Hey there folks. It is Saturday, March 28, and an awful update on a missing American Airlines flight attendant who went missing during a layover in Columbia. Officials there say they have found a body and do believe it is that flight attendant with that welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ Robes. Anybody who has traveled certainly internationally, you go to your hotel, I mean, you see it all the time. These groups of flight attendants going out together, hanging. They just have a few hours and could maybe a couple nights. But I just. You immediately go to that. Yeah.
Amy Robach
When you hear the story, you know, that's so interesting. My brain went there too. I thought, oh, you know, you see these young flight attendants and yes, their route is exciting because wherever their layover is, they can go out with co workers, let off a little steam, have a little fun, take in some local culture and then you fly back the next day. And so yes, we've all seen that and looks like a really fun job. You know, as a young adult, you think that's a kind of a perfect way to see the world and you kind of are kind of living vicariously through them in those moments.
TJ Holmes
It's almost, it's an incentive even sometimes for doing this work, you get salary, you get benefits, you get to see the world, right? And so here we are in this situation, folks, where this flight attendant went missing from an American Airlines flight that arrived in Columbia on Saturday, March 21st. Went out that night, was supposed to fly back to the US back to Miami the very next day on March 22, and has been missing ever since until robes yesterday, when we're getting word from the officials in Columbia.
Amy Robach
Yes, and certainly so many folks, he's got a boyfriend back home. His family, he's out of the Dallas area. They were all waiting for word. His father even flew to Medellin to Colombia to try and help the local authorities there find his son. But this story is. It is scary, babe, because a lot of folks travel to Colombia for tourism to experience just all of that. The culture, the. The beauty. And there are popular spots, nightlife. That's where he and his co workers went out. He went out with his co workers. It wasn't as if he was meeting some person. You know, this was supposed to just be a fun night out back in time to make the flight the next morning.
TJ Holmes
And they weren't often to cut somewhere. They were in an area that's known for tourists, known for international travelers. So it's not like they went off to some side street and went to some underground thing. They were where they thought they were safe. But the flight attendant we're Talking about is 32 years old, Eric Fernando Gutierrez Molina. And again, Rose, American Airlines flight attendant based in Dallas, but was scheduled to fly back to Miami on Sunday, March 22. So all this week, the search has been going on in all this week, folks, the family, even American Airlines, everybody's been standing by for word. And we have now finally gotten word from the authorities that they found a body they believe is Molina. We're able to track him through his cell phone. So we're going to get into the incident and why this is so scary. Now, we don't have word on how he might have died. We don't have that yet. But they do have some suggestions or some suspicions here. We'll explain all of that. But that night, robes, they land Saturday, March 21, and they were going to fly out the next day. So you got one night in Columbia and they go out.
Amy Robach
You know, we know this just from work travels. It's exciting. Wherever you end up having to go for whatever store you got your co workers with you, you usually try to have a little fun in between the work. We call them like little workations. So I'm sure that's what I'm imagining, but yes, they went out to a bar with a female flight attendant and a male flight attendant. Correct. They all went out together.
TJ Holmes
Sounds safe. Three of them together. All right.
Amy Robach
And they all went.
TJ Holmes
Two guys among them, even right now.
Amy Robach
Now we understand that Molina went out with the female flight attendant with an two men. They believe they went to a second location. You know, and you hear this, the second location is always the scary part. But he actually pinged his location to some of his friends and co workers. He ended up in an Airbnb near the airport with two other men that they met at this bar. But the female flight attendant went with him. So he's not going alone. Safety in numbers, right? You figure, okay, we've got each other. We'll hang out with these two guys who seem like they were fun. We'll take the party to another location. That's where it's believed something went terribly wrong.
TJ Holmes
And they started suggesting early on in this that it's possible that they might have been drugged. And the reason part of that reason ropes two things. One has to do with what the female flight attendant is reporting to police, and it also has to do with who police believe they were with. They have video, apparently surveillance video of who they believe was hanging out with the flight attendants.
Amy Robach
Yes. We understand that the two men that they were with now were known to local authorities, that they were known to be thieves, basically, who use a. A specific type of drug that's very familiar to Colombian officials to basically impair the people who they're with. So they pose like, hey, we're fun guys. Then they drug these unsuspecting tourists, targeted victims with this drug. You can easily slip it in a drink or in food, and you basically, it's. It forces you to forget you're incapacitated. You actually have amnesia and you don't know what happened. And that's what this female flight attendant is reportedly telling authorities. She doesn't remember huge sections of the night. Somehow she made it back to the hotel. She doesn't even know how from what we gathered. Like, she's just like, I can't even fill in massive holes in my night.
TJ Holmes
So robes, that is. You hear about this stuff. I mean, quite frankly, since I was a kid, my mom has been warning me about this stuff. If you ever turn your back on your drink, you do not drink that drink again.
Amy Robach
Absolutely.
TJ Holmes
I've been taught that from a very young age. She used to teach me that robes about my milk carton. At school. I kid you not.
Amy Robach
Wow.
TJ Holmes
This is just one of those things. The scariest things ever. When you travel internationally, Robes, it's not like if you go into Medellin, it ain't going like going to London. These are different places where you have to be aware in a different way. And Colombia, in particular is known and criminals are known for doing this there. Now, robes, I haven't seen, and tell me if you have, but they had a press conference, I think Thursday, this week or Friday. Authorities did. No arrests have been made. They seem to know who these assailants are, but we haven't gotten word that anybody is being tracked down or being charged with anything just yet.
Amy Robach
Yeah, not yet, but they've made it sound like they know who these men are, that they have identified the suspects yet. You're right. We have not heard word of any kind of arrest as of yet. But certainly, you know, his father's down there. The body is being formally identified. And one would hope that that would be the next step, that these two men would be taken into custody if they know who they are and they're able to actually say, these are guys who have done something like this before.
TJ Holmes
And this is a. I mean, Molina's a young guy.
Amy Robach
You.
TJ Holmes
You said even seeing we fly a lot, right? And we are very familiar with flight attendants. Almost from a distance, you can tell how your day is going to go and what kind of personality they're going to have. We just see flight attendants a lot. And quite frankly, you looked at him and you immediately said, oh, I know that guy.
Amy Robach
You know what I did? He has this sweet, kind face. And his boyfriend has been trying to get attention for his missing partner all week long. And he's described him as just joy, pure joy. And you can see it in his face. His picture is everywhere. If you look up this story online, and yes, I know him. I know that flight attendant. That flight attendant think, oh, good, we got this. We got a fun one. We got a joyful one. He's going to be a blast while we're flying. We always look for that. We love having relationships with our flight attendants because we like to make flying an experience. And he just looked like that guy who you'd be like, yes, got him as our flight attendant. He's going to be fun. And that. That is how he was described by his boyfriend.
TJ Holmes
Imagine if he looked different, though. Ropes. We talked about this, and these are. Look, we. We cover a lot and robes. And I have been in a lot of newsrooms in which somebody goes Missing and they look like Mr. Molina and they have a name that's Molina and they are gay. You throw that into this. People can say what they like. But we've been in a lot of newsrooms where a story like this is skipped over based on what the missing person looks like. And that's just true. And if you stop for a second. American Airlines flight attendant missing in Columbia, blonde haired, blue eyed woman from Texas. Would you been more aware of this story?
Amy Robach
It would have been the top story.
TJ Holmes
Would you be more aware?
Amy Robach
Yes. This would have been a huge story this week. That is one of the first things I said when we saw the story this morning. I thought to myself, why has this story not been more prominent? For all the reasons you just said. A flight attendant on, on a layover, American Airlines goes out with co workers, suddenly is missing. If that were a white woman from Texas, it would have been the lead story everywhere. This would have been a frantic search. This would have topped all the headlines. We would have been extremely aware of this story. We would have been following it day in and day out. And that. That's sad. It is sad because if you think about it, there's no way that isn't true. Of course that's true.
TJ Holmes
I'll be honest with you. This didn't get on my radio. I wasn't aware until a couple days ago. He's been missing last weekend. I didn't. It didn't. And we pay attention to news quite a bit. If you go through and look at the headlines and look at for stories right now, it's not a lot compared to a bunch of other stories that are making headlines right now. Look, I know it's not a lot of room for news and you had to make these editorial decisions, but a decision was made that this didn't rise to the level for a lot of newsrooms.
Amy Robach
Yes, Nancy Guthrie is still top of mind on pretty much every online news organization. You'll see her, Savannah Guthrie, Nancy Guthrie everywhere. I never saw Gutierrez Molina. I never saw that last name. You have to actually search his name up for the story to come up. And yes, you can see it's been covered, but it's not headlined. It's not on the front page of anyone's news website. And that is a shame because it would have been if he looked different.
TJ Holmes
We know it would have been. We actually know it would. This story has all hundred percent. It has every element of a news story that a lot of newsrooms look for. Even adding to it the historic, the lore of A place like Medellin. Missing in Medellin, an American, a flight attendant went out one night and she's gone. That would be what. And so to Molina's family, and we see what happens here, but they haven't officially. I guess they essentially have, but haven't. But they're waiting for some results from the medical folks down there in Colombia. But the family has been, has been notified. And yes, they are saying this is Molina and we've lost an American citizen in Medellin and we don't know why.
Amy Robach
Yeah. And it is an incredibly tragic and sad story, but it's also a cautionary tale. That's the other element of the story that again, if it had been a victim of someone who looked different than Gutierrez Molina, then we would have actually used this as a cautionary tale, not just, not just for Colombia, but for anyone traveling in certain areas known to have high levels of crime. You, this is something to be aware of. You can't trust folks and go to a second location with them, period.
TJ Holmes
That is what we want to hit on now because folks, what has happened apparently now in this case in Colombia has been happening for a while. And it's something that the US Government has been warning citizens about if they're going to go specifically to Colombia. We'll explain Devil's Breath. That is what is believed to have been the drug possibly used on this flight attendant. We'll explain what Devil's Breath is and why the US Government has been warning about it for years.

All right, we continue here on Amy and TJ robes. I have. I have never heard of a drug called Devil's Breath, but some people might know its official name. I'm not. Please help me. How do you mean?
Amy Robach
And when I saw that, because we started looking up Devil's Breath, I had never heard of it either before, which is actually an important part of this story for anyone who might be traveling to Colombia for whatever reason. But you might know scopolamine if you have any kind of motion sickness. When I had to travel the Drake Passage and go to Antarctica, which is known for rough waters and massive seasickness, I had a scopalamine patch on the back of my neck. It's very common for folks who go on cruise ships. It's a very, very low level of scopolamine. And frankly, after a couple days of having the patch on, I had to take it off because I was confused and a little disorient. Couldn't do my job on, on television with the patch on, I had to take it off and deal with the nausea. But at a just a little bit of a higher dose, it, yes, it causes confusion, memory loss, impaired judgment, and at some points even unconsciousness. And it is known to be used by folks who are targeting tourists and victims to basically incapacitate them, to steal from them.
TJ Holmes
This stuff is scary. This stuff is to think that someone outside of a doctor might give you this, somebody who doesn't actually know what they're Doing and have a degree. This stuff is scary and dangerous and they are giving it to unsuspecting tourists to incapacitate them and rob them. For years this has been up on the US Embassy in Columbia site. The headline security alert for US Citizens US Embassy in Bogota. Increase in crimes involving use of sedatives. That's the headline. They have put this alert out and it's been there for years. This is what it says about devil's breath. The U.S. embassy informs U.S. citizens that in the last year the embassy has seen an increase in reports of incidents involving the use of sedatives to drug and rob individuals. Foreigners are routinely targeted through online dating applications or in bars and nightclubs. The embassy regularly receives reports of these types of incidents occurring in major cities including Medellin, Cartagena and Bogota. Most or some of these incidents have resulted in victims dying or needing serious medical assistance as a result of an overdose from the drugs used to incapacitate the victim.
Amy Robach
That's. So it said that just one gram of this stuff could kill you. It's so potent at a very small amount and apparently it's odorless, it's tasteless, it can be easily and quickly put in your drink. It can. They say you can even blow it in someone's face. Isn't that crazy?
TJ Holmes
And the next one. So they say that they warned of that robes. But then also in the same warning wrote, they get specific about this stuff. That's a part of this story now with this flight attendant.
Amy Robach
Yeah, this is. Historically, in Colombia, a drug called scopolamine has been used to carry out these crimes, also known as burundanga. Burundanga in Colombia, it's an odorless, tasteless, memory blocking substance used to incapacitate and rob unwary victims. If ingested, tested or exposed, scopolamine can render a victim unconscious up to 24 hours or more. In large doses, it can cause respiratory failure and death. It is most often administered in liquid spray or powder forms in food and beverages. That is so frightening.
TJ Holmes
It's frightening. Robes. This, this notice went out three years ago. And robes, we're reading line for line. What they're describing happened to this flight attendant.
Amy Robach
And now when you see that and hear what happened to him and you think about that young woman, the, the woman who was with him, the female co worker, the fact that she was able to make it back home or back to the layover hotel is fairly remarkable. It would seem like she would have been more of a, a target in the sense that she would have been like smaller and maybe the same dose would have been fatal to her. It's. I don't. We don't know how she got back and he didn't. But. But wow, that is scary. And this should be a headline grabbing story. This should be important not just for the value of Molina's life, but just also for the information that people need to hear.
TJ Holmes
This is a very important for anybody that travels or anybody. You go anywhere, go out to a nightclub. This is what we tell our girls. This is what we have. We always. You always, when your girls travel, you feel better when they're traveling with a guy. But then at the same time, you never know what's going to. Two guys and a woman went out and one guy's dead. Dead, right. They went out as a group and one of them is dead. Another one's lucky to make it back. Like that's. This is just terrifying. We have to keep this in mind when we travel. There are a lot of people are not there. They are. It's a business for people that you show up. American tourists are coming. It's the season. We're about to get paid because we're about to go prey on them. That is really what happens in a lot of places. You have to be careful. This is terrifying. Ruin.
Amy Robach
It is so scary. And everyone should pay attention to this story. You mentioned our girls, our kids. I think about this all the time and think about these two folks. They're just out having fun, letting off scene. But the problem is once you start drinking, your guard is down and everything's fun and everyone looks friendly and you just aren't thinking about a crime happening because you're having a good time. And so the alcohol adds to your poor decision making. They probably wouldn't have gone away with two strangers had they not been drinking and having fun and feeling loose and saying why not yolo that that's what ends up happening when you go out looking for a. A good time. And it's just so sad that it ended the way it did.
TJ Holmes
Well, folks, we'll keep an eye on this one as well and continue to get those updates. We do expect several updates on this story, but the word the news is this morning that in fact, yes, a missing flight attendant, American Airlines flight attendant, been missing in Columbia for a week. They believe they have found his body. With that, folks, we always appreciate you spending some time with us. I'm TJ Holmes. On behalf of my dear Amy Robach. We'll talk to y' all soon.

This is Chelsea Handler from Dear Chelsea after the Big Game. Like most people, I kept thinking about the commercials and there was one that stayed with me. It was from the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate, and it wasn't loud or flashy. It showed a Jewish kid being targeted at school and another student who chose not to ignore it. As someone who was Jewish, that moment felt very real to me. Not dramatic, just familiar. And what struck me was how clearly it showed that hate doesn't always announce itself, but the impact is still huge. If you saw the Blue Square spot during the Big Game, it's worth thinking about. And if you want to show support, sharing the Blue Square is one small way to do that that Get a full body reset anywhere you go with Dr. Teal's magnesium spray. Amy Robach & T.J. Holmes Present
Episode: "Devil's Breath" Suspected In Death of Missing American Flight Attendant in Colombia
Date: March 28, 2026
Hosts: Amy Robach & T.J. Holmes
This episode centers on the tragic case of 32-year-old American Airlines flight attendant Eric Fernando Gutierrez Molina, whose body was found in Colombia after being missing for a week following a layover in Medellin. The hosts recount the events leading up to Molina's disappearance, the wider issue of "Devil's Breath" (scopolamine) attacks targeting tourists in Colombia, and the underreporting of this case in U.S. media due to implicit biases. The episode is both a true crime update and a cautionary tale for international travelers.
On the cautionary element:
“It is an incredibly tragic and sad story, but it’s also a cautionary tale…if it had been a victim of someone who looked different than Gutierrez Molina, then we would have actually used this as a cautionary tale, not just for Colombia, but for anyone traveling in certain areas known to have high levels of crime.”—Amy Robach (14:42)
On media bias:
“If you stop for a second. American Airlines flight attendant missing in Columbia, blonde haired, blue eyed woman from Texas. Would you been more aware of this story?” — TJ Holmes (12:04)
“It would have been the top story.” — Amy Robach (12:26)
On scopolamine’s effects:
“Just one gram of this stuff could kill you. It’s so potent at a very small amount and apparently it’s odorless, it’s tasteless, it can be easily and quickly put in your drink. They say you can even blow it in someone’s face. Isn’t that crazy?” — Amy Robach (22:54)
On the randomness of safety:
“Two guys and a woman went out and one guy’s dead. Dead, right. They went out as a group and one of them is dead. Another one’s lucky to make it back…this is just terrifying.” — TJ Holmes (24:47)
On personal impact:
"His boyfriend has been trying to get attention for his missing partner all week long. And he's described him as just joy, pure joy. And you can see it in his face. His picture is everywhere." — Amy Robach (11:07)
The episode is conversational, empathic, and at times outraged at the social dynamics beneath the tragedy. Both Amy and TJ blend journalistic insight with real-world advice, advocating for heightened awareness when traveling, and highlighting the need for more equitable media attention for victims of crime, regardless of their background.
For listeners:
This episode offers both a close look at a disturbing incident impacting an American abroad and an urgent reminder of travel risks, all the while critiquing the media’s selective storytelling. Listeners walk away with practical advice, a broader awareness of scopolamine-related crimes, and a call to recognize the biases in the stories we are told—and those we’re not.
