It is Tuesday, February 17th, and still authorities have not named a suspect in the Guthrie disappearance. But they are coming out and telling us who they are not officially looking at as suspects. With that, welcome to this episode of Amy and tj. Big deal you said to me. I said what's the bigger headline? You said this is a big deal. They've cleared the family.
Amy Robach
Yes, we had a couple headlines that we woke up to, but this is huge. Look, initially, and I think just about everybody, including especially law enforcement, when something like this Happens you look first and foremost to the last people who. Who saw someone alive. And so of course that would have fallen directly on Savannah Guthrie's sister and brother in law because they were the last people to see her alive.
T.J. Holmes
And dropped what, what of them? Dropped her off at home.
Amy Robach
Yes, the brother in law, Thomas O, I believe is his name, dropped off. Nancy Guthrie. He says, I saw her go into the home, I saw the garage door close. I made sure she got in safely. So of course that is the obvious first people that you would have to investigate and then hopefully eliminate. But reporting came out pretty quickly and Ashley Banfield was the one who came out and said it. They were looking at the brother in law and made him into a prime suspect. That was a big headline as well. So to have the sheriff come out and say all Guthrie family, including their spouses have been cleared and our innocent, that's a huge deal.
T.J. Holmes
And that was one of a number of headlines. A few others we'll get into having to do with DNA. The number of leads has ballooned. And also another possible note that TMZ has received and they are now publicly negotiating with this so called rat. We'll get into that in a moment. But first, that is the headline in the. In his statement robes, the sheriff made pretty clear his motivation in doing so. Look, this is in the third week of this investigation for someone to come out. They're putting the investigation in themselves on the line to come out and definitively say that no one in this family. They're not even leaving open the possibility, they're saying no, no one in the family. And the sheriff with his statement made clear he's sending a message to the media and anybody else spreading any rumors about the family.
Amy Robach
That's correct. This was the sheriff's statement on X. To be clear, the Guthrie family, to include all siblings and spouses has been cleared as possible susp. In this case. The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case. To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel. The Guthrie family are victims, plain and simple. Please, I'm begging you, the media to honor your profession and report with some sense of compassion and professionalism.
T.J. Holmes
You know what? Good for you. Everybody's screaming at him, telling him how to do his job. Well, we've got some failings on our end as well. I have no problem with that statement. He is right. Everybody needs to be living by that covering this story and a lot haven't been.
Amy Robach
Exactly.
T.J. Holmes
That's now in all he's done in this investigation and criticism. People want to give him that. That was a nice touch.
Amy Robach
I agree completely. And I've just been this entire time so many. I know everyone listening to this has been imagining being in the Guthrie family position. It's hard enough to not know where your mother is, to fear the worst. To have this be a public spectacle. And now to hear and to read and know that of course they were aware that some members of the media were pointing the finger directly back at them. That is excruciating.
T.J. Holmes
Now you can go. People do their thing online. Fine. On social media, theories run wild. What they call them Internet sleuths. Investigators, detectives out there trying to figure it out. And everybody has their theory about the case. Fine. But there are plenty folks who are officially rogues going on networks and have police backgrounds and legit voices. Excuse me, I shouldn't say legit. But you know what I'm talking about. In. In more mainstream environments who are going Robes and also putting out some wild theories and speculation because we don't have anything official. That stuff is not. It's not just a matter of helpful for the investigation. To his line here at the. In a sense of compassion. A sense of compassion. When you open your mouth and just spewing that you think is a family member, is that a compassionate way to cover this? When it's just a rumor or it's just putting something out and that's not compassionate. I I He's giving us maybe a lesson right now that we all need and how the story should be covered.
Amy Robach
Yeah. I think he. When he said it was cruel. I think that's a good way to put it as well. But just also, Savannah, it's. It's interesting to be a member of the media and to then feel like members of your own community, members of the profession in which you work to. To be on the other end of it is exceptionally difficult. She does get it. But it's still. It hurts in a different way in that sense.
T.J. Holmes
And so let's go now to why Robes he had to put this out. Just a reminder here. This was a really big deal. What was it at least a week plus ago. Robes, when you. When you hear obviously you just said it. You watch any true crime show, the first suspect of the person they want to talk to is the last person who saw that person alive.
Amy Robach
Of course.
Bowen Yang
Right.
T.J. Holmes
That's. And I say alive just in those cases. But in this case, the last person that saw her before she went missing, obviously they're looking at him. Anyone who has been watching this story, Robes, you had that thought in your.
Amy Robach
Own mind, of course, but you don't.
T.J. Holmes
Go on a microphone and start spewing that out, what your wild theories is and start accusing a family member. Robes, a member of the media who's been out there for decades, a reputable reporter for decades, put out a pretty definitive, I would argue, statement pointing the finger and accusing the brother in law of Savannah Guthrie of being the suspect.
Amy Robach
That's right. Ashley Banfield said on her podcast that she had a source and she said it was the highest possible source who said that Thomas O, the brother in law of Savannah Guthrie was the prime suspect. And when Ashley Banfield made that statement, a almost 40 year veteran journalist, just about every, at least tabloid picked that up and it went like wildfire. And that was the headline everywhere. There were pictures of Savannah's sister and brother in law. Journalists were chasing them. They actually had to put their hoodies over their head, which made them look even guiltier by the pictures they were getting of the two of them hiding. So that had to be horrific because that's on of trying to find your mom.
T.J. Holmes
Hey, that was, it was. And the only reason, look, we want to, we wanted to step back because we know she knows better. The reason we gave you. And I even said, look, we, we have to listen because she's been around.
Amy Robach
Exactly.
T.J. Holmes
She knows not to just throw something like this out there at the wind. So she must really, really believe her source or she must really, really have good information. Turns out she's got nothing. And Robes, I don't know what we're going to hear from her when we might hear from her. But Robes, that was an awful situation because then you had people out there with the ring cam video from the porch. They were putting up the brother in law's actual picture next to it and comparing. And look, the build is about the same. And look at the mouth. And that stuff was happening.
Amy Robach
And the sad thing is once you put that suggestion in a public way out there, we know you can't totally undo it. People will look at him unless they, you know, until I should say, or unless they catch the person responsible, there will always be people who will think he had something to do with it. Just the suggestion of something. It's almost impossible to, to undo or to erase.
T.J. Holmes
That's one of those. And the family never said, never addressed it. They kept putting out their videos, never addressed it. And again, they probably didn't want to because. Because it becomes a sideshow. But I think that's the only way they could have stopped it was come out immediately and say she is wrong. I can't believe this bullshit has happened. If they would have put out a definitive statement. But why should they have to be distracted by some bs? But Robes, that's why the story continued and continued. This is the first time that somebody said no.
Amy Robach
And it's good that it came from the sheriff because that came from an official source who said we did investigate, we did look into it and we have completely ruled them out and they are innocent, they are victims.
T.J. Holmes
So that is a major development. No, we don't have a suspect but at least through a process of elimination they know who they don't have as a suspect. So they've been eliminated. The other thing, here we go again. TMZ's got another note. This one again from the so called rat. This is the fourth one. This person who claims they know who the kidnapper or kidnappers are but they want to be paid first hundred thousand dollars. Half of it in bitcoin first up front and then the half later. Blah blah blah. Strange back and forth. This new update is bizarre in that TMZ is publicly stating that they are now negotiating or trying to publicly negotiate with this person.
Amy Robach
Yes, they're actually using their website to communicate with this person. We don't know who he is, who has information, who claims he has information. And Harvey Levin is now trying to reach out and asking this person to email them back. Like literally using his website to communicate with a potential source who has information. So he actually says we have a proposition for that person. He actually talked about an excerpt from the letter saying that this person claims I know what I saw 5 days ago south of the border and I was told to shut up. So I know who he is. And that was definitely Nancy with them.
T.J. Holmes
What the hell are. Is this person, is this a ruse or is this for real?
Amy Robach
Robes, he is saying Mexico Rose.
T.J. Holmes
Is this for real? I mean they have not come out and said whether or not or at least authorities that any note they've gotten anywhere from any to any news organization from either an alleged kidnapper or this person is credible. They have not suggested that it's not either.
Amy Robach
It's interesting you ask if he's for real because Harvey Levin actually writes this in the website. If the individual who is writing us the these emails is reading this, if you are for real send us the information regarding the whereabouts of Nancy and her kidnappers. We will immediately forward the information to the FBI. If it leads to finding Nancy and or the kidnappers you then have a public record that you are the one responsible, thus ensuring you will get the reward. The FBI is aware we are making this overture.
T.J. Holmes
They gave the okay. Do they give the okay, or they just aware? Right. Were we authorized to do it, or they just aware we were going to do.
Amy Robach
They used the word aware, didn't say, has authorized us.
T.J. Holmes
We've been in the business too long. We read every little word, little line of these statements to see what this could possibly mean. I don't know. It's just bizarre. I. Now, I find it very difficult to think this is real and that it's not real. Everything.
Amy Robach
Everything is so bizarre in this story. It doesn't make. None of it makes sense. So, yes, and TMZ is saying the reason why the writer, the author of these emails has reached out to them and is communicating with them is that he has a burglary on his record, on his rap sheet, and so he's afraid if he went to police that they would think he was involved. So he's trying to keep his anonymity while getting paid for giving this information.
T.J. Holmes
Okay.
Amy Robach
That's the explanation given in the email.
T.J. Holmes
Okay. That doesn't.
Bowen Yang
Okay.
T.J. Holmes
I don't have all the backstory there, but. Okay. If you're someone who thinks you will be. Look, you know what? I. I have a healthy fear of police as well, and I think a lot of people do. So I want to leave room for that. I still have a difficult time here believing, like, you really want to continue to hold this family hostage.
Amy Robach
And if this was something you saw five days ago.
T.J. Holmes
Yeah.
Amy Robach
How is that information even. Maybe. I mean, obviously it could lead, if it's true, could lead authorities on a better trail, but five days ago, That's a long time ago at this point.
T.J. Holmes
And this is a lot of notes, and this is a lot of thinking. And to think now you like, now I don't want the person to get the reward. You're wasting this family's time. You're risking this woman's health. And she said Nancy was with him. Sounds alive to me in that language.
Amy Robach
Yes.
T.J. Holmes
Are you kidding me? That she might have been alive five days. Five days ago, Rose. And you're sitting on this. That's. Now I'm. That's criminal now, Rose. Now it's. This is. I just have a hard time believing that someone is doing that. So maybe this is just somebody trying to get paid. To this point. I almost hope it is.
Amy Robach
Well, either way, now, whether he's using it as a way of extortion or if it's basically him him withholding information that leads to someone's death. All of that's criminal. All of it. All of the above.
T.J. Holmes
All right. Well folks, we did get a couple of other significant updates having to do with the DNA that they are looking into. And also not just the backpack, but the clothing that the suspect on that front porch was wearing. We'll explain. Stay here.

Amy Robach
Welcome back, everyone, to Amy and TJ where we have a lot of updates in the Nancy Guthrie 3 missing person case. We talked about how the sheriff's department has officially cleared the family. TMZ gets a fourth note from someone who claims he knows where Nancy Guthrie is. The sheriff's department also said, is it just in the past 24 hours, they've gotten 40 to 50,000 tips and leads. I mean, this is in total, but it's really ramped up in the last couple of days. So this is a significant amount of work that authorities and tips that authorities are sifting through. But a big headline as well was those gloves. The gloves, they, they found a lot of gloves, but there was a specific pair that was about two miles from Nancy Guthrie's home. They have now said that they believe those are or at least they very much match the gloves that the suspect was wearing in that ring. Camera on Nancy Guthrie's front porch and they did find DNA from an unknown male. That's huge. So now this could lead to something.
T.J. Holmes
And it could not. You know that interview the sheriff did over the weekend with the New York Times, he said they're exhausted because they, you get a lead, this is it, this is it, this is it. And then it turns out to not just be something you got to track down and, but it leads to absolutely nothing. Like, you think we got the guy and then at least to absolutely nothing. So hopefully this will be something even if that DNA matches the DNA in the house. That is a.
Amy Robach
That's something big deal.
T.J. Holmes
But then you have to figure out where. Who's that DNA belong to?
Amy Robach
Yes. So the FBI says that they are waiting on official confirmation and then they are going to put that DNA into their national database to see if they get a hit, which is huge. Also there's this high tech tool being used, a signal sniffer. We talked a lot about her pacemaker. The last known I guess connection it made with her app was around what was it?
T.J. Holmes
2:28 in the morning.
Amy Robach
There you go. 2:28 in the morning on February 1st. So now they're actually flying helicopters with this device. They low and slow is what they were saying to see if they can pick up any signal from her pacemaker if it's still activated at this point. So they are doing that right now.
T.J. Holmes
Are they allowed to fly over Mexican airspace? Because apparently this is where she is according to this rat.
Amy Robach
I hadn't thought about that.
T.J. Holmes
I mean it might be pointless. We're looking for a woman in a place she is not. Are we? I don't know. Nobody knows. Wow. Ropes. It's really possible we're looking in the wrong country according to how much effort is being put into looking because we have not heard that at all. I would love for somebody to ask that in a press conference. Are you putting any resources and working with the Mexican government in any way?
Amy Robach
That's a very good question that should be absolutely be asked.
T.J. Holmes
I am very curious. The clothing here now we've been talking about that backpack Ozark Trail, this backpack that the person had on, they said it sold exclusively at Walmart. But robes, this is key. Could be big if it turns out that wasn't the only thing this person was wearing from Walmart. They're saying now they believe the clothing. They're telling CBS News the authorities are that the clothing the person was wearing in that ring camera video on the front porch believe it's from Walmart as well. That can make things a little easier if you're able to pinpoint all those purchase like a clump of purchases versus just looking for a random backpack here they sold online. Did he. How did you buy it? So wow. If they can put all those together in one purchase that could be helpful as well.
Amy Robach
I can't even imagine the technology that they would have to employ to find that there's some sort of search engine in all of Walmart receipts.
T.J. Holmes
Walmart's helping with this.
Amy Robach
That's pretty remarkable. But yes, to think about them all Being purchased together, that would eliminate a lot of receipts. So that could lead them. That's, that's a, a big potential lead as well.
T.J. Holmes
Robes, we talk about, we talk about, I say that, but we watch a lot of people have. Well, true crime is very popular these days. But you watch it enough over the years and you see these cases Robes, where they didn't find some serial killer killer for years and years. He was able to continue to kill for decades in the 60s and 70s and 80s. Robes think now all the technology possible, they still can't find this person. It's one of these throwback, a weird throwback to those days where you could get away with murder for decades. Because they can't make these links, you leave DNA behind. They don't know how to. We didn't have that technology. We have it now. And still this seems impossible.
Amy Robach
That's why. Yes, this story is just beyond baffling because at this point, you're right. This day and age 2026, the tools and resources that we have available to us from an investigative standpoint are almost limitless. And yet still somehow maybe it's where she was located in a remote rural area where you don't have as much access to surveillance and door cameras and all of those types of tools that had they. We have seen being used non stop in solving crimes and mysteries. But this one, just the location it could be as simple as that.
T.J. Holmes
Was she targeted and they're sophisticated enough that they considered all these things?
Amy Robach
I don't know.
T.J. Holmes
This is just wild. Folks, we will continue to update you on this case. We're keeping a very close eye on it. We appreciate you as always going along with us and trusting us here. Amy Robach
No, and I think he has said that from the last one. He did. What was that? Two weeks ago or so. But he said, I will not hold another press conference unless there is a significant development.
T.J. Holmes
So he is now if we ever hear that there is a press conference, I guess we know we should be paying very, very close attention. So folks, we always appreciate you listening to us. On behalf of my dear Amy Robach, I'm T.J. holmes. We'll talk soon.

Episode: NEW: Entire Guthrie Family Cleared, TMZ Receives 4th Note and DNA From “Unknown Male”
Date: February 17, 2026
Hosts: Amy Robach & T.J. Holmes
Podcast: iHeartPodcasts
In this episode, Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes provide a comprehensive and emotionally charged update on the ongoing Nancy Guthrie disappearance case—one that has captured national attention. The main headline is the formal clearance of the entire Guthrie family, including siblings and spouses, as suspects. The hosts dive into the complexities around media speculation, official law enforcement statements, new leads (including a fourth note and DNA discovery), and challenges in the investigation. The tone is empathetic, critical of irresponsible reporting, and sharply focused on facts amidst ongoing uncertainty.
This episode delivers an incisive breakdown of a high-profile missing persons investigation, centering on the official exoneration of the Guthrie family and the wild trajectory of media involvement and misinformation. Amy and T.J. highlight the real human cost of public speculation, dissect new (but uncertain) evidence, and express both hope and frustration with current investigative techniques. The episode is a must-listen for those seeking a factual, compassionate, and critical narrative amid a case still shrouded in mystery.
