Amy Robach
Hey there, folks. It is Thursday, April 30, and you remember that national story, that headline making jailbreak out of New Orleans last year? Saw the video. You can see it in your mind now. Remember those 10 inmates running out of that New Orleans jail? Well, someone has now been charged in connection with that escape, and it's the sheriff. And with that welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ Robes. The sheriff didn't get with one or two or three felony counts. Not even 10, not even 20. This sheriff has now been hit with 30 characters. Charges related to being really, really crappy at her job.
TJ Holmes
Yes. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hudson is facing. Has been indicted on 30 felony counts, all related to that May 2025 jailbreak of 10 inmates. It has been documented as one of the largest and most brazen jailbreaks in. In United States history. And it took them until October before all 10 men were recaptured.
Amy Robach
What did you say? One of the most brazen, one of the most something else you say it's also one of the most hilarious. It's not. These were some pretty hardened guys, but ropes, they're writing messages. They went out through a whole, like a lot of the details. And in the video you just see it was almost comedic, like something we see on a movie. These guys just are filing out of the jail. And it was embarrassing.
TJ Holmes
Yes, it was a toilet. Jailbreak is how it's been described because basically they actually want to. So by the way, we should point this out. 13 people had already been charged in relation to this jailbreak. The sheriff and her CFO are the latest, too.
Amy Robach
Okay. But all those others were aiding, like, friends, colleagues, I think the janitor or
TJ Holmes
something, worker who turned off the water to the toilet.
Amy Robach
Do I have right, though robes that this are. These are the first people of authority.
TJ Holmes
Correct.
Amy Robach
To get hit with charges.
TJ Holmes
Correct. And they went straight to the top. The buck stops here. And look, notably, look, we should point out that Susan Hudson was about to leave office. She's, I think, slated to leave on Monday. Today is Thursday. She was arrested and indicted yesterday. She got out on bail, by the way, late last night. So imagine you're the sheriff of Orleans Parish and you are in jail. She was in jail. Had to post bond. $300,000, by the way, was her bond robe.
Amy Robach
She's getting fingerprinted and photographed by the same people that she used to be in charge of. She's. That's. That's Awful. And that's awkward. But Robe, did I hear she, she was about to be out of office on Monday?
TJ Holmes
Yes, because she was the. Get this, the election for sheriff took place three days after the last inmate was recaptured. So it was fresh on voters minds. So the tenth guy finally gets recaptured in October. Three days later the election takes place. She only gets 17% of the vote. She handily lost. No, she handily lost the election because she was the person in charge of the jail where 10 dangerous, violent, some of them even charged with murder, escaped and were out in the community from Louisiana to Texas to Georgia. That's how far the last inmate got
Amy Robach
that he was Atlanta, wasn't it?
TJ Holmes
The last guy, he got captured after a standoff, by the way, in Atlanta
Amy Robach
in October, June, July, August, September, October. So you're talking about five months of. And again, Robes, some of this, you can smile. No one was hurt at any point. No one was injured or harmed or killed, thank goodness, based on these guys getting out. But Robes, the reason now, yes, you could laugh. And the hole in the wall and the toilet and the messages they left and all that. But Robes, someone is responsible for unleashing guys who the state believes are threats to the community that rises. This is not just some oversight or the buck stops kind of a thing, Robes. This is dangerous stuff. And somebody didn't do their job.
TJ Holmes
It's. And they believe that it was the sheriff herself who did not do her job, along with her chief financial officer, by the way, she is facing 20 felony counts as well. So we can go over what these counts are because here's what the Louisiana Attorney General had to say specifically about making this arrest. And they actually took this to a grand jury. The grand jury is the group or the body that came out with these 30 counts. But here's what the Louisiana Attorney General had to say. While Sheriff Hudson did not personally open the doors of the jail for the escapees, her refusal to comply with the basic legal requirements and to take even minimal precautions in the discharge of her duties directly contributed to and enabled the escape. So yes, she is facing 14 counts of malfeasance in office, four counts of conspiracy to commit malfeasance in office. The other counts include filing or maintaining false public public records and obstruction of justice. I mean these are mass major serious felonies. This is a woman who was sheriff for the last several years. She may go to jail if found guilty of these crimes. For sure will never be able to vote again. I mean you think will never be able to carry a firearm Again, if she is convicted of these counts, this is significant and a major headline.
Amy Robach
Well there, I mean, Robes and what's her age again? I saw her picture, but I mean this is in her background and her career. And Robes, this was. Look, any jailbreak, any escape, they are going to look at the sheriff of who's in charge. Who's in charge of that jail, of course. But Robes, this was stunning and embarrassing to a level that somebody needed to be held accountable. And they. From the beginning, weren't they really trying to focus so much on the maintenance guy?
TJ Holmes
Yes.
Amy Robach
It was almost as if they were trying to put it all on that guy for a little while by just turning off some water. Now he was, he had a. What was his defense for it?
TJ Holmes
He said something about why he turned off the water, but it had nothing to do with the inmates. It just so happened that there was some mechanical issue that he was trying to just forego a problem with the water leak. So he just happened to turn it off when the inmates just happened to remove the toilet.
Amy Robach
You know what, even hearing him, it was a part of his story that I thought, okay, I'll listen the sheriff. I don't know what to say here. Robes. Now the legal thing has to do. It's all this back and forth. But Robes, they had to do something and go after somebody. This was highly embarrassed. They literally. Now they were running, but they might as well have walked. They just strolled right out in single file line out of jail. And we all saw those pictures over and over. Rose, this was highly embarrassing. Somebody had to pay for this.
TJ Holmes
I'll be honest, I agree with you. But I figured it would be a prison guard or two. Maybe, maybe the, the warden of the jail. Like I'm thinking it's going to be one of those folks who were directly in charge of basically overseeing the jail. But no, they went straight to the top to the woman who was supposed to be in charge of the whole thing. And look, they spent and they took their time because remember, this all happened. They've had many months to put this together. And the attorney general said they spent and took their time to make sure they got the right people and held them accountable. And they believe it was the sheriff herself and her chief financial officer who by the way, is also a woman. So two women now being held accountable for this massive jailbreak.
Amy Robach
Makes me think about John Dillinger. There was a famous case back in the day of a woman being in charge of the jail that he broke out of. Right. Famous. This is one of the Most famous cases ever. And there was a press conference in which this female jailer and they said, we want to transfer him. And she was like, nope, I could take care of him right here. I find jail just good as any other. There's this like a historic, I don't know why this is coming to mind, but there was this very famous case in which sure enough, she said, nope, I can take care of it. And they accused it, well, a woman can't take her. And sure enough, he broke out of jail. Okay, all right.
TJ Holmes
Well, history does repeat itself. Apparently that is the case.
Amy Robach
But you did point out that both of these are women. You've been reading a little more about this and update on the story than I have this morning. This shouldn't be a part of it. A woman can do a job just as well or just as poorly as any man, frankly. But I don't know if that is or is going to be becoming a part of this conversation because historically we have robes seeing this from at this point. You can take this from hegseth now on down. Some question about a woman and their ability to, to perform and handle these traditionally male testosterone driven roles, especially in law enforcement.
TJ Holmes
You make a good point if you think about it. Wow. I just now connected those dots. Hadn't thought about it. But yes, Pam Bond, Attorney General Pam Bondi just lost her job, has been at least temporarily replaced by Todd Blanche, a man. And then of course you have Head of Homeland Security Kristi Noem replaced with now a man. I was Mark Wayne. Correct. Mark Wayne Mullen. So yes, those are two very visible females who were in charge of law enforcement and they are now out of jobs. And look what we're having here now in New Orleans as well. Two women who had very powerful positions within law enforcement losing their jobs.
Amy Robach
Just a coincidence. Maybe it has nothing to do, but it, unfortunately it becomes a part of these conversations.
TJ Holmes
It's true. It's true. When we come back, we're going to talk about why we aren't just talking about this sheriff as a woman, why she was also a major history maker and had a lot of high hopes pinned on her and what she would be able to do for Orleans Parish. And we'll remind you just those details of that brazen prison outbreak. Outbreak instead of jailbreak.
Amy Robach
Yes, it's okay.
TJ Holmes
I said a prison outbreak as if there was some infectious disease that was going around from inmate to inmate when I teased the break. So my apologies. I meant to say different story. Jailbreak, but I already said prison, so it messed with my mind and I just went with outbreak.
Amy Robach
Yeah, CDC is getting involved in this case now.
TJ Holmes
No, no, no, no, no. But we were talking about Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hudson. She had been voted out of office. She was about to officially leave office, I believe on Monday, hand the reins over to the new sheriff in town. But this was a send off party or a send off gift. The Attorney General of Louisiana just arrested her 30 felony counts, all related to that massive, brazen prison outbreak that happened in May of last year. And look, obviously we've been talking about how she was a female, her cfo, who has also been indicted, also a female, but Susan Hudson was the first black woman to ever hold the office of sheriff in New Orleans.
Amy Robach
Oh, God, I hate that. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. Because this gives ammo to certain segments of the population to think people just get their jobs because there's some DEI case. It sucks. And this is why you hear oftentimes black folks, when there is a first, when there's a first ever when Obama got into office like, whoo, better get this right.
TJ Holmes
Don't mess up.
Amy Robach
You screw this up, we will not have another Black president for 100 years. And sure enough, they hear this kind of a thing when it's the first and then something goes wrong. This is not an indictment of her being a woman or her being black or anything else. This is her ability to do her job. And none of those things should be connected. But robes, they will be by some folks.
TJ Holmes
And that's unfortunate because you're measured by the worst in your group by just about everybody. And unfortunately, that is just the way society ends up viewing these sorts of of incidents. They put a huge blanket across everyone. But hopefully, you know, we can hope that that won't be the case. We can hope that each of these cases, and when you have headlines like these, they are taken for the specific instance that they are.
Amy Robach
And she's innocent, by the way.
TJ Holmes
Yes.
Amy Robach
Until Proven guilty.
TJ Holmes
Absolutely. Absolutely. So. And look, they actually. She has a. Another court appearance today alongside her cfo, so perhaps some more details will come out. But she has a very long and arduous legal battle ahead of her.
Amy Robach
Why the CFO?
TJ Holmes
Why the CFO that she got 20 counts, and it had to do with part of, like, the money that was misdirected and wasn't being used appropriately to make the jail, I guess, unbreakable.
Amy Robach
They're not suggesting that someone did something illegal with the funds that you're essentially saying you didn't fund this the way you should have.
Blue Square Alliance Representative
Yeah, it's one.
Amy Robach
Okay. Those are two different things.
TJ Holmes
And maintaining false public records, obstruction of justice.
Amy Robach
Okay.
TJ Holmes
Malfeasance in office. There's a lot of stuff there. There's a lot of accusations. There were a lot of financial issues. So I can get into the weeds here, but just beyond the jailbreak itself, this was hanging over her head as well, that she was paying exorbitant amounts of money for hotel rooms for members of her city staff during Mardi Gras and wasting taxpayer dollars and misusing funds. And so the CFO was involved in all of that. So it kind of was alleging that she was partying it up and. And living a lavish life, not putting funds where they were supposed to go. Didn't appropriately have the jail in this. In this setup that it should have been, by the way, this jailbreak. Because I wanted to go over the details. These guys, as we've all seen the pictures, was it too easy? They had over the. Over the toilet.
Amy Robach
They misspelled, too, right?
TJ Holmes
Yes, Yes.
Amy Robach
T o easy, I think. Lol.
TJ Holmes
And they just walked out of jail. But the other thing is this. They were noticed. No one reported them missing for hours and hours. So if the correct mode of operation, standard operating procedure, when you're checking. When you check inmates, when you recognize they're going, what's supposed to happen next? None of what was supposed to happen happened. And hours went by. These inmates had a massive lead time. And so, yes, three of the 10 inmates were apprehended within the first 24 hours, but seven of them were out for quite some time, several of them for days and days. One got as far away as Texas. The ninth inmate, Antwan Massey, was found in New Orleans in June. And then the 10th inmate, he was the most dangerous of them all. He was facing, I think, multiple homicide charges. Derrick Groves. He was found in Atlanta in October.
Amy Robach
Is that the dude that winked or smiled at the camera when he.
TJ Holmes
Okay, yes.
Amy Robach
When he was Captured. Yeah.
TJ Holmes
But he, he managed to stay at large for five months.
Amy Robach
Yeah.
TJ Holmes
And you've got basically known murderers out there. Antoine Massey was also a dangerous dude, and he was just like a mile away. And remember, he made a video. He was almost taunting detectives with his location because he was just out there living it up and eventually did get caught. But this was a problem. There were clear violations of protocol that took place for this to have happened the way it did.
Amy Robach
We don't know that 10 dudes are missing for hours. Sorry. You're terrible at your job. This is not. We don't criticize law enforcement. They have in investigations and whatnot. But I'm pretty sure that one of the basic, basic tenets of you doing your job as a jailer is to know where your inmates are.
TJ Holmes
Yeah.
Amy Robach
And if you miss 1 For five minutes, that's a problem. Ten minutes. Uh, oh, half hour. We're in trouble.
TJ Holmes
Several hours.
Amy Robach
Ten of them for several hours. We didn't even know they were gone.
TJ Holmes
With a sign literally scrawled on a wall, a toilet ripped off the wall and a massive hole leading to outside. All gone unnoticed.
Amy Robach
They literally signed.
TJ Holmes
Signed out. You're right.
Amy Robach
Still didn't notice there. Go on. The story is. Is ridiculous. But some. You were mentioning the, the, the charges against the cfo. When you started saying it, what it started sounding like is, and I'm sorry, New Orleans. Oh, typical New Orleans politics. It does sound like bureaucracy and scandal. And we've seen this. There are some cities, robes, New Orleans, Chicago.
TJ Holmes
New Orleans.
Amy Robach
You don't even have to wait.
TJ Holmes
New Jersey, the entire state, they are
Amy Robach
just known for corruption in their politics. So you started reading. I was like, oh, okay, I get you now.
TJ Holmes
I mean, there is a way of operating, it seems, in certain cities and jurisdictions that they just can't seem to break. They can't seem to break. But yes, Susan Hudson, and I don't think I gave the. The CFO's name. Bianca Brown.
