T.J. Holmes
Hey there folks. It is Wednesday, April 8 and a true crime story is playing out in front of our eyes. In real life however, they haven't confirmed yet whether or not a crime has been committed. And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ Robes. It's very everybody has heard the story before. Husband and wife go out on a boat at night in the Caribbean. Only the husband comes back says the wife fell off the boat there is where this is where we are with the story. Robes immediately. Where does everybody's head go?
Amy Robach
Obviously everyone thinks the husband always did it so yes, the suspicion has to fall squarely on the husband at this point. But here's the deal. Lynette Hooker is the woman who's missing. She's 55 years old, she's from Michigan and she is supposed to be a strong swimmer, an avid woman of the seas. She and her husband have been documenting their travels on the seas on social media. This isn't somebody who doesn't know what she's doing on a boat, doesn't know what she's doing in the water. And they haven't found her, they haven't found her body.
T.J. Holmes
There's no accidents happen, right? It's the sea, it's dangerous. But let's go back as we record this, Robes, we're sitting here on Wednesday, this happened back on Saturday. So to get everybody caught up, you might have been seeing these headlines and you're seeing them more because yes, there is an American woman, 55 year old Lynette Hooker of Michigan, who went out on this boat with her husband Brian. Brian on Saturday. He claims she fell off, they got separated, he came back hours later, reported her missing. And there a search and rescue is going on, which is. Now you said Robes officially has moved
Amy Robach
into a recovery mission.
T.J. Holmes
A recovery, yes. They don't think they're going to find her alive. So that is the story. Now, Robes, no matter how suspicious that might sound, or we all go back to other stories we heard like this before, we might even say, come on man, that's one thing. But it was elevated to a much higher profile and a much bigger headline when Lynette's daughter started speaking.
Amy Robach
That is correct. Carly Alworth, that is Lynette's daughter and she has been speaking to Fox News, to cbs, to abc, to NBC. She has talked to all the major news networks and she has said that her stepfather story, quote, just, just doesn't add up.
T.J. Holmes
That's key to say here as well. Stepfather. This is not her dad. I don't, I don't know if you saw, I'm sorry, Robes, to put you on the spot, if I, I don't know how long these two have been together, how long they've been married, but I think they've been documenting their travels and, and being on the water for a decade, for years and years. They've been together for a while.
Amy Robach
I don't know the exact date of their marriage or how long they've been married, but she's 55, he's 58 and, and yes, this is his stepdaughter, but she has been around them for long periods of time because she talks about some violent history between the two. I can go ahead and just read some of her quotes so that everyone is caught up as to why this story now is taking a potentially a very dark turn.
T.J. Holmes
So we now have. Is it fair to say. I think I stopped you before we even started recording. I said, wait a minute. Is she flat out accusing her stepdad of killing her stepmom? Your answer was like, yes. She's not exactly tiptoeing around that.
Amy Robach
Yes. I mean, she hasn't flat out said it, but let's just listen to her. These are some of the comments she has been making over the past several days. There's a history of him choking her out and threatening to throw her overboard. So the fact that this is actually happening makes me believe there is more to the story. So, okay, she didn't directly accuse him of doing it this time, but she certainly suggested she thinks that's highly likely.
T.J. Holmes
What?
Amy Robach
Yes. She goes on to say to another news outlet, there have been prior issues brought to my attention, which may be important for any thorough investigation. If this truly was an accident, I can understand and live with it. However, there needs to be an intensive review of the facts and circumstances of this tragic incident before that can be determined. She said that, and then when they were asking, reporters were asking her about how she would describe her mother's relationship with her stepfather. And she said, it's always been kind of rocky. Their relationship has been a lot of fighting and drinking lately. So I'm just actually questioning what went on in that dinghy. And her point is, because Brian's story is this, that it was Lynette who had the keys to the boat with her, that when she went overboard and fell overboard because the se were rough, there were high seas, she had the key with her, and when she fell overboard with the key, the motor stopped working on the dinghy, and so he had to paddle the boat back to shore. And her daughter pointed out something, and she said, brian is always driving. He is basically in charge of the key. So the fact that my mom had it doesn't make any sense.
T.J. Holmes
Okay, we agree with that. If we do agree, who knows what could have happened? Maybe she ended up with the key, maybe she ended up driving. Maybe he'd been drinking too much, and who knows? But she knows better than we do. And to, as a reminder to folks here, robes and you, we can describe this, and we've seen, I think, the dinghy in question, they were not on some big protective thing but it's not exactly something you, you're gonna fall out of. You just don't fall out of the boat and can't get back in it necessarily. Look, I think eight footer or bottom though.
Amy Robach
Yes, yes. I've been in a boat like this and I've actually been in high seas, caught out unexpectedly. It's a little rocky, but it's stable and it's steady and it's not as if it's something that you would easily fall out of. That's, I think a key point here. And she had even talked about her mom being a strong swimmer. And we both listened to the voicemail that Brian, her stepfather, called and left her. It was so calm. It was so calm. He's calling his stepdaughter and telling her that the details surrounding her mom being missing and presumed dead at this point. And he's so calm, he says honey to her. I think he says, hey honey. And said basically kind of already putting out a defense. I tried to throw your mom a flotation device but she couldn't get it. And he said the flotation device was found but your mom hasn't been so far. It just, it just seems so matter of fact.
T.J. Holmes
Again, I, I don't know. And look in cases like this, and again, right now we should have. If we haven't been clear, there is no one who has accused this man of a crime. As far as authorities go, they have been searching. He at this point is a man who has lost his wife and that's all he's been treated as with robes. I said to you, really, why? If someone, why you think you're going to get away with this? Obviously the first thing, everybody's going to think it was you or something happened. And you pointed out there is no evidence, there is no witness.
Amy Robach
What do you do exactly? It's not like he was on a cruise ship or on some sort of boat where there might have been surveillance cameras or other witnesses. If you're on an eight foot dinghy in the middle of the Caribbean Sea in the middle of the night, by the way, because he said they were, they Left Shore at 7:30pm and they were headed back to their yacht or to their larger boat. So this was a dinghy they had taken to get from one little site in the Caribbean back to their boat. And he claims, yes, that the, the seas were high and he lost sight of her as she floated away because just a heavy current took her and they weren't wearing life vests. So he tried to Throw the flotation device out to her. Look, and let me just ask you this. I mean, I know everybody's different, babe, but if I fell out in a rocky water in the middle of the night, would you just be like, I lost sight of her and then just start paddling to shore? When you're in the. You would jump out into the sea
T.J. Holmes
and I'm trying to give him.
Amy Robach
I thought you were saying you didn't know if you would come out and say, I don't. You would jump. I know you would.
T.J. Holmes
I damn. That is instinct. But maybe he's a. He's a more seasoned man of the sea than I am and he knows you should never do something like that. But instinct. I don't know how you get separated that easy. If you just fall out, how much of a split second does it take that you can't recover to just grab on or. Wow. Fell out. Oh, God. You good? You good?
Amy Robach
I mean, we jumped out of boats before and made it back just fine. Now here's the deal. We don't know how much they had been drinking. We don't know. Look there.
T.J. Holmes
I love the seas where I don't know. But all these things we're saying, babe, we're trying to find a way to make this make sense. And all the things we're coming up with are pretty last case scenario stuff where all these things have to go wrong for his story to be right. And that's possible, I guess, but it doesn't. You're. As I'm talking to you, you're shaking your head. None of this makes sense.
Amy Robach
I'm just going back to her daughter's statements. Their relationship has been a lot of fighting and drinking lately. How about the time where she said that he's threatened to throw her overboard before?
T.J. Holmes
Okay, relationships can be volatile. What I am saying to you. Ropes take the daughter statements out of
Amy Robach
still would be questionable.
T.J. Holmes
Suspicion is still there. But doesn't make sense.
Amy Robach
But. But to your point, how are they going to actually prove a crime was committed? The only way would be potentially if they found and there was some evidence of obviously her being choked out or her suffering some sort of violence before drowning. That would be the only way. But obviously she has been in the water in the Caribbean Sea for days now. So we're talking at least four days now. What wildlife. It's awful. And just the sea itself does to a body I would imagine would get rid of a lot of potential evidence.
T.J. Holmes
The other evidence option was the boat. Like what are the chances? Maybe Something's in the boat. Are they examining that boat? That could possibly be blood or any evidence of a struggle. I don't know. But how. But again, robes you. Damn. We are taking this through. No, but the daughter put it out there, so it's fair. But you're going through these scenarios of potential. She is suggesting that her stepdad is responsible for the death of her mother. How so you go through. How is something like this possibly pulled off and ropes. He had to have violently done something because if you. You can't just push her over, she's gonna fight to get back on the boat. I guess he could have done so and driven off and this left her. But she's a strong swimmer. How far out were they because she was made her way back? Would he have had to make sure she was dead is my question.
Amy Robach
Possibly. And that would be the only evidence if her body can be or will ever be recovered. And I don't know with ocean currents in that area what the likelihood of that is, but there have been search crews going on non stop looking for Lynette Hooker at this point and so far nothing and no one has been found.
T.J. Holmes
All right, well, we got his story, at least as the one he told to authorities. But he is also speaking and had something to say publicly. Publicly. Stay here, we will let you know what the husband has put out. He is telling his side of the social media. Excuse me? His side of the story on social media. Stay here, we'll let you hear.

Amy Robach
Welcome back everyone to this episode of Amy and tj where we are talking about a massive Bahamian mystery going on right now. A 55 year old woman from Michigan went overboard over the weekend on a an eight foot dinghy she was on with her husband. Her husband made it back to shore. She did not. Her husband says it was a tragic accident. She fell overboard. Strong currents took her away, swept her away, and he had to make his way back to shore and without the love of his life. Now, here's the deal. Her daughter is telling investigators, absolutely not. I do not believe this was an accident. He has a history of violence against my mother. He has a history of threatening to throw her overboard. This was a couple that had traveled this high seas, had been documenting their journeys on social media. They had a larger boat they were heading back to at night over the weekend. And so, yes, that search for Lynette Hooker has now turned into a recovery mission. And we are now hearing officially from her husband and 58 year old Brian Hooker, he is going online and he has said he put this announcement out today. Correct. So obviously he understands he's under suspicion. He's not being charged, and police say he is not a suspect in this as of this recording. But here is what Brian Hooker has had to say about what happened. I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas. Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart. We continue to search for her, and that is my sole focus. Our family is deeply grateful for the Bahamian people's assistance, especially that of Hopetown Volunteer Fire and Rescue Team, Royal Bahamas Police Force, Royal Bahamas Defense Force, and the US Coast Guard, who have worked tirelessly in an ongoing effort to bring Lynette back to us. Thank you to everyone for keeping Lynette in your thoughts and for your support of our family during this difficult time.
T.J. Holmes
I want to go back to the top. He thought he was explaining too much to me.
Amy Robach
Yes, he was.
T.J. Holmes
High winds. Give me that first line. Okay, the first line again.
Amy Robach
He said, I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds. I mean, that is very descriptive.
T.J. Holmes
We need to give this dude some grace. This is a man who quite possibly just lost his wife and is upset at losing the woman he was married to and is planned to spend the rest of his life with. I mean, you have to leave some space for that. They have to do their investigation. They have to do their thing. But you. You again, Robes, as soon as we heard the story two or three days ago, I was like, there's one cooking. You're not going to believe the details when you hear this. You're going to immediately say, oh, that's an episode of whatever show. Fill in the blank.
Amy Robach
True Crime.
T.J. Holmes
Fill in the blank. Whatever show. Yes. We'll see this episode later. Robes. These are the exact details. This is the exact layout of this type of story. But then when the daughter started speaking.
Amy Robach
Yeah, and suspicion, obviously is pointed squarely at Brian Hooker. However, look again, we pointed out before we went to break, there are no cameras. There's no surveillance monitoring equipment, there were no eyewitnesses, no other boats in the area. As far as we know, it was pitch black at night. The only two people who know what really happened are Brian and Lynette, and Lynette is no longer available, and Brian is telling a story. Who is going to refute it? How can they even how could they possibly bring charges? Especially if they never find Lynette's body? Now, all of this said, it is interesting. Look, I always say don't read the comments, but I had to know what people were saying. And, babe, not one person who left a comment on any news article thinks anything other than Brian is guilty as hell.
T.J. Holmes
Wait, I'm the only one that gave him grace is what you're saying?
Amy Robach
So I wanted to read a few of these for you because I just thought this was just a little. A little flavor of what most people's reactions have been to this story. Sounds a lot like a Lifetime movie. And Scott Peterson. Lol. Yeah. Okay, buddy. Have fun spending the rest of your life in jail.
T.J. Holmes
Okay, Expect that.
Amy Robach
How long before we get the update that her husband is charged with murder?
T.J. Holmes
Okay, that's. Knew that was coming.
Amy Robach
Natalie Wood 2.0. Okay, and guess what?
T.J. Holmes
That's low.
Amy Robach
If people think. Robert. Robert. I can't talk. Robert Wagner was behind that. Well, guess what? He never got charged. So it could be the perfect crime if one has been committed. I have a feeling we'll be seeing his interrogation on YouTube.
T.J. Holmes
That's expected.
Amy Robach
And then. And I'm Kim Kardashian. She's probably rich and he killed her. He's probably dating a 20 year old too. It just. It's all so, like. Wait, what was fanciful?
T.J. Holmes
What was that?
Amy Robach
Well, the point being, he's claiming he's innocent and she fell overboard. So she's like. And I'm Kim Kardashian.
Q Care Plus Prep Doxy Pep Baby Advertiser
She.
Amy Robach
She's probably rich and he killed her. He's probably dating a 20 year old too, meaning he probably killed his wife so he could get her money and date a younger person.
T.J. Holmes
Oh, because that's the way the stories often go.
Amy Robach
Correct. Wonder what the last thing she said to him was before he went boastal.
T.J. Holmes
What?
Amy Robach
Like going postal. But they said boastful.
T.J. Holmes
Oh, boat.
Amy Robach
Soul. Sorry. Boat. Still. That's what they said. I said that wrong.
T.J. Holmes
Should I read these?
Amy Robach
Sorry, I. Boat. Stole. That's a weird word.
T.J. Holmes
Okay, but you said silly wabbit earlier as well.
Amy Robach
Okay. I tried to say Robert Wagner. Say that three times fast. It's not easy.
T.J. Holmes
Say it once. You only needed to say it once. Robert Wagner. Once. Okay. Robert Wagner is not a big deal.
Amy Robach
I think it's hard to say Robert
T.J. Holmes
Wagner, especially when you're in the business we're in. You should be able to say Robert Wagner.
Amy Robach
That's hilarious. Okay. All right. Okay. And then this one just said, sounds like he took her on vacation to be killed. How sad. My condolences to her family.
T.J. Holmes
Wow.
Amy Robach
But, yes, it just. Some were snarky. Some were, like, heartfelt and serious, but not one of them thought that this was an accident.
T.J. Holmes
And you know what? The. The daughter you spoke of, robes. We've been sharing the words here. When you see her in the video during her interviews, your heart goes out to her. Yeah, she is. She is trying to balance grief with anger, and she's trying to find the right lane without being completely bitter and accusatory. But she needs some more answers than she's gotten right now. Your heart goes out to her when you see her. This is. Yeah, you don't. You don't. This isn't something you'd be snarky about or.
Amy Robach
No.
T.J. Holmes
Right. This is. No matter what you're saying about true crime and how oftentimes true crime is entertainment, this is a young woman who's pissed and in pain and trying to balance those emotions right now for all the public.
Amy Robach
She wants her mom back, and she wants to know what happened to her mom. And look, you know, when there was a point in my life when I would have thought 55 was, you know, over the hill. She's young. That is a young mom. 55. She had a lot more life to live, a lot more love to give. It's just incredibly sad. And was. Yeah, she was. I mean, she was living it up on a yacht in the Caribbean. So. What a. What a horrific end. And we say that just because the Bahamian officials have basically said they believe that there is no chance that she has survived after all of this time at sea. And we certainly hope that that, at least for the daughter's sake, she gets some answers, and certainly for justice's sake, that they find her and they can find out exactly what happened to Lynette Hooker. We will stay on top of the story for you, as always, but thank you for listening to us, everyone. I'm Amy Robach alongside T.J. holmes. We will talk to you soon.

This is Chelsea Handler from Dear Chelsea, after the Big Game. Like most people, I kept thinking about the commercials, and there was one that stayed with me. It was from the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate. And it wasn't loud or flashy. It showed a Jewish kid being targeted at school and another student who chose not to ignore it. As someone who was Jewish, that moment felt very real to me. Not dramatic, just familiar. And what struck me was how clearly it showed that hate doesn't always announce itself, but the impact is still huge. If you saw the blue square spot during the big game, it's worth thinking about. And if you want to show support, sharing the blue square is one small way to do that.
