have at least three individuals involved in a scuffle. So, yes, several agents started showing up. The person who was, I guess, fighting back or resisting was this one guy.
Amy Robach
He was resisting. Absolutely.
TJ Holmes
It's an absolute pretty violent scuffle. Give them that. What happened in the midst of that? You start hearing, gun, gun, gun. Someone starts yelling, gun. And you see the ICE agent. None of them have their weapons out at the time, but there's one particular moment, and something caused a guy who was. He wasn't even scuffling necessarily. He was standing there, and something causes him to go for his holster, and he draws and he fires. Is it at least 3, 4 shots at this guy? What was it he saw? But they were definitely yelling, gun, gun, gun.
Amy Robach
And when someone started yelling, gun, gun, gun. You could see all of the officers disperse. Like, it's like they jumped back from the man who was on the ground. Except for the other officer who was kind of standing over the scuffle. He's the one who shot or fired the shots.
TJ Holmes
So stay here. We got more details from the city about this citizen. Even though they have not given us his name, they have given us details, including whether or not he was allowed to have a weapon on him. Stay here. Success starts with your drive, and American Public University is here to fuel it.

We continue here on Amy and TJ hopping on on this Saturday afternoon with this breaking story out of Minneapolis and things right now are just as hot as they have been after ICE agents were involved in another shooting and now a 37 year old US citizen according to the city is dead after a violent scuffle. That the video of it is everywhere online. It's a good chance you've seen it by now, but people are going to debate it Robes. Just like the Renee Goode situation. Our own eyes looking at something and we're interpreting it differently.
Amy Robach
Yes. I just know the way DHS described it in their statement does not match for me in my eyes what I saw. And we watched both angles and slow moed it, paused it, tried to incrementally look at it as much as we can. And it's. Here's the point. I can't see. You can't see whether or not he pulled out his gun or if maybe they just saw a gun in his holster. It's unclear. You cannot tell once he got on the ground if he pulled out a gun.
TJ Holmes
An individual approached U.S. border Patrol agents with a 9 millimeter semi automatic handgun. Okay, are we really getting into semantics here? He technically had it on a maybe so that means he approached approached with he was not. Now this is just folks this is not up for interpretation. He had a phone out. I actually saw it and grabbed you say hey, is it possible he's got a gun in his hand?
Amy Robach
No, it was a phone.
TJ Holmes
If he had had a gun out, he would have been shot because they had 30ft to do so as he was walking towards. So he did not. Yes. He was struggling and scuffling and fighting with those officers. Absolutely. Robes. What happened in a split second to change it from a physical, get him in custody to he needs. He became a violent. A deadly threat.
Amy Robach
Yes.
TJ Holmes
You can't see that on the video.
Amy Robach
I mean he resisted arrest. There's absolutely no question he did that. And he was violently struggling with the officers. But yes. What happened in that moment when they got. I mean it looked like they got spooked. And is it because he pulled out a gun or is it because they saw he had a gun? Don't know.
TJ Holmes
That's a question.
Amy Robach
Not sure how we're going to actually be able to find out.
TJ Holmes
And they put up that picture. They did. They when they made the announcement about the incident they accompanied it with a photograph and two clips just like they said of the weapon they say that he had on him. And the city officials said he was allowed to ropes. He was allowed to have it. They said he had a license to carry. Now obviously federal agent doesn't know that. Should he have let them what was. How is that going to play into this robe? This is a it look split second. You. You can't second guess what a law enforcement officer.
Amy Robach
Yes, you resist arrest but to get shot because you had a gun on you versus brandishing a gun at police Officers.
TJ Holmes
The question ends up being did that officer have a reasonable, a reasonable fear of his life? And if he did, that's a, that's a. They make sure. That's a very, very high bar for officers. Did he. I don't know. Will he be called in? What happens now? Another investigation, Another possible criminal investigation, Another fight about. I don't know.
Amy Robach
I know. And more concerning is the reaction from folks who live there, the residents who are now fed up. They were fed up three weeks ago. How are they gonna feel now? And hearing Mayor Fry doesn't necessarily quiet some of that anger. Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz said just recently that he has spoken out of the White House twice today. And he said his first request is that ICE agents leave the state. That's his first thing. And then to say that state officials are going to investigate this shooting, not the feds. He said the Minnesota justice system will have the last word on this. We shall see about that because that has certainly not been the case in the Renee Goode investigation.
TJ Holmes
You said those were his two requests to the White House.
Amy Robach
His two requests to the White House were that leave ICE and the state wants to take on the investigation.
TJ Holmes
Did he say what the response was right?
Amy Robach
No, he did not add that. Something of note too. Just about the concern about what comes next. What happens next on the streets of Minneapolis. NBA just postponed a game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors. It was supposed to take place this afternoon in Minneapolis and now they say, you know what, we're gonna punt it to Sunday.
TJ Holmes
So is it weather related or it's.
Amy Robach
No. They said the decision was made to prioritize the safety and security of the Minneapolis community. They are concerned about protests.
TJ Holmes
Oh, my God.
Amy Robach
They are concerned about violence. So they have postponed the NBA game scheduled for this afternoon and it's now going to take place tomorrow at 4:30pm Central Time.
TJ Holmes
What's the time on that announcement? Two minutes ago. Yeah. No, again, folks, this has been. We did not plan on hopping on doing any breaking news today. In fact, we had an idea of posting something else that was a little.
Hunter Woodhull
Lighter, fair for the weekend season.

Yeah, just some like, you know, some relationship fun episodes. And unfortunately we can't get away from this news.
