Amy Robach
Hey there folks. It's Wednesday December 17th and the son of Rob Reiner has made his first appearance in court to face double murder charges. He spoke, but only a few words. And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ Robes. I said that he only said a few words. Words. But this was. I was surprised to hear you were the one that alerted me that his family has spoken as well. His siblings got to speak, Rose. I cannot imagine what they're feeling right now.
TJ Holmes
Yes. Jake and Romy actually released a statement. It's the first statement. The first thing we're actually hearing from. Yes, his siblings and the son and daughter of Rob Reiner. And Romy was the one who found them.
Amy Robach
What do the ages remind me?
TJ Holmes
He was 32, Jake is 34 and Romy is 28.
Amy Robach
Okay. Wow. She's the baby.
TJ Holmes
And he. So yes. So Nick was the middle child and he said a few words. His lawyer spoke to reporters outside the courthouse. So we actually heard a lot from people who are very close obviously to this case.
Amy Robach
But this was a big deal. We. It seems, look, this is all recent. It just happened. But it seems like this has been delayed and actually we need to explain to you folks there is further delay. So we just hopped on here now because this has been a breaking story. Did make a court appearance out in la, but ropes. He still has not officially been arraigned and that's been pushed back. We know that this even appearance was pushed back. It was supposed to be yesterday. So there are a lot of questions about exactly what's going on. And the. His lawyer is trying to maybe allude to some complexities in this case.
TJ Holmes
Yes, he hasn't gotten too specific citing complexities. But yes, we know that Nick Reiner's arraignment is now going to happen on January 7, so after the holidays. And while he was in court today, the only words he uttered were, yes, your honor, he had a blue vest on. So it appears to be maybe some sort of bulletproof vest or some sort of vest where he can't harm himself. I know they give these types of things to wear for prisoners who have, well, literally either a target on their back or they're potentially suicidal.
Amy Robach
And he wasn't in open court today. It was in a cage, if you will, is a. As they describe. I think everybody knows at this point what we're talking about, but kind of a. Almost a holding cell within the courthouse, within the courtroom.
TJ Holmes
Yes. And we know he was actually officially charged Tuesday. And two counts of murder with special circumstance, allegations of multiple murders, as well as Using a deadly weapon, a knife, in connection with the death of his parents. That's what the court documents say. But according to his attorney, Alan Jackson, who is almost a household name at this point, a prominent LA attorney who has clients like what, Kevin Spacey, Karen Reed most recently. But he was asked about this medical issue that we heard about that prevented Nick Reiner from appearing yesterday in court, which we were initially expecting.
Amy Robach
I said not medically cleared is what we've been told.
TJ Holmes
That's what we were told. So he said it was a procedural matter. He said there, there are very, very complex and serious issues associated with this case. Things need to be thoroughly but very carefully dealt with and examined and looked at and analyzed. And then he went on to say, we ask that during this process, you, meaning the media, who was asking you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward. Not with jumping to conclusions, but with restraint and with dignity and with the respect that this system and this process deserves and, and that the family deserves.
Amy Robach
We'll wait. And I'm curious, I really am. A lot has to be going on for the level of violence that we heard to be directed at the parents, at his parents. So something was not just not right. This is beyond just a little rift between two people. Ro, this is horror we're talking about being described in there against your parents. Forget the fame part of it for a second. Against any human being, your parents. Something is going on. I can't wait to hear. Not just a defense, but some kind. We are all desperate right now to understand this.
TJ Holmes
And that's a good word to use, desperate. And I think that's why so many people who saw Nick Reiner and saw him interact, not just at the party, bizarrely, but even with his parents, specifically with Rob Reiner, there apparently was a heated argument. And according to folks who were at the party, Rob Reiner was embarrassed, humiliated and quickly left the party. Cuz they were so embarrassed that there was a shouting match of some kind that happened between him and the party at the party.
Amy Robach
The party we're talking about, the Conan o' Brien party.
TJ Holmes
Yes. So a lot of the very famous people who were there actually, and you don't tend to get leaks in parties like this. You don't even hear about them. So for them to have now said, hey, we saw something and it was bizarre. He was acting strangely. But they said that his mother was telling people and friends that she's becoming increasingly worried about her son's mental health. So in the last few Weeks. But he was living in their guest house on their property. So you say, yes, violence directed towards your parents, but also the people who have taken you in and supported you and tried to help you get better. You might not have liked their tactics. You might not have liked how they did it, but they were doing it out of love. And he had to have known that.
Amy Robach
Of course. I can't wait to hear. And look, this is why you get the best lawyers on the planet in a case like this. And look, it's. This is just unimaginable. And there are some people out there, you think, wow, this is a monstrous person to have done this or done that. But there's always some story or some understanding. I'm not trying to soften the blow of what has taken place. But robes. This is incomprehensible to all human beings.
TJ Holmes
Yes. And to know we've learned that Rob and Michelle Reiner were found in their bed, that this happened in the early morning hours of Sunday. It's just. You start to see a picture that's painted. We also.
Amy Robach
Where is that from? That was from court today.
TJ Holmes
Yeah. And they also started. They've now begun to release some of the surveillance video the moments he was arrested. They released some of the surveillance video of him in that convenience store before he was arrested, totally calm, buying a beverage to drink, standing in line patiently. The cashier said he did not look like someone who was nervous or agitated or anxious or that anything was different from any other customer. He appeared normal.
Amy Robach
And there's no suggestion today in court that he didn't do this. Right. Nobody is saying, nope, he wasn't there. This is bs. My client had nothing. It's not that type of sentiment.
TJ Holmes
Absolutely not.
Amy Robach
Okay.
TJ Holmes
Absolutely not. So these are just some of. We're getting basically some insight into what the crime scene may have looked like and what Nick Reiner appeared right before he was arrested, how he appeared, what his mannerisms were like, what he just looked like you. All of that is just so eerie to think that you could be that calm, that you could check into a hotel, that you could just do all of those seemingly normal things after you just committed what would be probably one of the most atrocious, horrific things you could ever imagine.
Amy Robach
And there is. I talk about this being, or I mentioned, unimaginable for most of us. Incomprehensible.
TJ Holmes
Yeah.
Amy Robach
You try to put yourself in the position of those kids, the surviving kids who grew up with this person. And I no doubt loved. And to think that the person you love that Much has possibly done something to the other people you love just as much is I can't imagine. So when you said they, they spoke or broke their silence today, I was kind of surprised to hear it. But again, they know just the impact their parents had and there are a lot of people out there. Maybe they feel like they're fans that they wanted to speak to. So please. Yeah, and I asked you not to earlier. I didn't want to hear the full statement in that moment. So I'm hearing it for the first time now as well.
TJ Holmes
Yeah. They, they began by asking for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity. And they said words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michelle Reiner is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents, they were our best friends.
Amy Robach
Tell me that first line again. Got me. Say it again.
TJ Holmes
Words cannot even begin to describe about the speculate. They asked for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity.
Amy Robach
Damn, that's well written. And it's not going to be honored.
TJ Holmes
Of course it's not.
Sophie Cunningham
And.
TJ Holmes
It'S interesting because it was a five sentence long statement and never once did it mention their brother. Never once did it mention him, his name even reference anything about him. And that was I'm sure by design.
Amy Robach
That these folks are going through. I can't imagine. So we talk there about the siblings actually speaking. But so many robes obviously of the headlines have to do with the close relationships. I mean he has friendships. He's obviously a Hollywood legend. But all of his friends are Hollywood legends.
Pandora Jewelry Advertiser
Correct.
Amy Robach
We're talking royalty. Everybody he knows has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It's a good way to put Oscar. It's absurd. The people he surrounded himself with and what a freaking con. This coincidence that the Obamas were supposed to be see them on the very night they were killed.
TJ Holmes
Yes. They were supposed to Sunday have dinner with them. Their bodies were discovered around 3:40pm local time. The Obamas were set to have dinner with them probably 2, 3 hours after their bodies were found.
Amy Robach
So we mentioned that. I think one of the first people that a lot of people started looking at was of course Billy Crystal.
Sophie Cunningham
Yes.
Amy Robach
Dear, dear friends, When Harry Met Sally. Right, of course.
TJ Holmes
When Harry Met Sally. Princess Bride.
Amy Robach
And that's the one I forgot. I was like oh yes, of course.
TJ Holmes
Don't have fun storming the castle.
Amy Robach
Yeah. But I forget about these relationships like that continue throughout those two movies. Are absolute classics.
TJ Holmes
Yes.
Amy Robach
Probably on every list of top 100 movies ever made.
TJ Holmes
100, right.
Amy Robach
That kind of a thing. So these friendships go way, way back. So, folks, what we want to say is so many of those folks decided they wanted to get together and they had something to say as well about their friend Rob Reiner. So stay here. When we come back, we will let you hear the statement put out by Legends about their legendary friend. Stay here.

Continuing here now on Amy and tj. Nick Reiner in court today making his first appearance not arraigned. Right. He has been charged, but he did not enter a plea today. Delayed until January 7th as some complexities get worked out about we don't know exactly what, but his attorney said there's some things that need to be worked out before the arraignment.
TJ Holmes
I mean, I'm wondering, this is where my head goes. He knows he's being charged with murder and the murder he's being the with special circumstances. So the death penalty. He would be eligible for the death penalty. We've already heard from the DA that they are going to be talking to the family first before deciding whether or not to pursue life in prison without the possibility of parole or a death sentence. But I wonder if they want to take. This is where we're waiting for Nick to enter a plea. I wonder if they're going to be talking with the family, the DA's office to work something out so this doesn't go to trial. This doesn't become a spectacle where they can actually just make an agreement that he's going to serve his time and he's going to plead guilty and the death penalty will be taken off the table and the family doesn't have to go through this horrific trial.
Amy Robach
I thought you were about to say an insanity defense. I thought you were about to go that direction. What you're saying now, holy hell. I did not consider who wants what will now be a new trial of the century. To a certain degree, yes.
TJ Holmes
Oh, and people want to hear. I know it's, it's awful, but there is this fascination with the abomination and we want to know what happened, we want to know how it happened. We want to know what it looked like, what it felt like. So, yes, people would be absolutely riveted listening to the details coming out of the trial. But what the family would have to go through to have that be everywhere.
Amy Robach
Because they have to prepare. This is months and months of your life with cameras outside and it's your brother. Yeah, that right. You know what? I'm almost praying that they figure this out and don't have to do a trial. Damn, you make a good point.
TJ Holmes
I'm just thinking that that would make the most sense. Don't know. I mean, who knows? Nick Reiner might say, absolutely not. I want my day in court.
Amy Robach
Who knows what's going on with him in the condition he's in. We mentioned who. Who on this? Billy Cristobal. Who else was a part of this statement? There were a number of people who put out a statement jointly who were very, very close to Rhode Ryan.
TJ Holmes
Yes, the big names, Billy Crystal, Larry David, Martin Short. Those were the three that people kept referring to. But the statement was beautiful. It gave me chills from head to toe. And it's a long statement, so we won't read the whole thing. But to give you some of the best excerpts from it. They all hit and you will react to as we start to read what these incredible friends of Rob Reiner had to say about this beloved director. They said there is no other director who has his range from comedy to drama to mockumentary to documentary. He was always at the top of his game. He charmed audiences. They trusted him. They lined up to see his films. That's all true. They said his comedic touch was beyond compare. His love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant. For the actors, he loved them. For the writers, he made them better. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened. He brought you into the process. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a filmmaker was a privilege, but that is only part of his legacy. Rob was also a passionate, brave citizen who not only cared for this country he loved, he did everything he could to make it better. And with his loving wife, Michelle, he had the perfect partner. Strong and determined, Michelle and Rob Reiner devoted a great deal of their lives for the betterment of our fellow citizens. They were a special force together, dynamic, unselfish and inspiring. We were their friends, and we will miss them forever. There was a Line from one of Rob's favorite films, It's a Wonderful Life. Each man's life touches so many other lives. And when he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he? You have no idea.
Amy Robach
That was good. Yeah, I. Why did I see that last line? I saw the last one for some reason. That was really, really well done. I cannot imagine. So you go back, he was what, 70?
TJ Holmes
78.
Amy Robach
78. These relationships go back 50 plus years. Damn. To do what you do on that level for that long with the same friends. Those are friendships and bonds that are hard to understand. And what Billy, I can imagine what those guys are feeling. That's the line in there about range. I was. I started making a note here and I wrote out. So Spielberg, Scorsese, Coppola, Hitchcock, and there are others, but they had a line in there about range. Like, you think of Spielberg, you think of a particular kind of film.
TJ Holmes
Correct.
Amy Robach
What? Adventure, war, even.
TJ Holmes
I think he's fantasy. Yeah.
Amy Robach
Scorsese, you know what that is? You know what you're getting. But even Coppola, Hitchcock. This dude had. He did. When you think about it, he was amazing.
TJ Holmes
When he. When they said mockumentary, I was like, right, this is Spinal Tap. And he just re. Released the. This is Final Tap 2 this past fall. That was my. My parents love that movie. They talk about that movie all the time. Because I was a little young for it. But think about all the generations. It doesn't matter what your politics were. Truly, what kind of genre of movie you like, guarantee you loved, were affected by. Remember how a movie that Rob Reiner made made you feel.
Amy Robach
That is so cool. But a guy who can do Misery and Princess Bride is kind of special. Like, you didn't just try another lane. You nailed it. And you made it Oscar worthy and you made it a classic. And you. That is. I don't. Robes. I don't know if. And your genre of rom com is hard to nail.
TJ Holmes
When Harry Met Sally is probably the finest rom com ever made. And it again spawned so many others.
Amy Robach
But everybody's studying it and still can't get it right.
TJ Holmes
Correct. And he even made his own mother famous. I'll have what she's having.
Amy Robach
Oh yeah. And you know in the clip that gets played on tv, you can't play the other clip.
TJ Holmes
No.
Amy Robach
So the one we always see is that one with that line in it.
TJ Holmes
Yes. You can't have Meg Ryan faking an orgasm on most broadcast shows. Yes.
Amy Robach
GMA is not gonna allow that. But this is rope. This Is sad.
TJ Holmes
So many hearts are breaking this.
Amy Robach
But this is a. A guy. We have few that we lose robes that aren't just famous or talented, but actually have touched the lives almost of every single American in some way. Even if they don't recognize it. There's a movie somebody has seen. Didn't realize Rob Reiner was the director. Like, he touched everybody. So this is a loss for Hollywood, for the arts and for the country and for this family in particular and what they're about to go through, I can't imagine. But, Rose, that's a very good. And if you have it up in front of you again, can you say that line, that first line about speculation.
TJ Holmes
Oh, yes, I can pull that up again.
Amy Robach
You know, that hits on us a little differently to hear something like that. Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. No, no, that's on me.
TJ Holmes
I got said. Oh, yes. They asked for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity.
Amy Robach
And can we all just take that with you? And maybe that'll be the quote of the day tomorrow. Just tempered everything we should with humanity. So, folks, we just wanted to hop on and give you that update. Go ahead, Rose.
TJ Holmes
Oh, no, I'm saying yes. And compassion and humanity. That's the. We don't have enough of that in this world at all. We dehumanize everyone and everything and we isolate ourselves and. And have an us versus them mentality when stuff like this happens, as awful and as horrible as it is, there are so many important lessons that we can take with us and be better and do better because of what we see out there. But thank you all for listening to us. We certainly appreciate it. And we'll continue to update you on this story. Just constant developments here, but it looks like the arraignment won't happen until after the holidays. But we certainly wish. I mean, I. My heart. Our hearts go out to Jake and Romy. Can you imagine what this Christmas season is going to be like for them? It's. It's going to be gutting. And for so many other people who deal with grief this time of year, this is. This is tough. And sometimes these types of stories are triggering for a lot of folks, too. So I know a lot of pain out there, but if we can all just show each other that compassion, that humanity, it will make a huge difference. So thank you for listening to us. I'm Amy Robach alongside TJ Holmes. We'll talk to you soon.
