Hey there folks. It is Thursday, May 14, and a shooting in Tennessee is getting a lot of attention right now. Not just because of the victim who was shot, but really more so because of who did the shooting. That person, by all accounts, is a flaming racist. And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and tj. You ever heard the name Chud the Builder before?
Amy Robach
I had never heard of this person before, but my goodness, once you do a quick Google search, I wish I never had.
T.J. Holmes
I am with you on that. It's important for us to I guess note here, Rose, that this stuff is out there. As much as we watch news, as much as we're engaged in a lot of stuff and online, not as much. I did not know there was a person like this out there walking around. So we started here and I said, flaming racist. That's by his own account. This is not me Robes making a judgment about him and what he does. I cannot believe the videos I see of what he does.
Amy Robach
I watched a few of them and I really actually felt physically ill because this is a man who goes around for his own fame and his own ego and his own desire for followings and likes and even dislikes. But he goes around and he purposefully engages in horrific behavior aimed at and towards black people who are just doing their thing and innocent bystanders starts throwing out racial slurs. I'm talking the N word. Making despicable comparisons and doing anything he can to get them to react.
T.J. Holmes
They often do. But quite frankly it's pretty impressive. In some of the videos I saw that a lot of folks kept together as well as they did. We considered playing some audio here, but it's actually too vile. But this is a guy, we are not mincing words or taking any liberties here. He films, he records, sometimes live streams. But he walks up to and I often see it's young black men he seems to have a good time walking up to because he might think they're the ones that are going to be quickest to go off. But he walks. He will absolutely look at them and repeatedly call them the N word. Repeatedly. And if they ever get upset, they use this term rope. I hadn't heard about it before. Chimp out. Watch them come over here and chimp out. They're gonna chimp out. There's a whole Twitter account X account that's called chimp out that he's Associated with. And all they do is talk about black people with the n word and calling folks chimps. This is out there and I didn't know this was out there. Robes. And it's disturbing. But he has a following and he has supporters and he has people who defend him and even now are defending him. I'm not saying overwhelmingly but. But I just had no idea this guy existed.
Amy Robach
No, it actually breaks your heart. It hurts your heart. It makes you physically ill to see it. And look, he's 28 years old. His name is Dalton etherley. Just so you know, he does go by, yes, chud the builder. But he now, thank God is facing some pretty damn serious charges. He's had a few excursions in fact as early as or as recently as this weekend. He's a rabble rouser. He. But he incites and he has been inciting violence and, and, and we all, if you looked at these videos and we weren't aware of them, obviously this was just a matter of time before someone got shot, someone got really hurt.
T.J. Holmes
And in this case he is the one accused of doing the shooting. So this guy, Dalton eitherly is etherly is how it's spelled. E a T H E R L y. Again, just for folks out there, Dalton etherly. But chud the builder is what he's known as online. He has now been arrested. He has been charged with attempted murder. This shooting was outside a courthouse in Tennessee and Clarksville. Clarksville is where it was a tiny town but this guy was in the middle, apparently robes as we described this incident of doing what he always does and he goes up to. Excuse me, I shouldn't say that he has his own version of events. But anyway, there was some altercation that took place outside of the courthouse.
Amy Robach
Yes, he was there for some other issue he had some other legal issue he had. And so he was supposed to be appearing in court but outside of the courthouse. Yes. It looks as though he started doing what he typically does. There was an altercation and ultimately he pulled out his weapon and he had threatened to do this just a week ago. And that's what's so scary. He basically said if you come up to me, if you attack me, no matter what I say to you verbally, I will shoot you. I actually have his exact threat on X from May 7. He said, I will defend my life with lethal force. Do not approach me with intent to threaten bodily harm. And then he said series finale is dead chimp on the pavement and you monkeys rioting when I walk free.
T.J. Holmes
Stay tuned Again, folks, you hear that and you go, wait a minute. What? This is how he talks. Every sentence is this. It's not just a one off over here. Or he said this a week ago. Or he has some vile comments in his past. His entire social media presence is all about chimp, this N word that all throughout is all it's about. So I didn't know Robes had no idea that this guy was out there. Other people are aware of him. He threatens, he instigates. He is trying to get black people to do something on camera that he can then post and go see. Told you. And all he's doing. Robes, there's another. There's video out there where he's threatened to shoot somebody. He started a confrontation with somebody in a car. You see that one with. In the orange Dodge Charger, yelling and screaming. He said, I pulled my gun and shooting. Threatened to shoot somebody. He just. I just can't imagine being on the street now. I can imagine. I've been around this. I'm from the South. It's a little different. Fine, but just someone coming up to you, camera rolling, just calling you the N word, repeatedly calling you stupid, repeatedly calling you a chimp, repeatedly trying to get you to do something.
Amy Robach
It's so disgusting. It's so disgusting that this person is even walking the face of the earth. That he has the following that he has. And my hope is that this time, thank God. By the way, the man he shot is reportedly in stable condition, but he was airlifted from the scene to just be fair about what happened there outside that courthouse in Tennessee. But perhaps this time he will be put away and his phone will be taking away, taken away from him. And he will no longer be able to livestream this hate, this horrific hate that I can't believe hasn't erupted into violence beforehand. And to your point about how I saw black people reacting to him, I was so impressed, so impressed with the restraint. He even had the audacity in one of these videos to go up to a black police officer. Did you see that? Outside of a nightclub or a bar. And. And a young man who obviously had probably they. This was a bar. You could hear the nighttime nightclubbing noises behind. People were having a good time. People probably had been drinking. And I watched these two men just not react to him, ignore him. And he kept coming back, trying to what they call it, rage, bait them. And they didn't take the bait. And I was so impressed, but it was so sickening and sad that they were put in that position. And that this man is profiting off of this despicable behavior.
T.J. Holmes
He has been suspended a time or two from some accounts, I think his ex account at one point. But he is continuing to find platforms and places that allow him to put this out. We should mention this. He does robes. I call. I, I don't, I don't think it's. Obviously it's not sincere, but he has a reason for this. He claims he is a, A defender of the first amendment right.
Amy Robach
That white people and everybody should be able to say the N word because this is America. I mean, that's basically what he's saying. And he's annoyed that somehow he can't say the N word. So he's kind of made a point to just say it whenever, however, and to whomever he wants.
T.J. Holmes
Don't know what the point of that is. Obviously don't find that to be sincere. It's. It's not a matter of free speech. Just walk up to a black person you don't know and start calling the N word. That's not a matter of free speech necessarily. You are inciting, you are trying, you are actually begging for a violent response.
Amy Robach
Oh, he wants that for his live stream.
T.J. Holmes
Wants it. And so, yeah, that's what he claims. We at least want to say that. Now, there were two shooting victims, but apparently only one shooter robed because Mr. Chud here apparently. And there is audio of this, he recorded it between him himself and I guess a paramedic or a police officer about it. And he appears to have a wound. Himself.
Amy Robach
Yeah, because he accidentally shot himself, which, I'm sorry, I have to chuckle here a little bit because, wow, ain't that a little. Just a touch, just a tad of karma going on right there. And look, we don't have confirmation on the identity of the man who he shot, but the Washington Post did put out there that according to a witness, the man was black that they saw being airlifted into. And that would make a lot of sense. But officially, authorities have not confirmed the identity of the man who he shot, only to say he was in stable condition. But again, Washington Post and other outlets report that witnesses there said, yeah, the
T.J. Holmes
guy was black, as we say, robes, that reads.
Amy Robach
Yeah, exactly.
T.J. Holmes
But he some kind of way accidentally shot himself in the middle.
Amy Robach
Right. He shot his arm. I mean, certainly not life threatening.
T.J. Holmes
Yeah, and it was grazed or they were trying to figure it out. But he did give a version of events as well. And he claims that he was just minding his own business and there were some black guys Group of them pointing at him.
Amy Robach
I wonder why.
T.J. Holmes
And he took issue with that. So he said, he went over and said, what the hell are you doing? Start saying some stuff to them. And see, he told the cops in the interview part, he said, yeah, I asked, you know. No, no. He said, the black guy said to him, he said, if you say chimp out over here, I'm a smack. I'm a smack you or something. And he said the guy hit him and then he tried to walk away and the guy kept pummeling him. That's his version. So he is going to claim already self defense, hair ropes, self defense, a
Amy Robach
fist versus a gun. And I think he's going to have a very hard time with the tweet he put out literally days earlier threatening to kill someone and to get away with it.
T.J. Holmes
I don't know, you know, why. This is Clarksville, Tennessee. I'm sorry. There are going to be a certain way, we going way down the road of a trial. But to your point and to challenge that point is a matter of who's going to be in that jury and who is going to be able to relate to him possibly and relate to being fearful of their life if there are three black guys around them.
Amy Robach
My goodness.
T.J. Holmes
So. So he is already set up and thinking along the lines of now trying to be some kind of martyr. I can say what I want to say. You can't attack me for it. And I can defend myself with violent and certainly deadly force.
Geico Ad Voice
Yes, possibly.
Amy Robach
I just. Look, obviously anyone who goes through his ex account or any of his other social media accounts is going to see exactly what this guy is all about, exactly the kind of violence he was hoping for and exactly the situation in which he wanted to be able to shoot a black man. That is clear as day in all of his accounts. And then he ended up doing it and he already predicted that he'd get away with it. So let's say see what happens. We will follow this case. But by the way, he has a bit of legal trouble. He was there dealing with some civil issue, some financial issue. But he was arrested just a few days before in Nashville.
T.J. Holmes
Yeah. For some stupid stuff. I mean, he was arrested for skipping out on a $370bill at a, at a restaurant in the area because he said, you know what, I happened, Rhodes. I didn't plan on that. It was right here in front of me where I missed it because I have his. His ex account up. But he was going back and forth with somebody trying to have a conversation about that and he flat. Here it is, somebody calling him out or challenging him on what happened at the restaurant. Folks, this is verbatim. Lmao. Never said N word at the restaurant once. Lie some more chimps. It's a short response, but he uses the N word and chimps in it, right? That's how he talks all the time.
Amy Robach
Oh, in all his videos he says the N word as much as he possibly can just to upset everyone. But yeah, he was accused by this Nashville steakhouse for becoming unruly and he wouldn't stop live streaming. And so they came up to him during the meal and said, hey, other patrons are upset and uncomfortable that you're live streaming right now in this restaurant. We want you to turn it off. He refused to turn off his live stream, became unruly, and then refused to pay for his meal and then he was kicked out of the restaurant. But I love it. They pursued charges against him and he's now facing those criminal charges.
T.J. Holmes
However, we are just getting going on this this morning. Stay here. A little more about the man who calls himself Chud the Builder.

T.J. Holmes
All right folks, we continue here on this Thursday morning where the Robes and I we have to admit, just learning about some guy named Chud the builder who has spent his time, his energy, his efforts and building a social media following based on walking around saying the most racially insensitive, derogatory, incendiary things you have ever heard and saying them to the face of black folks. Literally going up to them on the street. It seems like Rose people there in Clarksville. I'm not what is his home base?
Amy Robach
Do you know well, he was in Nashville. I think it was Tennessee. That's from what I understand. But that's where he lives.
T.J. Holmes
There was some commentary. People there, Rope, seem to be really familiar with him and his antics.
Amy Robach
Yeah, he walks on the streets with his phone up, live streaming. And yes, people have encountered him. I mean, he has so many videos. I'm not even sure when he started this, but obviously he realized pretty quickly that he was going to get a lot of attention doing what he's doing. And he seems like he has a team of men around him in some of these videos. So it's concerning just the production quality that seems to be going. But he. I think the worst part is all these horrors, horrible things he's saying. He's laughing while he's saying them. It's just despicable. But he has 224,000 followers on X. That's not nothing.
T.J. Holmes
And they have suspended him a couple of times, but he's found this other one, this other website, some other place that allows him to stream. I'd never heard of it either this morning, but we're learning a lot.
Amy Robach
Yeah, a lot of people can find ways. And look, he's actually got this, his Give Send Go account. Now he's raising money for his legal defense, and people, not surprisingly, are contributing to it. That's also very disgusting. Just to think that this many people are supporting him and publicly and financially, given all they see, what is the point of what he's doing? What is his purpose? Like, honestly, his purpose is not First Amendment rights.
T.J. Holmes
He said that's his claim. Yes. I've always been fascinated by white people who want to fight so hard to say the N word. Like want to fight for my right to say the N word. Okay, fine. My next question is, why are you so desperate to say something so vile? Why do you want. Are you that upset that black folks can do one thing you can't do?
Amy Robach
It must be that one.
T.J. Holmes
I. I can't give us one word, white folks that y' all can't touch. Just please.
Amy Robach
It makes no sense to me why he would possibly make that his issue and make that his purpose.
T.J. Holmes
Because you can't make another argument for what he's doing.
Amy Robach
And you know what's just so sad? You see this chud the builder, and on his ex account, you know, you have your. Your byline or basically what you want to say, your mantra is, or who you are. His says free speech, Patriot Christ is king, America first. That is just, to me, mind blowing.
T.J. Holmes
Are we doing this? Can you really Christ? This is a Jesus thing. Is this what Jesus does? I mean it just. Is it?
Amy Robach
How could you possibly say that? I don't know how any Christian who knows the Bible, who knows what Christ stood for, how could you possibly have Christ is king in your bio and do what he does?
T.J. Holmes
I'm not sure who out there possibly listening or who would have that question posed to them, would have a legitimate answer to it. And folks, we are putting this on your radar because I guess it should be Robes. I didn't know this was out there. I didn't know. I mean, I know there are racists out there. We're from the South. We've seen, been there, done that. But I did not know there was somebody out there. And many people that I know and respect. I'm seeing some of their comments this morning. They were fully aware of who this guy was and whatnot. I did not know. To know this is out there, to know this is happening, to know I've gone through my life and every day not even realizing that somebody out there is doing this. What the hell are we doing? And folks, you don't have to go out and put a comment online. You don't have to combat it. You don't have to just do better. My God, please, we've got to be better than this.
Amy Robach
Learn from him. Learn what not to do. And I'm seeing he is from Clarksville, Tennessee, that is what he said. And I actually kind of breathed a sigh of relief. I saw underneath his. His account not followed by anyone you're following. I mean he. That's one of those things where if you go on there and you see someone you know following him, that might be a red flag.
T.J. Holmes
I'm desperate to understand these people. Why I. I'm desperate.
Amy Robach
Well, that's very kind of you to
T.J. Holmes
understand what it is that makes people behave this way. But folks, if you get a chance, I mean, keep an eye on it today. We'll see what happens in Tennessee, see what happens with these charges, but couldn' real update about the victim. Robes hasn't been officially identified, but can't. Not a lot of information. I don't. I haven't seen that the injuries are life threatening anywhere.
Amy Robach
But no, I saw that he was in stable condition. But I'm wondering if they're protecting his identity because he wants to be protected. If there's concern for his safety in any way. Like I don't know if that's the case, but it is unusual for them not to have released at this point. Because this happened, I believe, yesterday morning. Wednes yes, so there would be enough time for police to release those details. So it's interesting that we don't have that yet, only that he was in stable condition. But this is just something that we will now follow. Now that it is on our radar, we will obviously follow this case and what happens with this despicable chud the builder and with that. Everyone, thank you for listening to us. As always, I'm Amy Robach alongside T.J. holmes. We will talk to you soon.

Podcast: Amy Robach & T.J. Holmes Present (iHeartPodcasts)
Air Date: May 14, 2026
Hosts: Amy Robach & T.J. Holmes
This episode centers on the arrest of Dalton Etherly, known online as "Chud the Builder," who gained notoriety for filming himself verbally harassing Black people with racial slurs, notably the N-word, to provoke viral reactions. Etherly was charged with attempted murder following a shooting outside a Tennessee courthouse. Amy and T.J. explore his online persona, disturbing tactics, the incident itself, and the unsettling social implications of his following and actions.
T.J. Holmes introduces the story, emphasizing the disturbing rise of a social media figure known for aggressively baiting Black people with racist language for internet attention.
Amy Robach admits she'd never heard of him before, and wishes she hadn't after seeing his content.
Etherly was at Clarksville, TN courthouse for a prior legal matter.
A confrontation outside led to him shooting a Black man (victim’s identity unconfirmed, but multiple witnesses and outlets report the victim was Black).
Etherly reportedly posted, the week prior, a thinly veiled threat referencing using lethal force and taunting about a “dead chimp on the pavement.”
He claims self-defense: alleges he was being harassed, provoked, and attacked, and thus fired his weapon.
Etherly apparently shot himself during the incident as well.
On the impact of Etherly's content:
On the attempted murder and Etherly’s own shooting:
On the troubling societal response:
Amy and T.J.'s tone vacillates between shock, disgust, and somber reflection. They are candid in their horror at both Etherly’s actions and the existence of his audience and support system. Ultimately, the episode is a call to vigilance, accountability, and collective responsibility against the normalization and monetization of hate in the digital age.
For Future Updates:
The hosts indicate they will continue to follow legal developments and public response to Etherly’s case.
